Tears on The Project as Carrie Bickmore talks about her late husband's brain surgery.

Thank you, Carrie.

Earlier this year Carrie Bickmore used her Gold Logie acceptance speech to raise awareness about brain cancer, the disease which claimed the life of her late husband Greg Lange.

Last night on The Project she shared some intimate details about Lange’s illness and treatment.

“My late husband Greg had brain surgery awake. Five hours, lying there awake while he had someone operate on his brain,” she told the audience and panel.

“What they can do is phenomenal.”

The 34-year-old was prompted to talk about her experience after the program aired footage of an opera singer, Ambroz Bajec-Lapajne, singing during a similar operation.

Bickmore explained that it’s not unusual for surgeons to keep patients awake and engaged to avoid tampering with important brain tissue.

“They do it because obviously in some situations they want to get the tumour out, but they don’t want to take all the good part as well because then you won’t be able to walk, you won’t be able to talk,” she said.

It was a rare and touchingly humourous insight into what cancer treatment is really like.

“For five hours they talked about footy, he tried to set up one of nurses with one his mates,” she said.

“They have to find things to talk about to keep them talking and keep them awake.

“It would be terrifying. I mean he suffered from anxiety and I can’t imagine the feeling of lying there knowing someone is operating on your brain.”

Lange passed away in 2010. The couple have a child together, Ollie. She has since remarried and recently gave birth to Evie, her adorable daughter.
