Woohoo! The Matildas are going to Rio.

For the first time in 12 years the Matildas are heading to the Olympics Games.

The Australian women’s football team will head to Rio later this year after defeating North Korea 2-1  in Osaka, Japan.

The team ends its Asian Qualifying campaign with a perfect record and a touch of schadenfreude – it was North Korea who eliminated the Australians from the race to both London and Beijing.

Michelle Heyman scored a crucial early goal at the 18 minute mark, goalkeeper Lydia Williams made a remarkable goal-line block in the second half and  Katrina Gorry sealed the match with a final goal from 15 metres.
