A TV Show about people watching TV shows sounds like a stupid idea.

Except Gogglebox was the breakout show of 2015, and it’s returning to our screens this week.  NEW families, NEW shows. Opinionated television fanatics throwing one liners that will make you laugh, gasp and cringe.

Consider this your warning. Chuck a note in the diary. Put an alarm on your phone to remind you. Because Rosie Waterland, semi-professional TV watcher, says it’s GENIUS.
What makes it so good? As she explains in our TV podcast The Bingethere are three things that make this show irresistible:

The casting is brrrrrrilliant

It’s masterful.  Gay couple Wayne and Tom, always with a cocktail in hand and a pithy one-liner.  The posh indigenous art dealers Mick and Di, who sit ramrod-straight, shiraz in hand, trying to understand Keeping Up With The Kardashians. The Greek besties, Faye and Anastasia, who tell it like it is through a mouthful of ice cream.

You will LOVE them. All of them. For their honesty, their humanity and the uncensored observations that spring forth.

That’s a good look for you Adam and Symon!

The variety of shows will surprise you

The Gogglers watch a huge variety of programs. Sure, there will be the reality shows we all know, but they also watch David Attenborough documentaries, health shows, game shows, news and current affairs. The show offers a glimpse into the landscape and breadth of what’s on TV at the moment. And it’s not just bitchy comments over cups of tea and Tim Tams, there are moments of depth and gravitas too.

If you love The Binge, here’s your opportunity to come to our first-ever live recording, in Sydney on Thursday, April 7.

The Binge is all about frank, funny and smart conversation, what’s on the box and whether you should invest your precious time watching every season in existence.

And next week that conversation will be live in front of an audience for the very first time. Hosted by Monique Bowley and starring Rosie Waterland and Laura Brodnik, this is your opportunity to see your favourite podcast come to life.

It’s just like watching yourself. Which is strangely compelling.

This show totally flips the nature of watching TV. The focus is no longer about bitching couples looking for five minutes of fame on MKR or overwrought soap stars. The show is us.  We are watching us on the couch. These people drinking wine on the couch, eating icecream in the Lay-Z-Boy and talking shit about shows with their family/partner/bestie? THAT IS US.

This show takes the power and focus away from over-produced reality shows and puts it squarely back on everyday people and their observations.

There’s just nothing else like it. It’s TV eating itself. It’s TV inception. And it captures the way we watch TV like nothing else does.

Gogglebox Australia’s season 3 premiere is on Foxtel’s Lifestyle channel on Wednesday, April 6, at 7.30pm, and then broadcast on the Ten Network on Thursday, April 7, at 8.30pm.

The Binge is Mamamia’s TV podcast. Every week, Rosie Waterland and Laura Brodnick discuss the news, behind-the-scenes info, and what everyone’s watching that week. Subscribe in itunes or listen to the full episode here:
