Craig Gross - pastor at xxxchurch.com

BY MIA FREEDMAN

The first time I heard someone say “anal is the new oral”, I blanched. Cringed. Winced a bit.

The idea that anal sex had somehow become as common as oral sex, as much an assumed part of every woman’s sexual repetoire was a shock to my Gen X system.

Because until recently, anal sex used to be very much a sub-category of sex. A side dish. Not the main course. Not to everyone’s taste.

When I was in women’s magazines we would run a story on it every year but it was never mainstream.

A few years ago I noticed this seemed to be changing and at first, I didn’t understand why. Had women’s sexual tastes suddenly changed? But why?

I soon realised the difference was porn. In the past few years, porn has become very main stream and anal sex has become very mainstream in porn. Standard even.

But  – again I ask – why? Have you wondered that? Wondered where all the vaginas have gone? Wondered why porn is all about anal sex and why every woman in every porn video seems to be positively delighted by the situation?

I never understood until last night while I was watching TV. ABC1 no less. You really do learn so much during Q&A and last night was particularly enlightening.

Because FINALLY, I learned why bums have replaced vaginas in modern porn.

In a discussion about this by a brilliant panel including Benjamin Law and Germaine Greer, it was explained succintly.

Craig Gross is an American pastor (affectionately known as the Porn Pastor which sounds a lot like Prawn Pasta when you hear someone say it quickly) who founded the website XXXchurch.com in an effort to help both those who are addicted to porn and those who make a living in the porn industry.

He explained that in the porn industry, porn actresses are paid $1500 for anal sex and $750 for vaginal.

So. Which would you do if you were a porn actress trying to earn a living by doing as few scenes as possible?

Yep. Anal simply pays better. Men want to see it and women want to earn more money so they can feed their kids and pay their rent. It’s simple economics.

But they don’t explain this transaction when you see the porn, not even in the fine print. Because there isn’t any print. Now there isn’t even a DVD box with any writing. It’s all online.

So who explains this to all the people who are watching all the anal scenes in all the porn and thinking it’s the new ‘normal’? Thinking that’s what all women want and that’s how all women want it.

If you’re into it and it’s safe and consensual, go for your life. But the truth is that most women are not into it (or many of the other things you see in standard porn) and yet virtually every bit of man-made porn suggests that we ALL ARE.

So next time the subject of porn comes up – hell, bring it up! – spread the word. Female porn stars are simply paid more to have anal sex – or do double penetration – on camera.

They don’t do it because they love it. They don’t do it because that’s what most women want. They do it because they need the money.

And how messed up is that.

As another Q&A panellist, Christa Hughes, suggested last night: “We need to put the pussy back in porn!”

Yep. Bring back the vagina. Amen to that.

I had a very disturbing conversation with a mother from school who is a nurse. She has been very open with her daughters and in no uncertain terms told them about the young women & gay men who have throat cancer from giving blow jobs to young men. Whilst the focus has been about raising awareness of using condoms for intercourse, they don’t bother with a condom for oral sex & the HPV virus is transmitted, which can develop into cancer. She was fairly graphic – horrifying!

WHY for fucks sake does anal sex appeal to men if the other person has a vagina????? I wouldn’t do it for any man, not even Brad Pitt or George Clooney! It is just disgusting & revolting! Even some gay men won’t do it & they don’t have the other choice!

Love this article Mia, I actually woke up with a story idea about bringing back the bush after a nurse friend told me that from what she’s seen, and she sees more than her share of VeeJay’s, very few women under 30 have any hair down there SOOOOO I say, bring back the bush along with the vagina. Why is looking like a prepubescent child sexy? I’d say that is more disturbing than anything…

I am so over people saying that having a groomed vagina is like looking like a prepubescent child. Women who wax or shave or laser their hair down there aren’t thinking ‘I want to look like a 10 year old’. I wax it all off because I feel clean and it’s less messy down there, particularly at that time of the month! Each to their own, I respect people who don’t groom, but stop saying that we look like prepubescent children because we choose to groom…

The first signs of puberty for me were hairy legs and armpits, acne, BO and a big, long, black chin hair. Pubic hair came more than a year later. No one cares that I shave my legs and armpits, use skincare, wear deoderant and pluck my witchy looking chin. So why is my pubic hair different. If anything the former signs of puberty were more easily visible signs of maturity. Afterall, by the time someone see’s my hairless vulva, it should be pretty clear to them that I in no way resemble a child.

I agree- to the extent that people should choose whatever option they want without being judged for it. A lot of women who do remove their hair are angered by the “you look like a child” claim, but simultaneously in this culture if you don’t wax you get the impression you’re a hairy, repulsive freak. Women should be able to wax/shave if they want or do nothing if they want and they should be able to feel sexy and good about themselves regardless.

Perhaps teachers should show the ep in Sex Ed classes, if I had teenage kids I would get them to watch it too. It is such an important issue, we don’t want to raise a generation who are unable to have fulfilling relationships because their views of sex & relationships have been so warped by porn.

I have read that in the last few years, health professionals are treating more and more young girls for conditions like anal fissures, at rates never before seen. This doesnt surprise me. I have lived the college life and spent time with the ‘boys club’ and the pressure on girls to be ‘porn’ is phenomenal. Girls who do it will always be talked about in a distasteful way. If you want to try it, do it with a caring partner to spice things up once in a while. When you eventually meet the love of your life they will respect your choices, real men aren’t hung up on that behavior!

How instead of more vag, less anus, we should be discussing that porn itself is a massively harmful thing for relationships. Any psychologist in the area will tell you that men who regularly watch pornography find sex with their respective partners much less satisfying and in some cases can nearly render them impotent. And scarily enough – heavy users of hard core porn are 6x as likely to rape!
I learnt all this on my first year of my psychology degree – but if you don’t believe me have a read.

“And scarily enough – heavy users of hard core porn are 6x as likely to rape!”

This makes it sound as though porn is creating rapists, which simply isn’t backed up by evidence.

Current thinking actually leans towards porn leading to less sexual assualt, as it gives violent offenders a different outlet, which may be enough for some.

While I agree viewing porn may in many circumstances change the dynamics of individual relationships,I don’t think any psychologist would make blanket statements about how it effects ALL men or ALL relationships.
I also am unsure of your statistics about the link between rape and porn.i think there are just as many studies that would say porn has no impact on incidence of sexual violence.in fact, there have even been studies that suggest it decreases such violence.overall,I think the general consensus is that the evidence either way is inconclusive.
I don’t say this to advocate porn but I just wanted to offer a different opinion to some of the very sensational stats you offered.sorry….not meaning to be inflammatory, just offer a counter argument.

Here’s the problem with statistics like that.

Does the porn cause them to rape?
Or does their predilection for rape cause them to watch porn?

Porn could be an outlet for people that would otherwise rape.

I’m not saying this is my opinion – I’m just showing how one statistic can be used for both sides.

Did anyone read the article? Or look even look at any statistical information at all? There have been countless reports on the harmful effects of porn, especially over the last 2 years. I would really like someone if they do have an academic article of some sort that shows that porn does provide an “outlet” for those who sexually assault? I have not come across anything of the sort, only ever of the numerous psychologists warning how it can exacerbate those who are already to be more likely to rape. The 6x more likely is for men who watched “HARDCORE” porn, sorry I was not more clear about it and it was a US statistic, which I learnt when I studied over there (and was repeated in the article). And yes in the USA: 83 percent of rapists and 67 percent of child molesters consume hard-core pornography at high rates. I am not trying to say – you watch porn, you are going to be a rapist! That would just be ridiculous. However, “Among males who are predisposed to sexually aggressive behaviour, pornography users display degrees of sexual aggression that exceeds 4x sexually aggressive males who did not”: (Malamuth, Addison & Koss, 2000). Further, porn gives “unrealistic beliefs” to watchers and can cause partner dissatisfaction. How does that not look like a problem worth discussing?

    Amen.

I fell into the trap of thinking anal sex was the next natural step in my ‘sexual awakening’ because my fuck buddy mentioned it enough that it became kind of a normal thought. Before that, I always bypassed porn involving anal because it wasn’t my cup of tea. I haven’t seen him in a while – avoiding him – because it was agreed that that would be our next adventure, after a bit of coercing “everyone loves it”. While I’m not averse to trying anal one day, I have come to my senses and know it would have to be in a trusting, loving relationship with the understanding that it’s not always going to be there on a platter.

I get that people sometimes want casual sex without the entanglements of a relationship (believe me I do), but if it’s a regular thing, then it seems like the benefits of a relationship without any of the effort. That’s just my opinion.

Anal sex, oral sex…. None of them are “new”. It’s just that people talk about them more or in different contexts now. I think this article is a massive oversimplification of an extremely complex topic loaded with sexual politics. You can’t just lump people into a category or “all” or “most”. How do you know what “most” women like or don’t like without doing in depth sociological research? And there are plenty of women who enjoy participating in and watching this kind of material. There’s no fine print saying that the women get paid more for anal than vaginal sex.
But there’s no fine print saying the women ARE getting paid, and how much, either. (If we all had more of an inkling how much some of these more unconventional practices are worth, maybe there might be less pressure for people to do things they don’t actually WANT to do…)
There’s no fine print saying “even though this video looks like men abusing a woman, it’s actually not true, because she is getting paid a large amount of money to be subjected to this treatment (even though she might not actually choose to be involved in this if she wasn’t getting paid).”
There is no fine print saying “The men and women featured in this film are being paid to act and react a certain way (whether negatively or positively). Their emotions, actions and responses should in no way be considered “normal” behaviour”.

I challenge anyone who thinks mainstream porn is in any way a positive thing to go and check out some of the mainstream internet porn producers like PinkVisual. I did – and this is what I found… http://myblog.daftgiraffe.com/599/slutwalk-feminism-porn

It’s not really a lot of money to be degraded like that, to be exposed to sexual diseases, drugs & violence. It’s a career with a very short lifespan, you will only do so many movies before you become old news, boring, used up, the industry wants young, fresh faces, you will get old fast. What do you do with the rest of your life? It’s a career path that will follow you around for life, there is little chance of a respectable career after doing porn, it will forever follow you around, no matter how much you change your life there will always be the fear of being recognised, exposed. Considering what you give up, no it is not a lot of money at all.

Does wee not come through the same place a penis goes? I know it comes from a difference place but I have only one hole down there & its where everything- wee, babies, blood & penis- has gone in or out……

You actually have 3 holes down there. Your urethra, which is where urine comes out, your vagina, which is where blood, discharge, babies etc. come out and you anus.

I get it that wee does not come out your vagina- thank you to all of you for making out that I am stupid- but it is all coming from the same area that is commonly called the ” vagina”. I have never heard someone say ” make sure you clean your urethra” or ” wipe your urethra after doing a wee”. My point was that if you are having sex in the common way- vaginally-there is bound to be wee or even blood in that area. I know there are separate HOLES but it is not a separate area when used sexually. I hope everyone felt very superior pointing out how stupid they thought I was

There are two opening located in your vulva. Your vagina and your urethra. Urine does not come out of your vagina.

Reannon, you need to look this up. It is a separate opening. As several people have already tried to tell you.
But I get your point about wiping the whole general area.

Nope, there’s two openings: your urethra (higher up), and the other the opening of your vagina. So when you wipe, you wipe your vulva, and yes wee probably gets all around, but i agree, no big deal.

I was flabbergasted by this too!!!! Another thing that came up was the lack of hair “down there” that of course comes from the need for the cameraman to get a better shot…………..easier without any pubes in the way. As a mother of a son going through puberty I have to carefully talk to him about porn. Starting with penises aren’t always that big and finishing with porn is not the real world.

Thanks for this post Mia. Like you suggested it is sooooo messed up. I am terrified for my young son who will be exposed to these unrealistic ‘ways’. You could have also mentioned how violent mainstream porn is. It is really sad what is happening and I’m fearful for the effect this is having on young women and women.

My boyfriend is really into anal so I decided we should give it a go (why not?) and turns out I like it! Yaaay! We don’t do it most times we have sex (maybe 1 in every 20 times) but it can be fun and a nice way to spice up your sex life… Woo! So no complaints from me.

Porn is just like any other form of entertainment. We don’t want to see the everyday, because we live that, and we want an escape. Whilst anal sex may be a part of many people’s sex lives, it is rarely as common as vaginal sex. So it still has some novelty, along with threesomes, fisting etc. Porn that features two average looking people having utterly vanilla sex in the missionary position under the covers of their bed is always going to be about as popular as a film about someone doing their weekly grocery shop.

Btw, my grandmother once told me that she and all her friends had had anal sex and oral sex long before they had vaginal sex. This was before any form of birth control was widely available, so unmarried couples often did everything but vaginal intercourse in order to avoid a pregnancy. There’s quite a bit of literature on this, so any suggestion that oral and anal sex are in some way ‘new’ additions to the average woman’s sex life simply aren’t true. It’s simply spoken about openly today.

Apparently anal sex is still very big in predominantly Catholic countries – so women marry as virgins but have been having anal sex for years!

Why do men want to watch people having anal sex more than vaginal sex?

Personally, I’d never have anal sex. It looks like it’d hurt and besides, POO comes out of there! Perhaps I’m going to get shot down for being “precious” or “soft”, but to me, anal sex just seems a bit icky.

The only thing that will ever go up that orifice is a suppository and that’s only a last resort in terms of medication! Thankfully, Husband agrees with me and doesn’t understand the fascination. If we ever watch a dirty video then it’s normal vaginal sex all the way.

No, but there’s residual matter there. And to me, that’s icky.

I haven’t tried eating snails or durian but I’m fairly certain they aren’t for me. Anal sex is the same – fine for some, but extremely off-putting to me.

They’re obviously catering to the market, so I am not sure what this post is trying to say, other than “make porn more “conventional” for people who don’t buy/watch porn”!

I suppose there would be more ‘famous’ porn stars who get a cut of profits, go to sex shows etc and make more money that way.
But still. The internet is forever, it’s not much money when you think of it that way.

Still doesn’t explain the demand side of the equation. As in WHY do men want to see anal more than vaginal? It’s that demand that is pushing the price up for the porn actress in the first place.

From what I’ve heard, men like anal sex as it feels very “tight” and there is more friction. I guess more so than vaginal sex. And the temperature is a bit warmer? And a bit more taboo. I’m not quite sure, but I remember one guy I know saying all these things. I could say many things about that guy, in reference to anal sex, but I fear here is not an appropriate forum. Sigh.
