How many of the Oscar nominated movies have you seen? Any? All? Do you plan to watch the Oscars on Monday? Food writer and Blogger Tori Haschka takes her Oscar’s and her food very seriously. She writes:
“Some people have Halloween. Others celebrate Valentines Day with a bang. For us, it’s all about Oscars.
For the past six years The Hungry One and I have hosted an Oscars party (actually, I lie. Our wedding fell on the weekend of Oscars, so my sister managed to weave an Oscars theme into her MC duties. She awarded my husband ‘Best Score’ and our groomsmen and brideslaves were nominated as best supporting actors).
It’s the pinnacle of a festival of sorts. Before it there’s a whirlwind few weeks where we try and see as many of the nominated films as possible.
Then we brainstorm dishes to match the films nominated for best picture. This year there’s salted Red Bull ranita for The Social Network, Black Swan panna cottas and raw steak crostini for The Fighter . Then it’s the tricky part of actually making them all.
Most year’s there’s a dress code of ‘tracksuits and bling’ (you want to be comfortable if you’re going to be eating ten courses). This year we’re shaking it up a little with costumes related to the nominated films. At last, I have an opportunity to wear a shrug and a tutu. I suspect some of the boys are still going to come in tracksuits, and claim it’s training gear for ‘The Fighter’.
Over the years I’ve discovered a few things the hard way, now we
Make people lodge their ballots the day before (no cheating). Since I want to be surprised, I also keep away from news sites after midday.
Tape the live screening earlier in the day. We’ve found that way we can finish watching the ceremony at a civilised time (it is a school night).
Keep everyone quiet during the red carpet- surely the most important bit? We try and have drinks in our hands at this point. This is when the (civilised) drinking games start. We pick a signature colour for the year. Every time you see someone in that colour you have to take a sip. I think this year it will be emerald green.
We also keep drinks on hand during the ceremony. Every time someone gets cut off by the music, we take a sip. Every time someone thanks their mother; their agent or their deity of choice- we take a sip. Every time the camera cuts to Jack Nicholson looking smug in the front row,we take a sip. If there’s a wardrobe malfunction, then that’s two sips.
And most crucially, I try to be generous when other people beat me in the tipping.
I try. I really do. But this is serious stuff.
May your Oscars be golden.
Regards,
an Oscars addict
(NB, as part of my recovery, next weekend I’m going to go see a romantic comedy. Much less chance of someone having their limbs cut off, I feel).

What are you doing for the Oscars? Are you celebrating?

not me.
They are actors, which to me is the lowest form of art, because we all do it every day. I mean, give me week’s training and I could probably do a passable lady Macbeth, but not a Mozart piano sonnata, a Monet painting or a facial reconstruction.
Sure there are some who are good at it, but BIG DEAL. Enough of the fawning over these overpaid, vacuous ‘pretenders’.
For all the other awards (not for acting), I say, yeah, great, good onya, great job, and please start giving awards to ambos, Police officers, teachers, farmers, people whose talents actually matter to society and the world.
Having said all that, I don’t mind a bit of a peek at the frocks a week later in the supermarket queue, but that’s just reasearch re fashion styles, isn’t it (tongue in cheek)?
And I would NEVER criticise anyone who has a great time making party w friends over it.

Love the Oscars too….every year I also have girlfriends over for champagne and nibbles…love the red carpet. Prerecording is ideal, you can fast forward through the ads. Lots of fun x

Have officially put my thinking cap on. I think you’re definitely on the right track. Personally, I can’t wait for it
If only for an excuse to bust out my wedding veil again. It was way too pretty to only wear once.

Have not taken any notice of the Oscars since Gwyneth stole Our Cate’s Oscar.

Oh, thats sounds awesome! Sadly, i am the only person i know who actually cares about the Oscars, so i would have no-one to invite to my party

The Oscars are my Melbourne Cup and my Grand Final. I’m trying to decide whether I follow the results on twitter and online or whether I cut myself off and watch the delayed telecast with my friend that evening. Last year they were conveniently on a public holiday so we got to watch live, but this year it’s an ordinary workday

Party for two plan: My friend and I are not spoiling ourselves. This is really quite difficult: no internet, twitter, facebook, radio or TV from midday. My bf who works from home will download the broadcast and we’ll watch it when we finish work. There is a delayed telecast but it doesn’t start til 9:40 and has ads which is a bit much for a school night

I usually read about the winners on the internet, then watch the coverage at night to see the dresses and laugh at the speeches. That way, if I fall asleep because it’s going on too long, I won’t miss anything.

i think i may have to have my own Oscars party

We have Oscar shaped cookie cutters – all the way from the USA – Daughter found them on the internet for a school project last year on the dress designer Edith Head (she won so many Oscars it is scary). Thats the shape that our shortbread will be this weekend!!

Do you mind sharing the website?

I want to come lol. Usually block out all media, put the PJ’s on, send the kids to bed early then relax with a drink and some snacks and get all indignant when my favorite doesn’t win!

Read it already, last week, on Huff Post. Nuff said.

“Every time the camera cuts to Jack Nicholson looking smug in the front row,we take a sip”
That would get me pissed within, oh, about the first hour.

I want to come to your Oscars party…

I used to host a party where we all wore pyjamas with heels (much easier for everyone to drive home and fall in bed)
Now though I watch it as soon as it airs, the lure of seeing it as it happens and not having to impose a media blackout, which I did for years, has gotten the better of me.

Black Swan panacotta – what a fabulous idea! I might have to have an Oscars party after all.

Oh that sounds like the best fun ever! I love the Oscars but I’m usually up watching it by myself
I have only one other friend who adores it like I do – she records the ceremony every year and then on a quiet day she’ll listen carefully to all the acceptance speeches and archives her favourites. She has YEARS worth of fantastic Oscar/Emmy/Globes/Grammy speeches in her little library. Very dedicated woman!

I too love the Oscars and I am nearing 10 years of hosting a party for myself and my girlfriends. We all bring plates and champagne and get into it. It’s become a tradition and I really enjoy the night. It all started when I used to watch it at home alone while my now ex-husband went to bed, and I decided I would like some company with like-minded girlfriends. I also tape it earlier in the day to make it finish at a reasonable time. We all need a little glamour in our lives!

That sounds like so much fun! I don’t really get that excited over the Oscars, half the time I don’t even know it’s on. The only thing I care about i the red carpet, I love checking out the gowns in the glossies
