1. Queensland Police declared an emergency situation in Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall today after they received reports of a man running through the street screaming and carrying a gun. The area was evacuated and members of the public placed into lock down. The seige ended when police shot the gunman in the arm with rubber bullets.

2. The look of your Facebook news feed is set to change. The social network is making over its user’s home pages so they resemble a “personalised newspaper”. There will be a focus on “bright, beautiful” stories and high-resolution photos – think Instagram and Twitter style. Announcing the changes in California, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said: “I think there is a special place in the world for this sort of personalised newspaper… It should have a front page and top news section or let you drill down into any topic you want.”

3. An Australian army psychologist has spoken out about what he says is a neglect of abuse victims in the Australian Defence Force. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Morgan spoke to ABC’s 7:30 last night where he said he was the target of a gay vilification campaign on Facebook in 2010. “I’m speaking out because I’m concerned about the wellbeing of our junior soldiers who are experiencing abuse in Defence today…. If I as a senior officer can’t get Defence to do the right thing, they have absolutely no hope.”

4. One Nation founder Pauline Hanson says she’s going to run in this year’s federal election. She told the Seven Network: “I’m going to put my hand up. I’m going to apply for the job and hopefully the people think that I’m the best person for that job to represent them.”

5. Australia’s longest tree sit has ended because of a bushfire. Miranda Gibson, 31, had been living in a eucalyptus tree in Tasmania 449 days. She initially said she’d stay there until the Government made a commitment to protect the area from logging. Miranda decided to come down from the place she’d been living since December 2011 because a bushfire came within 2 kilometres of the site.

6. A company who created and sold t-shirts with the slogans “Keep Calm and Rape A Lot”, “Keep Calm and Knife Her” and “Keep Calm and Kill Her” has halted sales after being accused of misogyny. Michael Fowler, the creator of the Melbourne founded company Solid Gold Bomb, blamed a “computer error” for the slogans that appeared on the shirts. He said he had programmed a computer to produce variations of the famous WWII poster “Keep Calm and Carry On”.

7. Today is International Women’s Day.  The theme of this year’s day is: “A promise is a promise: time for action to end violence against women.”
