We all wish we could be a bit more like Nigella Lawson right? The woman is amazing, she can bake a mouth-watering berry tart with one hand, while roasting any animal you can think of to delicious perfection with the other. On top of that, she’s got a girl-crush-worthy voice and somehow manages to make sifting flour erotic.
Well, food blogger Lorraine Elliott (AKA Not Quite Nigella) is a little more like her than the rest of us. And for the next few weeks she will be sharing some mouth-watering morsels of information guaranteed to transform the entire Mamamia readership into culinary superstars. Or at the very least, she’ll give us some alternatives to microwave popcorn for dinner.
Lorraine writes:
There are currently thousands of food blogs in the world. Mine is just one of the many that pepper the internet proffering recipes and reviews for hungry readers. Yet there I was, wearing gold coloured thongs and inappropriately casual dress. I was at the airport, carrying my luggage and looking at the airline ticket with my name on it. I wondered silently to myself, “How on earth did I land this gig?”
I looked at my fellow travelers. Two were from the two biggest newspapers in Sydney and probably purchased travel insurance by yearly policy. Vogue Magazine is joining us for the second leg. And me? Well I feel like the troubled teen sitting at the table with the adults.
“So… where does everyone work?” G from the Sydney Morning Herald asks.
“I’m a travel writer at the Daily Telegraph,” M says.
“I’m here as a last minute replacement for when the writer couldn’t make it,” A from a magazine says.
G explains that he is actually an investigative journalist and they’ve given him this assignment as a reward.
“What about you?” they ask.
“I have a food blog,” I say in between bites of delicate smoked salmon morsels mumbling my words and hiding them in the chewing of my food.
They all look at me curiously. I’m sure some of them are thinking “Whaaaaat? A blog? Why on earth are you here?” which of course is the reaction I am used to getting. They are too polite to say it out loud of course.
Yes I’m a food blogger. What does this entail, Dear Reader? Well, I photograph and write about the food in restaurants. At home I cook, style, photograph and write about the food that I make. I also think of stories to write, things to cook, places to eat and people to interview. One day I may bake a St Honore pastry: a choux pastry filled with a delicious rose scented cream where each choux is dipped in a sweet rose icing and then decorated with swirls of whipped cream and topped with a gold disc.
Not everything is a success however. One day I could be shaking my head at the “hot milk sponge” disaster where a yawning crater sat where a sponge should have risen. The texture was more like a biscuit than a cake and we hacked at this strange mutant of a cake with solid 10 cm high sides and a thin biscuit bottom. It was by all accounts an absolute disaster and ended in the embarrassing dumping of the “body” in the bin late at night.
But never in my right mind did I ever believe that food blogging would be how I would make a living. It started off as a way to relieve boredom in a corporate world where I thought that I would exist for another 30 years although the idea of it filled me with dread. I needed a creative outlet, one that would help balance a life of numbers and found solace through blogging, through writing to the world outside.
The first post was the hardest, I think it took days to come up with something to write about. After all, who was I? I wasn’t anyone particularly interesting or was I living a celibate lifestyle. I wasn’t a trained chef, merely a home cook that had come to cooking later in life. Who really cared what I thought about anything?
But somehow, with patience, persistence and a dash of madness, almost five years later, it did become possible to turn around a black and white life to one that glowed in technicolour.

I’d have to say that NQN is my favourite blog to follow. It is always informative, motivational and seasoned with humour. The recipes are easy to follow, the pictures are fantastic and the restaurant and travel reviews make me want to go! Keep ‘em coming Lorraine!!!c

Aww gosh Corrie, thank you so much for your sweet and kind words! Readers like you are what really make blogging such a pleasure
Thank you!!

I found NQN when looking for recipe for Portuguese egg tart. I decided to follow NQN’s recipe and I have to say that the next time I need to bake something I always look up the recipes at NQN first before turning to other recipes (including my mom’s)!! NQN’s recipe is easy to follow, easy to understand, and I really really enjoy reading the blog. Nowadays, I start reading the blog from the beginning… Keep on the great and fabulous work, Lorraine.. your blog is one that I always waiting for every day!!

Hi Patricia! I’m so glad that you like that recipe, it’s one of my favourites too
And thank you for your kind words regarding the recipes and reading the blog. I’m so delighted!

Reading your blog to me is a daily ritual, much like checking the weather on my iphone or reading the newspaper and I can’t sleep if I haven’t had my daily fix. I’m constantly awed by how much material you can put out yet keeping the quality of the writing and I love the side bar with all the drop down menus. Thanks for doing all you do Lorraine.

Hi Tiffany! I’m so heartened to hear that
I really wanted it to be a daily blog so that I could write to each of you every single day. Thank you so much for reading my daily ramblings Tiffany!

I love Lorraine’s blog and read every single post. I would love, love, love to review food and beautiful places for a living – but I can’t cook, can’t take photos, and don’t write as beautifully either. So I’m more than happy to indulge my fantasies by reading Not Quite Nigella
One can dream, yes?

Hi Fiona! Thank you so much for reading, I’m so chuffed
You know what’s funny is that my family still sees me as the person who would send them blurry photos from overseas!
And yes nothing wrong with dreaming at all!

In the 2nd last paragraph – Celibate lifestyle? Or maybe celebrity lifestyle?
loading...
Hi Curious-Hehe I originally had celebutante but perhaps spellcheck did its thing. Now a celibate lifestyle blog might have legs!

Have been counting on my fingers and toes: OMG, I have made a nuisance of myself on Lorraine’s column since about November 2010!! Not knowing anything about food blogging, I entered a competition through some Comps page and found the post! [Won the prize offered too, if I remember correctly
! ] Well, I do not think I have missed one single blog, even those about cakes I don’t personally eat!! And learning about other food blogs, mostly from Lorraine’s site, I now have a wonderful almost daily circle of 35-40 around the world I follow. After I have read Lorraine’s, of course!!
loading...
Eha, you never bother at all! I love reading your comments and I’m so glad that you’ve discovered other blogs!
loading...
Hi Eha,
I love NQN too and it has given me a taste for reading blogs, but I haven’t found any others that are half as good. Which other of the 35-40 from around the world that you follow would you recommend?
loading...
Dear Megadrama: obviously I love all the ones I follow – time is of essence in this household
! And Lorraine writes SO well and has such a varied content, indeed she is hard to ‘beat’! But to get a global experience, why not travel to Mexico and read ‘Flavors of the Sun’; enjoy Israel in ‘Food Bridge’; love Nami and her Japanese inspired cooking in ‘Just one Cookbook’; enjoy the elegance of ‘Dinners & Dreams’; be with a lovely family in ‘Family Spice’; do things Indian with the very popular ‘Sunshine & Smile’; learn fascinating info from ‘Silk Road Gourmet’ and admire tthe wonderful photos of ‘Spicie Foodie’! You may know them all already, but I think, without liking nor loving anyone else less, this makes a fairly rounded list
!
loading...
Hi Eha,
Thanks for the heads up, some of those sound brilliant. Will check them out. Some to the spicy ones sound very tempting.
loading...
Hi Megadrama! Thank you for your very kind words
There are some blogs on my blogroll too and I really enjoy visiting those
And great list below from Eha too
Happy blog reading!

When I first found Lorraine’s blog I commented every day and felt like I was a stalker. I love her blog. I’ve learned heaps from her and my blog is better for it.

Maureen, you are one of the most generous bloggers out there! I feel like we already know each other so well!

I was a bit late to discover NQN but when I did, I couldn’t believe how long I’d been missing out! I have read every single one of NQN’s posts since May 2011 .There’s always a post I haven’t read though but that’s one thing I love about NQN, they’re so much fun to read, even though I’ve never met her (fingers crossed someday!) she writes so engagingly it feels like she’s a friend I’ve known for years I even find myself re-reading my favourite posts, like the one about Mado Cafe, potato lefse, bacon jam, better-than-sex brownies, just too many to name, and her photos are foodgasm
Thank you Lorraine for inspiring so many foodies out there including myself, keep doing what you do!

You may find it a little rude, but there is a hilarious blog that pokes fun at food blog fails.
Those who proudly upload their food pictures to facebook/twitter…but probably shouldn’t.

NQN is one of my favorite blogs–full of charm, self-deprecation, wit, creativity, and with lovely photos. It never disappoints. Lorraine has earned her special place in the food world through hard work and dedication to her craft. It is no wonder she is so popular.

Welcome Lorraine, I love NQN! I love your creativity (particularly your Halloween and cupcake posts) and your reviews have caused me to divert to suburbs when visiting Sydney due to your recommendations/comments alone. And my daughters still rave about the rainbow cake I cooked for my daughter’s 6th birthday. Thanks for your lovely blog!
loading...
Hi Ecidnac! Thank you
They’re two of my favourite kinds of posts. If only there was Halloween on more than once a year!
I’m so glad that they loved the rainbow cake too. You’re very welcome!

Hi Lorraine, great to see you on Mamamia! As a former news journo occasionally treated to travel junkets, I would have welcomed a prominent blogger like yourself among the group. Now that I have my own blog, I appreciate the amount of work (ideas, writing, cooking, recipes and don’t get me started on photography and styling) that goes into each post. It’s a lot more work and much more of a complete publishing process than writing a simple review or travel piece. Your success has been hard earned and you deserve it. Enjoy the perks!
loading...
Hi Larissa! Thank you and thank you for understanding
There’s nothing quite like blogging is there? It’s so rewarding but it is hard work too which makes it even more rewarding in the end
Thank you!

Not Quite Nigella…. One of the original and best food blogs on the scene!

How fab to see Lorraine sharing her magic on Mamamia. Not Quite Nigella is my favourite blog, and an inspiration when it comes to food and travel.
Mind you, I find it a bit easier to follow her travel suggestions than whip up a recipe, but it sure is fun reading about her delicious creations, even if I can’t make them!
loading...
Hi Amanda! Hehe that’s cool, I’m just glad that you enjoy it
And I feel the same way when I see what chefs come up with
loading...
Not all of us want to be anything like Nigella Lawson. Her food hygiene is appalling and she gives the impression that she can take it or leave it when it comes to food. She has no passion and holds no interest for me.
loading...
What’s wrong with her food hygiene?
loading...
Agree anonymous. She never washing anything she takes out of a packet (lettuce leaves, strawberries etc) literally, tears open something potentially covered in god knows and drowns it in cream, butter, oil whatever. Always refers to how “lazy” she is in the kitchen, and what’s with the satin nightgowns and her raiding the fridge after each episode? Anyway people seem to like her, catchy blog name too.
loading...
anonymous I am Hysterically laughing, I agree !! my brother is a huge fan of hers but I just dont get the satin nightgown and sneeking to the kitchen for a feed as the show ends…drives me crazy.
But I LOVE Not Quite Nigella….we always agree, (often find myself nodding head whilst reading) !!
loading...
Aww poor Nigella, she really divides people doesn’t she? People have such strong opinions on her
Thanks so much snipplygal!!

You are so right. Have you noticed she never tops and tails her beans, but then the finished product has been?????
loading...
Just so you know, you can buy pre-trimmed beans in UK supermarkets.

Nigella Lawson was how I fell in love with baking. I’m going to check out your blog Lorraine. Cheaper than cookbooks!

When I grow up I want to be a food blogger. Oh wait. I’m 42.

Has anyone here been to Sri Lanka? We’re going for a wedding in October … any tips?
loading...
I went… back in 2004. We absolutely LOVED it. Great food, people, scenery… everything! Kandy and Galle must dos! And the train trip from Columbus to Kandy is fab.
loading...
Sri Lanka is absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend it. As the previous commenter said – train from Colombo to Kandy is a great experience. Towns around the south are great too, and have lovely beaches, like Galle and Bentota. Sigiriya Rock is a good option to. And make sure you go look at lots of elephants! They’re everywhere in some of the national parks. Damn it, just writing this makes me want to go back.

Love this. Food blogging is my dream. Meanwhile I’ll have to be content with instgraming all my meals!
lol

The world is so different now to when I was at school. Imagine your school career counselor telling you that “food blogger” was a possible job! How cool is that? Love it.

Hehe you’re right. I never would have thought it myself either

I love reading food blogs and recipe magazines (Donna Hay in particular) … it’s my porn. I can’t cook but love to look at images of food. Good on you, Lorraine!

Food blogs are my porn too.

Thanks so much Snoopy! Donna Hay is a favourite of mine too

I’ve been a fan of your blog for ages Lorraine – to the point where if we’re going out somewhere my boyfriend will search your website for restaurants knowing that I’ll want to try your recommendations!!!
Great to see you here on my other favourite blog!!

Hi Denisegidget! Oh that’s wonderful! I’m so glad that you find the blog useful for eating out (another favourite past time here

Lorraine you are AMAZING!! I have so so much admiration for you and what you are achieving, not to meantion your blog is just fabulous. I am only quite a new follower & blogger myself so it is wonderful to be able to see and read of everything you do! I love waking up to new posts and am always drooling at the wonderful food you discover, I too am obsessed with anything to do with food!! I look forward to reading many more NQN posts!! Rosie x

Rosie, thank you! You are too kind
I’m so glad that you enjoy the blog. I so love sharing things with everyone and when I try something new or fantastic, I cannot wait to put it up on the blog! Happy dinner

And we are all so glad that you do share everything about your food-loving life with us! It is wonderful and so interesting! Above is my blog address (a combination of many things but also a little bit of food reviewing from here in Adelaide!), I will be sure to let you know when I attempt to make your delicious sprinkle cake- it is so pretty I can’t wait to make it! Thanks Lorraine

I love love love love food blogs or as I sometimes call them food porn…. yum!
loading...
Ha ha ha – Food porn! How about “cake porn” – http://www.theansweriscake.com/ – I look but I don’t cook.
I love your blog Lorraine. I think I like you more than the “real” Nigella. She’s too OTT for my tastes. I don’t buy Twinnings tea anymore because her ad bugs me (I laughed when I saw the Dilmah link on your post – clever}.
And I think all those serious journalists are quite jealous of you – especially given the huge job cuts at Fairfax that have just been announced. Maybe you can throw them some writing work.
I’m really really looking forward to your Mamamia posts – and until then it’s popcorn for dinner again… (well not quite – but close)
loading...
Caramel80-I love food porn too!
Thank you so much Mary!
Oh yes what a day for journalists-it sounds like tough times ahead
.
Hehe well sometimes we have omelettes for dinner-on those days where I just don’t have time to cook!
So it’s kind of like popcorn for dinner!
loading...
Hi Lorraine, nice to see you on mamamia!
loading...
Hi there Stefanie!
loading...
Forgot to add, I use food blogs as a source of inspiration for recipes far more than I use recipe websites (eg Taste, Best Recipes etc). My favourite thing about food blogs is that you are reading the author’s personal experience with the recipe – what did/didn’t work, what they would change, how they ‘plated’ it etc.
loading...
I LOVE your blog, Lorraine ! Fabulous recipes and great photos, and i have really enjoyed reading all of your travel stories. Can’t wait until your book comes out, you deserve every success!
Also, I really love the ‘Restaurants by Cuisine’ part of your blog, we found a great Indonesian restaurant after reading your review of it
I started my own food blog (although I do not have the writing/photography skills to ever take it further) after being inspired by all of the other awesome food/lifestyle blogs out there (http://bakingmyselfhappy.blogspot.com.au/)
loading...
Thank you so much Bakingmyselfhappy!
What a sweet thing to say. Those chocolate truffles look delicious and I’d love one right now. I’m so glad that you enjoy the blog and other blogs too. I have to admit to a heavy addiction to blogs

Hi everyone!
I’m so honoured to be on Mamamia, which I’ve been following for sooo long. I thought I should clarify some things about how to make money blogging because I didn’t realise that that was going to be the post title and since it is, I can imagine people would like more clarification
Making money through blogging is a slow process but it requires a couple of things:
1) The support of your family and friends (both emotional and financial)
2) Patience (something I don’t have a lot of…)
I sat there for the first year not being paid a cent which was difficult (with our first mortgage, I thought I might be crazy!
). It’s almost 5 years later and as you may know, the media world is in a changing state and gradually people have come around to the idea of blogs. You can make money on your blog (advertising and sponsorship) or you can make money off the blog. These are things like the book deal, TVCs (I did a little ad for Cornetto a couple of years ago), speaking engagements and filming work. They don’t necessarily happen on the blog but they come about because of the blog and these are really the best ways to make money as the advertising and sponsorship route are a bit slow going.
I hope that helps clarify things a bit and of course, if you have any other questions then please let me know!
Lorraine

I definitely agree on the needing support from family and friends, I really want to make my blog work but no support from my family means I really can’t keep it up for much longer.
Wish I knew how to make them agree with what I’m trying to do! You are such an inspiration Lorraine, you are the reason I started the blog and you are the reason I want to continue it. I hope blogging full time won’t just be a dream.
loading...
One of my favourite food blogs… it’s on my daily “I’m awake, let me hit my favourite sites before my feet hit the floor” list. *lol*
loading...
Thank you so much kirstys!!
loading...
Me too, every morning I get the newsletter. Then it’s a little look and I find what I want to cook for dinner. Thanks Lorraine. Xx
loading...
Thank you so much for reading Bushki! xxx
loading...
I love Lorraine’s blog and I’m a daily reader.
I’m a bit engrossed in the blog world at the moment and am trying to figure out how I will make money doing it myself. I’m in a bit of a different position though because I’m one of those horrid mummy bloggers (that blogs primarily about food). I’ve just started to pick up a few paid writing gigs here and there and it is possible to make good money doing it.
Just one good sponsored post per week on top of paid ads on the site is a pretty decent pay. The big guns are doing 3 or 4 of these $1000 posts per week. Not bad money really.
loading...
Hi Kristy-Thank you so much!
That’s great that you’re getting paid gigs writing too-a big congratulations!
loading...
I am so bad at cooking, I could make money from people tuning in to see what disaster I am attempting to pass off as “dinner” every day of the week.
My new year’s resolution was to “like cooking more”, given I have to cook for 5 or 7 most nights of the week.
I have failed. It is still just another chore. We have to have a stash of 2 minute noodles to feed the kids when things go pears-up at dinner time.
loading...
Very few food bloggers do this full-time. I know Helen of Grab Your Fork does a full-time day job, then spends about 30hr a week outside that working on her blog. This tends to be the case across a lot of food bloggers. Billy Law of A Table For Two (former Masterchef contestant) is one of the lucky ones to do food blogging full-time, but he fills the rest of his days doing other projects.
Food blogging alone is definitely not financially sustainable for many people if you have kids or a mortgage.
loading...
Do you write about the disasters in your blog as well? I often learn more from when it goes wrong then when it goes right.
loading...
Hi hms-Hehe yes I do and I agree, it’s great to learn from disasters too!
loading...
But HOW did you make money as a blogger?
loading...
Good question. I’ve often wondered this myself. There are so many bloggers, how do they make any money, let alone enough money to have a life?
loading...
Theres ad’s on the blog and sponsored posts.
i guess once your readership is big enough, you start selling space.
loading...
I clicked on this hoping that’s what it would be about! I know they make it from advertising and sponsored posts, but how do you go from no advertising to getting $1,000* a sponsored post?
*as reported on The Project last week.
loading...
A butt-load of hits and a general theme thats appealing to advertisers, plus a fair bit of networking and a lot of consistency (advertisers won’t be lining up if you regularly go a week or two without posting).
Not many bloggers get anything close to that for a sponsored post. Even popular bloggers are often just sent a small goodie bag of products to try and review, no payment included.
loading...
This is a really great read into the business of blogging. Keep in mind, this is on the scale of US audiences, so any monetary amounts and audience reach would have to be adapted proportionally for the Aussie market – http://www.wwd.com/media-news/digital/a-closer-look-at-the-business-of-blogging-5942163?full=true
loading...
Hi Miss T- you can sign up with an agency or you may find that people contact you to do sponsored posts. I haven’t really done sponsored posts but I am aware that many people do. From what I understand, the amount that you get for a sponsored post can depends on readership numbers. Also as anonymous said below, consistent posts are good because it keeps readers coming back.
loading...
Thanks Lorraine!
loading...
I’d assume it’s primarily from advertising. I know Lorraine also has a book coming out soon.
loading...
Hi anonymous-I’ve gone into a bit more detail in my comment. I hope that helps
