“It is almost summer and my mind and my mood are starting to think about days at the beach, friends, hot summer nights, fake tan, Vodka Mojito, Grand Cosmopolitan and Pomegranate Martini.  Yes I have begun to obsess about Smirnoff cocktails and summer entertaining – not just lazy bbq’s or long , hot summer lunches but this year I am thinking of bringing the dinner party back, you know just like Justine Timberlake brought sexy back?  But with more cocktails and food and less er, JT.

I love the idea of throwing a dinner party, swanning about in my own home sipping on cocktails knowing that I do not have to drive home.  I also love the fact that Smirnoff have made it so easy by preparing the cocktails for me.

So while Smirnoff Cocktails have made the drinks part of the night a cinch I need help with the rest of the party.  I may not know exactly what to do but like all good hostesses I do know where to go to source the best help – which is why I am here at Mamamia doing just about the best preparation a woman can undertake.

Music choice – do you go soft and background or a bit louder and party like?  I love the idea that I can use an iPod playlist and load and leave for the night but I need to know what to load (so that I can genuinely leave it)

Menu plan – needs to be simple to prepare but delicious to eat.  I know this is asking the impossible but I would like to spend as little time in the kitchen on the night as possible.  If I wasn’t so conscious of the fact that I am inviting people to my house for dinner I would order in take away.

Cocktails – clearly I am going for a Smirnoff Cocktail that I can just whip out of the fridge and pour onto ice, but do I go for the

  • Vodka Mojito A perfectly balanced blend of crisp clean Smirnoff Vodka, Kaffir Lime Liquor and natural mint flavour;
  • Grand Cosmopolitan A professional shake of crisp clean Smirnoff Vodka, Triple Sec Liquor and a splash of Cranberry juice; or the
  • Pomegranate Martini A delicious blend of Smirnoff Vodka, pomegranate juice, Meyer Lemon Flavoured Liqueur, and natural lemon flavour.

Decisions, decisions.  Help! Tell me your perfect dinner party plan.  Send in photos of your best meals or your dinner table set up. tell me about your playlists and tell me which is your favourite Smirnoff Cocktail.

Music: soft and folky. minus the bear, mumford and sons, soft indie music you can talk over and enjoy.
Food: easy entrees; blinis and fritters topped with easy interchangeable toppings, smoked salmon, prosciutto, sour cream, chives, cheese, fish roe. agnolotti with goat’s cheese and pumpkin sauce, cooked beforehand and simply reheated. lots of different desserts, mini lemon meringue tarts, little apple crumbles, brownies.
    Drink: pomegranate martini for sure.

Im a huge fan of both vodka and pomegranate, so my cocktail of choice would be a pomegranite martini with harvey wallbangers or blue lagoons for variety (Im a vodka girl)
For me and my friends it would have to be a laid back bbq in the backyard.
Music: Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club followed by something more upbeat in the evening.
Menu:.Lots of salads, marinated vegetable and tofu kebabs, cous cous. For the meat eaters, prawn skewers and steak.

Cocktails: Moscow Mule was our highlight. Think Vodka, Ginger beer and lime served in large jugs with lots of ice and mint.

Music: Started off with some light jazz before Jackson five got a massive run for some dancing into the wee hours.

Starter: Bruscetta with a mixture of tomatoes (we picked up an amazing variety of tomatoes at the local farmers markets) with fresh bocconcini and home grown basil.
Entree: Fresh ravioli with a sage and burnt butter dressing.
Main: Moroccan lamb cutlets (can pick it up by the bone). Mini boiled potatoes with fresh herbs and sour cream with a side salad (served in little bowls).
Dessert: Mango mousse served in plastic cocktail style glasses.
Afters: The most amazing cheese from Formaggi Ocello in Surry Hills. If you are ever nearby make sure you go to this amazing cheese store.

This party was so much fun and we had so many comments on how amazing the food was. We love the idea of BYO drinks but we always make sure we have a signature cocktail on hand for everyone to enjoy.

Music: a mixture of Leonard Cohen, simon and garfunkle and once a few smirnoffs have been consumed break out the Abba Albums
Food: Pasta a la romana: (pasta with vodka in it)finely chopped onions with 2 cans of toms, allow to simmer for as long as you have got. Boil pasta, drain pasta and return to pot with apx 20 grams of unsalted butter and throw in 1/3 cup of vodka (smirnoff of course). Place pot with pasta, butter and vodka over the heat and stir until vodka has cooked off and butter is taken up by pasta. This takes apx a minute or so. Add 2-s tablespoons of cream to tomatoe sauce and stir. Add pasta to sauce. Serve with a bitter green salad including rocket and dressed very very lightly with olive oil and lemon juice. Have chuncks of fresh bread to mop up the sauce with. Desert: Buy good quality ice cream, melt in a pot good quality choc, cream butter and sugar and stir over heat until sugar cooks a little and sauce is smooth, add a dash of tia maria and serve chilled over the icecream.
This is a very 70′s kind of a meal, so bare table with brightly coloured (gorgeous bright green comes to mind) linen serviettes, big wooden bowl for the salad and rustic looking earthenware bowl for the pasta. A meal you can let your hair down at and wear flares if ya wanna..
Fav cocktail: vodka lemon and tonic, perfect for the warmer months coming up

Ok, I have had a few dinner parties where smirnoff was a feature so this is how a few have gone:
Invite my four besties, chuck a mix of older (80s, 90s, early 00s) fave on the stereo in the background, make a mexican layer dip for entree with a few cosmos to get things started. Next up is tacos or fajitas followed by a chocolate and cherry flan for dessert. We usually mix up a variety of cocktails featuring vodka but I have to say that the pomegranite martini sounds delish and will be getting a run next time!!

Although it’s not a dinner party it was my mum’s 50th over the weekend and we did succeed in making one of the best parties anyone there had ever been to! My brother who has been living in London since March and is not expected back til next December made a surprise visit home and I hide him at my house prior to the party and set up the surprise there. You can check the link below if you want to see the reaction altho everyone that’s watched it so far has cried! Definately made the night for most of the people there and not a party they will forget in a while!!

Sunday afternoon outdoor dinner party (or is that a barbecue?)
Jack Johnson kicking off the playlist
I’d invite about ten friends and kick things off with a mojito
Nibblies would be Doritos (thats how i roll), salsa, guacamole, celery and carrot.
Entree would be prawn skewers that I could get one of the guys to bbq.
Main would be steaks. With couscous salad, garden salad, pumpkin and feta salad. Bread rolls of course, tomato sauce…and I would probably have to do some snags…
    Dessert: Chocolate Pavlova!!
By now things would be hopefully getting fun and the music might become some 90s revival…backstreets back ALL RIGHT.

I am obsessed with mojitos. Favourite cocktail by far!!

Music : I do an ipod playlist on the computer – and lock the screen saver with a password. That way people can’t keep changing songs… (My boy thinks he’s a DJ and constantly changes my music!) I’d have some laid back stuff – Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone for eating times… and let it get more boisterous as the night wears on – Love shack (gotta get people dancing), brown eyed girl etc etc.

Menu – Starters – I always have dips out for when people arrive. Usually cob dip straight from the oven, with crudites for the health concious.

    – Tapas for entree – Risotto balls, Olives, Chorizo, grilled eggplant, artichokes, feta, haloumi, and crispy bread

    – Main would be cooked on the BBQ – Morrocan chicken skewers with lemon garlic yoghurt and cous cous. Grilled vegies with the morrocan spices for the vego’s

    – Desert would be Watermelon Granita.

Drinks – My favourite cocktail is made up – I call it a sunset.
It has Vodka, fresh pineapple, passionfruit & mango, and a splash of grenadine. All blended up in a blender with ice. Very refreshing.

Sure!!!! It’s super easy to make… All you have to do is blend watermelon, add sugar to taste (I usually add some lime juice for a bit of acidity, or other fruit like kiwi fruit).Sieve mixture and put into the freezer in shallow containers for about 8hrs, scraping with a fork every 3-4 hrs.
        Done.
Vodka goes good with granita too btw.

Picture this: A balmy warm summer Friday night in Melbourne.

I’m standing on the balcony of my newly-purchased apartment, enjoying the fact that it’s summer and the work week is over and it’s time to unwind. While I get everything ready I get the stereo going to the tunes of Cat Empire, Missy Higgins, Jamie Lidell, Elana Stone… the list goes on. As long as it’s cruisy but got a beat, you’ll hear it tonight.

A bunch of specially chosen friends arrive to be given Smirnoff Vodka Mojitos on the balcony, served with crushed ice and fresh lime. They take their seats around the table, lit with tealight candles (and citronella ones too, because we are in Australia after all).

After a selection of antipasto, dips and warm toasted bread for entree, we move on to a paella, choc-full of Spanish seafood goodness to satisfy everyone’s hunger.

The drinks move on to the Pomegranate Martinis, the conversation gets a little more animated, and the music switches to soul. Classic soul. I’m talking James Brown and all his funky friends.

Dessert is homemade icecreams – a deliciously rich chocolate, and a delightfully light lemon, because it’s hot and you need something refreshing to go with the drinks.

Drinks: pre-dinner cocktails – definitely the Smirnoff Pomegranate Martini – nothing says Spring like pomegranate! This is delicious. Serve with crushed ice (or normal ice if too hard to crush) and real pomegranate segments – so sweet and juicy – and a lemon wedge. I prefer this in a tall glass with a straw instead of a traditional martini glass – much harder to spill! A pinot gris with the entrée, a shiraz or cabernet sauvignon with the main, followed by more cocktails.

Entrée: Chilli-garlic prawns with meditteranean salad. Pick up some super fresh green prawns in the morning, thread them onto a skewer (3 per skewer) and marinate in a mixture of garlic, fresh red chilli, lemon juice, and olive oil. Barbeque. Serve with a salad of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, spanish onion, bocconcini, and flat leaf parsley with a little vinaigrette dressing.

Main: slow-roasted lamb shoulder with a pea and mint risotto. Depending on how many people, more than one shoulder may be needed but it doesn’t matter as there’s nothing else that needs to be cooked in the oven (~6 hours is ideal). Lamb with mint sauce is one of my favourite flavours from when I was a kid, but the fresh mint in the risotto is much more subtle and complements the falling-apart richness of the lamb so so beautifully.

Dessert: chocolate fondue with pieces of fruit (banana, mandarin, grapes, and of course strawberries), marshmallows, and maltesers (yes, you can dip chocolate in chocolate and it’s amazing!) This is a really fun dessert, is easy peasy to prepare, and it brings the table back together if people have split up into separate conversations.

The best thing about this menu is that pretty much everything can be prepared earlier except the risotto. Get your husband/partner/boyfriend/another person to barbeque the prawns and everything else is already done!

Music: shouldn’t be overpowering – this means volume and style/genre – i.e. if I hear Lady Gaga I for one am going to exit the conversation and start singing/dancing in my seat so save it for after dinner! Chilled out/groovy kind of stuff is the way….think Norah Jones, Buena Vista Social Club, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Sparro (his less dancey tunes). After dinner – anything goes!

Décor: classic and classy. This is the time to bring out all ‘the good stuff’ which never gets used because it’s ‘the good stuff’- the good china, the good cutlery, the good glasses/crystal. White linen. Not bunches of flowers but floating flowers on the table, like lotus flowers. This way they don’t get in the way but you still get to enjoy the beauty.

And of course, a party dress! Preferably a wrap dress or 50s style A-line dress in a cute print….with heels… Ahhhh I really want to throw this dinner party now!

This is how I’d do it. You may not want to come, but my friends do, so that’s OK.
Music: Lots of Neil Young & my husband playing guitar.
Food: entree would be some big antipasto plates put together before anyone arrived. My husband would take care of the mains as he used to be a chef. He loves a buffet so there would be lots of different things people can pick and choose from. Lots of seafood, salads, and probably some meat for the carnivores. We usually don’t go to much for desserts, but I’m quite partial to banoffi pie so I could buy one. Do you get the idea that I’m pretty low key with the old dinner parties?

Cocktail: We are vodka mojito people, so there would be lots of that for us all to chill out with.

Other than that, it’s lots of fairy lights and my husband’s moroccan lanterns, the guitar comes out later in the night and when we think we can’t eat any more we bring out a cheese platter.

Our favourite dinner party is at Christmas time – our front patio and the front of our house is well lit up with hundreds of lights – snow flakes, santas, nativity scenes, giant christmas trees, lit up angels, snowmen. There are fake fireplaces, fake fog and this year we have laser lights (all thanks to my husband who just loves Christmas). We have many parties – everyone is welcomed with a coctail usually based on champagne and we all sit around a big table and enjoy a lovely meal (and usually a dessert full of alcohol) and the kids just love it when the lights are turned on. We just can’t wait until September.

Food – Rice paper rolls, duck pancakes, stuffed mushrooms, chicken lemon grass skewers and chilli prawns.

Look – Miami beach, bright crisp colours, lush green plants, candle light and comfy chairs to sink into.

To start the night off, drinks on arrival. I’d normally make vodka, lime and sodas – two lime quarters per glass with some fresh mint and a little brown sugar, crushed together til the sugar looks syrupy, a shot of vodka topped with soda water and ice. For the sake of ease though, Vodka Mojito as starter drinks.

Our music is stored on the computer which plays through the TV system, so music is always a selection of albums added to a queue and playing on shuffle. Most favoured to be in the list throughout dinner would typically be Damien Rice, Cat Stevens, Ross Ryan, Bob Dylan, Beatles, Donovan. After dinner maybe things like Cat Empire, Mika.

I love a sample plate for entree. On a platter we serve toasted Turkish rolls, cut into chunks, with a mix of olives, a couple of cheeses, tapenade (my favourite is a green one with parmesan and I think basil in it, near the olives on supermarket shelves), a couple of dips – probably a hummus and a spicy capsicum one, again bought pre-made for ease, some fruit – grapes, strawberries, pear or apple slices work well, and maybe a little meat such as shaved ham or salami. Cosmos to drink would set this off nicely.

Main would be roast lamb. It starts cooking well in advance of when guests arrive so most of the work will already be done, especially if you have a slow cooker and can just turn it on in the morning. Serve with a red wine jus, crispy baked potatoes and a mix of salads – a big garden salad, some tabouli, a Moroccan salad from the deli. Alternatively, cook the lamb the day before and serve a lamb salad. Dress a mix of salad leaves with a balsamic dressing, then layer on top cherry tomatoes, cucumber pieces, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, roast capsicum and eggplant strips, olives and the cold roast lamb and sprinkle feta over the top. Serve with crusty bread. To drink, make the Pomegranate Martini sparkle by topping with either soda water or some bubbly.

Dessert – can’t go past my chocolate brownie and raspberry baked cheesecake. Rich chocolate brownie base, cheesecake and raspberries on top. Made the day before, served very cold – it’s heaven on a plate. Only problem is it tends to be a conversation stopper for the duration of dessert – everyone is too busy eating. Keep the sparkles coming with dessert – either with the sparkling Martinis or just some bubbly.

Sure. I pulled it from a magazine a few years ago, but I think it’s also on Taste.com.

        For the brownie:
200g butter; 150g castor sugar; 35g cocoa; 2 eggs, beaten; 90g plain flour, sifted.

        For the cheesecake:
375g cream cheese (room temp); 100g castor sugar; 1 tsp vanilla essence; 2 eggs, beaten; 170g frozen raspberries.

Preheat oven to 170C. Line a 23cm x 23cm brownie pan with baking paper (I use a lasagne dish).

To make the brownie, melt butter in a saucepan, remove from heat and add sugar and cocoa. Stir well. Whisk in beaten eggs, then fold through sifted flour. Pour into prepared pan.

For the cheesecake, beat cream cheese, castor sugar and vanilla with a mixer until smooth. Slowly add beaten eggs, mixing well in between. Gently pour cheesecake mixture on top of brownie mixture in pan. For a marbled effect, using a fork, drag small amounts of brownie through the cheesecake. Scatter raspberries on top and bake for 40-50 mins. Remove from oven and allow to cool before cutting.

*The recipe states to allow to cool, but the first time I made this we found out the next day that it was a hundred times better after being refrigerated, so make it far enough in advance to chill well in fridge before serving.*

THE ABC TO PERFECT DINNER PARTIES:

A: invites. Make sure you invite a combination of people who know each other and get along, as well as the unexpected randoms. That way, it can create for interesting conversations down the track and some possible Cupid-action ;)

B: music. And I disagree that you should pre-plan the music list. Instead, I would ask each guest to bring a favourite cd to share with the party. It makes for interesting conversation when you see that “workmate Bob” is into Metallica (who would’ve thunk?) and he can therefore bond with “highschool Jen”, who has a penchant for Placebo. Bonding is good. See point A.

C: food. What dinner party would be complete without it? I’d suggest that the main should be easy to eat (without being messy) and involve some form of carvery. For example, lasagne, meat, whole fish etc. All provoke “oohs” and “aahs” when displayed. But for the other courses, definitely things you can hold in your hands. Cupcakes for dessert, cocktails (with Smirnoff, baby!) and oysters.

    Delicious.

I would so love to win this prize!

On the “ABC” note, I met a girl the other day who was called “ABCDE” (pronounced “abseedee”). How very odd!

I love a great summer dinner party!! hot nights, beach hair, refreshing beverages!

so to set the mood I would recommend an Ibiza chill out session (ministry of sound have CD packs of ‘chill out’) or if you have a dj friend who would be willing to make it extra special for a few hours get them to play some coastal chilled beats- there is nothing more summery!!

Personally I would have a selection of all 3 cocktails, each person has different tastes and there’s nothing better than being catered to your likes! But otherwsie stick with the Mojito, it is refreshing and crisp- exactly what a hot summer night needs!

    for dinner I would make:

entree: succulent seared scallops with parsley, lemon juice and watercress salad (super easy , super quick and super delicious!!)

main: grilled (or BBQ’d) salmon with salsa verde

sides: asparagus with lemon and pinenuts
    Heirloom tomato salad with boconccini

desert: trio of granita- mint, lemon and pomegranate

This is my never fail go to for summer parties! you can pretty much make everything ahead except for the fish and scallops.

HAVE FUN! even if you stuff something up, no one cares as long as you’re all having fun on a hot summer night. people will remember the fun!

My favourite thing is to theme the night – music, food drinks, everything! It also creates a great conversation starter, especially if you ask your friends to bring something to contribute (food or music or wear a costume)

It also cuts down the selection on what do to make and listen to!
So… I would suggest the Mojito and go with a mexican theme.
Make tacos and burritos and you can do almost all the preparation before your guests arrive (preparing the salad fillings and meat) so you’re not in the kitchen all night.
