Lucy and Nat in their exercise gear after work.

by NATALIA HAWK

Friends: I have become an evening exerciser.

I am now one of those people who straps on their joggers after a long, hard day at work, then jogs merrily out the office door and all the way home.

I know. I hate those people too. I used to sit on the bus, staring out the window at all the healthy exercise-y people, snorting with derision as my bus sped past 800 times faster than them. Idjits.

But I quit the gym several weeks ago (my boss had to sign a letter to get me out of the contract but that’s a whole other post) and had to find another time to exercise. Since mornings and I go together like beer and toothpaste (i.e. not at all) the evening was the only option.

So I got inspired by those bus-route-running-home people. After all, it’s summer and daylight savings and still so nice at 7pm and running SAVES THE ENVIRONMENT because running uses no petrol. Someone get me a medal already.

Here’s how my first evening of running home went down. Broken down by kilometre.

9km from home: Leave office. Am tired already, but whatever. Tell colleagues I am running home. Colleagues say: “Won’t it take you several years?” Me: “Google maps says it will only take 2 hours to walk. And Google maps walking pace is measured by turtles, so I am estimating I will be home in 20 minutes.”

100295018 380x255 When is the best time to exercise?8km from home: Running through the city, feeling fit and fantastic. This is because I have to stop at a different intersection every 15 metres to wait for the green walking man signal. This is excellent for resting. I’m like an old lady who looks forward to red lights when driving so she has time to collect her thoughts. But still, LOOK AT ME RUNNING HOME.

7km from home: Intersections become less frequent. Body remembers that it hates running. Really, really hates running. Everything starts to hurt. Running home suddenly becomes a very, very, very terrible idea.

6km from home: Boyfriend calls and asks what I’m doing. “Running home,” I pant. “WHY?” he says. “BECAUSE I AM EVIDENTLY INSANE AND QUITE POSSIBLY ON THE VERGE OF DEATH,” I snap. He pauses. “I’ll ring you back in January 2014,” he says. “You’ll probably still be going.”

5km from home: Get overtaken by a pensioner. Start to cry.

4km from home: Cue drool dripping from my mouth at the sight of buses, beautiful sleek buses with their wheels and their engines and comfortable seats. I am like a thirsty camel in the desert.

3km from home: Boyfriend calls back. “I forgot to tell you that I used to run 10km after work every day. So you’ll be fine.” Try to remember why I even like him. Come up with nothing.

2km from home: Fitness Fanatic Freak Friend texts me. I tell him I am running home (he lives right near me so he will understand my pain, plus stopping to text means I can take another ‘rest’). “From the city?” says Fitness Fanatic Freak Friend. “I did that once. It took me 27 minutes. How are you going?” Decide not to reply.

natworkout 380x283 When is the best time to exercise?

Nat on a better work out day.

1km from home: Dying. Dying. Death. Dying. Goodbye cruel world.

Home: One hour and fifteen minutes after leaving work, I am passed out on the floor of the living room. Family members carefully step around my limbs as I sweat on the rug and try to explain that I ran all the way home. Despite the overwhelming exhaustion, there is also much pride. “I will do this every evening!!!” I say to myself. And then I go to bed at 9pm.

And that is how I became an evening exerciser. A runner-of-the-bus-route. ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE. And I tell you this, you don’t hate them when you ARE them.

So I have proved a point to myself and the world and that is – the best time to exercise is not morning, nor immediately before breakfast, nor during your lunch break or late at night. The best time to exercise is WHENEVER YOU’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO DO IT.

This from Fairfax:

Research has shown that exercising first thing in the morning may aid weight loss and that the body is best primed for physical activity in the late afternoon. But, as the excellent fitness coach Alwyn Cosgrove likes to say, “psychology trumps physiology”, and I will change that to, “practicality trumps physiology”.

The most important thing is picking a time of day when you can actually get your workouts done because if you can’t get them done, any talk about optimising them becomes irrelevant because they’re not getting done.

Just pick a time you know you can work out and if that isn’t practical , then try another time. If the second attempted time doesn’t work, try something else.

That’s easy enough for me.

When do you exercise? How do you motivate yourself?

I used to be an evening exerciser…. then I did Michelle Bridges 12 week body transformation… and completely changed my tune. now I get a tiny thrill getting up at 5.20am ( I KNOW!!??)… and driving off to the gym, or heading out for a run. I cherish that time of the day when the house is quiet and it is just about *me*. There are no excuses at that time. And it sets me up for the day.

I was really struggling to fit in exercise around kids and work. Bought a cargo bike: problem solved. Now I exercise whenever I go to the shops, market, drop the kids at childcare, take them for a swimming lesson, buy bread… every daily errand is an opportunity to exercise! If I waited until I had time to get to the gym…

The only morning exercise I do is 20 minutes of pilates if I can be bothered. Every morning I set my alarm for 6 am and 4 out of 5, I snooze til 6.30. I just can’t be bothered.

I’m definitely an after work exerciser. My old gym was on the way home so I’d stop by there most nights and do a couple of work outs. My new gym doesn’t seem as friendly and although I joined a week ago I’m yet to set foot in there.

I used to exercise regularly but I recently started learning a musical instrument which requires about 1.5 hours of practice a day, so I do that instead of running. I just had to make a choice and I really don’t have one minute more in the day to spare. So I’ve become an early morning pianist instead! Still try to do one yoga session every few weeks though.

This article has come at a good time for me too Nat! I lack motivation to exercise and always talk myself out of it come after work. I work offshore on an island for two weeks at a time. This past week I have been getting the bus to drop me off 5kms before camp and I walk home. In 35 degree heat. I feel great when I get home, am very hot, but have my exercise over and done with before I get back to camp, therefore I don’t have to talk myself out of it! Hehe. AND, when the bus drops us walkers off, there is no lifts going past, and no turning back as we’re all so eager to get home! I sleep like a log too!

Errrh, berate me if you will, but I don’t believe in exercise.
    Completely over-rated.

Actually, it’s been proven as a weight-loss measure you’re better off just eating less calories. How long does it take to work off a cheeseburger?
The answer is too long. Better to have a healthy salad instead.

For those people who want to be fit and ‘toned’, here’s a tip ….your partner really doesn’t care. They just love you for who you are.
As my hubbie says ‘I love your body….. it’s so SOFT’.

P.S. Still waiting for that exercise ‘high’ people keep talking about. It has never come my way. When does this ‘high’ come to visit? I have Tim Tams waiting for it.

I dont exercise for my partner’s approval. I tend to get back pain and exercise, particularly to keep a strong core, helps immmensly with it. And I really love feeling fit and strong.

But if no exercise works for you, go with it – each to their own!

Why would you assume the only reason people exercise is to lose weight or look good for their partner?

If they’re the only reasons you’ve ever tried exercising then that’s why you’re not getting a ‘high’.

I was not implying that people should get toned for their parnter’s approval!

The point was other people don’t care what you look like – the ones that love you just love you for who you are. This is regardless if you have a six pack or toned arms.

I agree that people exercise to feel better about themselves, but I did the cost/benefit analysis and for me it’s not worth it.

Exercise is not over rated, apart from the obvious superficial benefits it dramatically decreases the risk of multiple serious chronic illness and can relieve the symptoms of many others, it maintains your bone mineral density which gets more important in age when the bones naturally loose their structural integrity, it also helps to maintain your strength and aerobic compaction so you are not incapacitated by 70, and yes, that can happen!
You dont have to like exercise, and even though you should do it, you dont have to, but the benefits of exercise are not over rated, in fact they are finding more and more benefits of exercise.

Or just being outside in general. I try my best to run, go to the gym and do aerobics (i’m not the most athletic person) but it doesn’t take much to take my neice and nephew outside and play with them for hours on end. Nothing gets you going like a 3 year old screaming ‘try and catch me’.

I’m all over the place, trying to fit exercise around my life. I swim as often as I can – usually 3-4 times a week. Some days it’s 6am (which I hate as the pool is so crowded), weekend days it’s mid-afternoon or around 8am. However two nights ago I went to the pool at 9pm. I thought it would be awful as I was tired, but I loved it. They only had half the lights on so it was very meditative, and after 9:30 I had the whole pool to myself. It was really peaceful. Unfortunately I have had things on last night and tonight but I’m going to try it again tomorrow night.

I really enjoyed reading your story Nat! I could really relate to it!!
I used to always roll my eyes at those highly motivated exercisers going running in the morning…until I became one of them…
I NEVER in my life thought I’d do runnning. And that too in the morning.
OMG mornings and I never get along. And running…that was like torture in my books….
But I had to go on fertility drugs a few years ago…and that literally made me go crazy. I was just so irritable and moody and restless…so horrible to be around. So I decided I should do some exercise…
hate the gym and couldn’t afford to pay either…
so that left me with walking (I couldn’t ever imagine running at that stage). I had to do mornings because I knew I needed company and motivation and that was the only time my hubby could come with me. He works too late in the evenings and I am stuffed from work. And I knew I couldn’t do it alone – I’d make up excuses. So then we decided we’d do it together. We’d wake up at 5:45am and leave the house and walk for 2km….it was hard but together we just started doing it….walking then became waking and jogging slowly….then just jogging….then running and jogging…then just running…it just happened…and it was the BEST EVER FEELING every morning. And I became less hormonal and crazy and started to not mind getting up to do it. OMG it was such a crazy experience. We also got pregnant after a few months. And I really feel that the running helped release my stress and anxiety. I’d highly recommend it. And for anyone who says they CAN’T. Trust me….I said the same thing. And I pretty damn lazy. But if you set yourself small goals and with another person to motivate you…it might just happen. Now I have to get back into again…baby is 8 months… hoping to start again soon!!

As a relatively new runner, I agree! The sense of accomplishment is a great feeling.

I’ve been going to the gym for two months now – an achievement I’m proud of! I’ve had a chronic neck injury for years, re-injured it recently, got my doctor to give me a program, and joined Fitness First. Discovered what works for me is all pool based. I can go really hard in terms of speed and time – because I’m in the pool, it doesn’t hurt til about an hour later!! I’ve also figured out that I need to go directly from work – if I go home first, I’m tempted to not go. So my bag goes in the car in the morning, I change at the gym. Worked my way up to 4 x 45-60 mins a week. Already had to buy a new swimsuit and bra because I’ve gone down a size. I’m really excited about it – I’ve stuck with it, my neck is coping with it, and I’m seeing the difference too!!

I have my cross trainer and treadmill set up in front of the TV, so I’ll just put on Modern Family or Friends and do half an hour on each. Perrrrfect!

OK, question – what do you ‘run to/from work’ types do with your STUFF? I take a big handbag to work each day with regular bag stuff, work papers, lunch, etc. Do you put your handbag stuff into a backpack and then wear that? Do you not take stuff to work? Do you run with your handbag?! Do you take your gym clothes to and from work each day, or take a weeks’ worth of work clothes to the office on Mondays?

I go home on the bus and then go for a run, which on some (most) days seems counter-intuative. Could be saving time and money by running home but am so confused about the logistics of clothing and bag stuff! :)

I’ve never figured that either. Most of my work clothes aren’t wash’n'cotton so I cant just fold it up into a backpack. But bringing a weeks worth of clothes to work just seems like a major hassle.

When I’ve done it I just took a backpack with me to work with gym stuff in it and ran home with my stuff (work clothes, lunch boxes) in that. You need one that doesn’t bounce too much while you run/chaff you. Helps if it has the strap that goes around the waist too to minimise movement.

I think we need to hear from Nat how she did it as well. The only way I’ve managed to comfortably run with a backpack is to have it over one shoulder and stabilised with my arm/elbow — I guess you could do that and swap sides every km or so, but still… I go swimming, which doesn’t have these tricky decisions.

I prefer exercising in the morning because it gives me an energy burst to start the day. If I exercise any time after about 5pm I can’t sleep and end up spending the entire night tossing and turning. It doesn’t matter what I do to wind down afterwards, I just feel way too wired to sleep. Does this happen with anyone else or is it just me?

Timely! I just started walking to work from Town Hall. It is a 25 minute walk to my office in Pyrmont, and I feel so good about myself. Sitting on the tram sucks, it’s lazy and crowded.

Walking from the train fits right into my schedule, and then I hop on the tram to Central at night. When I am fitter I might walk back to Town Hall after work!

I’m definitely a morning exerciser, up at 6 every day for either a long walk or run with my dogs. It took me a while to be able to get up every morning. I used to be so bad that I had to have my clothes, socks and shoes beside the bed to motivate me to get up otherwise I couldn’t be bothered, and I’d set about 5 alarms. Even then it was hard. But eventually it became a routine and now I feel bad for my dog and my body if I miss my morning exercise

I’m an evening exerciser. I’m so not a morning person. I tried it, but doesn’t work for me. The only time I exercise in the morning is Saturdays, but my class doesn’t start until 10.15am which is fine with me!

I just do it. I make mine a non negoitable time in my diary. Okay, I ocassionally miss a session here and there due to social or work commitments but that is the exception rather than the rule. Being too tired or hungover is not an excuse as far as I’m concerned. It helps that I’ve found what I love…group fitness. So I fit in as many pump, balance, sh’bam and combat classes as I can in a week. I wish I was a runner, it would make exercise so much easier, could do it anywhere. But I just can’t get into it. It’s not stimulating enough for me.

If you enjoy a group atmosphere you could see if there are any local marathon clubs. Many of them cater to every level of fitness and they will often run interval sessions at local parks. Intervals are a good way to get started if you can’t run for long periods of time. As a general rule start out with small runs and extend them over time. General rule is to extend each run by no more than five minutes at a time. Any more and you risk injuring yourself.

A big part of being a good runner is in your head. A lot of people stop running because it hurts. Running long distance or running reasonably hard hurts, it hurts for everyone and it is supposed to be uncomfortable. You just keep on going. Small caveat: When I say hurts, I mean the exertion hurts, some small niggles are normal, as is that burning muscle feeling. There is a line though that you learn to recognize when normal running pain turns into “somethinng is wrong” pain and you need to cease and desist.

Here’s a few things to try, they helped me start…
        - put some audiobooks on your iPod. You want to hear what happens next so you run the next day too. Helps with housework too!
        - know that most of it is in your head as You sound pretty fit
        - start little and work your way up (my first goal was 2 km)
        - don’t run on un-motivated days. This’ll just make you hate it!

I’m a PT so very used to getting up to run 5:30am bootcamps. It really is the best time of the day because you get it over and done with so after work you can just go straight home and relax. HOWEVER I can only get up at sparrow fart if it’s for my clients. More than happy to get up and train them because I have to and it’s my job. If it’s just for my own personal fitness then no hope in hell. Can’t make myself part with my bed. No one is forcing me or waiting for me at the gym so I just stay under the covers.

I used to love going to spin classes and the best instructor did his classes during my lunchbreak so I started going to them. Which lasted 2 weeks. You see, I had to leave work 10 minutes before my lunchbreak started to get to the gym and join the queue to get a token for his class, because everyone else loved him to but they had limited bikes, so only handed out tokens to the first 25 people there. Then I had to get changed quickly once I had my token to make sure I didnt get stuck with one of the old rusty bikes. Finish the class, have a shower, get dressed, race back to work. But I’m still sweating and cooling down from my workout. And getting back to work 10 minutes after my lunchbreak ended. So I had to duck to the loo several times each afternoon to top up my deodorant so I didnt stink the office out and then had to work later to make up for lost time. I quit the lunchtime workouts after 2 weeks, it was too hard! I started going to classes after work and it was so much better and the gym was empty!

For years I’ve tried to be that person who wakes up in the morning throws on some clothes and heads out the door to go exercise but for years I’ve failed because it’s just not me! I exercise in the afternoon or early evening. My sister on the other hand is at the gym at 6am every morning… don’t know how she does it!

good on you nat! I exercise immediately after I finish work- I live 5 mins walk from work (lucky me I know) and I go home get changed and get out the door before I have 5 mins to think about it. It’s always hard to start, you just gotta get yourself out the door! If you don’t feel like it, do a longer warm up (ie walk for a while before you start running) and you’ll soon be in the mood! I think one of Michelle Bridges techniques is a “10 minute layby” where you promise you will work out for 10 mins then if you don’t feel like it after that you can stop. 9 times out of 10 you will want to keep going. Happy exercising everyone!

I used to walk 10km to work every morning. God I loved it. It cleared my head, it got me pumped for the day ahead. The busy roads weren’t the best, but then once I hit the Yarra River, I was cruising, watching all the fit rowers. I did not ever crash into the embankment from ogling the men rowing along.

I used to nip into work on a Sunday night and drop off clothes that I would need for the week. That way, I only had to walk with a few light items in my mini-backpack.

For the first time in my life, exercise now feels like a chore. Which I hate, because I have always loved it. I need to change something. I will be coming back to check on this post for ideas people!

I am a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor, and I have always told my clients/participants that the best time to exercise is what suits you. If you can’t function in the morning, don’t force yourself, you won’t get an effective workout. Far better to workout when you are mentally prepared.
Well done for the running home -the other key to exercise is to do something you enjoy.

    Love the post Nat!

Its so true that the best time to exercise is the time that is best for you. Even after working a 9-5 office job for 3 years now, too many years of bar work during my gap years and uni means i still struggle to get up at 630am each morning. A girlfriend loves exercising in the AM, and i’ve been to a few classes with her, but find i spend the first 20 minutes sluggish and still waking up so don’t as much out of the session as i would a PM workout. Going to the gym straight after work also means I beat peak hour traffic on the bus and don’t sit on the couch from 6 – 10pm – bonus! and something must be working – i’m 7 kilo’s down and onto toning now!
    yay!

Last year I was going overseas to Europe so needed to get into shape for bikini/summer season. I started the Tracey Anderson 30 day food and excersice plan (book and DVD) about 6weeks before my trip – before that I hardly excercised at all.
I would wake up at 6am for my workout…It wasn’t that hard as I was really motivated and by day 6 I was right into it!
I found the morning time was the easiest for me – my hubby was at the gym, my boys still asleep and by the time my workout was over, the sun would come through the darkness…I felt alive!! And I lost inches everywhere…it was great!
After the trip I didn’t exercise much but lately Ive been doing 3 half hour sessions in the evening – Im trying my best to head to bed early and get back on the morning session…its better for me, a busy mum, a working mum…I think I will leave the evening to relaxing!

i used to exercise in the mornings and LOVED it,it meant it was over and done, and i felt good all day which seemed to help my food choices also.

but since kids and shift work, its become a bit harder, still occassionally go for walks in the mornings, used to be great when my littlest was a baby, he would just sleep the whole time.. the last few times have been whinging and carrying on from the moment he gets strapped in the pram because he wants to get out and walk too…which means we end up walking at a toddlers pace and stopping frequently to look at empty chip packets or a dead worm on the pavement or whatever.

ive since joined at a 24/7 gym but as no one is available in the mornings to watch the kids i go after work at nights…. this often means im in the gym between 9-11pm.
amazingly i actually enjoy this more than i expected, ive always been a nightowl and i find it incredibly refreshing both mentally and physically.

i often leave work feeling mentally drained and frustrated..work in an inbound call centre which means chained to a desk for the duration of the shift saying the same thing over and over and over and often to angry people…. so getting to the gym, just plugging in to my favourite songs on my ipod and drifting off into my own little world of thoughts while on the treadmill is great me time…burns off the frustration of work too!!

Usually I go home and then go for a run – but you’ve just inspired me to check and it would only be 3.85km for me to run home. That’s shorter than my usual run! Might give it a go one night this week!!

“When is the best time to exercise?”

    Tomorrow.

Speaking seriously, though, I do better in the evenings – stopping at the gym on the way home from work.

Such funny timing because I blogged about this yesterday.

It is morning for me because evening are too full of stuff. I loathe it. Every morning when the alarm goes off I groan but I make myself get up and do the exercise and I do feel better for it. The treat for doing it is a proper set of stretches. Stretches always make me feel more comfortable in my body and I really quite love them.

Anyway, here is my whole post on making myself exercise: http://blithemoments.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/stretching.html

This morning Jamila and I walked to work for the first time. 8kms. 50mins. The best part was that we both had to borrow backpacks from our roommates to transport our stuff. (I haven’t worn a backpack since high school.)
The other best part was when it started to rain….

Sure it is 8km? Walking 8km in 50 mins is faster than some people can jog it…

I do both morning and afternoon exercise but my motivation sucks either way. I play weird mind games with myself in the morning. I wake up at 4.45am and my stuff is already laid out and I tell myself “Just go to training. If you get there and decide you don’t want to do anything then that is fine.” So I get in the car and go to swimming training, or meet people for cycling or whatever. Once I get there I tell myself “Well, you here now. At least get on your bike/ in the pool and give it a go. If you don’t like it you can stop.” And then I start my training session and then my brain goes “HAHA TRICKED YOU! Now you are into it. Can’t back out now or everybody will think your a wuss! Suck it up princess!”.

With two young children and work, I can often be found on the exercise bike or doing Pilates in front of the TV at 9pm, which is the only time I have. It still burns calories.

In the lead up to my wedding, I joined female only group personal training classes (aptly named Bootycamp). It was amazing motivation for me – twice a week 1 hr long sessions got my fitness right up there and I managed to achieve my goals. Now that I’m back from my honeymoon, I’m going to be joining again for the motivation factor! I need to exercise in a group unfortunately, otherwise it will never happen!!

    5am.

There is very little that can go wrong and prevent me from actually doing it at this time of the morning. By 6am I am done, feel fantastic and ready for my two gorgeous kids to get up and into the day with me!

Then it is time for breakfast which at the moment is two boiled eggs, cut in half and spread with Australian mustard and topped with baby spinach leaves. Try it! It is life changing ;)

  47. My new housemates are totally into exercise and it is GREAT.

I had been so slack for so long because I was so flipping miserable with Ex Mr W. When we broke up my friends told me that I should keep my gym membership because the endorphins would be really good for me at this tough time. LUCKY I LISTENED.

We go after work because I already get up at 6am to get to work by 7:45 so there is no way I’m getting up earlier! Last night my housemate hammered me with a cardio workout and tonight we are going to do weights. Burpees: worst INVENTION EVER!!

Day time me thinks I should get up early every morning before work and go for a brisk walk/jog, just for half an hour. Find 30 and all that. Plus it will put me in good spirits for the day ahead.

6.30am me would rather snooze the alarm for an hour and give myself 15 minutes to get ready for work. So morning exercising just doesn’t work for me.

I used to be an afterwork exerciser but then when I got a boyfriend about 3 years ago I ended up missing lots of workouts because of seeing him so I decided I needed to become a morning exerciser. My body actually got used to it pretty quickly. The first few times the alarm went off at 5.45am I really struggled to get out of bed and I would be dead tired by 3pm but now it’s just become the norm and my bodyclock has adapted. Can’t stay up past 10.30 really though or I’ll pay the price the next day. I will never ‘enjoy’ getting up at that time of the morning but I never regret it once I’m at the gym. Except maybe this morning when I smashed my finger under a barbell.
