Confessions, obsessions and our ALL NEW PODCAST is live

I got back from holidays this week. Back to work. And all week, my answer to every question I’ve been asked has been PODCAST.

Hey, how was your Christmas Mia?  PODCAST

Is that a new kimono you’re wearing? PODCAST

Mum, what’s for dinner? PODCAST

This happens to me from time to time. I dive into an obsession. And this is a deep dive.

With podcasts, I wasn’t one of those crazy early adopters. I never am. I am not going to sit here all smug and tell you how I’ve been listening to them for, like, ever. It began for me as a bit of a slow burn over the past couple of years as I dipped my toe into a number of different podcasts. Conversations with Richard Fydler, Double X Gabfest, Savage Lovecast, the Media Report, This American Life, WTF….and then came the big one late last year: Serial.

I was hardly the Lone Ranger there. The 12 episodes of longform story telling where host and producer (and This American Life staffer) Sara Koenig re-examined the murder of an American teenager and the conviction of her ex boyfriend Adnan Syed who is currently serving a life sentence in prison. It was gripping and game-changing. You can catch up on that here.

Suddenly podcasts were everything and everyone wanted to be all over them, me included. Holidays are usually the time when I read books but this year I barely did. Instead, I listened to podcasts. We tried doing our own last year and learnt a lot of lessons from the few episodes we recorded in the Mamamia office.

Mostly, we learned that we can’t record in the Mamamia office (wooden floors, women wearing loud shoes) and that we needed to change the format and the line-up (also, our former host and beloved Mamamia senior editor Kate Leaver is moving to London!). So we have.

It helped that we’ve just hired Monique Bowley from Radio National and she comes to us with a fabulous radio pedigree and a knowledge of how to actually produce and host a radio show (we were stumbling around a bit before and our audio quality was soooo dodgy – apologies).

Here is Monique:

The other people who will be on the podcast each week are newlywed and newly pregnant Mamamia Women’s Network Editor in Chief, Jamila Rizvi:

We talked a lot about what we wanted our podcast to be. Should it be serious and about the issues of the week? Should it be a girly chat? Should it be personal? Political? Should we have debates? Should we confess our insecurities and embarrassing things we’ve done that week? Should we talk about things we were obsessed with and things we recommended?

The best way to stay across it is to subscribe in itunes here – that way as soon as we do a new episode it will be delivered free and immediately to your phone. And to like our Mamamia Out Loud podcast Facebook page where we will be posting links and images of stuff we talk about and where you can tell us what you think.

You can also email us any ideas, suggestions or feedback on podcast@mamamia.com.au

And if you could give us a rating on itunes that would be awesome because it helps people find out about it.

Also? PODCAST.
