What’s the most relaxing song in the world? More relaxing than a walk, a cup of tea or even a massage? A group of scientists and a British band have compiled what they have worked out to be the most relaxing tune in the history of man. Sound therapists played it to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than any other.
Apparently the tune is so relaxing that people are being advised against listening to it while driving so if you are not in the car take a listen…
It’s certainly not the song that’s burning a hole in my playlist, but there are plenty of others that I’m currently obsessed with.
I got some music from a friend and have had Kings of Leon and Death Cab for Cutie running on repeat (it won’t surprise you that everyone in the office has been laughing at me for being 1000 years behind trend).
But the song I have become completely addicted to? “Easy to Love” by The Jezabels. It’s had over 800,000 views on Youtube and I’m probably responsible for 795,000 of those views.
What’s burning a hole in your playlist right now and why do you love it?

Found this one unexpected but good … http://www.spinner.com/2012/02/17/chris-cornell-i-will-always-love-you-whitne/
A nice tribute…

Xavier Rudd always brings me back to a good spot… especially his new song ‘Follow The Sun’.
loading...
‘It’s nice to be alive’ by Ball Park Music it’s adroable, so up lifting!
Jezebels’ new album and particualrly ‘Endless Summer’, is also pretty brilliant, Nat.

I am in love with Passenger. His music is simply beautiful and when you watch him live you can feel the passion behing his songs. He’s made a bit of a name by busking where ever he travels too so if you can’t get to a gig you can sometimes catch a free lunchtime session. It’s usually just him and the guitar and the music is folk I guess? Boy & Bear fans would like him (in fact they have a song together). Check him out – http://www.myspace.com/passengerofficial

Very talented home grown musicians.

Brilliant, brilliant idea for a post!
Please repeat this regularly.
I’m always looking our for new ideas for music.
Just as much as books.
Books and music, I can’t live without a regular dose of both.
loading...
I heard Lily Louise a 15 year old from Wollongong on the ABC the other day and I just loved her so much I iTuned her album. A bit Lisa Mitchellish but much better.

Lanaelise44
Just downloaded Little Lion Man and The Cave.
I’m a sucker for the twang (banjo). Nice heads up.
loading...
I love The Cave and Mumford and Sons. A band that I would like to see live one day.
loading...
There’s lots of good music around at the minute! This week my favorites have been:-
1. The new Human League album called Credo. 25years this year for the HL and still going strong. This is their best album since Dare and surprisingly fresh.
2. An Indie Rock band from Freemantle called San Cisco with their new song called Awkward. Great video (on YouTube) and VERY catchy song you will be singing all day! (these guys will be big!)
3. Emptied out a box in the garage and found an old LP with a self titled album by Buster Poindexter. A Jazz/Blues/Lounge Music/Calypso album (how’s that for a combination!) Stand out track is Hot Hot Hot ( used in lots of movie soundtracks) but my favorites are Bad Boy, Smack Dab in the Middle. Once played, you will never be able to put this album away! Check out some of his stuff on YouTube.
loading...
San Cisco are brillaint. ‘Awkward’ is such a cute song considering it’s kinda about stalking….
loading...
So, so many things.
Off the top of my head: latest Seabellies and Chairlift are all lovely.
loading...
Yes M.I.A. and happy stuff The Grates, GroupLove, Arcade Fire
loading...
Despite Grouplove naming an album ‘Never Trust a Happy Song’?
loading...
bon iver bon iver bon iver
their latest album is GENIUS
loading...
Was going to say Bon Iver. Holycene is very relaxing!
loading...
I haven’t listened much to the new album. Skinny Love still sends shivers down my spine.
The dude’s relationship & band broke up and he retreated to a cabin in Wisconsin to lick his wounds. He wrote that album during that time. Distilled pain, anger and anguish beautifully evoked.
loading...
Anything by Boyce Avenue – they do the best covers ever!
Ed Sheeran “Give me love” is constantly on repeat on my ipod!
loading...
Ed Sheeran “Lego House” just resonates with me, he’s so talented!
Also “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap
AND most stuff by The Kooks – especially “Shine On”
loading...
I also love the Kooks – She moves in her own way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pquhYpGHrlw
loading...
I could listen to that a million times and never get sick of it! love the kooks
loading...
I love that whole album!
loading...
Ed Sheeran rocks!
loading...
Too many relaxing favorites!! But up there is asleep by the smiths( so beautiful!) ny batteri by Sigur ros- anything by them really. Also Bon iver of course. Fleet foxes. I could go on forever ! Sweet dreams, every one
loading...
I had the smiths playing last night, while I was in the shower. Still love ‘em.
loading...
My playlist is stuck in the 80′s. I am currently listening to the Smiths boxset, the first Aztec Camera album – High Land, Hard Rain and the soundtrack to the ABC TV series from the 80′s – Sweet and Sour. Also loving the latest Ryan Adams album Ashes and Fire and Lana Del Rey (in spite of the hype). I have a 3 year old son so the Jake and the Neverland Pirates soundtrack is also getting a good run in the car, yo ho ho!
loading...
The Jezabels ‘Mace Spray’ was absolutely flogged on my iPod for a very long time… now it seems Lana Del Rey’s ‘Blue Jeans’ & ‘Video Games’ are on repeat. Love!
loading...
The Mixed Tape by Jack’s Mannequin can never go wrong.
loading...
Anything by Jack’s Mannequin
.. or really anything involving Andrew McMahon will always make me happy!
loading...
Oh so agreed!
loading...
Also, JM and Relient K are my two favourite bands EVER and they are both playing at the same gig at Soundwave in Melbourne in March. But guess who’s not 18?
loading...
I’m going to my first soundwave this year mainly for jacks and The Used- I didn’t realise it was 18+… luckily I am but that sucks for you!
Surely they are playing underage side shows that you could go to?
loading...
Tell me about it! Jack’s and RK are playing a sideshow together with Dashboard Confessional which is 18+. And my birthday is six weeks after it! Oh well another time…
loading...
But you enjoy it!
loading...
Thanks
I missed out on a couple of good shows that were 18+ before I was…Only two months to go though until you’ll never have that problem again!
loading...
Yeah I’ll survive! Thanks, that offers a bit of comfort
loading...
I didnt think soundwave was 18+…. Last year the alcohol was separate and you needed a wrist band. Maybe double check just in case, coz I was pretty sure it was all ages.
Edit – just checked the website, “all shows are licensed and all ages” – from about page on the website
loading...
Soundwave isn’t 18+ but the sideshow I wan’t to go to is unfortunately. And even if I could afford a Soundwave ticket they’re all sold out.
loading...
The soundtrack to ‘Love Actually’!
loading...
Can I just say top Friday arvo post. Almost as good as ‘what are you reading’ posts!
Good work Nat, tell your boss I said you can have the rest of the week off.
loading...
Cheers Idle! I do try.
loading...
Ditto, Nat.Top notch.
loading...
Sia – Breathe Me
It’s my fave song of all time, I can listen to it on repeat all day and not get tired of it. It’s just sooooooo beautiful.
loading...
The version I have on my ipod is a live version of that song and I absolutely love it. It’s a special song for my boyfriend and I too…… it’s a hauntingly beautiful song. Good choice!
loading...
Awesome song
loading...
Yes. Brilliant.
loading...
Shake It Out – Florence and the Machine
LOVE it – trying to follow the advice on breaking free from inhibitions!
loading...
My fav from that album is No Light, No Light ;D
loading...
That relaxing song was really irritating – far from relaxing.
Listening to City and Colour, Mac Miller, Yelawolf, Florence and the Machine, Foster the People, Niva, San Cisco, Kimbra, The Jezabels, Boy and Bear.
loading...
OMG, haven’t Mac Miller & Yelawolf got potty mouths?
Liked Lost Patience & Dirty Water a lot.
Rocket Ship is a rollicking tune, but Awkward is fantastic- really like San Cisco, thanks for the intro.
loading...
Anything that was in triple j’s hottest 100 top 10. I just love them all!!!
Monster by Kanye West……so much profanity but there is something about that beat. A great work out song
loading...
I sing that in my car.. there is something soothing about saying mother fucker that many times in an enclosed space.
loading...
Oh, that song is just phenomenal. It’s brilliant. I learn and find something new every time I hear it. Nicki Minaj – WOW. I actually don’t like her other stuff, but in that song, she’s fantastic.
loading...
There is an application that works on a phone made by a fruit themed company that people tend to get a little sniffy about if you mention you have one in your possesion here at MM, called Naturespace.
It has the best natural soundtracks I’ve found. I tend not to be able to listen to music with lyrics at work – it distracts me, and classical music is too soft (that is, I can hear people talking clearly). Tracks on Naturespace like various waves breaking type stuff, thunderstorms and my current favourite, rain as heard from inside a tent (annoying in real life, awesome in abstract) act as the perfect white noise. I like the beach stuff in winter and the rain stuff in summer (though this summer is a bit messed up).
Very relaxing.
Musically I’ve been getting into the Stones album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! and the dead Beach Boy Dennis Wilson’s solo album Pacific Ocean Blue. Yup, boring Dad music all the way.
loading...
Hi ID, quick question for you – would some of the soundtracks on this app also be helpful with sleeping? Can’t download it til I get home and connect to wifi.
loading...
I don’t see why not! There are a couple (including some of the free pre-installed ones) that have the humming tone in the background that are slightly hypnotising and very relaxing (but I don’t like it at work, I have to concentrate, of course).
The app itself does have two settings – one for headphones (which is what I use at work, obviously) and one for stereo speakers or the phone speakers in a pinch.
It also has a sleep timer that you could set to (for example) an hour at which time it fades away.
loading...
how much do the extra soundtracks cost?
definitely going to download tonight – oh so party on a Friday night haha
loading...
Man, they should pay me!
Tracks bought individually (which is what I do) cost $1.99, there are some discounted packs but I recommend if you get the visitors pass, which I believe plays samples of all the different tracks, to help you decide which ones you’d like to buy.
Again, you don’t need to buy anything, it has about five free tracks, one of which is still one of my favourites.
loading...
I love this whole conversation.
loading...
you should be getting commission! Thanks.
On a side note – always love reading your comments on here – always informed, concise and logical comments and response to others
loading...
Warning, the guy talking on the visitor’s pass is… cheap movie theatre voice over man.
loading...
I bought a white noise CD to guide my newborn baby to sleep and both my husband and I couldn’t believe just how deeply we slept as a result, even with a baby in our room. It’s awesome.
loading...
Would love to know what that CD is
loading...
I have a downloaded track (from that fruit company) that I use for our kids sleeping. Kids are 10mths, 3yrs and 6 years and all sleep in the same room, we use Baby Sleep – Gentle Rain Showers.
loading...
AID, I’m sure my iPod music is way more ‘dad boring’ than yours. I have 1950s/1960s blues / soul / R & B on high rotation – boxed sets from Chess & Atlantic.
loading...
Thanks Nat, going to download ‘Easy to Love’ right now.
I can’t get enough of the Foster the People album ‘Torches’ at the moment. I listened to it yesterday afternoon while stuck in traffic after a long day at work. It chilled me right out. My current faves are ‘Warrant’ and ‘I Would Do Anything For You’.
My all time fave chillout song is ‘Lola’s Theme (Lola’s Loungin’ Mix)’ by The Shapeshifters. It’s the slowed down version of their dance track and a very special song to me.
loading...
Just bought ‘Torches’ upon your recommendation – loving it!
Thanks!
loading...
Fantastic!! Hope you enjoy it!!
loading...
Norah Jones is on my ‘sleeping’ mix for when I have insomnia. I find her very relaxing. Also Jezabels, Sarah Blasko, Coldplay, Boy and Bear and Bon Iver.
loading...
Same here, I think I fell asleep to “Come Away With Me” for three months straight towards the end of year 12!
loading...
Quite varied…
“Dog Days are Over” – Florence + the Machine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWOyfLBYtuU&ob=av3e
“Wild Ones” – Flo Rida & Sia
it’s a very catchy song!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOR_HuHRNs&ob=av3e
(Please, no judgement
“Golden Jubilee” – Boy & Bear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBRi6l3M5U4
Makes me do a little jig as I walk…
“Set Fire to the Rain” – Adele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri7-vnrJD3k&ob=av3n
loading...
Flo and B&B smoke my tyres. Love ‘em.
loading...
I have been collecting and listening to Native American music lately. It is beautiful, relaxing and the kind of music that doesn’t interfere with my thought processes when I am writing.
loading...
I am a huge Finn fan (Neil and Tim). I love anything by Crowded House (my fave), split enz (saw them twice when they toured in 06), as well as the Finn brothers together and their solo work. Also a big You Am I fan too! I have a highly varied collection of songs on my iPod, but the Finns are my go too music!!
loading...
Anything touched by a Finn is gold in my book – including Liam Finn & Betchadupa.
Curious to know- have you heard anything by Pajama Club? Haven’t heard yet and I’m curious!
loading...
My ipod is filled withLilttle Birdy, The Civil Wars, The Head & the Heart, Patrick Watson, City and Colour, Sanders Bohlke…
loading...
Mine are mostly embarrassing. I’ve been re-listening to a lot of Adele. And I have found my new favourite brisk-walk-march song to the train station: My Home by Mojo Juju. I love it, everyone in the office hates it.
Oh and M.I.A’s latest song rocks!
loading...
I don’t think I will ever get sick of Adele’s album…just spectacular!
loading...
M.I.A? Mia? Sooooo brainwashed.
loading...
And here I was thinking I was a Freed man.
loading...
Cor blimey guv, that was brilliant.
Hats off!
loading...
Every now and then I’m clever. Broken clock etc etc
loading...
One and the same. Word.
loading...
Rick wins..
loading...
I like it. Bit of a boy energy though, maybe why rest of office doesn’t like it.
Makes me want to tango rather than march.
If you like this, have you tried The Decembrists?
This’ll get you marching, plus twirling the baton.

Foster the People is getting a good run on my iPod at the moment, and my favourite artist in the whole wide world – City & Colour – just announced he’s coming to Aus in May so is back on repeat.
loading...
OMG Lucy I love you!! Have now set reminder to get tix to the oh so awesome Dallas Green!!! Didn’t know he was coming to Sydney but am STOKED! Hello Birthday present for the boy and I!!!
XXX
loading...
I, um, might be going twice. In Sydney – and at the Groovin the Moo festival. Not obsessed at all
loading...
Jealous!! My boyfriend introduced me to his music and I fell in love. He sits up there with Marcus Mumford….. mmm… Marcus Mumford.
These men and their music…. lyrics…. just lovely! My most played song on my iphone according to itunes is Little Hell – up to 180+ listens! (Northern Wind makes me cry nearly!)
loading...
Just downloaded Little Lion Man. I’m a sucker for the twang (banjo). Nice heads up.
loading...
Oh err, Foster the People is cool. Downloading now.
loading...
Jesus, possibly I just made it un-cool, or whatever the young people say these days
loading...
You did. I just had to delete all the Foster the People songs of my ipod
loading...
LOL
loading...
Loving Matt Corby “brother” at the moment. Was so entraced with his version of the black keys ‘lonely boy’ I missed my turn off to work.
Also loving Mamakin Beat and holler and especially “Tore my heart out “.
The triple J “like a version” are on constant play on my ipod.
loading...
…and he’s soooo beautiful to look at! Makes me feel like a dirty old woman…
loading...
I had no idea who he was when I heard that song. slightly dissappointed he was so young and good looking- way outta my league. But that voice!
loading...
Definitely a new addition for me is OhBijou:
http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Niagara/46ddym?src=5
Niagra. A beautiful tune!
loading...
Fresh meat. Gonna download
loading...
Band of Skulls new song, Bruises…loving it. Their last album is one of my favourites and I’m loving the new stuff too. Also Angus Stone’s new song I quite enjoyed, despite not loving Angus and Julia Stone together at all normally.
loading...
Lady of the sunshine?
loading...
I’ve been listening to The Bird and the Bee on repeat at work the last few days.
After a few too many drinks on Friday night I became obsessed with Snoop Dogg ‘Young, Wild and Free’ and can’t stop listening to it.. it’s not even that good of a song but it just reminds me of summer
also the one song that always relaxes me? Taste of Ink by the Used. It’s my goto song when I’m angry or ready to cry
loading...
Thought you’d never ask.

Party of One – Baby Doll
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l0_SbgD2qw
loading...
I like your taste in music
Funny note: clicked on the air review and james yuill youtube link and they both started playing. They got 30 seconds in before I realised they were both playing … and the mashed up song sounded really good!!
loading...
Thanks Chytrid. There must be an MC in you somewhere. Please throw up some links of your own. Gimme some more musical sugar.
loading...
This Sweet Love is killer – I love it!
loading...
Heavy Feather,
Glad you like. I found most of these songs really have crept under my skin. The list is actually a mix that I burned at the start of the year to play for NY.
Been playing it ever since.
loading...
The Jezabels are wonderful!
Prisoner and their older EPs, She’s so hard and Dark Storm are fantastic. Mace Spray and Hurt Me are my favourites. Trycolour on the Prisoner Albums is also fantastic.
If you get the chance, they’re also really good live!
I’ve had Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks and The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston stuck in my head (Lullaby is our warm down song at Zumba, and Whitney for obvious reasons) so i have had those on repeat.
They’re quite mellow songs, my favourite upbeat song at the moment is ‘Lonely Boy’ by The Black Keys!
loading...
Dave Matthews Band – they’re American, have been around for decades, but never got big here. But they are so wonderful, unlike anything else. They’re a mix of blues, soul, country, r&b, pop, everything. Some of their songs make me blush with the lyrics, and they’re best listened to on a Friday night with a wine.
Also Foo Fighters – it seems the older I get the harder I like it, and the Fooeys seem to be the same. Can’t get enough of Mr Grohl at the moment. There’s probably lots of fabulous new music out there, but I can’t get past these two Daves.
loading...
DMB are heaven!!! I could listen to “Crash” all day and not have enough! Surprisingly not many people know of them, but I am doing my best to educate the masses
loading...
LOVE Dave Mathews Band
loading...
I have a giant big crush on Hayley from the Jezabels. How divine she is! Haven’t stopped listening to See You In The Light by Michael Franti all week. It just makes me happy.
loading...
Anything Fleetwood Mac. I’ve always loved them but was given a Best Of CD for my birthday in January that is still on high rotation. My iPod is pretty eclectic though… Fleetwood Mac turns into Nat King Cole turns into Seeker Lover Keeper turns into the Wiggles (I have a 3 year old) and so on……
loading...
Anything by Kina Gratis or David Choi. So relaxing and lovely.
loading...
TV on The Radio. They were amazing live at the Harvest Festival and again at the Palace Theatre, I get shivers listening to them, even though their recorded stuff is not even in the same stratosphere as how they are live. Just truely talented musicians
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHrTOQ18yzU
loading...
So agree 100% ! I walked down the aisle to “Family Tree” – I just love them!
loading...
Currently loving Embrace by Oliver Tank and The Jungle Giants songs Mr Polite and No One Needs to Know.
loading...
My song of 2012 so far is Andrew in Drag by the Magnetic Fields…
