new balance 3 380x251 How do you motivate yourself to exercise?

Tumultuous. That’s the only way I can describe the relationship I have with exercise. Sometimes I love it but a lot of the time my inner sloth kicks in and I will do anything I can to avoid heading to the gym or going out a run or hitting the pool for a swim. Baking a cake, rearranging my wardrobe, catching up with friends I haven’t seen in ten years and don’t particularly like, cleaning the grouting between the shower tiles – you name it and I’ll do it instead of exercise.

I’ve always hoped that one morning I would just wake up with the sudden urge to exercise all the time and as much as possible. I watch the Olympics on television or I hear the Rocky theme music and I’m overcome with visions of me leaping out of bed to run 400 laps around the local oval in less than ten minutes. It has taken me a very long time to realise that no such thing happens to anyone. Ever.

But I have gotten better. I’m improving and I have discovered that above all else: motivation is key. Because nobody feels like exercising until they’re actually doing it – that’s when the fun bit kicks in.

I’ve had to come up with a few handy little tricks to beat that evil inner sloth. Some are sensible, some are simple, some are perhaps a little odd but they all work for me.

1)    Try something new – with a friend.

One day, I got so sick of the same old exercise routine that I rang a friend and invited him to play tennis with me. I haven’t played tennis since school camp in primary school so I’m no Serena Williams – but who cares? We had a ball (no pun intended) despite spending a lot more time laughing at each other rather than actually playing. Make sure you try out a new sport or activity with a friend – at least the first time – because then you’re not tempted to give up too easily.

2)    Buy yourself new gear.

There is no better motivation to exercise than investing in a pretty new outfit to do it in. How many times have you thought about running around the park and decided against it because you don’t want anyone to see you in your decade-old Mickey Mouse t-shirt, stinky grey trackpants and dirty ponytail? Exactly. It may sound superficial but buying a fun exercise outfit (think NEON!) can help you to actually look forward to getting out there.

3)    Embrace incidental exercise

Take your new gear and then WEAR IT. All the time. On the weekends, I live in my exercise clothes because then I’m more inclined to do incidental exercise. I walk to the shops instead of driving, I run up stairs instead of walking, etc. You see? Incidentally active. Take that, inner sloth!

4)    Sleep in your exercise gear.

I know this sounds ridiculous but this is what’s working the best for me this winter. It’s so cold in the mornings and I hate getting up knowing that I have to change out of my warm pyjamas and into my exercise clothes. Having my exercise gear already on when I get out of bed leaves no time for my brain to protest – all I have to do is roll out of bed, put my shoes on and stumble out the door. (Just make sure your gear is comfy – and ah, clean!)

I play basketball 5 times a week and this motivates me because i HAVE to go. My team relies on me to turn up and i cant just say “Oh i cant be bothered”. Team sports are fun, and you play and get fit while doing it. I run for 40 minutes and dont even notice im running half the time. Be accountable to a team and you might even make a bunch of friends too, i have!

My secret is- I don’t. I don’t motivate myself. People seem to think they have to feel all “Yay! Let’s go”. Personally I just make myself walk out the the door. It is getting out there that is the hardest part if you ask me. So, I don’t even think about the exercise part or try and work up motivation. I just committ to getting out the door with my running shoes on.

I used to motivate myself to exercise 5 times a week for an hour at a time by telling myself “he will never want you unless you’re thinner; his wife is so much skinnier than you no wonder he loves her and not you” etc etc. After 2 years of turmoil in which I teetered at the edge of anorexia I finally got over my unrequited love for a married man and did not exercise for about 18 months.

I have recently started seeing a personal trainer (10 weeks now) twice a week for an hour and it is the best thing I have ever done. Do yourself a favour and do not see one of those people who went to big commercial “fitness academies” for 6 weeks and are let loose in gyms to injure people – find a trainer who studied exercise science at university for four years and knows what they’re talking about. (Caveat – one of my friends did that course and is a fantastic trainer but she took the time to do extra self-learning on the body and techniques, etc other than those taught in the course which she freely admits is often not worth the paper it’s written on).

When I want to exercise after work I get changed before I leave work. That way if I love motivation in the car I feel crazy to just drive home in my workout gear.

Have a goal! I was never a “fitness person” but having something to work towards helps. I would suggest signing up early to a fitness event – next month I’m competing in bridge to Brisbane. Knowing that I have to run in public, around other runners, motivates me to get off my butt!

Keep an exercise diary – write on your calendar every time you exercise and make sure the calendar is in a highly visible place, like next to your work computer or on the fridge. When you’re on a roll, seeing all of your workouts on the calendar will keep you motivated. And when you’ve been slacking off there’s no way to say to yourself ‘ohh i’m pretty sure i went to the gym last Monday….or was it the one before?’

Get a dog! Get an active dog that needs daily walks or runs and you just have to take them out. My faithful companion gets twice daily walks and because of her, I’m probably fitter and happier than before. She kept me active through my pregnancy and dragged me out of the house when I was foggy with the sleep deprivation of a new mum. Best personal trainer ever!!

For me it’s the memory of seeing my daughters at the finish line of fun runs, seeing them clapping, smiling and saying “that’s my mummy”. That image gets me out of bed on cold mornings to run. I know that not only is it doing me good, but I’m also being a positive role model for them.

Before you go to bed put on your skinny self jeans & have a good long look…. Eeeck! Then as soon as you get up put on the briefest bikini you have in front of the full length mirror – a sobering sight if there was one….. Do this for a few days & I’m guaranteed to be getting up earlier & tackling the park. Summer & bare skin isn’t that far away.

I drive down to the esplanade, put my mp3 player on and run along the footpath that follows the coast. It feels like an escape for my mind and body. There are other people out running, walking or just strolling and enjoying the weather. It’s feels rewarding and I look forward to it, much more than I did running around the suburbs or the oval. PS – I wasn’t a runner before this. I started out walking and enjoyed getting out so much that I worked my way up to running. This was at 27 and I had never run before in my adult life.

Get youself some Asics instead and hit the pavement.

Maybe you just had the wrong fit of shoes for your feet.

I always get mine fitted at Active Feet, the store is run by podiatrists and they get the right shoes for you depending on your arch, your tread (they put you on a treadmill with a camera trained on your feet), your foot shape, etc.

They stock all the good running shoes, including New Balance.

What works for one person’s foot doesn’t necessarily work for another’s.

I bought an exercise bike because I figured that if I couldn’t motivate myself to exercise while sitting down and watching TV, then nothing was going to motivate me.

We actually wore out the last bike and had to buy a new one, so it’s working for us.

1.Be accountable to someone. It could be a personal trainer, a friend or even join an online health group. For me having a personal trainer is my biggest motivation because I am accountable to someone and don’t want to let them down by skipping a work out or eating bad food. Sure, its $35 a week, but I save that money by not eating out one night a week because I have to get up early and go to the gym or not having an extra two cocktails because I want to go to the gym in the morning. Same goes with an exercise friend. Don’t have the money for a PT or none of your friends share your health goals? Join a health group online or follow a group on Facebook. You’ll make new friends and support each other along the way. Who knows, some of the people may even live in your area and you can run/walk/hike together.
    2. Make a list. I was 10 kg overweight and needed a change so I wrote down everything I didn’t like about my body – mentally and physically. It was honest and it hurt. But then I wrote down everything I could do to change it. I had a choice. Stay the same and be unhappy or change things. Every day I am thankful I had the courage to make changes.
    3. Appreciate habits take time to develop. Just like the habit of eating a chocolate bar at 3pm each day took time to form, so too does the habit of going to the gym and eating heatlthy. In the beginning you just have to do it. Put your runners on, grab your headphones and head out the door. It does suck getting up at 5.30 when it’s raining and cold but you just get used to it, there is no other way around it.
    4. If you’re going to eat bad food make sure it tastes good and don’t feel guilty. If I really feel like pizza then I’m going to eat pizza. It just won’t be crappy $6 Dominos pizza, it will be pizza I’m going to enjoy like the pizza found at a good pizza bar. I’m not going to beat myself up for it. Instead I’ll be proud because I am fit and strong and have worked hard enough to deserve those slices.

This is a good one! My main motivation for exercising is the fact that exercise and all the endorphins I get at the end of a spin or pump class really helped me get through a rough patch over the last two years. Even if it was only temporary, I always felt that exercise provided clarity, perspective and made me feel like things would work out in the end (and they have! :D ).

My other, more minor reason is that I have a mad lady crush on Michelle Obama and her super awesome arms. Those arms alone were the factor that pushed me into going to the boxing classes at the gym by myself, even though I was terrified of going alone and doing a class like that when I felt so unfit. I know it sounds vain to be crushing on someone’s arms but hey, it worked for me!

Mine’s easy and it works every time. As I’m sitting or lying at home deciding whether or not to go exercise, I visualise myself walking out ‘after’ the exercise… either visualise walking out of yoga or walking out of the gym, or walking home from a swim. As soon as my mind gets a look and a taste of ‘that’ feeling (post-exercise glow), I’m up and on my way. Works a treat.

Im up and down when it comes to exercise..despite having a gym membership for all but a year or so since i was 18, and plenty of good walking tracks around the water nearby i will sometimes go months without doing anything more than incidental exercise.
My main motivation and drive comes when i have something big coming up and want to look good., then the determination flows and im exercising 4-5 times a week and eating well.

Surprisingly I have never been more motivated, or fitter or thinner than since my son was born…pre-pregnancy my husband and i had fallen into bad habits, both working long hours and commuting, coming home with takeaway cos we couldnt be bothered to cook and thinking nothing of sharing a bottle or two of wine while we ate it. the weight packed on!!

but with the arrival of my son came a new motivation…i found it a great release and a nice break from the house to bundle him up in the pram and go out for a walk, listening to my favourite tunes on my ipod. this sparked me to eat better and i was breastfeeding and drinking loads of water and the weight just started to fall off…this kept the motivation strong as it was so thrilling to start fitting back into jeans i hadnt worn in years!

I always make a deal with myself:

If I don’t want to go for a run, I will get my exercise gear on anyway, and just leave the house and start walking.

If I REALLY can’t be bothered after 5 minutes, I’ll let myself turn back and just be happy with 10 minutes outdoors. But most likely I’ll just keep going!

(I actually have turned back twice, because I was just too tired, but this is a good thing – it means I know I’m not lying to myself when I make the deal. Knowing I can turn back means it’s easier to keep going, if that makes sense!)

I like to exercise in my own home. I have allocated a small area upstairs as my ‘gym corner’ with my treadmill, mat and other bits and pieces. I keep everything in this one designated spot (iPod, runners, towel, water bottle, etc) and have placed a couple of pictures of women with bodies I admire in front of the timer on the treadmill so I’m not constantly watching the time. In all the pics the women are running, which I find more motivating. I have a pact with myself that at the end of a workout, I do something nice for myself. I exercise in the evening so I take the time to ‘pamper’ myself by doing a face mask, exfoliation, paint my nails, hair treatment, whatever, after my shower. It kind of makes me see my exercise time as my ‘day spa/me time’ session instead of just plain boring running and it all works together to make me feel good and look good!

I’ve been the queen of procrastination and creative excuses for not exercising for many years and my ageing body shows the effects of that.

I have finally got myself motivated by doing a combination of things : I printed some photos of myself in underwear out and stuck them on the wardrobe, bathroom mirror and fridge. Luckily I live alone so am not scaring anyone but myself – I will just have to remember to hide them when people come over :) I also sleep in clothes I can wear walking – I just get out of bed, throw a warm top and shoes on and go and don’t allow myself time for the excuses.

it’s been 3 days now !! I just have to keep it up

I always hated exercise as a teenager, and when I was 21 I booked a beach holiday to Thailand with 2 of my friends who both happened to have fantastic bodies. At the time I probably had about 10kg to lose and needed to tone up, and the thought of lying on a beach next to them in 6 months time was the best motivation. By the time the holiday came ound, I was 12kg lighter, fit and feeling so confident.
I do still go through phases of being lazy with exercising, particularly if things are stressful at work etc, but having a goal in mind really is the best for me.

I find exercise is what keeps me sane, running especially! 12 months ago I exercised occassionaly, maybe once a week and was fairly unhappy and a little chubby. I was having a very stressful week at work, so one morning after a night shift, with my stress levels through the roof, I put my runners on and put on some good music and started to run…. Normally I could only run for a minute or two and then I would be out of breath, but for some reason I just kept running. Fast forward 12 months, and I exercise every day and have lost 10kg, which has put me in a very healthy weight range.

I met my partner 8 months ago, and at that stage I was 1-2kg off dropping the 10kg. I have kept the weight off since then and my partner is also a gym lover, so we keep each other motivated to be healthy and fit. I still each chocolate often, because its just one thing that I can’t live with out. I have such a bad sweet tooth, but savory I can live with out.

I have found a great balance of exercise to keep doing things I enjoy (I rotate between doing my own thing at the gym eg 6km run and 30mins weight, to classes such as pump, combat, spin and then also have a personal trainer twice a week)

I find an hour a day to do exericse whilst I am away at work doing 12 hour days, so there is really no excuse to say you don’t have the time. You need to make the time, because otherwise there are a million and one excuses you can make to avoid it. Never thought I would end up being a person that enjoys exercise, but the biggest benefit I have found has not been what it has done for my physical health, but for my mental health!

I kick started my winter workout plan early, with bootcamp in february. i’m no fitness junky, but the commitment to be up for training with a group twice a week, particularly as the days began to get shorter, meant I kept my routine and avoided that temptation to snooze as it got darker and colder. Having a group to train with helped too and the threat of your absence resulting in extra squats and burpies for your fellow bootcampers was good motivation to get up. After bootcamp several of my work colleagues and i started training for a 10km run and raised money for a charity close to the heart of one of our colleagues whose mother lost her battle with cancer the year prior. Having fundraised for the run, we owed it to our sponsors and each other to stick to training which included running twice a week with the group and taking classes at our work gym. The group aproach was also a great motivator in the sense that people were there to encourage you and notice your improvement, spurring you on further. You can buy new gear, sleep in it, try silly diets, but the best way is through diet and exercise. if you eat well, you train better and don’t feel so bad about the occassional reward!

Think of exercise as something you do each day like brushing your teeth, showering … Just put it on the list. Also, you don’t have to like exercise, just the results…. Don’t think too much about it, just get out the door – and remember, be kind to yourself… Don’t streas or beat yourself up if you miss a day or a few days, just pick yourself up again and start moving

Argh!! Today I cancelled my gym membership. I had barely used it but had to wait the year so I didn’t pay an extra cancellation fee. What a huge waste of money. I will never join a gym again!!!!

I used to live right around the corner from a gym, and did use it regularly – I was waiting when they opened at 6, and had a nice quiet 30-40 minute workout, then walked home. It was fantastic, but then I had to move, and had to cancel the membership.

One thing I learnt was that if you aren’t motivated to exercise, joining a gym will rarely help. Some people will find the desire to get their money’s worth will get them there, but most people will just keep on as before, but with the added annoyance of money disappearing from your bank account every month.

I have let my fitness lapse for a number of reasons, but I really felt Nat’s #4 resonnate with me – sleeping in my exercise clothes is the way of the future for me! Anon, it’s just about finding what works for you, and making it happen. Good luck to you, and happy money saving!

I hear what you’re saying about the gym. I have been a member of many gyms and wasted a whole lot of money on them. You need to find something that works for you, not everyone is happy to go to the gym but exercise doesn’t just have to happen there. Or maybe you just haven’t found the right gym that works for you.

Right now I’m a member of a gym that’s less than 5mins drive from my place, it’s open 24/7 and only costs my husband and I together $60/month so it works out very well for us.

Otherwise like I said if the gym isn’t your thing well there’s so many more other options, exercising outside (running/walking/biking), at home (you can buy your own free weights/any equipment) – youtube videos, things like p90x etc.

My point is you don’t need a gym to exercise.
