MEDIA RELEASE: New editor for Mamamia

Jamila Rizvi and Mia Freedman

MEDIA RELEASE: MONDAY MARCH 25th

Australia’s largest independent women’s website has appointed Jamila Rizvi to the position of Editor.

Mamamia’s founder, Mia Freedman will move to the role of Publisher and Editorial Director of Mamamia and its sister site iVillage.com.au.

“I hired Jamila last year with a view to helping me take Mamamia to the next level. With her background in politics and women’s issues, she was uniquely suited to the diverse content and dynamic pace of Mamamia.com.au and the 24/7 nature of working online,” Mia said.

“Together we have overseen a dramatic growth in Mamamia’s readership, the launch of Mamamia’s radio show Mamamia Today on the Austereo network and a significant expansion of the website’s political and current affairs content. Jamila is one of the most capable people I’ve ever worked with.”

Jamila joined Mamamia in June 2012, following four years working in politics and public policy. Most recently she worked as Deputy Chief Minister and Press Secretary to Minister Kate Ellis and prior to that in former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s Media Unit.

Together Mamamia and its sister website iVillage now reach more than 1.2 million unique browsers each month and generate upwards of 14 million page impressions.

“Mamamia unashamedly covers what everyone is talking about today: whether that’s stories which will make women laugh out loud, cover their mouths in shock, help them get informed or start thinking about an issue in a different way,” Jamila said.

“We’re not a mummy website, we’re not a news website and we’re not an opinion website either. We defy categorisation – just like our readers.”

“I’m incredibly proud to be part of this brand and to be leading such an outstanding team of writers and contributors, as Mamamia continues to move from strength to strength.
