Monty Dimond: 'I was once sacked by a top radio station for being pregnant.'

Radio host Katie ‘Monty’ Dimond has claimed she was once sacked for being pregnant.

The 3pm Pick Up host said she felt the “worst discrimination of [her] life”, after she says she was fired from a rival radio station when they found out she was pregnant with her first child.

Monty made the revelation as she and co-host Yumi Stynes discussed the recent experience of Weekend Sunrise presenter Talitha Cummins.

Cummins is taking Channel Seven to court for unfair dismissal after they fired her while she was on maternity leave.

This is the first time the mum-of-two has spoken about being sacked, up until this point remaining tight-lipped for fear of burning bridges in the radio industry.

The popular radio host and writer said she “couldn’t have been scorned more” and is still angry.

“Five years on and I am still really angry because this bullsh*t is still going on. Women are being punished for having children all the time,” Monty wrote in an emotional blog post for Show + Tell Online.

“I am still so angry about how it all went down, and I am angry at myself for not standing up for what was right. At the time I was scared, I felt if I spoke up my whole career would be over. I was wrong,” she added.

Monty says the incident happened five years ago when she was pregnant with her first son Baxter and had to take a couple of weeks off work sick.

When she returned to work, Monty told her bosses that she was pregnant, and that she was open to discussing the news on air.

That’s when she felt the tide change. Radio executives told Monty they didn’t want her to discuss her pregnancy on air, and that she should just support her male co-hosts, rather than provide her own stories.

Two weeks later, she lost her job.

In her blog post, Dimond praised Cummins for taking a stand.

“Talitha Cummins, you are doing the right thing. You are making an important stand for so many women. Me included,” she wrote.

“No one should be made to feel like they have done something wrong or let someone down because they are having a baby.”
