Welcome to my new desk.
The best part of any new job is finding out where you sit. Desks matter on so many levels, but not least of all because you’ll probably end up spending more time at your desk than just about anywhere else.
As desks go, mine is pretty special; a waist-high fifteen-foot-long bench complete with inset spittoons (fancy places to spit!) all finished in laboratory-grade white Laminex and saturated in artificial light.
Your cup of tea? Probably not. Yet to me – for the above-mentioned reasons and then some – it’s the best kind of desk I could imagine.
Tasting wine is a huge part of what I do.
In a good week I’ll spend anywhere up to fifteen hours standing at my “desk” pulling corks out of bottles, twisting off screw caps, sniffing, swirling, and slurping my way through the hundreds of weekly samples we receive at Coles Liquor HQ. Trust me when I tell you that it’s harder than it sounds!
On any given day I’ll taste upwards of 50 wines – these are grouped by variety or style, each is concealed in a bag eliminating any risk of label bias, and all are scored using the International 20 point scale; a possible 3 points are allocated for colour, 7 points for aroma, & 10 points for taste.
Helping me do all of this is one of the most talented group of wine buyers in the country. It may not sound like fun, but it’s a process that ensures that only the highest quality wines make it through, and even then we’re talking 20% of what we taste.
The hardest part of all this is being consistent. And as great as it sounds, tasting 50-or-so wines in a sitting is both a physically and mentally taxing exercise and it’s imperative that you give the last wine you taste the same level of attention as the first.
And then there’s the physical effects; the sore gums, the wine stained teeth, and the tendency to fall asleep on public transport, and the desperate need for cold beer when it’s all said and done.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I realise I have a good job – a great job in fact – a great job made all the better by a pretty special desk.
Here are three great wines I’ve tried at it recently.
DAL ZOTTO ‘PUCINO’ PROSECCO NV
King Valley, Victoria
RRP$20
Dal Zotto have forged a solid reputation as producers some of Australia’s most quality-driven Italian Varietals. From their three Prosseco offerings, the entry level ‘Pucino’ oozes smells of lemon sherbet, green apple and pear, while the palate is clean, citrus-lead & balanced beautifully by a charge of tiny bubbles. A steal for around $20 a bottle.
RAPAURA SPRINGS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2012
Marlborough, New Zealand
RRP$16
Fresh as a daisy, this is Marlborough Sauvignon at its best. Expect a complex and layered nose of pea pod, green herb, grapefruit and mint, while in your mouth it delivers plenty of intense and mouth-filling fruit tropical fruit, before ending clean, crisp and dry. Grab it while you can.
DE BORTOLI WINDY PEAK ‘HEATHCOTE’ SHIRAZ 2012
Heathcote, Victoria
RRP $15
De Bortoli have a knack for turning out brilliant wines that well and truly over-deliver on price. The latest addition to the much loved Windy Peak range is the jaw dropping HEATHCOTE Shiraz 2012 – a cool, dark, and fragrant wine boasting a level of detail rarely seen at this price. A serous contender for bargain of the year.

HI MM Team; just wondering when the draw for Matt’s book will be held? Thanks.

Thank you! Saved to my phone!

Added to the Xmas list, thanks!

Tried the de bortoli last night. #winning

Both are sparkling whites – Champagne is from that region in France and Prosecco is Italian. Similar but not the same.

A weekly post from Matt would be fantastic!
My husband and I love wine and we are currently building a large cellar to house our ever growing collection.
I always shop at First Choice on Unley Rd, and have always found Matt’s tips to be helpful, informative and spot on! Great to see also that you do not have to spend a fortune to purchase a great wine either. One of my favourite whites is Squealing Pig Sav Blanc, has anyone else tried this, it is fabulous and under $20 a bottle too (+:

Just wrote those down in my phone because I’m having a dinner party this weekend and was wondering what to serve. that’s me sorted then. Thanks Matt.

I always choose the wine on the list that’s bang in the middle of expensive and cheap.

My dad always said there are only 2 words you need to know when it comes to wine tasting, ‘Yum’ and ‘Yuck’ and it’s TRUE LOL

I get anxious buying cheap wine – so I always spend over $20 a bottle as if that’s some kind of guarantee. Clearly it isn’t!!!! Thanks for the tips Matt.

I love wine more than anything – but I don’t get the whole wine and cheese thing. It always makes both taste eggy to me. Maybe I’m buying the wrong wine? Or the wrong cheese? Anyone know if there’s a good rule-of-thumb?

Takes time to develop a palate …. Keep tasting wines made from different grape varieties & regions …don’ t buy always the same kind , If you want to learn . ..The time of the day and the state of your mind &body always a big factor with wine. One of my most unexpected & greatest experience was a rose at a summer lunch by a lake …

Welcome Matt! It’s great to see you posting on Mamamia

I never drink red wine because I don’t want to stain my teeth. But the white wine looks good. Have written it down for the weekend.

Dumb question: is prosecco the same as champagne?
loading...
Nope they’re not – Not a dumb question if you’re new to wine Melbourne GIrl!
Prosecco – Italy
Champagne – The specific place in France

Mamamia can we have more Matt please? A regular weekly post about wine would be really popular I think. Cheers.

I’m always so intimidated by bottle shops because I never know what to buy. THis is awesome. I’m going to bookmark it on my phone as a reference!

I don’t know if here is the right place to say this but I just wanted to say to Mamamia that this to me is such a great sponsored post because it gives me information that I can use. I don’t care that it’s sponsored because it doesn’t feel like an ad.
And Matt you are very cute.

At the end of the day Matt, when the rest of us unwind with a glass of wine, do you have, like, a glass or milk or a cup of tea?

I’ve always wondered that about wine tasters.

I know a wine merchant. I think he’s an alcoholic and he is also a bit of a wanker when it comes to “the grapes have been stomped on by priests in nepal who have never touched dirt and then stored in solid gold casts for 20 years and it was $400 for the bottle” stuff. Can’t stand it.

Love this! Thanks Matt for making me feel less like an idiot when I’m buying wine. Really helpful.

Great post by Matt. Would love to see him more regularly on here chatting about wine! I look forward to purchasing some of his picks!

I bought the prosecco last night after reading this to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday. Delicious.

Now this is one post which I hope becomes a regular particularly when purchasing drinks over the festive season.

Matt – That Del Zotto prosecco is pretty much my fav summer drink. I’m from around the King Valley but live in Sydney now… It’s about $26 dollars here! It’s really worth buying through their website if you live outside of Victoria. It’s about $18 there. Bargain!

My favourite wine is dessert wine. I do like red, but it can’t be too strong. My SO on the other hand loves a strong red. My recommendation for a nice, sweet dessert wine is Brown Brothers Moscato.
loading...
Try a Spanish sherry next time. I guarantee you’ll love it.
loading...
I pick the ones with the stickers on them.
100% success rate so far.

I thought I was the only one who chose wines by the labels that look the prettiest. Phew. The De Bortoli one fits the bill. I would have chosen that based on the leaves.
loading...
Is this going to be a regular post by Matt? I hope so – it would be a welcome addition to mamamia.
loading...
Yes please. I made a new years resolution to learn more about wine this year and oh dear it’s almost december and this is the first thing I’ve learned so far….

My tip for summer is Pinot Grigio. I go to a great vineyard in NSW’s Hunter Valley called Tallavera Grove and it’s always about a year ahead of the trends – it was doing Sauvignon Blanc when the house wine of choice was still the Chardonnay!
Will be interested to try the De Bortoli suggestion – I’m not a massive fan after a few visits to the cellar door a few years ago – so I may take the opportunity to try them again!!

Hey Matt, have recently seen some of your wine recommendations in the catalogue. I am interested to know if your recommendation for the 2012 windy peak Shiraz is for drinking now or holding onto for a few years? Over the winter I was really into the 2010 windy peak Pinot noir, excellent value for the quality of wine. Please keep up the good work of recommending great wines under $15 bottle. Now I have a kid and only work part time I can’t afford the pricier wines I used to buy, except on holidays!

This is great idea – off to source that Windy Peak Heathcote shiraz.
loading...
Now THIS is a sponsored post I was very keen to read!
Always looking for a good Shiraz, will give the Heathcote a try once I finish my stash of the delish Red Knot.

Great to see some reasonably priced wines!
Just poured myself a Penfold’s Koonanga Hill 2011 Cab Merlot which is really good on its own, but not such a good pairing with the Sara Lee Rocky Road Ice Cream…
loading...
Ice cream at 5pm? That’s decadent!
loading...
You’ll just have to trust me on it, but I really, really deserved it after my week!
loading...
Thanks Matt, but I’ll be buying them from Dan Murphy’s.

Very exciting to see a great suggestion for a good Pinot under $20!! Thanks Matt. By the way totally agree witht the recommendation of Coldstream Hills Chardonnay – mmmmm …
