Michael Phelps and Nicola Johnson have celebrated their wedding for the third time.

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and his wife, beauty queen Nicole Johnson, really really like weddings.

We now know this because the couple have just celebrated their nuptials for the third time in less than a year. Yes, that’s right. THIRD.

Wedding #1 was a top secret affair in June 2016, at their ranch in Arizona.

Wedding #2 was held in Mexico in October 2016, in front of family and friends.

Wedding #3 was on New Year’s Eve 2016, and had a Great Gatsby theme.

Phew. That even trumps Heidi Klum and Seal’s annual wedding vow renewal. That’s a LOT of rose petals and alternate drop dinners.

But it’s not as flamboyant as it seems.

Phelps and Johnson kept their first wedding under wraps, as it was in the lead up to the Rio Olympics in August last year. At the time, their son Boomer Phelps was only a few months old, and the couple just wanted an intimate party with close family and friends.

When asked why they pushed forward their wedding, Phelps said it was mainly a practical decision so their son could officially travel with them overseas.

“Simple reason,” Michael told Sports Illustrated. “Boomer’s last name was Phelps and Nicole’s was Johnson, and that was going to make overseas travel more difficult. We were getting married anyway, so we just did it.”

But more was to come. Johnson told Access Hollywood soon after the news broke of his secret wedding that an official party was on the horizon.

“It’ll be small and intimate for the wedding,” she told Access Hollywood, “and then we’re throwing a massive bash for everyone in the States.”

The wedding in Cabo, Mexico, was officiated by Phelps good friend and agent Peter Carlisle.

The New Year’s wedding celebration back in America, on the other hand, looked like a wild party.

It had a celebrity guest list including Olympic swimmers Allison Schmitt and Elizabeth Beisel, and celebrity makeup artist Lisa G.
