Greens Senator Larissa Waters has announced the birth of her baby girl.

Queensland senator and co-deputy leader of the Australian Greens party Larissa Waters has given birth to a baby girl, her second daughter, Alia Joy.

“What a fitting day to announce the arrival of my second daughter, Alia Joy,” the 40-year-old senator posted to Facebook on Wednesday, which was also International Women’s Day.

“She has a head of hair like an 80s pop star and likes to eat constantly – so she is definitely her mother’s daughter,” Waters’ post continues.

The Brisbane-based politician has spent her career pushing for action on global warming, protecting the Great Barrier Reef, and investing in clean energy.

She is a huge campaigner for gender equality and, in 2015, she established a Senate Inquiry to reinstate government funding for domestic violence services. “For all the talk, families need to see some action. Lives are depending on it,” she told the senate.

Now, Waters says, the birth of her daughter is fresh motivation to work hard for a brighter, more equal, future.

"I'll be having a few more weeks off but will soon be back in parliament with this little one in tow," Waters' post reads.

"She is even more inspiration for continuing our work to address gender inequality and stem dangerous climate change. (And yes, if she's hungry, she will be breastfed in the Senate chamber)."

The kids book every parent should read. Post continues below.

"To all the awesome mums out there juggling everything - you are the real superheroes," the post concludes. "Happy International Women's Day to everyone working for a more equal future!"

Waters has been inundated with congratulations from social media followers, and her post has been shared more than 3000 times.

"Congratulations and thank you for the example you will set by bringing your baby with you to work and breastfeeding her in public," one commenter has written. "Caring for our babies is the way to change the world."

We couldn't agree more. Congratulations, Larissa.
