Masterchef's Dani Venn makes Hungry Catepillar cake pops

Cake pops are the biggest thing in baking right now so I thought I’d jump on the band wagon and give them a go! Basically cake pops are cake crumbs mixed with a vanilla frosting, rolled onto balls and then decorated with coloured candy melts or chocolate.

I like them because they are relatively simple to make once you get the hang of it and they are perfect for a kid’s birthday party as they are bite sized and very cute. There are many different ways you can decorate them, from fairly basic like mine to very complex. I’ve noticed lots of books out lately all about cake pops decoration so there are a lot of ideas out there.

The best thing about this recipe is that it’s one that kids can help out with, they can help make the cake batter and then they can decorate their own cake pops. I wouldn’t be too precious about them making a giant mess with coloured icing, sprinkles and glitter. But then again, I’m not the one who will have to clean up after them!

Because of the popularity of cake pops at the moment you can find what you need to make them, like lollipop sticks, edible glitter and candy melts, at many places like art and craft, specialty baking or cake decorating shops as well as home wares.

For my next installment of ‘Homemade at Dani’s’ I’ve taken inspiration for my cake pop creation from one of my all-time favourite childhood books ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ written by Eric Carle. In some ways I can see myself in this little caterpillar as I often eat way too much for my own good and then feel all sorry for myself. I hope that you have fun making this with your kids. Enjoy.
