Julia Kozerski has the courage of a lion. There are naked self-portraits on her website so raw, so brutally honest they’re almost hard to look at.

Tipping the scales at 153kg last year, the 27 year old photographer made the decision to capture – photo by photo – her year long weight loss journey. Watching Kozerski ‘slim’ down in her photo series “Change Room” is nothing short of  addictive.  She shrinks before your eyes, an act which gives no insight into the huge changes to nutrition and exercise she embarked up on to lose weight:

But those images  – as fascinating as they are – are not what everyone is talking about.

What left the world gobsmacked was her second photoseries “Half” where  Kozerski captures the raw emotion of becoming half her size.  Photographing herself naked in a range of poses and revealing the excess skin she now carries, the images are confronting and extremely raw.  In some Kozerski has tears rolling down her cheeks…

(Some photos NSFW)

...or for Worse

But they are not tears of joy.  The Milwaukee native says her images shed light on the brutal truth of what it’s like to become half your size.

‘While I genuinely believed that my hard work and dedication would transform me into that “perfect” person of my dreams, the reality of what has resulted is quite the opposite. My experience contradicts what the media tends to portray. While it is easy to celebrate and appreciate the dramatic physical results of such an endeavor, underneath the layers of clothing and behind closed doors, quite a different reality exists.’

She’s a brave, brave woman. And we’ll be hearing from Julia here on Mamamia in a few weeks.

OMG You are such a strong wonderful woman. No, it’s not beautiful, but what an achievement!! It’s actually more than beautiful, it’s the human body and what it can do. I’m not sure – does the skin at least ‘begin’ to shrink a little after a certain time? I’m just so in awe of what you have done. I’m a large girl and due to a health issue, am missing a leg. I can’t even conceive of enough exercise to make this sort of change to my body. Oh darling, I feel for you so much, I’m scared of sounding trite, but what a role model!! You are wonderful!

These images are very moving, brave and confronting for someone like me. I am 35kg down with 15kg to go in my losing weight/gaining health journey and it’s so important to address the mental shifts that take place when you lose weight. I am blessed to have kept my shape (bar a few stretch marks) thanks to my wonderful personal trainer who is my sounding board and has made me fit and strong inside and out. :)

    At a loss for words.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey! Thank you for being brave enough to do so.

I hope having gone through the journey and also having shared it with so many people can create a little space of happiness and self confidence in your heart, that will grow a little every day. So that you can eventually appreciate what you’ve done for yourself and your future health.

Having just given birth and remembering what my first delivery did to my body I so relate to your pain, albeit quite possibly not in the same magnitude. I must stress though, that as time progresses the saggy boobs and wider bum become just part of living. Other things take priority. Hopefully you will be able to find things like that as well.

Best wishes to you. And THANK YOU again <3

Thanks for the insight Julia. When I see people who have achieved such incredible weight loss I just think how amazing they must feel to look so great. I didn’t think about the naked part and still being trapped in your body after going thru the transformation. Such an important and brave photo series to share with the outside world. Personally, I need to lose 25-30kg to have a healthy BMI and I am struggling to even care at the moment.

What a journey. The photos are movingly raw, but truly incredible.
The body gives us so much, but it is always the source of both pleasure and pain. You are an inspiration Julia. Thanks for your honesty.

I love this. Such an emotional journey, losing that much weight. And going on such a life changing journey and realising that perfection doesn’t lie at the end. It’s truly about learning to love yourself, no matter how you look. Asthetics aside, her health must have increased ten fold.

Julia is both brave and beautiful. The photos show the amazing journey her body has been on. The journey doesn’t end there. Some of that skin will adjust given time exercise and good diet. she will get older and more wrinkled..we all do..taking care of our bodies is a life long enterprise that is the reality. No one is an airbrushed lolly pop in real life.

is the skin stretching scenario lessened if the weight is lost gradually?

      Absolutely.

I have lost 20 kg in the last 10 years (you don’t have to do it this slowly, that’s just how it happened) and I have no stretched skin (other than from natural ageing… with big boobs and all).

I started Easy Slim in 2003 and lost about 25kg, and have maintained that loss – because it was a gradual process, skin stretching wasn’t an issue.

How much skin sag you have depends on your age and how much weight you have lost. Losing weight slowly, and when you are younger, will help but skin can only contract so far. If you are very obese, there will be some sag.

oh thanks guys… yeah i always wondered about this… i have always felt like all the diet industry / reality tv shows that encouraged fast weight-loss were doing a disservice to people and damaging their bodies.
this woman lost half her body weight in a year… i mean that seems like a really physically and psychologically traumatic thing to go through… it just makes me wonder how ultimately healthy it is… again both physically and psychologically.

What a fantastic and fascinating journey she takes us on through her photography. You can see the raw emotions she is feeling as she comes to terms with how her body is changing…how her very feelings about her identity change as her body changes.

I do love that you can see how much her husband loves her regardless. he is just there, supportive and constant.

this is raw and real. so great.

Good on her for loosing the weight! She now lowers her risk of dying from heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a range of other illnesses associated with obesity. So what if her skins a bit saggy, my skin is a bit saggy after having 2 babies but that’s life! Not something to feel sad about.

I am sure it isn’t that they are offended more that we aren’t used to seeing naked men. We are very used to seeing near naked or naked women in advertising etc everywhere, it isn’t as common with men

I wish I had that courage when I embarked on my journey 63kg down and I still can’t see the difference – good on you for having the courage to show that loosing a lot of weight not only makes a massive change in your clothes appearance but also your naked appearance – I have massive body hang up because I do have excess skin and flabby arms – i’m lucky my husband has called me beautiful clothed at 138kg and naked at 138kg and now at 76kg with saggy boobs and excess stomach skin and not so tight thighs he loves me – If only I could learn to love me!

She’s done such a great job losing the weight! I also think taking these pictures shows that no one can be perfect and thats what is normal. It’s the horrible truth for many people who lose a lot of weight, excess skin, and I’m sure the realization of body changes during weightloss would be a very emotional experience. Love the pics

I know we are all probably expected to come on here and say how brave and inspiring Julia is but really, there’s no need for those nude photos. The truth is, in clothes, Julia looks way better slim than she does fat and she should be congratulated.
So what if she’s got saggy skin? How many people see you in the buff? The vast majority of us don’t look good naked, we all look better in clothes. I don’t really get what those photos are supposed to achieve.

It says she’s a photographer, so I suppose there’s an element of creative license in expressing her feelings. I think what she’s trying to say is that although she is now half her size and looks great in clothes, when she goes home and looks in the mirror, naked, a lot of the emotional issues remain.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head there.

Losing weight is meant to be an exercise (no pun intended) for yourself, not others. So what do you do when you lose the weight and you are still unhappy with yourself.

I think this is less about how she looks, and more about how she feels.

Anyone who’s had to lose a dramatic amount of weight often thinks that their world will magically be perfect once they reach size/weight X. That’s really not the truth, and I think that’s what her photographs are trying to show.

Your life is about more than how you look, or what you weigh. You need to be happy with yourself, truly happy, both inside and out (including clothed and naked).

Yes, she should be congratulated for making herself far more healthy than she was but this goes beyond just health. Part of the reason women strive to lose weight and get fit is to improve their body image. Unfortunately for those of us who have lost a significant amount of weight (like the photographer here, I also have literally half of myself to lose in total) we have dreams of how we would like to look and that, sadly, is far from the reality that we actually get. It’s extremely bittersweet.

It definitely is, Anon. But I sort of liked the way Julia said she now considers the imperfections as battle scars. I’m guessing from that comment that she didn’t just chop it all off, and thought that was a fascinating attitude!

Keeping the excess skin could cause a variety of skin issues though, not to mention the weight of the excess skin (there would be kilos of it)pulling/causing strain on the non-excess skin. However it is a financial burden as I don’t believe you get much back from medicare or health insurance

        GD Star Rating

It’s also a considerable operation as it has to be done carefully so as not to compromise blood supply with the skin.
