The red carpet may have been a little dull (check it all out here) but these 8 controversies more than made up for it…
1. Was Renee Zellweger drunk? While presenting the award for Best Original Score with her old “Chicago” co-stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah, the “Bridget Jones’ Diary” actress’s eyes appeared oddly unfocused and swayed visibly on stage.
She also struggled to read out the name of the winner in the category, after Gere presented her with the envelope.
On a positive note, Zellweger looked stunning – and a little bit like an Oscar herself – in a shining gold Carolina Herrera gown.
2. Jennifer Lawrence falling over.
The 22-year-old may have tripped on the hem of her dress as she took to the stage to accept the award for Best Actress for her role in “Silver Linings Playbook”, but she recovered admirably.
J-Law said later backstage that when she fell she was thinking, “A bad word that I can’t say that begins with ‘f’”, but after hanging her head and taking only a moment to compose herself, she rose to her feet.
After the ever-chivalrous Hugh Jackman (who else) rushed forward to help her, Lawrence climbed the stairs without any further mishaps. In her self-effacing acceptance speech, she said:
“Thank you. You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell and that’s really embarrassing but thank you.”
Check out the dress that made Jennifer Lawrence trip, as well as all the other celebrity frocks, below:

3. You HAVE to watch this video of Jack Nicholson (75-years-old) hitting on Jennifer Lawrence (22-years-old) while she’s being interviewed after the Oscars. How he interrupts, how she reacts, everything … just incredible. Watch it here.
4. Ben Affleck’s comments about his marriage to Jennifer Garner.
After being passed over for a Best Director nomination, actor and director Ben Affleck gave an understandably emotional speech when “Argo” won Best Picture.
What wasn’t expected was what Affleck said next:
“I want to thank my wife for working on our marriage for 10 Christmases… It’s good … it IS work, but it’s the best kind of work … and there’s no one I’d rather work with.”
The camera then cut to Jennifer Garner, 40, with tears in her eyes that may have been happy or sad. Not sure.

6. Seth McFarlane’s jokes about boobs and domestic violence.
McFarlane, 39 – the creator and voice of Family Guy and the movie, Ted – sung a song about woman’s breasts being bared in films, he joked about the prospect of 9-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis dating George Clooney, and he said that Ben Affleck with a beard looked like a Kardashian (implying that all the dark-haired Kardashian women had facial hair).
But the most controversial “joke” from his repertoire occurred minutes into the Oscars night, when McFarlane said about film “Django Unchained”:
“This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.”
The audience gasped.
After the joke fell flat, McFarlane assured the audience, “That’s as bad as it gets, if it makes you feel better,” before admitting, “It’s really not as bad as it gets.”
His performance left many asking: why can Amy Poehler and Tina Fey host everything?

My beard tastes like winning.

I thought that Twilight chick was stoned or something?

I think the crack about Jews running Hollywood in the Ted/Mark Wahlburg segment was anti-Semitic.

Love Hugh Jackman. Best part of Jennifer Lawrence’s tumble (which she did oh so beautifully) was him leaping to his feet to help her. It was so chivalrous

I did’t see it but Renee Z probably hadn’t eaten for days!

Jack hitting on Jennifer? Ewwww. Unsurprising but still ewwwww.

What’s unexpected about Ben’s speech? Most couples who have been married ten plus years would attest to all of that! Happy tears I bet.

Loved the quote from an entertainment correspondent I saw on TV talking about Jennifer Lawrence falling – ‘yes, she fell. But she fell wearing her Dior couture gown on the way to collect her Oscar….’. Still a winner!
loading...
AND she even fell in an elegant way! What a gorgeous pose she held as she composed herself!
A true star for one so young.

I actually thought Ben Affleck’s comments were great. Marriage DOES take work and it’s obvious that he knows how lucky he is to have her!! They are a great couple and Jennifer looked gorgeous.

Ah, yeah but that marriage would be hard work with his alleged infidelity (ask his ex co-star Mrs Reyolds about that) is one of Hollywood’s worst-kept secrets. If I were JG, I’d tear up too after what I’d put up with.

Seth MacFarlane was smashing!! He was funny, witty and charming. What a very talented young man he is family guy, clevland show, American dad, simpson, futurama. Actor, creator, director, singer and voice over man. He has his finger in every pie and it shows. I think he did a brilliant job…no laughing to soon here!! (ps I love that he stuck it to Rhianna and Chris Brown, the need a reality check)!!!

Ben is also a co-producer for Argo – get it right before bagging him
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1024648/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm#cast
Other points from his speech:
- Interesting the feeling of joy for him amongst the audience after not getting nominated as a director
- His recognition of Speilberg who had missed out on directors oscar to Ang Lee
- The way he finished his speech referring to the fact he was there many years ago (perhaps he could have referred to Matt Damon here) and how he talked about not how many times you get knocked down but it is how you get back up again that counts
- similarties to last oscars speech (he clearly gets a bit excited up there)

Where was Ben ‘bagged’? As far as I can tell, it just says his talk about marriage being work was ‘unexpected’. Hardly a bagging…
Also Ben was blackboard monitor in Year 4. I think that should be mentioned too.

I think what Shannon was referring to was Mamamia refering that Ben wasn’t a producer and it was unusual that he got to speak as the director, but I think they must not have known that he was a producer.

I LOVED Jennifer Lawrence’s reaction to Jack Nicholson hitting on her. She was so obviously startstruck as hell, it was so sweet that she didn’t act all cool and collected. ‘Is he still here?’ Awesome!
loading...
Ben actually WAS a producer on the film which was why he was given the opportunity to speak.
loading...
That’s what I said a few comments below, I dont know how Mamamia thinks he wasn’t. Grant Heslov the producer that spoke first said it in his speech so even if people wern’t aware that Ben was a producer Mamamia would have known if they watched the whole speech. Wierd… Ben deserved every award he got for that movie!

At least Jennifer Lawrence had that doona on to break her fall.

Ben Affleck was a producer as well as a director on Argo. So he had every right to make a speech. If you listen to the first producer speak you will hear him say that he was honoured to co-produce with both George and Ben!

Every time I see Hugh Jackman do anything, I love him a little bit more! LOL. I was disappointed but not surprised he didn’t win. When the Academy chooses the winners, and they have a choice between a French convict and one of the greatest president’s in US history (if I know anything of American culture, I’m pretty sure he’s up there on the list with the US public/historians/whatever), are they really going to go with the the convict?

Daniel Day-Lewis is one the most talented actors to ever live. It is not by accident that he is the first male actor to win an academy award in a lead role 3 times. It has nothing to do with the American Academy having a bias towards an American icon like Lincoln. And I say that as someone who is very cynical about the Oscars in general but last night they got it 100% right in choosing DDL.

um why show a video of Ben’s speech that doesn’t show the quote that you talked about?
