1. Australian woman who killed friend in Jakarta with poisoned coffee given 20 years jail.

Jessica Kumala Wongso, an Australian, has been convicted of the murder of her friend Mirna Salihin and sentenced to 20 years in jail in a Jakarta prison.

The 28-year-old was found guilty of lacing her friend Mirna Salihin’s Vietnamese iced coffee with cyanide in a Jakarta cafe on January 6 this year.

News Limited reports that the Australian government sought a guarantee from Indonesian authorities that she would not be sentenced to death in exchange for providing evidence from Australia about the two women’s time in Sydney and about Wongso’s criminal record in Australia.

They met when they were students at the Billy Blue College of Design in Sydney in 2007.

The prosecution said the motive for the murder was revenge after Ms Salihin had criticised Wongso’s Australian ex-boyfriend.

Judge Binsar Gultom said Wongso’s emotional baggage saw her leave Australia and that she was still hurting over her break-up with Australian man Patrick O’Connor in late 2014. He added when she first met up with Mirna and her husband Arif Soemarko last December and saw them “so happy” something was “triggered”.

The judges found that she had shown no remorse and was not sorry for killing her 27-year-old friend.

Wongso said after the verdict that she did not accept it.

“I don’t accept this decision because for me, it’s not fair and very one-sided.”

2. Dreamworld employee’s sick social media jokes.

A Dreamworld employee has been slammed after making heartless jokes about the tragic accident that left four people dead this week.

Benn Rattray, who is employed by Dreamworld, posted a link to a story on Tuesday afternoon with the caption: “Oops, I knew I forgot something”.

As a Dreamworld contractor he claimed he was responsible for building the rides and joked about forgetting to tighten the conveyor belt on the Thunder River Rapids ride.

“Just heading back to Dreamworld to tighten up the conveyor belt. Was supposed to do it after smoko but forgot …” he posted.

The Courier Mail reports Mr Rattray yesterday posted: “On a positive note … At least they died having fun …” A friend responded: “I knew these people … Their kids aren’t laughing.”

A spokeswoman for Ardent Leisure said they were “horrified and sickened by these Facebook posts.”

Meanwhile, Dreamworld remains closed as it is still a crime scene after the company reversed the decision to open today for Memorial Day but that was ruled out by police who say the site remains a crime scene.

3. “Worst of the Worst” parents to be sentenced after being convicted of imprisoning and raping daughter for 14 years.

A father who raped, molested, mutilated and abused his daughter for 14 years, keeping her locked in a shed or a small box outside, will be sentenced today.

The NSW man who first raped the woman, now aged 21, at the age of five while her mother was in hospital giving birth to her sister has been behind bars since his conviction.

Her mother taught her daughter how to have sex with the father from the time she was eight. She made the daughter believe “the father’s deviant conduct was normal that it would be beneficial for the victim to participate in it”, Judge Sarah Huggett said.

“She genuinely believed her father would kill her if she ever told anyone on what was happening.”

The father, 59, was convicted earlier this year by a jury of 73 child sex offences.

The mother was convicted of 13 counts.

Two of these counts involved another daughter.

4. Paid Parental Leave changes closer to passing parliament.

The changes to the paid parental leave scheme may be one step closer with Independents Derryn Hinch and Nick Xenophon indicating they may have a deal with the government.

Senator Xenophon said yesterday he is open to supporting the plan that aims to stop parents claiming both employer and government paid leave, provided the start date is delayed until October 2017.

“The January 1st start date has caused much angst and distress amongst expectant mums,” Senator Xenophon said.

Fellow crossbencher Derryn Hinch, who also supports a delay to the start date but wants it set at July, says he’ll sit down with Senator Xenophon to negotiate.

“We can probably get (the legislation) across the line.”

Ms Francis was on the stand for the third day straight at the trial of her former partner John Torney.

Torney confessed to hiding Nikki’s body in the ceiling of her Oram Court home last year but claims the toddler was killed by Ms Francis.

Ms Francis admitted lying at least four times during her 000 call about when she last saw Nikki and who had put her to bed.

Ms Francis today told the jury false details in the call — including a claim that she put Nikki to bed at 11am — were not deliberate lies, and were caused by her state of panic.

“I wasn’t coherent. I was just worried about where my daughter was. I wasn’t paying too much attention to what the lady was saying, to her questions, and I didn’t know half the answers,” Ms Francis said.

6. Calls for Victorian Minister to be sacked after he admitted using taxpayer funded car to chauffeur pet dogs.

There were calls last night for Victorian Corrections Minister Steve Herbert to be sacked after it was revealed yesterday he used his taxpayer-funded car as a taxi for his pet dogs.

The corrections minister’s dogs Patch and Ted were ferried more than 120 kilometres between his homes in Melbourne and country Victoria.

“That was a mistake which I’ve acknowledged and which won’t happen again, and I’ve apologised for it,” Mr Herbert said in question time yesterday.

“I couldn’t leave them and I had few options.”

But Opposition leader Matthew Guy argued Mr Herbert’s apology wasn’t good enough.

“This minister should go,” he said.

Today, the news came that Steve Herbert also broke parliamentary rules by failing to declare he owns the house his dogs were chauffeured to, reports The Herald Sun.
