Mia writes: Welcome to a sponsored post from HEINZ BEANZ® . Lana has been planning a little cooking surprise for me. I’ll hand you straight over to her to tell you all about it :
It’s time for a little cooking inspiration on Mamamia and what could be more inspiring than HEINZ BEANZ?
HEINZ BEANZ are a low GI food, low in fat, high in muscle-building protein and complex carbohydrates and high in fibre.
They are packed with protein, iron, vitamins and minerals and a great source of fibre, and even better – they are all goodness, with no added preservatives.
Last time we put a HEINZ BEANZ challenge to our readers (click here to see) it was clear that we are a community of HEINZ BEANZ eaters. We like them on toast, we like them straight from the tin, we like them with our scrambled eggs and we like them in our soups. It’s clear there is more to HEINZ BEANZ than just a spoon – they are an important ingredient in your cooking
So today we are going to issue a challenge to Mia, whose favourite HEINZ BEANZ recipe has got to be – simply from a tin. Leave us a recipe that includes HEINZ BEANZ and the recipe that gets the most thumbs up is the recipe that Mia will use in our next cooking demonstration. It’s up to you people – give us your best HEINZ BEANZ recipe and we will put Mia to the test
If Mia is able to meet this challenge Mamamia will donate $500 to Kids Helpline! So go wild.

When I was in Year 9, living up in the Kimberley region of WA, nearly 30 years ago, my class went on a self sufficiency camp to a local waterhole. Our Home Economics teacher (love you Mrs Titmarsh – you taught me the shepherds pie recipe that I still use today, and how to wrangle vintage sewing machines!!) had given us a recipe for breakfast that used ingredients that were non-perishable.
I give you “Pineberter”:
1 can of baked beans
1 can of drained pineapple pieces
1 can of tinned frankfurters, chopped
Pour all in saucepan and heat over campfire.
Sounds like a bizarre combination – very 70′s/80′s – but so very delicious!!

I had an argument with my sister the other week about baked beans. She’s a bit of a bossy boots and when I said that baked beans were a really good food, from a nutritional standpoint, she kept contradicting me. She tells me there is a lot of sugar in them.
I think that the benefits of the protein, fibre, and other nutrients outweighs the bit of sugar in the sauce. Especially as a fast snack that you might have half a can quickly warmed up as opposed to a chocolate bar. I find them really good at 3:30 on a cold winter’s afternoon. My favourite are the English Recipe ones.

Would love to enter but an only offer my all time favourite:

Baked bean fritters with bacon and parsley is my suggestion – potato fritters with a bit of a twist.
Gently fry 1/2 a diced onion and 2 diced rashers of bacon in a pan. Combine with a 400g can of baked beans with 3/4 cup mashed potato, a palmful of parsley, 1/2 a cup of self-raising flour and 2 egg yolks. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon into a frying pan (use a little oil) and cook over a low to moderate heat.
Serve with whatever sauce takes your fancy (old fashioned tomato works for me), and some extra bacon.

Oh – and it works spectacularly with a mixed leaf salad on the side. If you can cook a pikelet and tear open a bag of salad, this recipe’s pretty much foolproof.

Yuuuuuuums!! What a great recipe! Having been (or should that be “bean”?) brought up by a very Irish mum on “boxty” (aka potato pancakes) this is a very inspirational Aussie twist on same! I’ll definitely give this one a shot…wish me luck…I’m not much of a cook….!!!

In a fry pan, saute a diced onion and a finely chopped chiili in a little oil. While the onion & chilli are cooking, empty a can of beans into a bowl. With a potato masher, roughly mash the beans until there are a few largish pieces of bean visible. Add the mashed beans to the onion and chili and mix well. Add a crushed clove of garlic and a finally diced tomato. Fry until the mixture is heated through and a little thickened. Place a couple of tabs of bean min in a floured tortilla along with lettuce & grated cheese, wrap and enjoy.

Mexe-beans and rice!
Fry some chopped garlic (I use heaps!), onion and capsicum in a big pot. Add a couple cups of brown rice, about a cup of veg stock, a tin of chopped tomatoes, some pepper, a few generous spoons of mexican powder (the kind in the little packets you can buy in the mexican section at supermarket- burrito or taco flavour, doesn’t matter which), and enough water to cover it all.
Cook on low heat until the rice is done (I don’t use exact measurements obviously, but if it gets too dry just add more water). When the rice is cooked through and it’s all still a bit saucy, stir in a tin of baked beans. Let it cook through for a few more minutes.
Serve mexe-beans and rice by itself, with salad, on toast, with cheese melted on it… it’s so good! You can chuck in any veg you like, celery or corn work well
Baked bean pie!
Get yourself some puff pastry. Line a pie tin with it, chuck in your beans with whatever else turns your crank. I’m vegetarian but you could add in some mince or chopped meat or even chicken. Make sure you put lots of grated cheese in it, cheddar/tasty is fine and dandy. Maybe add some tomato for extra yumminess. Bung some more pastry on top, poke a couple holes in it, maybe brush some milk or egg wash over the top if youre feeling fancy. Stick in the oven at 180ish and wait til it’s all brown and crispy. Remove from oven. Scoff.
Apologies for the vagueness and total lack of measurements, I truly never measure anything, I always just make it up as I go along :/
I have mexe-beans and rice for lunch today actually, I make it often and freeze it in batches to bring to work. Yay!

I cannot believe all the FANCY things people make with baked beans. I am truly impressed. I genuinely thought I was fancy putting them in toasted sandwiches with cheese for the kids. Or on top of a baked potato with cheese (which is like a national dish in England).
I have some serious baked bean work to do I see.

This is my fave for a low fuss, healthy dinner:
fry up some onion, garlic, mushies in olive oil
add some chopped tomatoes, himalayan rock salt and cracked pepper
throw in a can of heinz beans
once the beans are heated through add spinach and two eggs
stir continuously until it’s a creamy tomato consistency (about 2 mins)
turn off heat and mix a chopped avocado through the mixture
serve with toast or crusty bread
Quick – all up it takes about 15-20 mins (prep & cooking)
Healthy – there’s plenty of protein, healthy fats and healthy carbs
Delish!

i think it is quite a feat to make a delicious breakfast with eggs, bacon, tomato, beans, mushrooms and hot toast. make it all at the same time and make sure it’s ready at the same time. i have NEVER managed it, something is always cold, soggy, over-cooked and under-cooked, and one thing is just right!
loading...
And spinach! And yes it is hard to have them ready at the same time, the only way I can (nearly) manage it is to have heaps of pots, plates, bowls and general mess. Well worth it though.

I know this does not sound exciting, but this dish was introduced to me as a tween at a BBQ at Whale Beach and I have loved it ever since. It is the perfect accompaniment to BBQ snags – especially when the weather cools and you need something to go with a salad.
Can of baked beans
One onion finely diced
Few rashers of bacon, diced
Little bit of curry powder
Cook bacon and onion for a few minutes, then add a bit of curry powder (just that Keens stuff in the orange tin)
Then add the beans and cook everything for about 5 minutes
It’s a winner

Growing up this was a staple in our poor household.
Beans topped with mashed potato and then grated cheese, then another layer of beans, mashed potato and cheese on top, then put into the oven for the cheese to melt.
My mouth still waters at this simple meal.

Ok so, as a full time working Mum of two and a vegetarian, I eat HEINZ BEANZ at least twice a week – and this is my never fail YUMMY recipe. In a saucepan, lightly saute some diced tomato and diced red capsicum in a teeny bit of olive oil for a minute. Add the beans and cook until heated through. When heated, take off the heat and add some chopped shallots and basil (if in season) and gently stir through half an avocado cut into chunks. Pour into a bowl and serve with sprouts on top. Serve with or without toast. YUM!
(Basil can be replaced by rocket or spinach or anything else green).

Gently fry garlic and onions. Add tin of tomatoes and herbs and simmer. Add baked beans. Add a big hunk of blue cheese and let it melt. Serve on toast.

I live on beans, but have never really tried anything fancy with them? Does baked beans on toast count?
I challenge you to make baked beans on toast Mia, on an open fire!

I ‘wankify’ my baked beans, I fry garlic and onion and add it to the beans along with tinned tomatoes, salt pepper and as much chilli as i can possibly take, then you serve it on toasted sourdough with avocado, rocket and a soft poached egg. nom

YUM!!!! You’ve just sold me on that idea!

I make “volcanos” for the boys for dinner. Cook up some mashed potato and sculpt into mountains on plates, make a hole in the centre of the mountain so it’s more like a crater. Fill with baked beans and allow to ooze down the outside of the mountain. da da!! volcano!!

Beans with Truffle:
Cook beans in medium sized saucpan. Toast two pieces of bread; smother generously with margarine. When beans are hot, add 1tsp of salt and stir. Scoop beans out on to the toast, taking care to make it look pretty. Grate black truffles generously on top. Serve with foie gras on the side, and a large martini.

When I was a child and friends of our family got together, whilst the adults were guinea-pigs for the latest recipes from the Women’s Weekly…the kids were fed a mixture of tinned baked beans and spaghetti. It was eaten with such reverence. This was celebrity chef fare before we knew what a celebrity chef was.
Was anybody else fed this tasty treat ? Was it just a Brisbane thing or was it a national favourite ?
Can abyone remember the homemade vanilla slices that used Sao biscuits in place of the flakey pastry base ? Again, was this a national thing or just done in Brisbane

My mum made sao biscuit vanilla slice and we lived in SA. It was the best… must try it myself one day soon…

We like spicing them up a bit to go on the side of a hearty fry-up:
1 onion, sliced however you like it
1 tsp Cajun spices
salt and pepper to taste
Fry the onion in a pan with a little oil. Pour in can of Heinz Beanz and mix together. Add Cajun spices, mix through. Season with salt and pepper, dig in!
