1. A Scottish cardinal says he believes priests should be able to get married. Cardinal Keith O’Brien told the BBC: “I’d be very happy if others had the opportunity of considering whether or not they could or should be married. It’s a free world and I realise many priests have found it very difficult to cope with celibacy as they lived out their priesthood, and felt the need of a companion, of a woman, to whom they could get married and raise a family.”
2. Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced an education reform plan for one million kids. The focus of the plan is literacy and PM Gillard wants to work with all state and territory governments to improve reading levels by 2014. “The evidence shows if you come out at year three not reading well, you are very likely to come out of year nine not reading very well either,” Gillard said.
3. In an interview with Channel 7’s Sunday Night, swimmer James Magnussen said he “won’t be mucking up” again. The interview comes after members of the Australian men’s 100 m relay team fronted the media on Friday and admitted to taking the drug Stilnox during a training camp before the London Olympics and knocking on the doors of their female teammates. In the interview, the 21-year-old said: “I have lost a lot of sleep over it, and I have lost sleep in the past waiting for it to come out. But I do think the buck stops here … I will be glad to put this one behind me.”
