Mariah Carey decides to step back from social media after awkward New Year's Eve performance.

Mariah Carey has decided to take a break from social media following her controversial New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square, New York.

The 46-year-old singer took to Twitter to share the news, posting an audio clip which she captioned “in my own words.”

Carey began her statement by standing by her initial allegations that the event’s production team sabotaged her performance.

"I haven't really addressed the situation that happened on New Year's Eve and in time I will," Carey is heard saying in the clip. "But for now I want everyone to know that I came to New Year's Eve in New York in great spirits and I was looking forward to a celebratory moment with the world."

"It's a shame we were put into the hands of a production team with technical issues who chose to capitalise on circumstances beyond our control."

Carey then went on to subtly address rumours that she had intended to lip sync her performance.

"It is not practical for a singer to sing live and be able to hear herself properly in the middle of Time[s] Square with all the noise, the freezing cold, the smoke from the smoke machines, thousands of people celebrating - especially when the ear monitors were not working at all," Carey said. "Listen guys, they foiled me."

"Thus, it turned into an opportunity to humiliate me and all those who were excited to ring in the new year with me."

The mother of two then went on to discuss her plans for the future.

"I'm gonna take a break from media moments - from social media moments - although I am gonna fulfill my professional obligations," Carey said. "This is an important time for me to finally take a moment for myself and to be with my loved ones and prepare for my upcoming tour in March."

Just eight hours after posting the audio clip, Carey tweeted a video advertising the latest episode of her reality show Mariah's World. It is not known if the post was scheduled before she announced her social media break.
