Meet one of Instagram’s most popular new users

Like the rest of us Socality Barbie is just trying to live her most “authentic” life on Instagram. Unlike the rest of us though, she’s amassed half a million followers in just over 12 weeks. And, unlike many of us, her claim to Instagram fame isn’t that she takes her account seriously. Au contraire.

This Barbie has risen to fame by poking fun at the photos that populate Instagram; hipsters boasting about their “authentic” and “adventurous” lives spent gazing at mountains, drinking cold-drip coffee and kayaking while being #grateful and feeling #blessed. Photos and posts that, if we’re being honest, we’re all guilty of sharing.

For 13 weeks Socality Barbie has been posting images of Barbie living her most authentic life naturally complete with inspirational quotes.

Her photos are incredibly ‘real’ except for the fact that they are entirely fake.

She is the brainchild of an anonymous wedding photographer from Portland in the U.S who told Wired,  “People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions. I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?”

The name appears to be inspired from that of the Socality movement.

On their site, Socality is described as “A movement designed with purpose initiated by people and aimed at bringing the heartbeat of God to humanity” and emphasises that it is all about ‘connection’.

And of course, ‘authenticity’.

In fact, comparing the Instagram accounts of Socality and Socality Barbie side-by-side, you can notice a few similarities.

Although the creator admitted to Wired that the photos were beautiful, she also said what we’re all thinking: “It’s so dishonest. Nobody lives like this.”

We completely agree, Socality Barbie.

From now on we will only upload photos of us drinking wine in the bath and watching 6 straight hours of Netflix.

Authentically.
