A college student charged with rape in the US claims he was just re-enacting a scene from Fifty Shades of Grey with a fellow student.

19-year old Mohammad Hossain.

The alleged rapist, 19-year old Mohammad Hossain is accused of tying up his victim, whipping and punching her before raping her in his room at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The Chicago Tribune reports that in court prosecutors said Hossain and the 19-year old woman with whom he had “previously been intimate” but was not dating were in his room on Saturday evening Hossain allegedly asked the woman to remove her clothing which she did, keeping on her bra and underwear.

According to the Prosecutor Hossain bound her hands above her head and to a bed with a belt, used another belt to bind her legs and stuffed a necktie into her mouth.

The accused claimed he was re-enacting “Fifty Shades of Grey”

The Assistant State’s Attorney Sarah Karr said that he used a knit cap to cover the 19-year old woman’s eyes and removed the woman’s bra and underwear.

From The Chicago Tribune:

“He then began striking the woman with a belt. After hitting her several times, the woman told Hossain he was hurting her, told him to stop “and began shaking her head and crying,” said Karr.

Hossain continued striking the woman — including with his fists, according to an arrest report — and she managed to get one arm, and then another, free. But he then held her arms behind her back and sexually assaulted her as she continued to plead for him to stop.”

The woman reported the assault soon after she left the room.

His chilling Facebook status only hours later was “Feeling Satisfied”

Mohammad Hossain’s lawyer Sandra Bennewitz, told the court that he was a model student involved in many leadership programs and was a triathlete.

The judge asked the lawyer “how can someone involved in all that let a movie persuade him to do something like this?”

“He would say that it was consensual,” she replied.

Hossain is a student at the University of Illinois.

According to police when he was arrested Hossain told them they were re-enacting scenes from “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

The movie, which has wracked up $410million in global sales has come under fire for glamorizing stalking and abusive behaviour.

In a review of the movie which has gone viral Rosie Waterland wrote for Mamamia:

“But there is no doubt in my mind that the film I watched last night was a disturbing and clear depiction of a controlling and emotionally abusive relationship. This was domestic violence. I don’t care how many women learned to embrace sex because of Fifty Shades of Grey. THIS WAS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.”

“This was domestic violence.”

Dawn Hawkins the Executive Director of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation agreed writing for CNS News “Mark our words: the rate of violent sexual assault will surely rise with this film.”

Mohammad Hossain remains in custody on a $500,000 bail.
