Lisa Wilkinson has given her Today Show fans the farewell she never got to say on air.

Lisa Wilkinson remained quiet during the media storm that proceeded her shock resignation from Channel Nine last week.

She made the announcement via Twitter on Monday night, alongside an image of a statement from Channel Nine confirming they were “unable to meet the expectations” of Wilkinson regarding her pay.

Cue, a week filled with discussion about the gender pay gap that is still alive and kicking; Nine’s treatment of women; and salary transparency within industries.

Wilkinson could only watch on as the storm brewed around her. She didn’t get to say goodbye on air. She wasn’t able to say thank you to her colleagues as Australia watched on. She had co-hosted the Today show for 10 years and, just like that, she was gone.

Now, she’s given her fans the goodbye she never got to say on air, sharing that her one big regret is that she didn’t have an opportunity to say farewell.

“It’s been a helluva week,” she wrote on Instagram alongside an image of her and co-host Karl Stefanovic from 10 years ago.

“I’m only sorry that I never got the chance to say goodbye to you all…the incredibly supportive, engaged, opinionated, clever and wonderfully diverse audience of Today.”

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the fun years we shared, and for welcoming me into your homes each morning. It has been an absolute privilege.”

She ended with an explanation of the image of her and Stefanovic, in a show of friendship, after they were seen to be pitted against each other by the tabloids in recent days.

“This pic is from Karl’s and my very first publicity shoot way back in May 2007,” Wilkinson said. “Look at us, we were babies!!”

Should Lisa and Karl have discussed pay as a team?
