I’m a recent coffee convert. It’s awkward, because now I’m not allowed to make fun of ‘coffee people’.
I used to scoff at packs of gents in Lycra sipping espressos after their Sunday morning ride on $10,000 bikes. And I’d snigger as I waited to pay for my bottle of juice while someone’s skinny double shot latte was lovingly crafted.
For a long time, I didn’t get it. Then something happened, kids maybe, and I needed something to punctuate the day. Also, people seemed to get together ‘for coffee’. I was lonely, so I sometimes joined them. No one makes plans to talk over juice, do they? I liked the coffee, I loved the catch-ups and I was hooked.
Now I have a coffee ritual – I love it, but it means I can’t take the mickey out of others. My ritual goes like this:
After I make breakfast, pack lunches, shout a bit, look for a swimming cap, take a teddy off the dog, rummage for clean socks and shout a bit more, I drop three kids at two schools. My route takes me past a number of cafes. My favourite, naturally, is the first one I pass, but parking is iffy and there’s sometimes a woman in front of me in the queue who I find overly chatty BC (before coffee).
If there’s a parking space and I can’t spy Chatty-Woman, I’m in there.
I take my skinny capp and go. Either to my desk at home, or to the office. Either way, not a word gets written until the cup (regular size) is empty. Then the workday begins.
One bought coffee a day is plenty for me. It’s been a conscious decision to NOT have a coffee machine at home. Some of my friends have them and when they entertain it’s like they become baristas themselves – slaves to their friends’ coffee habits.
Once I’m at work, to leave would be disastrous. Just as that first coffee says ‘start,’ going out again would say, ‘stop.’
So coffee is happening more frequently at home. That’s why I tried the NESCAFE Café Menu (actually, just the Cappuccino – I’m a purist but there are 12 other flavours available). Also, I was writing this post. But I didn’t get a freebie – I bought a box myself with my very own money. And it was great – rich with flavour and with a creamy froth.
And the best bit? No parking, no waiting and no Chatty-Woman dilemma. Just coffee and conversation – with people I like.
Congratulations to the thousands that received your free NESCAFE Cafe Menu sample. Unfortunately we are all out of samples (you guys sure do love your coffee!) – but feel free to pop into your local supermarket to buy some to try at home.
What’s your relationship with coffee?

The only nescafe I would consider drinking is their fairtrade certified one. When I have a cup of coffee, I want to know that the people who made it were paid fairly, had fair working conditions, and that no child slave labour was used. However nescafe’s only fairtrade certified coffee (as far as I’m aware) is an instant one that, personally, I don’t think tastes very nice. I prefer the wide range of delicious and ethical fairtrade coffees I can get from my supermarket, and a wide range of cafes, online businesses, and oxfam. http://www.fairtrade.org.au for more info – how fair is your coffee? BTW I’m 25 and I’m addicted to coffee, and I’m not employed by anyone to say the above

I love coffee, but only real coffee. I’ll only drink proper strong coffee made by a barrista who knows what they’re doing.
Real coffee connoisseurs (like the Italians for example) wouldn’t go near freeze-dried instant crap with a ten foot pole. It’s funny when people say “I love coffee” but then only drink instant or Gloria Jean’s or Starbucks.
Take my advice and give instant a miss, if you haven’t tried real coffee you don’t know what you’re missing. Leave instant to office workers (to go with the Arnotts Assorted Family Favourites), parent teacher nights and roadside stop and revive centres.
Show a bit of class and style and go for real!

Well *I* only drink coffee that’s been farted out the backside of an ancient Peruvian caffeine monkey and hand picked by a travelling band of selfless monks before being engraved with my own initials.
So there.

Mmmm, coffee.
However my most hated phrase stems from coffee, the ‘soy-latter drinking lefty’ derogatory remark made to people.
Well, regular milk makes me break out, so what do you suggest I drink? Ha ha, it’s such a weird thing to mock.

Great, thanks!

Love this. I’m already a convert to this coffee and even take sachets everywhere with me – to meetings, to friends places (copiously and tactfully explaining how I can’t have any other form of coffee- thankfully so far no-one offended!), keep an emergency sachet in my handbag, stock up when the boxes of 20 are on special, and offer it to visitors who are quite delighted! 1st is Mocha, 2nd is Latte, 3rd Caramel so I cross fingers and wonder if I’ll get to try another flavour!

Free coffee. Two of my favourite words in the world.

I love my coffee in what ever form I can get it. I don’t need lots of it only 1 or 2 a day.Though getting out to a coffee shop is a luxury I enjoy so much more now.
I used to like being the first one up in the morning and making a coffee before the kids got up. Now days (with a 6mth old who likes to wake overnight) I just like to be able to take a sip before I get bombarded with breakfast requests.

my first coffee experience was Starbucks at 16. Horrible horrible stuff but it triggered my love for coffee. And given im a Melbourne girl i would be rejected by society if i did not catch onto this coffee culture sooner or later. It definitely aided my learning and memory for exams and without it i became irritable! I drink instant with soy milk and its divine! also a chai latte does it for me lately also

I don’t drink coffee when I’m pregnant or breastfeeding. IN the process of weaning so I can get back onto it. Not weaning because of coffee, just because my little girl is almost 1! lol! I just need two cups a day. Nothing fancy. But I’m hanging out.

It’s become such an embarrassing thing to say you prefer instant coffee. There are so many coffee snobs around! I’ve been a Nescafe girl since I was a teenager.

I want to try this. I am one of those rare people that actually prefer instant coffee to coffee shop coffee.

Me too! I like my coffee to taste like coffee not all fancy with flavourings and cfrothed milk. Give me a spoon of coffee, some hot water, cold milk and two sugars anyday

Got into coffee late in life (mid 30′s) and to be honest I don’t love it but I do love the chance to drink powdered chocolate on milk while not coming across as a toddler

I am also new to this coffee world and I’m 25!
Like Kate I always felt I was missing out on something when friends and colleagues went out to grab a quick coffee-so I started on the mocha, in a weird way it makes me feel less guilty as I’m not having a ‘full’ coffee!
In saying that I do love it but just limit myself to one a day and being the new ‘coffee snob’ that I am- I have only ever bought from a cafe, instant just doesn’t feel as special!!

I just like the “shout a bit” then “shout a bit more”. Sounds exactly like my morning getting two boys ready for childcare. Coffee comes way down the list of things to have in the morning.
We have a coffee machine at home, but it is only ever turned on during the weekend or when I am fortunate enough to be home alone….

Love your coffee habit.
I buy 1 coffee a day on the way to the bus stop but I *need* one before I leave the house, so I do a bit out a Dolly Parton.
I Stumble out of bed and tumble to the kitch, pour myself a cup of ambition etc etc from my basic but reliable coffee pot that goes on my stove, just chuck some grounds in, turn on the heat and by the time I’m out of the shower I can smell the delicious pick me up wafting through the house.
Can’t wait to give this Nescafe a go.
