India has declared war on Miranda Kerr's Instagram account. We can explain.

Miranda Kerr’s Instagram page has been inundated with hateful comments in response to controversial statements her fiancé, Evan Spiegel, is accused of making.

Last week an ex-Snapchat employee claimed the 26-year-old Snapchat CEO allegedly said “this app [Snapchat] is only for rich people” in an explanation for why he didn’t have plans to expand into developing nations like India.

The claims were made by Anthony Pompliano and form part of the ex-employee’s lawsuit against Snapchat.

The lawsuit tells a story of Pompliano’s brief, three-week tenure at the company, during which he claims he learned that the company exaggerated its user data and that top executives were “completely misinformed” about key metrics.

Pompliano claims that during a meeting to discuss Snapchat’s user growth in 2015, he expressed concern that the app was not taking off overseas. Pompliano, who had just been hired away from Facebook, contends that he presented methods to address the issue, but that Evan Spiegel abruptly cut him off.

“This app is only for rich people,” Spiegel said, according to Pompliano. “I don’t want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain.”

In a statement to CNN, Snapchat dismissed the claim as “ridiculous” and called Pompliano a “disgruntled former employee.”

“Obviously Snapchat is for everyone,” the company said in its statement. “It’s available worldwide to download for free.”

Since the allegations have been made public Spiegel has faced a backlash, with Indians dragging the app’s five-star rating down to one-star within hours.

And now they have turned the anger towards Spiegel’s fiancée Miranda Kerr.

The model’s latest Instagram post has received over 1600 comments, many of them attacking the 33-year-old for Spiegel’s alleged comments.

“Your husband doesn’t have a spine. You were better off with Orlando,” one person commented.

“Trust me except you 1.5 billion people know that your husband is a a**hole…. Bloody idiot…”

“You’re just another gold-digger! Instagram belongs to Facebook, but what are you doing here?” added another.

“Wow! Your boyfriend must be REALLY DUMB if he thinks one of the wealthiest nations in the world is “too poor”…  I wish him a speedy recovery.”

“Tell your f*ing scumbag of a man to think before speaking. So what if everyone living in India is not as rich as him. His dumb app is beneath us.”

Meanwhile, others stood up for Kerr and apologised for the hateful messages she’s been receiving.

“Stop hating on Miranda. She is beautiful and amazing. She didn’t say s**t about India. It was Evan. Don’t just define a girl by the man she is with,” one person commented.

“I don’t understand why people are targeting her. Her fiancé ‘allegedly’ made a comment, not her. Harassing her isn’t going to solve anything.”

“Grow up guys. Don’t make fool out of yourself. Do something for your life. Miranda, I apologize on the behalf of Indians who have been getting raged and intolerant. India isn’t like this. We are sorry,” added another.

Kerr is yet to respond to any of the comments.
