STOP THE PRESS!
Alan Jones (2GB Sydney, radio presenter) has made *yet another* highly intellectual and well researched contribution to the Australian Media. Yesterday, he informed his listeners:
“She (the Prime Minister) said that we know societies only reach their full potential if women are politically participating.
Women are destroying the joint – Christine Nixon in Melbourne, Clover Moore here. Honestly.”
Upon hearing Jones’s remarks, I realised I had two options I could:
(a) promptly quit my job and forget about my career, find a husband who can think for me and never aspire to participate in the political process;
or
(b) JOIN THE DESTRUCTION TRAIN!
Naturally, I chose (b) and started by smashing my radio against a wall.
Now, I will be the first to admit that I am not the greatest poster girl for feminism. I confess I make the odd joke about sandwiches, I’m terrible at reading maps and I’m useless at popping the lids of salsa jars.
But when I hear Alan Jones say that women are destroying our country, I get angry. ‘How angry?’ I hear you ask? Very angry. ‘I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR’ angry!
The reason why I get angry is because for all the policy mistakes, errors of judgement and blatant stuff ups by the many males who had lead this country before us, never, has it been so much as whispered that men don’t deserve to participate in the democratic system. There has never been a suggestion that men, as a whole, have destroyed the country.
Women, on the other hand have obviously singlehandedly ruined everything. They are the reason men can no longer have nice things. How dare Julia Gillard, Clover Moore, Christine Nixon, or any other female for that matter, (because remember- it is us as a collective, ladies!) leave the kitchen, let alone choose to actively participate in our democratic system.
I don’t normally get fired up over mindless dribble from Jones, who I might add, is one of the most ignorant, irrelevant and out of touch members of the Australian Media (I would call him a media personality but that would imply he has one).
Normally, I’d let it go through to the keeper. But what Jones has done is round out an incredibly backwards week, where a female Journalist was called a ‘cow’ and an apparent ‘feminist’ again took it upon herself to comment on the Prime Minister’s figure.
For me, this week will be remembered as the week I beat my head (and threw my radio) against the wall wondering why this issue never seems to just go away. Why certain members of the Australian media can’t grow up and move on past what sex a person is, I don’t know.
Until these issues are resolved, I make this promise to Jones and to all of his chauvinistic mates: I’ll continue to wear pants, vote, have a career and destroy the joint.
Simone hails from country SA and is the Australian Young Labor National Women’s Officer. A self-confessed bogan and political junkie, Simone needs feminism because she’s a hopeless cook..
What did you think of Jones’ comments?

Merri I just wanted to point out that I’m not connected with the ALP in any way and I honestly don’t know how I will vote next election. But I don’t believe any of those three women are useless. And for what it’s worth I don’t believe they are ruining the joint.

had a quick read of the comments, and its horrible all the personal attacks on commenters on here.
i think the point of this article is that in our society, people shouldn’t be defined by their sex in relation to their job.
that means the jones person living in 2012, would have been more dignified in saying ‘those PEOPLE’ NOT WOMEN.. until we all learn to speak language that is not sexist, sexism will remain.
i mean is basic common sense people. what if he was indigenous and said those WHITEYS instead. do you see the point?
as long as people maintain as an ‘US AND THEM ‘ mentality, isms will always exist. women and men have long been supposedly equal in the workforce and its time our language, pay packets and career prospects developed to reflect this

You know what, Julia, if someone asks for a thingo or a whatsit I don’t really make a big deal out of it. I know what they mean.
How much more PC crap are we going to be subjected to? I know what he meant, many women here know what he meant, and the women I was with today didn’t think it worth mentioning.
Ben Fordham did an interesting interview on Friday with a man standing for local government. Among his many policies is a stand against the introduction of the Sharia Law Tribunals that have been adopted in the UK. He wants all who make their home here to live under Australian laws.
Have a guess who rang in to support this man. The racist, redneck, xenophobic nut jobs? Nuh. A man with a heavy accent who came from Africa. The labor loving media like to make out that the only ones who listen to the ‘shock jocks’ are uneducated bogans. Another attempt from the ALP protection racket to stop people from finding out what theyre up to.

I don’t care whether people in charge are female or male or both or neither or if they change sex during their leadership. I just want people who are competent and listen to the people and do what’s best for the country. I think most Australians would be of a similar opinion. The annoying thing about Alan Jones making this stupid statement is that if the current leaders are criticised they have often tend to blame all the negativity on “sexism” rather than incompetence on their part. Don’t give our leaders easy excuses!
loading...
No, Giselle, The trolls are the ones making personal attacks in the posters who don’t have their heads up Alan Jones’ arse.
Read the moments here & tell me they’re all in the spirit of debate.
loading...
Cant edit.
On, not in. This was in response to Giselle’s post below.
loading...
Is a troll someone who doesn’t hate Alan Jones? Is a troll someone who is repulsed by the disgusting posts about him? Is a troll a decent and caring Australian? Then yep I must be a troll. Go figure!
loading...
Thank you for asking. I was just about to ask the same.
loading...
Oh good. It’s a political post and Merri is here….
loading...
Have you been waiting for me, B? Touched.
loading...
Every time someone says a disapproving thing about any of our lady leaders they are sexist woman haters who think all woman should be preggers n bare foot in the kitchen… Get over it… The man cop flack for their mistakes and so should the woman if he had said this about male politics an eye would not have been blinked

KTK – Um… wasn’t he made to after dishonestly trying to make out his comments weren’t paid?
And seriously, this is a free site – I’m a swinging voter but can still make up my own mind after reading these articles. We’re not all sheep. Go somewhere else if you don’t like it.

John Laws was. I heard the call that started it and it was obvious to any thinking person that the audience were being treated like idiots. It was disgraceful and I haven’t trusted the media since.
That said, Alan Jones is as good as you’ll get. While he keeps speaking for me, I’ll keep listening.
loading...
I have to stand up for Sol here. She is correct in her comments regarding John Laws and just because she listens to Alan Jones doesn’t make her an extremist and nor am I.
loading...
Well said KTK!
loading...
I love Alan he is hot ..
loading...
Why? Is it sick to object someone suggesting putting the PM and other prominent people in a chaff bag?
loading...
How awful if you ruled the world Framtonm. I would miss Alan Jones if he was not on the airwaves. As for you, I don’t think I would miss you at all.
loading...
Gee Sal… How lovely of you!
loading...
Aw shucks B, I’m blushing!
loading...
Unfortunately I think Simone has missed the context of Alan’s comments. He was blaming a group of women not EVERY woman in the workforce.
Also he does make a reasonable point, those woman have stuffed up! They are destroying the joint, the joint they work for!!!!
Simone men are also held to account for poor performance in politics all the time, have you not researched this?
Honestly I think you have taken this comment and used it to write a pretty ordinary article backed by a very weak argument. To say you will leave the workforce and let your husband think for you is childish and ridiculous (and yes I know you said it sarcastically…) Alan Jones made a comment that actually had some merit if you actually analyse what he said without bringing in emotion.
loading...
Great post sarahinadelaide
loading...
Then he should have made it about the individual and their policies instead of throwing out a blanket generalisation that sounded as if he were blaming all women (and yes, I’ve heard it in context). Although of course, I’m SURE he would exempt Julie Bishop…
loading...
Why wouldn’t he exempt Julie Bishop? She’s in opposition.
He was clearly targeting the three women he mentioned. He is exasperated, as am I.
loading...
Who said Alan Jones’s followers have no sense of humour ? (Hint: everybody)
loading...
Note: I deleted the comments myself because they have done their job; I wanted to prove that due to the article about Alan Jones, this site is attracting people who otherwise would never visit it.
loading...
No idea what you are talking about MikeyMike. As far as I can tell you haven’t proven a thing? Can’t make head or tail of what you are talking about.

My speciality is nutrician.
Mamamia’s speciality if feminism.
When I see a patient I try my very best to look at the ‘whole’ patient, their spiritual, physical, mental and environmental.
I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t.
I would be letting my patient down.
My personal and professional integrity wouldn’t permit me to do so.
So many articles here refuse to look at the whole picture.
If I picked and chose the information I wanted I’d make mistakes that would impact on others.
I refuse to do that.
It’s the whole picture or nothing.
I feel very let down by our journalists.
Alan Jones is one of the very few I trust.
If he makes a mistake or misquotes figures, as he did with the carbon percentage, he is man enough to admit it.
If only more people did the same.
loading...
Gorgeous Jane I applaud you.
loading...
This is a blog. A money-making one, but still a blog. Mia and her staff are not expected to ‘treat the whole person’. I buy The Australian, The Courier Mail and The Sydney Morning Herald. I know which way they swing and read a broad range to inform myself from different perspectives.
Perhaps, instead of whinging that MM should provide you with all your reading material, you should do the same?
loading...
Sorry, that post is terribly written and more worserly proof read. In my defense I was called to a toilet training emergency.
loading...
What’s nutrician??
loading...
Childless single women came from families. Many still have families.
It’s not a concept which is totally foreign to them and many of them don’t view everything through the prism of their marital and reproductive status.
loading...
Sorry my mistake! I didn’t realise that Alan Jones was born in a cabbage patch and wasn’t raised in a family. The things you learn ….
loading...
LOL
loading...
Huh, women are destroying the joint? Oh, because any male who has ever been – be they politicians, businessmen or commentators – have all done such wonderful jobs at making us the utopian society we were before women gained power and influence and destroyed it all.
Alan Jones is an irrelevant, misogynistic old fool. Check his Wikipedia entry, half of it is dedicated to controversies. Or for an even better understanding of this truly flawed individual, read Jonestown by Chris Masters.
In London’s West End in 1988 Jones was arrested in a public toilet and charged with two counts of Outraging Public Decency -the charges were later dropped – but 24 years later Jones is still outraging public decency for entirely different reasons.
I think Jones, Greer and Morris should all be punished for their misdeeds this week – maybe we could lock them all in a house with only each other for company for a month.
loading...
“Come out of the woodwork?” What a bizarre phrase. What do you think I am? A white ant?
Undignified, indeed! More like a matter of public record.
loading...
Flawed logic much, Alessandra?

Flawed post Betty Boop!
loading...
What irony that we should have such outrage about sexism by a group of people on this blog using the most vile and foul words to describe a man they disagree with. Sickening and pathetic. I wonder how many of them actually heard the interview with Barnaby Joyce and I wonder how many of them actually heard what Alan Jones said? But I suppose that’s all unimportant.
loading...
Hear, hear.
loading...
I have to say that am utterly amazed at the number of comments that support Alan Jones here! He is a self appointed political commentator. He doesn’t do it for love, people! He gets paid, you know, and his pay improves with his ratings. I have to hand it to him, he’s a genius of self promotion, and my goodness, but he has the knack of picking up the current nervous vibes in society. He doesn’t need help or backing up!
Luckily, he isn’t on air in Melbourne. And his type of broadcasting went broke when they started up a station here a few years ago.
Finally, he’s not joking or being flip- what a lame excuses they would be. He means it. Not just the 3 he named, he means all of us. Isn’t it time that was clear?
loading...
Rubbish Annacristina. I live in Melbourne and I listen to him. Best mind around. He supports so many charities and people. So many communities are indebted to him. MTR was a poor radio station. No comparison to 2 GB. And no he didn’t mean you and me . What you’re saying is silly. I heard him. He meant the women who he named. I agree with him. The women in power today (in Australia) are ruining our nation. Absolutely. And some of the men like Rudd trashed our nation. Big deal get over it or listen to him. He’s more than a few sentences of your outrage. If I were in strife I would want him in my corner not the outraged ladies on Mamamia
loading...
That Jones “supports so many charities and people” is irrelevant!!
One, two or three people in separate roles cannot ruin a democracy like Australia – it was an illogical, emotive assertion.
loading...
Craig, the cornerstone of communism is wealth redistribution and the crushing of freedom of speech. I give you the carbon tax and the Finklestein Inquiry.
If you think you have the whole picture then go and read the articles on Charlotte Dawson. We’re told half the story and then the comments painted an entirely different picture.
Democracy is a privilege, not a right. Stop taking it for granted.
loading...
CraigM says ….. ‘That Jones “supports so many charities and people” is irrelevant!!’ Wrong CraigM, it goes to who the man is. He’s being trashed here on this blog!
CraigM also says …..’One, two or three people in separate roles cannot ruin a democracy like Australia – it was an illogical, emotive assertion’.’ What are you talking about? Did you listen to what Alan Jones actually said?
Anyway as far as ruining our democracy, Julia Gillard is doing a fine job all on her own. Let’s hope she doesn’t get her way on preventing free speech!
loading...
Best statement on this forum today! Got it in a nutshell. In the aim of being informed about him, I have attempted to listen to his show several times. On every occasion, his attitude, rantings, bias, unfairness and ignorance have led me from minor irritation to white-hot anger. This man, in my opinion, is a thoroughly divisive individual who talks loudly to hear his own voice in his headset and really thinks he really should be in charge of the whole joint. I cannot listen to him and if I was to express my feelings about him fully, here, my comments would be instantly deleted.
loading...
And that’s democracy at work, Jimmy’s Girl. I did what you did and I love him. Yep I love his intellect. Love his ideas. Love his mind. Until Julia Gillard came along I was a Labor voter. I bought the whole shock jock thing. Awful Sydney shock jocks. And then I turned. I turned crazy angry at what Kevin Rudd did. (And I voted for him!!!!!) Poor fool me. Anyway, I found Alan Jones and at last I have someone who can speak for me. Someone who shares my outrage. Never mind Jimmy’s Girl, you can have Julia Gillard. It sounds likes she’s the girl for you.
loading...
He doesn’t like women. And he appeals and can persuade a majority that aren’t capable of critical thinking. And he has not been elected in a democratic process. Scary stuff.
loading...
Ah yes, people that have views opposed to the trendy inner urban lefties are just ‘incapable of critical thought’ and are being brainwashed by Alan Jones into thinking this government is a sham. Sure, thats it.
loading...
I’m not a trendy inner urban leftie.
loading...
Alison, absolute rot. He loves women. He loves gorgeous women. He loves intelligent women. He compliments women all the time. He interviews amazing women. He interviews talented women. He’s in awe of women who can bring something good to our country. And Alison, you should be careful about generalising about someone who you obviously know nothing about. And last time I scratched my lovely and clever head, I reckon it was filled with some of the best brains around.
loading...
Can you name any of these amazing and talented women?
loading...
I could, if I had a mind to invade their privacy to satisfy an anonymous cyber-person’s curiosity. I don’t.
I will back up what Pia has said. She’s spot on. Alan Jones is a wonderful Australian and a very giving man.
I can’t see any of the current Gen Y’s ever measuring up to him. You will pay a very heavy price.
loading...
I’m not anonymous, will you tell me?
If Alan Jones is publicly in awe of, loves, compliments and interviews all these women who are gorgeous, intelligent, amazing, and talented then their privacy has already been invaded or they consented thereby negating any invasion of privacy.
loading...
I wish I could name them for you right now Anonymous but it will take a little while to get all their names for you. You see I record his radio programs so I would need to go through all my recordings. Let’s see what I can do off the top of my head. He has interviewed the Australian women athletes who won gold and silver in London. He has interviewed the women candidates up against Cover Moore. He interviewed the aunt of a boy dying of a terrible illness. (He has since died.) He has interviewed the fantastic women who are fighting coal seam gas in their areas. Oh and by the way he used to be a big fan of Julia Gillard’s until she started stuffing up. And he’s still a fan of Kristina Keneally who he has interviewed on many occasions. (No accounting for tastes?) Will that do you for now?
loading...
Pia, that’s what he does for a living – interview people as part of his radio program. It appeals to his audience. That doesn’t mean he isn’t wrong when he does and says stupid things.
loading...
Alan Jones loves talking about wonderful women. He talks about them in glowing terms. That’s the point. Never heard him say a bad thing about a woman unless she’s stuffed up. He also let’s the men have it if they’ve stuffed up. You should hear what he says about some of the NSW Coalition ministers. You have to hear him in context.
loading...
Hi Pia, yes I have listened to him many times and read a great deal about him as available in the public domain, that’s how I formed the opinion in my original post. I thought pointing that out would be over stating the obvious, my apologies for not making that clear enough. Again, I refer you to my original post, particularly the ‘critical thinking’ comment.
loading...
I’m surprised at the nasty comments here. People saying they hate him and wish he’d drop off the face of the planet, that he’s irrelevant and sexist and should be jailed for vilification and inciting hatred? Seriously?
You know what I said this morning? Are you sitting down? After one stuff up too many by the ex I said – all men a f**kin idiots.
The other comments that support him say what I wanted to say. You shouldn’t judge him on the snippets you get from the media. They hate him because he is telling it like it is with the Government but there’s much more to him than that.
loading...
But dont you get it, you are allowed to say all of that and more about any man. It is just the other way around that is offensive. Haven’t you learned anything on this site.
loading...
Somebody making a glib remark to their spouse at breakfast (and regretting it later), is completely different to broadcasting discriminatory views on the radio every single day, to hoards of loyal followers.
It’s also worth noting that sexism or racism as with any -ism can only work when the minority group is the one being discriminated against. Which is basic human rights 101 but the ‘what about us poor men!?’ argument seems to be a popular one, so maybe this needs clarification.
loading...
um, there are considerably more women in Australia than men. And that makes more women to vote. That doesn’t make a minority where I come from.
loading...
That is not what minority means in this context. Here it means a group having little power or representation relative to other groups in society, which makes women a minority.
loading...
little power or representation. Right, other than the PM, Governer General, Attorney General, the richest person in the country. Other than the most senior positions in Government you mean? Some of you girls just love making your selves out to be victims huh.
Minority, lol, now I have heard it all.
loading...
The victim mentality meets entitlement = today’s precious feminists.
We are NOT a minority group!
Can we please stop behaving like highshool girls?!
loading...
The difference, ‘Precious Much?” is that you don’t have a national media profile or a syndicated radio show. Or if you do, you didn’t say “all men a (sic) fucking idiots” in that capacity. Try saying it with those conditions in place and then we’ll discuss the response.
loading...
They’re women aren’t they? And they are runing the place, aren’t they. So, put the 2 together. That is the way English works.
loading...
They’re don’t you mean
loading...
I assume you meant to say” “They’re” don’t you mean?” smartybum. If you are going to pull someone up, at least get grammer and punctuation correct yourself.
I have adjusted seeing that made it so difficult for you to understand what I was getting at.
loading...
Grammar, don’t you mean?
…Sorry, I couldn’t resist!
loading...
lol, I just put that in to keep you on your toes and to keep this thread going.
Ok, so spelling not my strong point, but hey, cant stand those that try to belittle opinion because of a spello. Know yours was in good humour though Miss.
loading...
Hehe, I agree. I hate responses that pick at grammar or spelling but make no comment on the content.
loading...
And what do you mean second Anonymous? Your sentence doesn’t lke sense? Are you having a go at first Anonymous? If so I think you have egg on your face.
loading...
In case that’s too difficult to understand, allow me to try – THESE women are ruining the place.
THESE women – meaning Gillard, Moore and Nixon.
Get over yourselves ladies. I’m a woman, I consider myself a feminist and even I know the truth when it smacks me in the eyes.
loading...
There are a lot of things to be outraged over, Simone. This isn’t one of them. I’d politely suggest that if you have the time to take a handful of worlds from the thousands of worlds he has spoken this week and woven fury out of them then go and volunteer somewhere. Any idea how many of our farmers have subsided this year? Any idea that China is about to buy out our cotton industry? Any idea of the impact the knee jerk live cattle debacle has caused in the Top End? Any idea of the money raised for a struggling family whose child is dying? Any idea of fight to stop the coal seam gas invasion?
If you actually listened to him and the many causes he fights throughout the week you might find something worthwhile to be outraged about.
loading...
Enough, you’ve hit the nail right on the head. Exactly right. Anyway is truth a good defence? I believe the women in power today are absolutely ruining the joint! And the ones who were in power a little while back absolutely trashed the joint. We’re still trying to recover in Melbourne from Christine Nixon’s feminizing of the police. And on Black Saturday where exactly was Christine Nixon? And what about Joan Kirner and Anna Bligh? Hopeless women the lot of them.
And as far as Alan Jones goes, Australia would be all the poorer without him. Whereas when Julia Gillard goes, Australia can begin the journey of recovery and healing.
loading...
Pardon? Isn’t this the man who hepled publicise and encourage people to go down to the Sydney beach to “claim it back”. For “Australians”?
This IS something to be outraged about! If you are a woman he’s talking ABOUT YOU! Don’t you get it? He has a voice and the power to use it, which means that EVERYTHING he says is up for judging and thinking about. He is privileged to have his position. Like anyone in the media, he should at least think a little before he speaks.
loading...
We should all think a little before we speak and write. So much rubbish written here about a man who has done more for Australia than anyone writing on this blog. And that includes you and me!
loading...
I truly do not give a fuck if Alan Jones said women are ruining the country! Zero care factor from me, as it is so low down on the scale of important issues.
I can only say that Alan Jones is one of the few in the media who has the power to attack the goverment on their crap policies that have Coal Seam Gas ruining our country. He is an absolute godsend for the people who feel like they are not being heard on this extremely important issue facing us.
And I love that he is bringing to light the fact our country is being bought by overseas interests for a song. Check out the news about Cubbie Station and you will see what I mean. Chinese buying up our farmland to produce cotton crops for clothing which they send back to us to buy for triple the price! As Australians we think we are innovative and clever, we are truly dumb and are ruining our future for short term gain.
Alan is the only powerful person in the media game enough to hold the government to account for the trashing of Australia.
I weep for my children’s future.
loading...
Happymum, what a breath of fresh air you are on this blog. I send you a cyber kiss. What a relief to read you thoughtful post. I couldn’t agree with you more. Mamamia becomes a little more irrelevant every time they post these kind of articles.
loading...
What she said! Loud applause from me!
loading...
I’m still laughing that Stef used the term “feminist outcry” in comments about a post from Simone McDonnell. That’s made my day!!
loading...
So glad you’re laughing Marie of the Mount. I’m laughing too at the childish and silly outrage about nothing. And crying at the nasty and vindictive spite directed towards a man who people disagree with. Mamamia at its worst.
loading...
Actually, I was just going to say the same thing.
loading...
I’m not sure we’re laughing at the same thing here. You see, Simone is my sister, and outraged feminist she is not!!
loading...
Marie of the M. It’s the outrage expressed by the people leaving comments here that’s an issue. It’s that a few words out of context resulted in an article that’s an issue. So glad that your sister is not what or who people think she is but at the end of the day that’s not the issue. Do you get the issue?
loading...
…..and, of course, Alan Jones is improving the joint.
loading...
Yep he is champagnesweetie. If you listened to him you might understand why.
loading...
champagnesweetie, Alan Jones is improving Australia more than you or I or any of the Mamamia team people.
You don’t know half of what he does for charity and sport and rural communities and down and out individuals and ordinary mums and dads and sick and needy people.
So much spite on this blog. But it’s not sexist, just nasty. So much better than sexism I suppose.
loading...
Thank you for pointing out my factual error. Didn’t realise he had helped out so many people – it’s not immediately apparent from his wiki profile.
I still don’t agree with his comments though.
loading...
Alan Jones is a bloody idiot but you gotta admit: Julia Gillard is ruining our country politically.
loading...
Mamamia calling out Jones as sexist. Pot, meet kettle.
loading...
LOL
loading...
Fab post Simone. You are one funny, funny lady… I best be getting on with destroying the joint now. Happy first day of Spring everybody!
loading...
I just made my husband a sandwich and caught up on a pile of ironing while he worked in the garden. No destruction of this joint here *phew*
loading...
Thanks for the laughs Allan!!! I love that you still think you are relevant!!
loading...
I agree Diamond. I can’t get angry about anything this buffoon says because I can’t take anything he says seriously. He is, as you say irrelevant. I didn’t even realise he was still alive.
loading...
I hear Alan Jones has the highest radio ratings in Australia. Amazing what irrelevance can do for you!
loading...
I bet ABC radio wished they were as irrelevant as him!
loading...
I think ABC radio is quite happy it doesn’t attract the type of people that are racist, sexist and closed-minded.
My racist grandparents live in the western suburbs of Sydney and they LOVE Alan.
Yuck.
loading...
Very disrespectful.
loading...
It’s an indisputable fact that Christine Nixon, Clover Moore and Julia Gillard have made us look like idiots. I expect a barrage of abuse for that statement and I don’t care. Jones generalised, so what.
Mamamia again tells half the story in an attempt to manipulate public opinion.
Alan Jones is a coalition puppet? Wrong. He has consistently held both sides to account. The Lib State Government has been under fire over coal seam gas and other issues.
I’d also like to point out that both Alan Jones and Andrew Bolt were very supportive of Gillard when she took over the ‘government that had lost its way.’ it was only when she continued lurching from one disaster to another and exposed her inbuilt appalling judgement that they became fed up – just as the majority of the electorate has.
In his defense, he is passionate about stopping coal seam gas and is fighting almost singlehandedly to prevent the poisoning of our water supply and the destruction of our agricultural land. He is always the first to put his hand in his pocket, he works tirelessly for charity and is a massive supporter of our arts and upcoming talent.
Typically, the shrill immaturity of this site grabs at something to be outraged over without giving the full picture.
To all who say how vile he is without ever having listened to him, I would urge you to do so before jumping on the bandwagon.
loading...
No one is vilifying the entire male gender for the stuff ups of male politicians and prominent businessmen. Men have been in power for the vast majority of human history, but no one is blaming all men everywhere for the state of the environment, the state of the economy, and the state of society. So no, it’s not “an indisputable fact that Christine Nixon, Clover Moore and Julia Gillard have made us look like idiots.”
loading...
Jones wasn’t vilifying the entire female gender, he was having a go at 3 women in particular, who in the opinion of the majority of the voting population (look at the polls to see), have had a hand in stuffing things up royally.
It’s not being a misogynist, it’s not being sexist, it’s a valid point of view that these particular women are complete incompetents.
loading...
Well said Anon.
loading...
He literally said “women are destroying the joint”. Pretty explicit vilification.
There are also a whole bunch of other women in political positions in Australia, horrifyingly enough. At the very least he’s criticising all of them in one ignorant sweeping statement.
loading...
What are you even talking about???
This is about his comments that women are bad for business. Nobody says ‘the men are destroying the joint’ when tony abbott or kevin rudd or any male does something disagreeable.
He’s judging a whole gender on the actions of a few, which is sexist and ridiculous. And so are you with comments like ‘they are making us look like idiots’..
That’s what this is about, not the political sides that people are on.
loading...
I disagree. The point of the article is to paint him as sexist and to inflame to usual feminist outcry and over dramatic wailing. Look at the whole person, get the full picture instead of being spoonfed the Mamamia agenda.
loading...
It is not hard to paint a comment as sexist as “Women are destroying the joint” as sexist. It is a horrifically sexist thing to say. You know who says sexist things? People who are sexist.

It wouldn’t matter how the comment is presented, if he’d simply said “these people are stuffing it up”, he would be presented as sexist simply because he named three women.
It comes down to the same thing, don’t anyone dare criticise a woman for fear of being labelled sexist. That is manifestly ridiculous.
I’m not sexist, I believe in equal opportunity and equal responsibility for everyone, the two go hand in hand, and if I don’t like Prime Minister Gillard it’s because I think she’s about 5 steps above the level of her own ability.
She’s walking, living and breathing proof of the Peter Principle.

He’s doesn’t have to be “paint[ed] as sexist.” He’s a complete and utter misogynist without anyone else’s help!
loading...
So because he fights against coal seam gas that makes him not sexist? His comment was – “Women are destroying the joint” – which is, to any thinking person, a sexist comment.
loading...
Actually your claims are disputable. Not facts.
loading...
Aggggh! Here we go again…this is NOT about politics! This is about a flippant remark made by Alan Jones that is a mass generalisation and quite frankly an insult to women. Who said he was a coalition puppet? And “in his defence”…I don’t care if he rescues stray puppies or delivers meals to the elderly or builds schools in Africa – doesn’t mean he has a place to make backward and derogatory generalisations of women. Not appropriate!

I KNOW! I hate this guy because he makes so many stupid comments without thinking. *rolls eyes* My parents listen to him in the morning and every time I hear his voice, I want to rip the radio ou of the car.

I have had my suspicions for some time, but this post by ‘Stef’ has confirmed it for me – I am now 99% sure that ‘Stef’ is actually ‘bradley’. And 100% confident that ‘Stef’ is male.
loading...
Or Stefan….
Alan Jones made a sexist comment.
Ooops. I fell off my chair from the shock. I’m okay now.
loading...
gretski, I can assure you that Stef is not Bradley and that she’s a she and not a he. I think you’re being a wee bit sexist.

It would be great if he could do all that and NOT be a destructive bigot at the same time though.
Great he opposes fracking – bad he opposes human-caused global warming:
Alan Jones: “Nature produces nearly all of the carbon dioxide in the air. Human beings produce point 001 percent of the carbon dioxide in the air…”
— 2GB Sydney, The Alan Jones Breakfast Show, 15th March, 2011
That’s one of Australia’s highest rating radio hosts with a very odd figure. The fact is that almost 30% of the carbon dioxide in the air is there because of human activity in the past two hundred years – and that’s thirty thousand times more than Alan Jones’s point 001% http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s3169309.htm
Great he’s generous and does charity work – on $4 million a year he can afford to, surely. And I wish actual charity workers could be on something even approaching that salary a year (and teachers, nurses, etc.)
OK, you could argue it’s not JUST Julia Gillard he wants to drown, here’s a list: http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s3551607.htm
So he’s an equal opportunity hater, you reckon?
“Shrill immaturity”? What’s shrill or immature about calling someone out on their very real flaws, Stef?
And last but not least, remember the video of his “bloopers”? – “shrill” and “immature” both come to mind watching how he treats his staff (“bullying”, “harrassment” and just plain “rude” also): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nm5bTGqRzI&feature=fvwrel

btw “The fact is that almost 30% of the carbon dioxide in the air is there because of human activity in the past two hundred years – and that’s thirty thousand times more than point 001%” comes from Media Watch abc. net. au/ mediawatch/transcripts/s3169309.htm

Go Stef! Love your line of thinking girl. I listened to Alan Joyce’s interview with Barnaby Joyce and I don’t whether to laugh out loud because this has been taken so out of context by the femmy outrage brigade or weep into my heaving bosom because I am so over women getting so sensitive about themselves.
If it’s not Tanya Pilbersek and Nicola Roxon making up stuff about Tony Abbott, it’s damsels in the suburbs getting all cranky about any one who misuses the X chromosome.
Toughen up sweethearts and consider the big picture. Our country is being sold off to the Chinese. Our boys are dying in an un-winnable war. Our children are being manipulated by an education system that’s caught up in UN propaganda. Our PM is tightening the screws on our democracy. And our homeless are less important than Australia’s temporary seat at the UN.
And as for calling Alan Jones names … not nice ladies. Not polite. Listen to him and you might learn something.
By the way, men have been destroying the joint for centuries so now that women are in power it looks like they’re doing the same. Equal opportunity anyone?
I’ll be shot down in flames for saying this but right now women are not well served by the females we have in power or the women who went before them. I lived under Joan Kirner and Christine Nixon and they did destroy the joint. And looks like the Bligh lady in Queensland did the same. Soon the people will have their say on Clover Moore and Julia Gillard. Bring it on I say! And go Alan Jones. Love your brains.

I did not expect to read common sense here but applaud you and Stef. You have echoed my precise thoughts. I converted from triple j last year and I’m in awe of his intelligence. No wonder the labor vandals are terrified of him. I’m a woman and Im not offended by his comment.
loading...
Go Cazza! Good for you! I’m so over the sexist B/S cries. It infantilizes women. They sound like school girls. Oh unfair they cry. The men have said meany things. They’re nasty and sexist. I’ll call them names back. What about ‘buffoon,’ that will learn them. Pathetic! Grow up women!

Single-handedly fighting coal-seam gas??!!!! What a load of faff – there are so, so many organisations opposing coal seam gas. What a load of bollocks!!! Shows that you don’t listen or read widely.
loading...
It’s funny for him to say that. Julia gillard does not make the policies and all the decisions they are the policies of her party. A party mainly made up of men……hmmm interesting
loading...
Alan Jones should be put on trial for inciting hatred and social instability. If he dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow he would not be missed. Replace him with someone who has half a brain.
loading...
Half a brain and perhaps even a vagina, since 2GB seem to be afraid of people with one of those! Not one full time female presenter.
loading...
Nice. I’m guessing you haven’t read Jamila’s post on being ‘excellent’ to each other? And for you future reference, he does more of this country in one day than you, I and everyone posting here will do in our combined lifetimes.
Blind prejudice is caused by brainwashing.

“Blind prejudice is caused by brainwashing.”
Isn’t this Alan Jones’s modus operandi?
loading...
It’s hard to know where to start with dear old Jonesy, isn’t it!?
Whether it’s inciting race riots, wishing he could murder the prime minister (chaff bag in the sea etc.), or just generally being a hate machine, he is to radio what dog poo is to the bottom of your shoe – stinky, annoying and something you need to wipe off as soon as possible while trying not to dry retch.
The problem is he clearly has an audience who agree with what he’s saying. We hope that those opinions will die along with the older, crankier listeners who hold them – by which I mean hoping the opinions will die, not the people – but sadly there’s a new crop being grown by the dimwits at 2Day FM, Channel 9 etc.
As long as Jones, Sandilands, Newman, Sheen et al continue to be highly paid misogynist, racist, homophobic bullies promoting or actually perpetrating violence against women, not much will change. The fact that all of these men have audiences is blatant proof that woman-hating is alive and well, and courted by the mainstream media.

Charming. Have you actually listened to him, Mandy or are you repeating what you’ve been told?

Alan Jones and the Cronulla riots: theage.com.au/news/national/alan-jones-im-the-person-thats-led-this-charge/2005/12/12/1134236003153.html
Alan Jones re Julia Gillard and Clover Moore in the chaff bag (which I suppose to be fair he said about a few blokes as well, hence equal opp hater) abc.net.au /mediawatch/transcripts/s3551607.htm
Alan Jones told me those things, Stef. Simple. Also don’t appreciate you implying I can’t think for myself. You’re either a woman who for whatever reason can’t see sexism when it’s right in front of you, or as other people here have suggested, a guy trolling. And either way you’re defending and apologising for one of the most bigoted media figures in this country.
loading...
I lived the Cronulla riot. In my experience, Alan Jones had nothing to do with it. It was a frightening time to be a young woman. The blame should be placed where it belongs.
loading...
Hell yes Mandy!!
loading...
Totally agree Mandy. Well said!
loading...
Yay Mandy, totally agree
loading...
Yep, a moron desparate for ratings by appealing to the lowest common denominator.
loading...
He’s hardly desperate for ratings!
loading...
Sadly, not.
loading...
Great post Simone! I don’t normally get too fired up about these issues but you struck a chord with me. Consider me informed and pi$$ed off.
loading...
Is that Alan Jones or Alf from home and away ?
loading...
… or Alf from the Alf show?
loading...
Great article! I think jones is trying to get any attention he can. It’s desperate. And your comment that best summarizes him and his ilk is irrelevant!
loading...
I wish I could agree he’s irrelevant but sadly he’s not – he’s relevant because he has an audience who think the way he does, and who vote!!
loading...
Urgh, Alan jones. The best thing about WA is that he is not on the radio here.
