The Gogglebox moment that struck a chord all over Australia.

Gogglebox isn’t the type of show you watch expecting to get emotional.

But Thursday night’s episode (which aired on Wednesday on Foxtel’s Lifestyle channel) gave us a moment of insight into one of the reality stars’ personal struggles, and it struck a chord with viewers all over Australia.

Melbourne couple Wayne and Tom, who have been together for 15 years and have raised three children together, were watching same-sex couple Andy and Craig marry on Married at First Sightwhen Wayne placed his hand in Tom’s.

“Ahh, are you getting romantic?” asked Tom.

“No, it’s making me sad,” replied Wayne.

When Tom asked him why it was making him sad, Wayne said, “It’s mum’s birthday on Saturday, and it’s the one thing she wanted, was to see us married, and we’re never going to get to do it.”

It was an unexpectedly raw moment, as Wayne's voice started to crack under the weight of his words. Tom tried to comfort him by promising, "We can one day."

Wayne's honesty has caught the attention of fans, who started commenting on Gogglebox's video immediately.

Ford Carter wrote, "They can't get married when they've been together for over 10 years, but its okay for two complete strangers to do it for a TV show..."

Similarly, Louise Breadsell commented, "so terribly sad that 2 people who love each other haven't got the legal right to marry. Come on Australia get with the programme!!!"

Other comments expressed the opinion that it's an "absolute disgrace" that Australia is yet to allow marriage equality for all, and that the government will be wasting time, money and resources on a plebiscite.

Wayne's response to Married at First Sight echoes that of many viewers of the show, who believed it was "a kick in the guts" to air a same-sex wedding on national television, when same-sex couples aren't legally able to marry in their real lives.

Clearly, it placed a spotlight on what is a pressing and highly emotional issue for a majority of Australians.

We hope Tom's promise of "one day" comes very, very soon.

Gogglebox airs Wednesdays at 7.30pm on The LifeStyle Channel, and Thursdays at 9.00pm on Network TEN.
