Amanda Seyfried: "I was being paid 10 per cent of what my male co-star was getting."

She’s worth 90 per cent less than him, huh?

Despite big Hollywood studios’ refusal to read the writing on the wall, it’s increasingly clear that female stars are just as bankable as their male counterparts.

So deaf to this fact are these movie mogul boy’s clubs that some of Hollywood’s biggest and most-respected female stars still aren’t being paid anywhere near the amount their male co-stars are.

Patricia Arquette addressed the wage gap in her Oscars speech, and now actress Amanda Seyfried has spoken about her own experiences of wage inequality in the movie business.

Boy’s club: Amanda Seyfried’s unnamed male co-star earned nine times more than she did, despite the fact that their star-power was about even.

“A few years ago, on one of my big-budget films, I found I was being paid 10 per cent of what my male co-star was getting, and we were pretty even in status,” the actress told the Sunday Times.

Ten. Per cent. That is incredible.

Women in the US currently make 78 cents for every dollar a man makes.

In Australia, the gap is 18.2 per cent, according to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency.

Amanda Seyfried says it’s not about the money, it’s about how fair it is. And 10 per cent? That’s not fair.

“I think people think that just because I’m easy-going and game to do things I’ll just take as little as they offer… It’s not about how much you get, it’s about how fair it is,” Seyfried said.

She didn’t say what the film was, but let’s speculate, shall we?

Was it Red Riding Hood? Or perhaps Les Mis? Or A Million Ways to Die in the West? Although to be fair, no one should have been paid at all for that atrocity.

Many other instances of pay disparity between men and women in Hollywood have recently come to light.

Last year, one of the leaked Sony emails revealed that Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper were paid nine per cent of the profits from American Hustle, while Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams were allotted seven per cent.

And let’s not forget the majestic Charlize Theron, who had to negotiate to get the same pay as Chris Hemsworth to act in the prequel to their film The Huntsman.

She’s Charlize Theron, for God’s sake! Where’s Chris Hemsworth’s Oscar?

The more women – and not just overpaid Hollywood types, but all women – calling out pay disparity, the better.
