SA1 380x251 WIN: A trip to South Australia for you and 3 friends

Last night I had a three-course dinner.

It had been a long day at work. So when I finally made it through my front door around 10pm, I was exhausted and extremely, extremely hungry.

I quickly identified the ingredients I would need for my feast and then settled down on the couch to enjoy it with a glass of fine wine (read: flat coke).

For entrée: Doritos. Of the Cheese Supreme variety.

For main: Doritos. Again. This time tantalisingly dipped in Greek yogurt. The good stuff. The fancy stuff. Probably imported. From Greece. Or Melbourne.

For dessert: Cadbury Marvellous Creations.

I will admit it wasn’t the most nutritious meal of my life. Nor was it the most delicious. But it was food.

There are times in your life when your soul needs food – actual, food that you eat. (Not music, or higher learning or spirituality or what not). The joy that comes from a truly wonderful meal, accompanied by grapes the way they’re supposed to be consumed, is incomparable.

The meals that you share with your family and friends – the one where you eat beautifully presented, lovingly prepared and skillfully cooked food, accompanied by wine created by those who know what they’re doing – those are the meals you never forget.

Personally, some of the best food (and wine) memories I’ve ever had were on holidays to South Australia’s beautiful Barossa and McLaren Vale wine regions.

sa3 380x252 WIN: A trip to South Australia for you and 3 friends

South Australia

There are more than 200 cellar doors that are an hour’s drive from Adelaide. 200 doors – all of which open to the magical goodness of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.

I’m not one of those wine drinkers who does the old swirl-and-sniff. Well, I do it for effect but I don’t gain any wine-wisdom from the practice. But I definitely know what I like and there is a reason South Australia is known all over the world for it’s fabulous wines – they’re exactly that, fabulous.

My personal favourite for tasting is the wonderful St Hallets cellar door in the Barossa region. It’s this beautiful old building, tucked away behind the bush and with a spectacular view of the vineyards.

You know the open fire, wood panelling and candlelight that you dream of when you’re stuck at the bus stop and it’s bloody freezing cold and starting to rain? THAT is what their cellar door is like. It’s the kind of space that makes your feel happy and warm and ah, a little bit tipsy, just by walking in the door.

And the food – oh the food. Last time I was in McLaren Vale for a day trip, it was to have lunch with some of my closest friends at the amazing d’Arry’s restaurant at D’Arenberg winery.

SA2 WIN: A trip to South Australia for you and 3 friends

South Australia

That lunch was the stuff that food fantasies are made of. I feel like my words simply cannot do justice to that phenomenal meal. For the record – I has blue swimmer crab ravioli, with broccolini, zucchini and goats cheese, with lobster medallions on top and a lobster bisque (that’s broth-y, sauce-y stuff for the less cultured amongst us).

Even beyond the deliciousness was the experience itself. The surroundings are beautiful, the vines have this haunting, enchanted kind of feel when they’re bare in winter and a bright, green happiness in the summer months. South Australia can get a bad rap but the wine regions are incomparable to anywhere else in the world.

Too often when we think about food or drink, we think about it in terms that have nothing to do with enjoyment and everything to do with function.

I grab a coffee on the way to work, to wake me up. I eat a salad at lunch because I haven’t eaten enough greens lately. I have a chocolate bar at 4pm for a much needed sugar hit. I order tequilas shot at the bar to forget about the man who broke my heart. I eat a kebab to aid my body’s recovery from all the tequila shots…

We eat every day. We drink every day.

But how often do we take the time to really enjoy what you consume?  I know I don’t do it enough and despite the ‘creativity’ I brought to my dinner last night – I am determined to do better.

My best dining experience…if you could call it that was out at the Old Gundaroo Pub. There is a quaint little restaurant adjoining the pub. I had the best Caesar salad ever. It was a taste sensation I’ve never experienced before. The chef mixed some awesome flavours into that salad. It was even more than just a basic Caesar salad and sent my taste buds to new heights. I used to go out there just for that Chicken Caesar. Unfortunately The Chef doesn’t work there anymore…but he did end up giving the recipe to me before he left. :) The atmosphere is nice too.

My favourite Australian wine region would have to be Murrumbateman cool wine region. Around 49 wineries operate around this area, with lots of cafes and restaurants to discover. Just outside of Canberra…just awesome if your travelling to Canberra for a wine/holiday experience. Even though it’s just out of Canberra it is so different to the city.

About 3 years ago I had the pleasure of dining at Aria in Sydney just before my Husband sailed to Afghanistan. The food, the wine and the service were divine…and the view was pretty spectacular too.
Just outside Margaret River WA there is a small town called Cowaramup that sells the most beautiful preservative free wine, My fav is the Lantana Rose…preservative free means no hangover…even better!!!

Favourite oz wine region McLaren Vale. Gorgeous reds, cheese etc and just outside Adelaide. Best meal at Daniel, in New York’s Upper East Side, the food and service were phenomenal.

I have eaten many gorgeous meals but my best ever meal was in Queenstown. We were on a 2 hour flight from Sydney at breakfast time that turned into a 10 hour flight due to turbulence and an emergency landing & take off in Christchurch. No food on the plane. We got to Queenstown, bought a burger from the incredible Fergburger and devoured it in the kitchen of our dodgy youth hostel. So. Good.

The best dining experience I ever had was at Philip Johnson’s E’cco restaurant in Brisbane. I was 13. I was eating hot chips with aioli. That might sound really basic and silly, but it was a religious experience. I’d never tasted anything like the aioli at E’cco, still haven’t. It’s ridiculous in its deliciousness. It’s still one of our family’s favourite restaurants for special occasions and the aioli is still insane. We get 3 bowls of it at every meal! In terms of my favourite wine region, I’m a big fan of South Australian wine, funnily enough. There’s nothing like an ice cold Petaluma chardonnay on a summer’s day! My grandfather introduced me to it when I was pretty young and it still rates as my favourite wine.

i have never been to South Australia, but as a Melburnian I love nothing more than a wine tour of the Yarra Valley – especially when it involves 15 girlfriends and a mini bus!

I know nothing about wine but I love the accent people from South Australia have. It sounds a bit posh mixed with a bit new zealand.
Its kind of soft and doesn’t sound like anyone else in Australia. Very distinctive.
And any Savignon Blanc is good by me.

ha ha.. yes when I moved to Melbourne people said I had an accent and I had no idea.. was very funny, strange.

Our old headmaster at school, who was from Sydney, used to complain about it too and said it was because we were more from pioneer stock not convict stock!!! He liked to cause a stir that one..lol

The photo titled ‘South Australia’ is of Magill Estate restaurant at the Penfold’s Winery. It’s in Magill, a suburb of Adelaide – not in a wine region as such like the Barossa or McLaren Vale.

Excellent degustation menu with matching wines – went there for my 30th birthday. But be warned – muchos expensive!! Closed for renovations at the mo, but on the same site that the Penfold’s Grange is made on.

Must agree with Lolly – the Rockford Alicante Bouchet Rose is fab. My absolute favourite – but must be chilled perfectly!

As for my favourite dining experience, nothing beats eating at my Mum’s – she simply is the best cook in the whole wide world. As my Dad says, “why dine out, the best restaurant is at ’80 xxxxxx Road’. I used to think he was joking, but he is spot on.

Oh my goodness – The Loose Box degustation menu matched with wine – hubby and I indulged a couple of years ago and it was devine. Alain Fabregues and his team are absolute masters of cuisine! Love, love, love a good WA Swan Valley shiraz.

I live in the Barossa – Tanunda to be exact.I moved up there 12 months ago and believe it to be one of the most beautiful places in Australia.
The attitude towards food and wine is so wonderful, people honestly believe they go hand in hand and make life better.
If you do win this competition, go to Ferment Asia for a meal. It’s a bit pricy, but one of the most amazing meals (and wine lists) you will ever experience.

My partner and I travel a lot and LOVE fine food!

A few come to mind. My partners all time favorite was in Whistler, Canada @ Araxi Restaurant. Every single course was to die for, we were there with good friends, it was snowing outside and was just magical.

Last week I was lucky enough to eat at Peter Gilmore’s ‘The Quay’ and had that famous snow egg! Being my first time in Sydney the view was also breathtaking for me!

Perugino’s in Perth. Best Italian ever. Go so often they treat us like family. Had my Dad’s 70th there last week and it was perfect and very special!

I feel like such a food snob! but I’m not! I love home made meals with close friends and family, and a decent cheeseburger too!

Wine: being from WA I cant go past a Margaret river red! Love the whites from Marlborough, New Zealand too.

I’ve eaten alot of meals at alot of restaurants. But none spring to mind that would be my ‘best dining experience’. I would say more likely my best dining experiences would be the meals I used to eat when I was younger with my family! The nights when mum made roast chicken and veg and for dessert my favourite – Syrup dumplings!! Or maybe my best dining experience was the first and only dinner party I had for my mates birthday! I made the Maggie Beer chicken and olive pie…..and it turned out perfectly!!! I love eating foods out and trying new things and beautiful meals! But its when I am sitting down with my friends or family at home that come to mind and are the best dining experience for me :)

I’ve had some fabbo food times at Stephanie’s in Melbourne and Maggie Beer’s in Nooriooptoor. However, the meal that comes to mind more often than not is a superb seafood rissotto, 20yrs ago in a tiny town in northern Italy. Simple, creamy, superb.
Most Australian wine regions have merit, but I love the Barrossa for visiting.

THE best dining experience I have ever had was at The Quay Restaurant in Sydney. You dont realise what truly gourmet food made with love is until you have eaten there. Each element, each texture, each flavour was SUPERB! Delicate sizes but bursting with flavour!

My favourite wine region is actually Barossa. You know if you are indulging in a Barossa wine that it reflects the gorgeous and differing environments of the area and climates. It also has a rich history of Vintners which is so apparent with almost all the wines you try. It is perfection in a glass every time.

My best brought meal was at Twin Waters resort at the resurant on the lake, 10years ago. We arrived at the resurant by boat across the lake, had a beautiful salmon & veggies, with a few cocktails. What made it the best was the company, the service & staff :) we were so impressed we nominated staff for employee of the month. The meal though would be my mums potato free spinach & cheese gnocchi :) can & have eaten it for 2 says every meal. & I’ve only ever been to the hunter valley wineries

Road tripping around Europe with my cousin. We heard of a cheese shop in the little country town in Switzerland we were passing through so went off course to investigate…

My best meal I’ve ever had, was after flying back to my hometown. After a 4 hour flight from Darwin to Sydney, then a four hour drive back to my hometown, My boyfriend and I arrived to my mum and dad, my two sisters and my little brother, and a camp oven roast dinner. we were young and hungry. We rocked up at our mate’s place, hoping to have timed it for a casual dinner invite from his very nice parents.
Have you ever heard of the Swedish Lobster Festival? OMG. We’re talking huge garden marqui, 100 people in bizarre lobster hats and lobster bibs, and crayfish cascading from huge lobster fountains. Wine & champagne flowing. It was surreal.
We were quickly given serving jobs, and worked our asses off as lobster waiters, knowing our pay for the night was going to be in the Currency of Crayfish.
That spontaneous lobster dinner was the best ever.

(oh, and fav wine region is Margaret River… some great holidays down there).

The best meal I’ve ever had was at Tetsuya’ s in Sydney. I had wanted to go there for the longest time, so my parents and my best friend’s parents took us for our 25th birthdays (we are only 5 days apart in age). I can’t describe how brilliant the food was. But it was also how fantastic the evening was with my parents, best friend and her parents. Because it was our birthday they even did us a special birthday cake course. It was years ago now, but oh boy I feel like I remember every mouthful.

My best dining experience was at the Weber Grill in Chicago. I had a steak and vegetables, nothing fancy.

But was so bloody exciting about it was that it was the first meal I had eaten in America (had been in New York prior and had the worst food experiences of America there) that tasted like real food and that didn’t give me the runs almost immediately after eating it!

Best meal I had was at The Flower Drum in Melbourne for my 30th birthday. I made everyone get dressed up in black tie get up and we had a brilliant evening. When the Peking Duck came (served in silken pancakes with a slice of cucumber and plum dipping sauce), I took one bite and had to hang onto the table top to make sure I didn’t just swoon away in unconsciousness from pleasure. This weekend we are going to “Appellation” a restaurant in the barossa that is suppose to be amazing, so will let you know!

My best dining experience was actually given to me by the lovely people at Last Minute! I won a trip to Auckland and a part of the prize was an absolutely amazing dinner at Clooney’s. (www.clooney.co.nz)

It was a degustation (I think there were 8 courses – 3 entrees, 3 mains and 2 desserts). It was heaven! My boyfriend, who thinks a steak and a beer equal the best meal ever, loved it to which says a bit. I can’t remember all the courses, but one that stands out was a small steak of sashimi style tuna with a cucumber mouse that was so light it was like a foam…my boyfriend is still raving about the chocolate fondant and the pork that was served in a main… oh and there was a matching wine for each course.

The ambience was amazing, dimly lit, with booth style seating behind those fringe curtain things…it was romantic, sexy and stylish. The waiters knew their stuff and we had the most amazing meal. Definately reccomend for those in Auckland who want an extravagant night out :)
