Mother’s Day picks: Gift solutions for mums who love food.

Mother’s Day gift buying? The struggle is real.

Since my mum started taking blood pressure medication a few years ago, my default Mother’s Day gift of her favourite liqueur is no longer an option.

Since then it’s been a series of clothing vouchers and my best so far last year – tickets to a theatre show. I really outdid myself, but I really stuffed things up for this year, because how could I possibly top that?

My first idea of a framed photo of my children eventually didn’t seem like the best idea in the world, seeing as I normally gave her those anyway. Then I came up with the perfect idea. She is always cooking (and eating) so why not get her something appropriate for the ultimate foodie that she is? Then I can eat the results with her – and that, my friends, is what I call a win-win.

So here are four of the most amazing gifts for mums who love food.

Just as an FYI, you should know that this is an advertorial for KitchenAid.

1. Enrol in a cooking class.

My mum is an amazing cook – when it comes to Italian cooking. However, once she tried recreating the delicious mango pancakes we get from our local yum cha joint. It did not go well.

They were so horrible she didn’t even let us try them and the only reason I know she even tried is because she whispered it to me next time I dropped by for coffee. So there it is, mum’s dirty little secret.

So this year, I’m thinking of making all her dreams come true with an Asian cooking class. You can just Google to find a class near you, and you can book in for one day, two or go once a week, forever.

2. Buy some new kitchen stuff.

You know that old, slightly broken beige and grey food processor you’ve been using for the past 25 years, mum? It’s time to put it out of its misery. It’s earned its retirement. Just let it live out the rest of its days in peace without the burden of your cake mixes and biscuit crumbs and salmon dip. It’s time to join us here in 2015 with one of the most coveted kitchen appliance of them all – the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. And the best part? Any Stand Mixer purchased before Mother’s Day comes with a free Food Processor Attachment valued at $299. This attachment slots into the hub on the Stand Mixer and does everything a standard food processor does and more.

KitchenAid also has a stack of other products that are great for foodies, like blenders, kettles, slow cookers and espresso machines.

3. Book a winery tour.

Mum’s never been a big drinker, but she does like some wine with special meals. I recently realised though that she’s never been on a wine tour – so this would be a perfect gift.

One of the things I love about Australia is that no matter where you live, there’s a winery near you. I want to book mum into a winery tour so she and her sister can drink to their heart’s content as well as eat all of the amazing food winery tours have on offer.

4. Gourmet lunch, or dinner, or any meal really.

I’ll never forget the pain last year when we organised to take mum out for dessert on Mother’s Day evening after all our kids went to bed. We planned to treat her to the famous dessert tower at our favourite restaurant – the one with the most amazing crème brulee on earth.

We arrived, filled with excitement at the thought of the first warm mouthful, and of all the other desserts on the tower, when the waitress told us that they’d run out of crème brulee. I’m not exaggerating when I say I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach.

This year, I am pre-booking our dessert. Smart right? Lesson learned, the hard way.
