Straight into it my darlings. Mummy just realised that Eurovision will be on at the same time as The Voice and she doesn’t know how to process that information. I’m going to stop talking n the 3rd person and push on.
The judges had yet another costume change for night 2 of the battle rounds. Delta looked fierce in a navy sequined frock with severe shoulders, Joel had on a fine basketball singlet, Keith was perfect and Seal was almost wearing a shirt. I cannot believe the wardrobe people let him do 2 buttons up, for shame.
First up, team Keith. Stay at home Dad Cam Vs youth worker Taga -Cam was pretty cocky out of the blocks, he wrote Taga off as “weak”. Taga responded by being totally adorable. He smiled, pointed, clapped, wore a lovely pair of mustard slacks and charmed the crap out of everyone. The producers edited the package to look as though Cam had it in the bag, we all saw through that one. Taga had the goods and sang “If I could change the world” in such a joyful manner that Keith had no choice but to choose him.
Next Delta paired the Russian princess up against Jessica Rabbit aka Viktoria and Peta. These two were repeatedly called “intense” which I think was Delta’s code for cray cray. Viktoria, bless her, thought it poignant to point out how much older Peta was than her. Peta felt she WAS the song Delta had picked for them: Prince’s epic power ballad “Purple rain”. All’s I’m sayin’ is no one should be all up in Prince’s grill messing with his perfect song. Somewhere a small man of African/Caucasian descent and a penchant for Cuban heels is crying in a sexy, sexy room made of purple velvet. (Prince, I obviously am referring to Prince.) At one point when Viktoria was singing, Peta came up behind her and I thought … never mind, they gave what could only be described as an intensely intense performance. Both girls could sing, both looked smoking hot but in the end Delta went the girl most likely to wait for her in the car park after the show – Viktoria. (Smart Goodrem, smart.)
Seal chose the lovely Michael with the delicate beauty spot and Anthony to sing Stevie Wonder’s classic “Living for the city”. It was pretty obvious from the get go that Seal preferred Michael as a singer. They both gave it a red hot crack but I think Stevie should probably be the only one singing Stevie. Seal chose Michael, the end.
Next it was a battle of sheer hair product. The multi-talented and immaculate Nick up against Robert Pattinson look-a-like: Laykn. Joel picked Angus and Julia Stone’s “Big jet plane” for the boys to sing. I liked them both. I liked them so much I was imagining how nice their hair would smell. The song suited Laykn’s laid back style more so he progressed to the next round.
Back to team Delta and what do we have here? A “diva derby” you say Keith Urban? Indeed it was, Dannie vs Sarah. Delta did what needed to be done, she went and picked the classic, over the top ballad “Hero” by Mariah Carey for them to sing. I was rooting for “All by myself” by Celine Dion but “Hero” would have to do. The girls both teared it a new one, there were slow waves to the crowd, heel flicks, tears, begging and pearl clutching but in the end it was decreed that Danni over sung it best.
Keith decided that Jimmy and Glen “I am Maximus Decimus Meridius” should go head to head. He picked a fairly sedate song in “Plans” by Birds of Tokyo for these two manly men to sing. I have to say I LOVED Jimmy from the get go, he excites me. His voice is pure rock, I mean proper “Bon Scott concrete balls” rock. As Glen pointed out, Jimmy seems to have no ceiling on his voice. Glen was nice, and sounded great but it was all about Jimmy. He is already an early favourite of mine. I hope Keith just gives him BOOMING songs to sing from here on in. Oh, Jimmy got picked.
Team Joel’s turn again and he gave us Laura Vs Mali-Koa. Joel showed the girls how to sing a shocking note well. He said that if you have “passion pitch” “perfect pitch” doesn’t matter … Okaaaaaay. There was some un-sanctioned speaking from Beni which Joel QUICKLY put a stop to. I suspect they will have words about it later as well. The girls took to the stage and cranked out the Four Non Blondes track: “What’s going on.” Laura was picked as the victor, this was about the only decision I disagreed with tonight. I thought Mali was a far better singer. On another note: Laura is obviously a massive fan of Kate Bush, which is great but I think there is a fine line between paying homage and flat out impersonating someone. I think Laura strayed into the latter territory at times.
Finally the moment we’d all been waiting for.. Could guy Sebastian’s brother mark his own territory, carve his own niche, make his own mark, find his own way, own his own own? COULD HE? Yes, yes it seems he very much could. Chris Sebastian and the softly spoken Yshrael were given the ridiculous task of singing Katy Perry’s “Firework” by Seal. Not that I am questioning our leader, OK I am. What a stupid-face song choice for 2 blokes, I’ve heard Katy Perry sing it live and she could barely do it. Both of them struggled, it’s just that Chris struggled less. He really does sound like Guy though so I DO wonder how he will FIND HIS OWN place in the Australian pop music landscape. He and Guy could always start a boy band and call it Guy squared … What? Too far?
I will be live tweeting again next week (catch me here) so until then my cherubs, be well.

I’m loving watching this show too! I thought they got it wrong on a few calls last night. I loved Paula’s voice and thought it would probably be a bit more versatile than Karise’s.
On another note it keeps annoying me so much that Prinnie was in Australian Idol and it never gets mentioned ( I think she made the semi final in season 2). If you look her up on Youtube you’ll see that she has put out a few video clips. Which are basically her looking very much like Beyonce and wearing very little clothing! I think Joel definitely chose style over substance!
loading...
so THAT”S where I’ve heard her name before!
loading...
It’s true she was on Idol, my season in fact. Prinnie has been working for this her entire life. She has never stopped believing or producing music, I am so proud of her and wish her every success. Thanks for reading the post, Em. x
loading...
Totally agree about Paula and Karise
loading...
Joel Madden looks like he’d like to give Prinnie a few private tutorials!
loading...
Lots of people commenting about how Prinnie is the whole package today, and true enough, she LOOKED the goods. Those legs!
As an observation, for Mahalia’s last 2 performances she has been wearing kaftan style dresses, which don’t seem to flatter her figure.
In the packages they showed of them in rehearsal, she was wearing a top & pants, which looked far more flattering. Showed her fabulous waist and curves.
I know it’s apparently all about ‘the voice’, and I’m not suggesting for a minute she should have worn hotpants & strutted a’la Prinnie (who worked it!), or that she is not gorgeous (she’s stunning!), but since Joel said it was “all about tonight’s overall performance”, I think a different look would have gotten her over the line.
Such a shame, because she’s a powerhouse!
loading...
The Voice is much more about performance than a show like Idol ever was. It’s not enough to just stand there and belt a song out. Prinnie can perform for an audience, Mahalia didn’t even attempt to.
loading...
I watched it for the first time last night just to see what all the hype was about (not into singing shows) and cos my bf wasn’t home (he hates reality tv) and I really enjoyed it. The singers are really really good and the judges are really nice – I can see why all the girls love Kieth, Joel and Seal – I haven’t decided which one’s my fave yet. Keith does seem like a real sweetie, All I could do was feel sad for Heidi when I saw Seal and Joel and Benji are a loft softer than their bad boy image suggests..
Prinnie was totally hot – I think all the guys had a hard on when she came out in those shorts, Killer legs! She looked so much like Beyonce. I agree re Chris and Ben, Ben was heaps better and Chris just wanted to show off his powerful voice. Don’t know the names of everyone yet but looking forward to the next one!
loading...
Am probably the only person who watches the Voice with this opinion but I’m not a massive fan of Rachael ‘Palindrome’ Leahcar’s voice…Yes she can sing but I don’t get the whole ‘goosebumps’ thing everyone else is feeling
*runs away before getting slammed*
loading...
I was saying the same thing to my friend on fb last night. I don’t hate her; I just don’t get it. I mean, yeah, she has a pretty voice and can carry a tune but she’s not all that. I also take issue with the way that the main focus is on her blindness and not her voice. At first, it was a really clever (albeit, obvious) parallel to make with the blind auditions and OMG! she’s blind but come on, there are other contestants on this show!!
There was an article on her in Who magazine a week or so ago and it actually made me dislike her because she came across as a shameless self-promoter; like Kim Kardashian without the sex tape. I don’t mind if magazines are interviewing all of the contestants and printing a “these are the ones to watch”-type article, but giving her a 4-page spread is unbalanced and unfair to the other – and in my mind, more talented – contestants on the show.
Okay, rant over!!
loading...
Yes, thank you! Someone who thinks the same way as me!
And wow, didn’t know about that article in Who, that’s really not right. Imagine if Mahalia or Guy Sebastian’s brother had all that publicity (well, Mahalia kind of did but I don’t think she got a 4 page spread!) – everyone would be up in arms about it!
loading...
Exactly!! Mahalia Barnes and Chris Sebastian’s famous family members have only been mentioned in the show and commercials as an attempt to get viewers – not in magazine articles, and for that reason, I respect them more as people. Let’s hear it for people who don’t sell out!!

As soon as I saw Adam was paired with Rachel, I knew it would take a miracle for him to win the battle. Delta had made her choice long before the battle round had even begun – and I don’t think that decision was based solely on Rachel’s singing ability! Poor Adam!
loading...
I’m glad Seal chose Adam.
loading...
Me too, Adam was so, so lovely. I do think Rachel was better on the night but I don’t think Delta even gave him a chance pairing them together. It was obvious that she was going to choose her “angel”/ “shooting star”. I think he had a lot of potential… she should have paired him with one of her weaker contestants (let’s face it, she has a few) and really let them battle for the spot. This was a cop-out.
loading...
Sarah, you are so welcome to have this opinion. It excites me when people have their own opinions without fear, hold you head up lady! Thanks for reading the post, Em. x
loading...
I agree 100%. I’ll probably get hate for saying this, but if she wasn’t blind I doubt she would have made it through the auditions. She is quite an average singer, nothing special or memorable, and has a pretty small range. I really think that Delta chose the song to favour Rachael’s voice and I’m sure she was quite aware of how much backlash she would have recieved had she chosen to eliminate her instead of Adam (who is clearly the better singer, tbh). Doing so, Delta has left it up to the Australian public to determine her fate in the live shows, which I think is probably a strategic move.
loading...
I didn’t like her singing last night – no goosebumps for me, although I really enjoyed her audition. I think the other guy should have gotten it!
loading...
Wow, I hadn’t got the palindrome thing until you mentioned it. Does that mean it’s not her real name? (At the risk of appearing dopey for asking that question!)
loading...
I still don’t get the palindrome thing.
What does it mean??
loading...
A palindrome is a word that is spelled the same both forwards and backwards e.g. kayak.
Her name is Rachael Leahcar which is spelled the same when you write it backwards.
loading...
The top 3 performances last night were definitely Mahalia v. Prinnie (“Tainted Love” – an excellent choice, in my opinion), Fatai v. Mitchell (“Love The Way You Lie” – seemed to come out of nowhere) and Karise v. Paula (“Back To Black”). There were certain pairings where the winner was clear from the get-go, like Glenn v. Matty and Rachael v. Adam, and to a lesser extent Karise v. Paula.
While I loved, LOVED Mahalia v. Prinnie, I can’t help but think that Mahalia’s chances were dead in the water – despite her talent – when she came out wearing a muumuu; especially when we met Prinnie’s legs in those teeny shorts.
I really do hope that they have a Wildcard Round and bring Mahalia back because she’s amazing.
loading...
Agree about Prinnie & Mahalia.
Not saying it’s right, just saying I reckon it changed the dynamic hugely.
loading...
Prinnie & Mahalia both over sang the song, turned it into a screaming match. I thought Mahalia looked lovely, dressed to suit her figure, she’s obviously comfortable dressed like that. It’s called the Voice, isn’t about the voice, not what you look like? If it’s about how they dress, how in hell did chris sebastian win last night?
loading...
I’m loving The Voice. Honestly have never made the time to sit on the couch and watch a talent show, but this one – definitely!
Mitchell was amazing I thought. What a big loss for the competition. He had the smoothest voice, I could listen to him sign any time!
I’m not really understanding the whole ‘mentor’ thing though. Why are they there? To help the contestants or the coaches? Pairing Ricki Lee with Seal seems weird in any event to me.
My husband’s man-crush on Keith increases every episode. It’s hilarious.
loading...
Thanks Katrina! It helps that I am passionate about the subject matter. Em x
loading...
Em, you are a cracker! I was in hysterics reading your tweets while watching.
Hope to see more articles from you. Love your work.
loading...
I loved the show last night! I think the judges all chose the right people in the end. I was a bit disappointed in the judges’ song choices though, e.g. that one from Keith for Abby and Adam, Delta’s ‘Moves like Jagger’ for the two look-alike guys and Joel’s ‘Tainted Love’ for Prinnie and Mahalia. There has to be better songs to showcase these amazing singers’ range!
The judges still intrigue me: Seal’s charisma (and how damn fine he looks in a T-shirt), Delta’s ridiculously good looks, Joel’s wit and his bond with brother Benji and Keith’s wisdom and spot on comments. Bring on tonight!
loading...
I don’t watch this but I did catch Mahalia and Prinnie. I am a huge fan of EJ Barnes (who was holding Mahalia’s baby) and I’ve seen Mahalia live a few times, she can work anything from rock to soul to pop, and I hope she gets a huge contract out of this exposure.
Was it just me, or did they take all the great hooks out of Tainted Love and turn it into jazzy muzak?
loading...
“Delta’s “angel” Rachael who stunned Australia the week before with her rendition of La Vie en Rose was up next against some poor dude” – first of all Em, that ‘poor dude’ has a name – Adam Hoek and I think that he has an incredible voice. However, you are right – he was dead in the water because there is no way that the ‘legally blind’ angel was not going to go through. She does have a lovely voice and she looks beautiful AND there is the ratings factor of her ‘disability’ thrown in as well. Sad but true. Adam was gracious and as I said – I love his voice.
I also thought that there is no way that Delta wouldn’t choose her old backup singer Glenn. I thought the battle between Glenn and Matty was very very close.
loading...
You’re right I should have written the poor dudes name but it was 11:30pm and words were beginning to blur! He was a gentle soul that one and I thought his voice was lovely. x
loading...
It was great that Joel picked Matty. I agreed with his reasons too. Glenn was ‘mechanical’ but Matty was honest. Shame.
loading...
I reckon we are going to see a wildcard round – why else would they pit two of the best singers against each other in the first battle round night, why would Joel make that choice if the point is to get to the end with the best singers possible? Wild card for sure – well see Mahalia back…I hope. Btw, was anyone else suprised how much Rachel was foxing – pretending she couldnt sing the notes in the practice session to psyche out her opponent…..harsh!
loading...
Yes, it made me go ‘off’ her a little when Rachael said that but then I guess it is a competition but I didn’t like it much because Adam Hoek seems such a genuinely nice man and can sing amazingly as well.
I really felt that their ‘battle’ was more of a duet and it showcased Rachael a little more. I wonder why he was sitting? He could have put more emotion in if he moved more? Maybe because she can’t have much movement or people moving around here as she doesn’t know where they are? I just wonder….
loading...
I totally agree. There will DEFINITELY be a wildcard round. I know that the Dutch version has one. Mahalia will be back I can feel it.. Em x
loading...
Agreed. IMO Joel would have never let Mahalia go if he didn’t know he could bring her back as a wildcard.
loading...
I felt that was completely fake – just a way to drum up a bit of suspense (“what happened to the talent she showed at the blind audition??”) for what was obviously a fait accompli. As if that dress rehearsal was the only time they heard her sing!!!
loading...
All of the contestants pull such “faces” !
Rather than convey emotion, it appears as if they are all in dire pain. I don’t like seeing people in pain.
Thanks for showing the clips of the performances. It means not having to sit through over an hour and fifteen minutes of tripe. Sometimes you appreciate the abridged version.
loading...
My husband suggested their was a lack of fibre on the backstage rider because they looked a little, ahem, backed up.
loading...
Glad you mentioned the ‘believeing in’ over use Em. I didn’t end up watching most of the show cause it was driving me insane
loading...
Am I the only one who gets as much enjoyment from Em Rusciano’s tweets and follow up breakdown of the events of the show as I do from the actual show?
I think not.
I too am addicted to The Voice…and Em!
loading...
Keep expectations low Hannah! Thanks for your kind words. Em x
loading...
Personally, I can’t see the point of trying to concentrate on Tweets and a TV show at the same time.
But I suppose that you really don’t have to concentrate that hard when watching a reality program such as this.
I actually think that it’s sad that people can’t watch TV anymore without feeling the need to know what someone else who is watching the same show is thinking. Kills the chatter in the lunchroom the next day !
loading...
Well I suppose it’s like discussing it with people while it’s happening instead of the next day. And you’re right, I can’t imagine watching it takes up much brain power!
Plus.. they can tweet on the ad breaks.
loading...
“Seal picked Karise and Paula to do battle with Amy Winehouse’s ”Back to Black”. Karise took it out easily.”
This was the only one I watched in full, & I’m not sure I agree with his choice. Both of them did a great job, but Karise’s performance was more of an Amy Winehouse voice impersonation – spookily accurate & good, but I didn’t get much sense of what her ‘own’ voice sounded like.
I was channel-surfing for the rest of it, but some of the others sounded almost off-key*, or were overplaying the performance, or both.
(* I admit I don’t have much of an ear)
loading...
I’m hooked on this show!
Karise and Paula – great battle, same with Mitchell and Fatai – she’s amazing but he did such a fantastic job. Prinnie – captivating performer – that strut and attitude, but yeah, Mahalia had the voice.
Delta’s boy battle was boring. Chris was too shouty – and as Em said, did a bit too much Auslan while singing.
Someone on Twitter noted that Seal’s jacket had built in fingerless gloves – I didn’t get a good look unfortunately!
loading...
Of COURSE Seal’s jacket had built in fingerless gloves!! He can do no wrong. LOVE. THE. SEAL. Em x
loading...
It was so hard to choose between Mitchell and Fatai, I thought they both sounded great.
But I was glad Ben got through over Chris. I felt Chris over sang the song a little. Which sometimes can be good, but for the type of song it was…
On an unrelated note, I loved the coaches’ performance at the beginning of the show, and I loved Delta’s dress.
And am I the only one who wants Delta to record a version of ‘Over the rainbow’ based off that like one line she sang in the package?
And I don’t know who I have a bigger crush on, Ben Hazelwood or Keith, haha
loading...
Keith baby, Keith all the way! Em x
loading...
Love the Voice! Prinne was definitely the better performer on the night and deserved to win this round. Of course I am highly cynical about how the whole show is run. I don’t think any of the judges or mentors have much to do with the selection of who is paired with each other in battle. I think that decision is made by the producers and record executives, that is why they would pitch Prinne and Mahili against each other because it is good for ratings. Otherwise why on earth would you put two of the best against each other? In the end it will be who the record company wants in the finals and unfortunately most of them will be young and good looking because that is the sort of artist they like to sell to the public and who can make money for them
loading...
I think Prinnie sings every bit as well as Mahalia, so for me it came down to a 50:50 choice. No right or wrong. Having said that (and I know it’s got nothing to do with it) if Mahalia, with her music connections (and killer voice) hasn’t already “made it” then perhaps that’s the reason why someone less known like Prinnie is the better choice.
Agree about Chris and Ben..OMG that Chris was just too try-hard and shouty..but honestly lost me at “alpha male” ..I mean who actually says that?!!! And Ben has the voice of an angel! Beautiful light and shade.Sublime.
The tragedy of night was having to choose between Mitchell and Fatai. My God those two can sing! I hope there’s a wildcard. It’s a travesty that Mitchell is out ..I’d like to give some of the others the flick and sub him in.
loading...
Ditto. My thoughts exactly.
loading...
This is exactly what I thought. Alpha Male indeed! I think Chris has an amazing voice and you could tell he wanted it BUT he did over sing/act. Ben was amazing.
Fatai and Mitchell – well, I wanted BOTH to win – loved that whole performance. It was beautiful.
loading...
I totally agree. Especially re. Chris – it was like he only has his ‘I’m singing now, look at me look at me’ moves and the actual song was irrelevant. No nuance, just bull-at-a-gate musical theatre-esque showmanship. Then young Ben, bless his heart, started so vulnerable and nervous and built to that shiver-inducing climax. Hands down winner for me.
loading...
I agree too!
I also wondered about Mahalia, but I don’t know her full story so maybe there is something in that that has held her back. I so hope the talk of a wild card round is right so we can see her again!
The alpha male comment was a strange combination of hilarious and sad to me – I think one type of person uses that term: an alpha male! Ben WAS sublime though and am so gald he got through.
OMG I NEED to own a copy of Fatai and Mitchell’s battle – by far, my fave of the night! :>
loading...
The whole ‘believing” thing really got to me by the end. I felt a bit disappointed with the battles, it seemed the actual voice was only part of the consideration. Very sad Mitchell wasn’t chosen, he killed it. Also Mahalia is The Voice. Disappointed.
loading...
It’s a shame but the whole “voice”thing seems to be only at the beginning. I guess in the end it will be about who can sell songs for the record company and who they would prefer in the finals
loading...
Im with the smallest minority when I say the right decision was made by Joel. Mahalia Is a wonderful singer and she sung well, however – I felt that Prinnie did an amazing job in making a rock and roll song feel a bit RNB. She was the better performer, the coaches kept saying that they had to engage the audience, and I felt Prinnie did that better than MB.
But there were two stand out performers for me, Mitchell was amazing and I can’t help but feel that he will be a star even though he lost his battle. Also Ben, he was amazing I had tears and goosebumps. I think he will learn so much and am looking forward to seeing him in the live shows!
loading...
Prinni dressed and acted like a star, MB wore a moo moo which kept ne thinking ‘homer simson’ im sorry but Prinni smashed her in the battle
loading...
What a fabulous summary! Love your writing Em!
loading...
I generally hate a singing reality show, but I love this (even my husband does, but he’d never admit it- he pretends he’s not watching…)
I couldn’t believe how much Mahalia looked like her dad, sounded like her dad and even moved like her dad.
I have now put my mother’s day present request in, I would like legs like Prinnie….
loading...
Thanks for the update! I must have been the only person in the country watching the ABC 4 Corners last night
Spectacularly single focus piece on Mitt Romney. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of dodgy religion, but if I were an American voter, I’m not sure if I’d be much the wiser about him after this Morman bashing program. Odd to see such a one-noter from the BBC.
loading...
I actually watched 4Corners too and TiVo’d The Voice so I can discuss BOTH shows
loading...
Mahalia was the better singer, Prinnie was the better performer, but like you said, it’s called “The VOICE” so I was a bit surprised that Mahalia didn’t get through. Benji kept saying to Joel in their ‘consultation’ that Mahalia could sing way better than Prinnie ever could. But it was a really tough choice.
AND Mitchell and Fatai! WOW! Not gonna lie, I loved their performance so much there were tears, I wish both of them could have gone through.
I could go on and on about this, but those were the two best battles. Oh and that last battle of Team Keith? Pathetic, neither deserved to go through based on that performance.
loading...
I have not enjoyed tv this much in long time. Love Keith Urban hes so sweet and honest . My five year old says Delta is his fav and calls her a Princess and says shes sooo beudiful.
Thought Mahalia was the better singer of her battle and would have picked Mitchell over Fatai his voice was amazing.
The Madden bros are very interesting to watch not so sure how i feel about Seal but cant wait for tonight .
loading...
You are right Em, Chris did kill Only Exception…literally.
I found his part awful to watch, he was shouty, and basically wanted to sing “look at me! Look at me!”
The whole point of that song is the softness in her voice and the way she conveys the message about love and tenderness, her soft angelic tones is what captures you from the moment she starts singing. Both struggled to do it as per the song but Ben executed it far better than Chris. Chris was too worried about being macho and shouting his way through the song, we know he can sing but it’s not just about singing anymore. Personally I felt his egotistical alpha male presence too much and was so glad he didn’t get through.
Ben was far better than Chris…
loading...
Completely agree with everything you said here! Chris came across as so arrogant that he missed the whole point of the song.
loading...
“Not a leopard skin rug or Sphinx statue in sight.”
This is utterly hilarious. I love your writing Em. I was totally on Team Ben BUT agree, what the hell, Mahalia deserved that spot.
loading...
I’m really upset that Mahalia didn’t get through. Joel (I’m sorry to say this) has gone down in my rock-god books. WHY oh why did he have to chose that song for the girls and you know, Mahalia just didn’t have anything to go with and Prinnie got the best lines. I was disappointed!!
loading...
Prinnie was my preferred choice. They both have great voices but she brought the song alive for me.
loading...
The only decision I was a bit disappointed with was that Seal didn’t choose Mitchell. I really thought he did a better job than Fatai…but she was great so it was a tough call. Bring on tonight!
loading...
Same! Thought Mitchell was awesome(r)
loading...
I agree too. They were both great but I felt that Mitchell was the better voice – but only slightly!
loading...
I think they vibed off each other and I’m not sure either would have beenas good on their own as they were together. They lifted each others performance. It was beautiful and I thInk Mitchell Will be back for the wildcard!
loading...
Completely agree! I thought Mitchell was the clear winner. I thought Fatai looked constipated, not emotional.
loading...
Who put Mahalia in the circus tent mumu ? Bad choice especially up against Prinnie. Probably would have won had she dressed even remotely like a ‘star’. Any one else think he chose that song so Mahalia couldn’t show off her superior singing ?
loading...
She wore a similar thing in her audition so I’m guessing it was her choice? I agree though, Prinnie looked absolutely gorgeous but not many people could get away with that outfit. Mahalia probably felt more comfortable in the mumu.
loading...
That is actually one of the things I really like; that they’re allowed to keep their own style.
loading...
Couldnt believe it – Joel Madden chosing a D grade version of beyonce over Mahalia Barnes
loading...
I could not agree more – Benji said it best when he told Joel that there were at least three times during that song when Mahalia hit notes that Prinnie never could – so much for ‘the voice.’ I do not want to be harsh, but Prinnie was selling something last nght that was not about her voice and I was really disappointed that the best singer didn’t get through. It was the focus on finding great voices that sucked me in to this show when I have not really watched any other reality/talent programs, so this left me feeling a lttle turned off. really.
loading...
But – the real world, the best voice doesn’t always get the gig (or the fame). Every single person on this show probably has a better singing voice than Madonna or Kylie Minogue (ready to duck right about now), but these two show you don’t necessarily *need* an amazing voice. What you do need are a strong identity and a lot of luck and a performance! And a great songwriter, too, no doubt.
loading...
I was so upset that Seal paired Paula and Karise – they were my 2 favourites from the blind rounds
such a shame Paula’s amazing tone got lost in her trying to sound like Amy Winehouse instead of letting her own voice through.
Am I the only person in the country who actually prefers Prinnie’s voice over Mahalia’s? Don’t get me wrong, Mahalia can wail, but that’s the issue. I find her voice has crazy range and flexibility but her tone doesn’t appeal to me. The fulless and warmth of Prinnie’s voice is much more appealing, not to mention the fact that she put it all out there for the performance – not just her look but her stage presence – she worked the camera, strutted her stuff. I felt like MB just came out (in a mumu! with no bra?) and dialled in her ‘I’ve got the biggest voice so I can just stand here and belt it out and I will win’ performance.
loading...
Yep, I liked her performance better and I do like her voice better than Mahalia’s as well. Shame to see her get kicked out though but you have to admit that Prinner is infinitely more marketable. I said the same thing to my housemate about the mumu, badddd choice!! You know Joel always chooses the hotties!!

The judges should be careful to not put 2 top singers up against each other. I was sad to see the gorgeous Mitchell leave, he was great! Hope there is some wild card 2nd chance at the end, I want him back! Love the show!!

Mitchell’s voice is what got me hooked on the show. It’s so honest and he doesn’t rely on tricks or complicated runs. I have been listening to his YouTube videos all week (mitchellthompsonmusic) and he sounds beautiful just singing in his bedroom with a guitar. I could listen to him all day and I’m so disappointed he wasn’t picked.

I have become obsessed with this show. I loved last night’s episode and I love Em’s analysis, great writing!
I thought Ben did much better than Chris singing ‘The only exception.’ There’s no doubt that Chris has an amazing voice, but it seemed like he was just belting out the song without tapping into the meaning of the lyrics or the emotion behind it. Then again, maybe I’m just biased against him because he self-identified as an ‘alpha male’ which always sets off red flags and alarm bells.
Mitchell and Fatai were fantastic, very sad to see Mitchell go! Fatai really has something special though, amazing for a 16 year old.
It was odd seeing Ricki-Lee as a ‘mentor’ to Seal. More like a sidekick. I love Seal, but if I had a voice and the choice between all of the judges, I think I’d have to choose team Keith.

is ricki-lee a mentor to seal though or to the group. The only case where the mentor would have greater experience then the coach in my opinion would be darren and delta

I thought it was because Ricky knows reality singing shows

I am totally in love with Keith Urban! I never thought I would utter those words…
How good were the judges at singing One??? Amazing! Keith’s voice is unreal too. Love love love this show!!!

You realise that they pre record the judges Song ? Very diss appointing that t Don’t sing live :/

all of the battle rounds shows are pre-recorded, all the singers. Do you mean that the judges didn’t sing in front of an audience? I missed the start last night and have just seen highlights if their song.

Wow, so they’re that bad even pre-recorded? Most of the singing was off-tune and they sound awful together. Mind you, at least it was better than their car crash of a performance on episode one.
