When it comes to describing Amal Clooney, there’s an abundance of titles that could be used: human rights lawyer, activist, accomplished author, barrister, even university lecturer.

As someone who has represented defendants in many of the world’s biggest human rights cases (ahem, Julian Assange or Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Fahmy) Amal could easily be considered one of the world’s most accomplished women in the legal sphere and yet The Associated Press decided to ignore all of these titles when they described Clooney in a recent tweet.

What did they decide to go with instead? Actor’s wife – yep that’s right.

Yes, Amal is married to Hollywood actor George Clooney and – but on a day where Amal was busy representing her client, Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Fahmy, diminishing all of her achievements down to ‘actor’s wife’ is a sexist slur against Clooney and the tireless work she is doing to keep Fahmy out of prison.

AP realised their mistake and sent out a more accurate tweet a few hours later:

Amal Clooney who has bigger fish to fry than worrying about AP’s condescending and sexist remark, warned of the “dangerous” implications this Al Jazeera verdict would cause.

“The verdict today sends a very dangerous message in Egypt,” said Clooney after the ruling. “It sends a message that journalists can be locked up for simply doing their job, for telling the truth and reporting the news.”
