The first time I heard of Taylor Swift, someone described her as “America’s Delta Goodrem.”
Without getting into a Delta v Taylor debate, I can kind of see where they were coming from. It’s the wholesome quality. The honest songs. Oh, and the fact that neither of them have ever taken their gear off to sell a record.
Know what I mean?
The 22 year old is in Australia and a few weeks ago she spoke to radio hosts Fifi and Jules. She blew me away with her honesty and her very down-to-earth approach to life.
When Fifi asked Taylor about if she’ll ever ‘write dark songs, dance in her underwear and get her gear off like other performers in her era’, Taylor’s answer was (mind the cliche) wise beyond her years. She answered:
“I’ve just always noticed that there are just certain trends that kind of happen especially with young stars and young performers who reach this age of 22. There’s always this kind of declaration of ‘I’m a woman now’ and they change themselves so much sometimes that their fans no longer recognise them. And I don’t want to ever have that happen where I decide that I’m a different person an everybody’s supposed to scramble and like this new person instead of who they’ve liked for the past six years that I’ve been putting out records.”
And on the question of whether anyone has ever asked her to “raunch it up?” she said:
“No because everyone around me knows that’s not what I’m about. Overall, I feel like your image comes from you. And what you want to do and you can make your decisions yourself and it’s not about a committee telling you what to wear I think that if they want you to put on an outfit you have every right to say ‘nah not going to wear this today.”
Her comments – and general demeanor – come in pretty stark contrast to what other twenty-something singers and actors are doing to promote their image, which is more often than not something along the lines of ‘sex sells.’
Kind of like this:

Gabriella Cilme in FHM
Remember when then Gabriella Cilmi went from a cute 16 year old to ‘sexy and sophisticated’ 18 year old by posing on the cover of FHM magazine?
When Cilmi changed her image, Mamamia publisher Mia Freedman wrote about how Gabriella Cilmi 2.0 had lost everything that had made her appealing before. Here’s some of what Mia had to say:
Everything that was unique and fresh about Gabriella Cilmi’s look and sound and story has been sacrificed for a push-up bra and suspenders (does anyone actually wear suspenders in real life other than strippers or maybe the prostitutes in Underbelly? ANYONE?)I don’t know who is managing Gabriella Cilmi but I would respectfully suggest they change their approach immediately. With this current strategy – which seems to be encapsulated in GET-HER-GEAR-OFF-FAST-PHWOOOAAARRRR, she’s become just another girl in undies. Just another girl getting her bra out and lying around in a wet t-shirt.
If you’re a reality TV star, grasping at the fading moments of your 15 minutes of fame, that’s one thing.
But what a damn waste for an artist who has, inarguably, TREMENDOUS talent. My hope is that this is merely a misstep and that the record company will allow her to put her clothes back on for her next album.
Or that she finds management who understand that there are women who can be respected and rewarded for their talent without taking off their clothes.
Or that she finds management who understand that there are women who can be respected and rewarded for their talent without taking off their clothes.
Artists like Missy Higgins, Lisa Mitchell, Natalie Imbruglia, Delta Goodrem and Julia Stone have proven that you can be a successful female artist without having to get your gear off.
And to those commenters who are going to preach “Don’t judge, she’s just a girl etc”? I’m not apologising for my judgement on this one. It’s called critical thought actually. I’m not judging Gabriella Cilmi’s voice or her talent.
And I’m certainly not judging the kind of person she is. What would I know about that?
I’m judging a lousy, sexist decision taken by whoever it was who chose to market this talented chick in a demeaning, tacky way.
I agree. 100%. Which is why I think it’s so fantastic to see someone like Taylor Swift taking a it to those record execs and proving that overt sex appeal is not the only way to sell your songs on iTunes.

Taylor Swift as a brunette

I used to listen to Taylor Swift when I was 16 until her songs started turning out repetitive and recycled. Her getting into the feminism business was a pretty blind step in the mud though. She doesn’t seem to be fighting for anything concrete as a feminist and it doesn’t seem like she’s getting anywhere from where she stands in the feminist universe. Not the best move, tbh. Especially when she’s reinforcing moral values from which other girls that don’t turn out to be a Taylor Swift are unfairly judged, and this, in turn, objectifies sluttiness.
With all due honesty, the only way Taylor can win me over right now is if she started doing porn. Not only will that be groundbreaking, it will also affirm her femininity and get her somewhere in the feminist world. Other than that, she’s turning out to be a flash in the pan raising another generation of ignorant little girls.

How refreshing to see a beautiful young girl with morals, self respect and a brain. LOVE IT!
Good on you Taylor, hopefully many teenage girls are taking note and aspiring to be just like you.
Makes a nice change from the likes of Miley, Britney, and all the Kardashians!!
Taylor Swift what a great role model you are… and please never change!

Oh, she’s so, so lovely. I love everything about her.
Except her music. Can’t stand that. I understand it’s very good and it’s all hers and it’s very honest, but I can’t do country.

Um…read Mamamia?

Taylor will always be my favorite. Such a talented musician. I love her so much, she’s the best role model, amazing girl <3

I’m soooo tired of the ‘don’t judge the naughty girls’ line – I have three young girls who are starting to become very aware of the music they listen to and the images they absorb on TV, and I HAVE to watch and listen with a judgemental eye and ear. I have come down firmly in favour of Taylor – she’s talented, she plays multiple instruments, she writes her own songs, she is in control of her image and she is true to her values. And if you ever see her interviewed live she’s FUNNY as hell. What’s not to like?
We listen to Adele as well, and my girls are in love with her beautiful face and fabulous voice. You can’t compare Taylor with Adele musically – two very different voices and styles – but there is something similar in the way that both women are in charge of their own careers and success.
If either of them ends up on a NW cover looking messy and heading for rehab I’ll eat my hat.
loading...
Totally agree- there are awesome similarities. I love girls who prove that you can still sing with clothes on. Go Taylor, Adele, Delta and any others who are going against the tart me up trend.

She is just divine.

My 11 year old sister has really liked her for a few years. At first I had the typical, “oh an annoying teenage singer” reaction, but then I actually bothered to think about it and realised that I’m glad my sister admires her. Apart from avoiding the overly sexualised image, I like that Taylor Swift is constantly making appearances PLAYING A GUITAR. Since my sister’s interested in music, I’m glad she’s getting exposed to a girl who plays an instrument, writes her own songs and isn’t just a pretty face.

cannot stand taylor swift. her life seems to revolve around boys and she basically stands there in her white dress wagging her finger condescendingly while telling teenage girls what to do with their sex lives. i’m 17 years old, and you know what Taylor, sometimes we want to kiss boys for fun and not just wait for a Prince Charming. thankyou goodnight.

You know, for someone who thinks others shouldn’t judge you seem to be awfully judging of those who make different choices to you. There are plenty of female artists out there telling you to go off and have fun and by all means, go for it. But that doesn’t mean there are also girls who aren’t like that and relate more to Taylor Swift. That is fine too.

This is when I fell in love with her!!

Hmmm, Taylor Swift makes me uncomfortable. She’s always been “oh, look at me, in my white dress. I’m so wholesome. Your girlfriend wears tight clothing therefore she’s a slut and I’m sooo much bettter because I’m all cute a innocent like”
Women should never be treated as objects and particularly not sexual toys but nor should we allow one ideal, in Taylor’s case being wholesome, over another, for example not being wholesome and choosing too embrace our sexuality. Taylor seems to demean girls whom do not conform her ideals and I don’t like it at all.

Don’t remember (and I’d love you to show examples of ) Taylor making judgement on others. She just does what she does. I love it, I’m 45. My daughter loves her, she’s 11. I think you’ve made it up to feel better about yourself
loading...
Also my hubby took my daughter to see Taylor last week. Can’t say I’d ever let her see Miley, Pink or Katy. $ they won’t get from us because if I want her to see strippers it’s SO much cheaper in the valley. Love their talent but just don’t take me daughter. Glad there is a concert I can take her to like ‘Sherbet’ for me when I was her age. Live music is the best!
loading...
We saw her on Saturday night and she rocked in every way. Unexpectedly one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Fantastic well balanced performance and someone girls can look up to.
loading...
I went to her concert 2 years ago and it was awful, she couldn’t sing at all and she was so fake. Really regretted going because i previously adored her
loading...
Pink? Really? Pink is AGAINST all the stripper stuff- download her song ‘Stupid Girls’ to quote “I’m so proud that I’ll never fit in, that will never be me. Outcasts and girls with ambition, that’s what I want to see”
She’s an amazing role model and I’ve always looked up to her throughout my teens
loading...
“She wears short shorts, I wear tshirts”
:. You should be with me because she’s a big slutty cheerleader and not good enough for you.
loading...
Wow, one line out of a whole song and you’ve made up your mind.
If you listen to the whole song you will probably see the way it is used in context is about the character being a little bit ‘dorky and unpopular’ and not actually making judgements about the other girls ‘sluttiness’.
loading...
Took my 10 year old daughter to see Taylor Swift when she was in Perth, we both loved the concert, much better than the Miley Cryus one last year.

isnt that vogue cover just AMAZING!!

My ten year old is off to see her tonight – along with her “chaperone Dad”!
She looks gorgeous in that Vogue cover.

Bloody hell, is that Nicky Webster as in ‘Strawberry Kisses’ Nicky Webster??? When did that happen? And for the love of god WHY?
Am now officially over the hill and lamenting the “youth of today” … at 29. = (

don’t worry, i’m 21 and lamenting the youth of today haha. shocking.

I wholeheartedly agree! And I’m only a month away from becoming 18! What has happened to humanity? D:
As for Nicki Webster… haha, don’t even get me started…

I love Taylor Swift.
Her music is okay, but what I like about her is her demeanor and the way she carries her self. Ive seen her do a few interviews and she is always polite, genuine, honest and fresh.
She was fantastic on Ellen recently – in the face of questioning about boyfriends and when she had tea with Sophia and Rosie
loading...
I’m a recent Taylor Swift convert. After seeing some interviews with her I think she is an intelligent, funny, talented young woman.
I think she is a great role model for young girls, I like that she travels with her friends and family, I like that as far as I’ve seen, her private life seems private.
It’s so nice to see people like Taylor & Adele being so popular and remain themselves.
loading...
Nothing groundbreaking here. There have always been the bad girls and there have always been the good girls. She’s sweet and pretty enough.
loading...
I’m 21 and I’m going to Taylor’s concert tonight. I absolutely love her. Her songs may be a bit on the corny side but I don’t care – I love singing along in the car, they’re such sweet, fun songs. Having seen her in concert last time she was here I can testify to her putting on an amazing show, the girl can definitely perform! I love that she hasn’t felt the need to lose the good girl label like so many other young women in the spotlight feel the need to…if I had kids, I’d gladly let them listen to her music.
loading...
I’m a little bit jealous of you tonight. Enjoy

+ 1.

I’m 22 and am going tonight too. Am slightly scared at the prospect of masses of teenage girls but am still excited. Love her music.

Don’t worry, I’m a little scared to!
loading...
I’m 27 and jealous. I would have loved to see her in Sydney, but couldn’t find someone to come with me at the last minute
loading...
Good on her, I guess. Pity her music is so bland. Nothing about it stands out at all.
loading...
I don’t get why so many Talented girls and women have to prance around in underwear or bikinis while performing. Yawn, anyone can get their tits out (to be crude) and get attention. Why demean your obvious talent by appearing to be desperately trying to look sexy.
You can look super sexy in jeans and a t-shirt or a gorgeous dress and you’ll also look far more elegant and classy.
Go Taylor, you are a great example for my little girls.
loading...
I think Taylor is wasted on her tweenies / teeny-bopper audience…her song-writing is so much better than that…I’ve got a lot of time for her…I think 20 years from now, she’ll have an amazing body of work…mark my words!
loading...
Even though I’m very straight and very married, Taylor is my girl crush. I also wished I looked like her, had her talent and her wardrobe.
Maybe in another life…?

Isn’t Taylor just a darling! so sweet and always seems to be smiling!
I’m actually 23 and I wen’t to her concert in Melbourne last night, I admire how she doesn’t seem fussed by the ‘need to impress’ and she honestly seemed to be having a ball performing and just happy to be up there.
Smirky smiles and cheeky laughs all make me think that if we ever met we’d get along great!
I’m definitely in the Taylor crush crowd!
loading...
Her music is kind of cheesy but I love that my 6 and 8 year old girls can watch her clips and listen to her music without being bombarded with sexualised images and words. I would have been happy to have taken my daugters to the concert if the tickets weren’t out of our price range (approx $140 each).

I want to be Taylor Swift. I want her hair, her clothes, her voice, her attitude. I have a major major girl crush on her.

I took my daughters to the last Taylor Swift concert 2 years ago (well, they took me!), and I must say, despite the corny lyrics and similar sounding songs, she was a fantastic musician and an engaging performer. She really got in amongst her fans and seemed to genuinely love them all. She wasn’t at all prudish either. Her outfits were very ‘sexy’ (I recall a sparkly mini-dress/long boots while passionately belting out a tune and playing her guitar) but just not in that Ralph/Zoo kinda way. It was actually a nice change to see a strong, talented young performer, show her (mostly young) fans that you can still be gorgeous and ‘hot’ without baring your butt cheeks or swinging around a pole (in contrast to Brittney Spears who’s concert I also attended – only coz I had a free ticket, I swear! lol!). Needless to say, my daughters (now 13 and 10) are still Taylor Swift MAD, so we’re going to her concert again tomorrow night. I really think if her image changed, they would be disappointed. Sexed-up starlets are a dime a dozen. What they like about her is that she is different, so they don’t feel so much pressure to conform. Girls need a variety of role models.
loading...
Im sorry and I know this is areally inappropriate but those photos of Nicki Webster just make me laugh! Cant take it seriously.
On another note- LOVE TAYLOR SWIFT!
loading...
It is a good thing that wearing some clothes is not a barrier to being successful, however Taylor Swift certainly doesn’t have that corner of the market all to herself. Look At the people mentioned in the article above like Julia Stone. Another good example is Adele, who also has those wonderful curves as well, and said on 60 Minutes this week “I’m never going to be some skinny-minny with my tits hanging out”. I prefer Adeles lusciousness over the somewhat ethereal Taylor personally… As someone previously mentioned in the comments, a more innocent/tasteful apprearance does not necessarily make for a ‘good’ person and vice-versa.
loading...
I just love Taylor Swift. I love that she won’t compromise her values to sell records and it’s not like she needs the help! There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be raunchy, but I like that she has the wholesome image. I also love what she wears on Red Carpets and just in general.
I also love the honesty of her lyrics. I think she is a phenomenal lyricist and I wonder if she’d be any good at writing a book. I know I’d definitely read it.
loading...
She seems to be very down to earth and exactly the kind of role model the young ones should look up to.
Delta might have been a good comparison years ago, she’s just very Barbie-esq now and considering she signed to a new record company just give her time before her half naked body appears in magazines
loading...
LOVE Taylor Swift – her music wouldn’t ordinarily be my taste but she is hugely talented, a genuinely nice person, intelligent and mature for a 22 year old, like you say.
My 9 year old is a huge fan and we went to her concert the other night. Tickets were not cheap but it was worth every cent – she is an incredible performer and has clearly worked hard to get to where she is. She seems to genuinely care about people and her fans.
My 9 year old was totally inspired and I am more than happy for her to be inspired by an artist like Taylor Swift. Oh and I actually quite like the music now – very catchy – I’ve heard it played often enough!

I am 32 and I love Taylor Swift! I love that there are singers out there that don’t need to take their clothes off to be famous, it can be really refreshing after seeing music clip after music clip that just looks like nearly soft porn to me. Oh dear I must just be one of those annoying prudes lol
loading...
You don’t have to sex it up to be successful and that’s why Taylor Swift is the perfect role model for young girls, in particular my daughters. For me it’s not because she doesn’t dance around in a bra but because she is herself and successful at being herself.
loading...
she’s boring
loading...
Love Taylor Swift! Off to see her in Melbourne tonight, a birthday present for my 5yo daughter who adores her. Don’t really care what others think, for me she’s a decent role model for my daughter. I’d rather she listen to decent music than some of the crap that’s in the charts….
loading...
I took my 9 year old and her friend to see her on Wednesday. She was lovely. The music might not appeal to me, but I don’t think I’m the target audience (although I do love the songs that are a little bit country, and who doesn’t love a banjo?)
loading...
Taylor Swift is just the representation of the madonna in society’s madonna/whore complex. I wish society can get to a place where a woman’s sexuality, and how she chooses to express it, doesn’t define her. I’d rather hate the game (the patriarchy), than the player.
loading...
I agree so much with this!
loading...
Exactly! Adele is a better example. Way more talented in my opinion, too. I find Swift’s Madonna/Whore complex to be so irritating. Here is a great article by Marie Lyn Bernard that explains my issue with Taylor Swift and her Madonna/Whore complex and why I consider it to be anti-feminist. Ohh and I LOVE the graphic she made with regard to her analysis of Swift’s music. It can be said for a lot of singers when it comes to generic music. But it’s so well done. Love Taylor!
Love her songs, her music, her interviews, her choice of dresses..
i think shes hilarious (see multiple ellen episodes)
something refreshing to hear a young women sing her OWN songs, play her OWN insruments and music.
Also, if you do some research she worked her BUTT off to get where she is.. well done Taylor!

Every time I see those Nikki Webster photos I feel like I’m looking at child porn. I know she is grown up but she still looks so young.
Taylor Swift’s music is not to my taste, but I do respect her for making a stand about who she is and the image she wants to portray. It can’t be easy, she may say that she has never been asked to raunch it up, but my bet is that the suggestion has been there. From the outside it looks like music executives think the only thing that sells records for women is sex. She is gorgeous (maybe after Zoe’s tips I can get my curls to emulate Taylors) and it is nice to see her being gorgeous with her clothes on!
loading...
I can’t stand Taylor Swift’s songs. When I thought she was 15 I could understand them, but most of her songs are full of really petty, juvenile crap I can’t imagine any other 22 year old woman singing about. She might not want change, but her fans are going to grow up, and a new generation of teenagers probably won’t be too interested in hearing songs about mean cheerleaders sung by someone old enough to be their mum.
She seems really immature to me. She’s made such a big deal about bad mouthing her exes, in a really spiteful way. Plus all her biggest hits sound exactly the same, so even though she writes her own stuff I can’t really respect that.
I actually grew up in the same area as Delta, and she had quite a rep before she was famous. Her taste in men suggests there was some truth to it. I think it’s a mistake to assume women like Delta and Taylor are good role models just because they wear more clothing than other singers. I remember when Christina Aguilera came out with Dirrty, and here in Australia she was getting negatively compared to Delta a lot. Well if even half of what I’ve heard is true, Delta was far ‘dirtier’ than Christina. Wearing more or less clothing doesn’t make you a better person or more talented, it’s just a different aesthetic choice.
loading...
Surely the issue here is not what someone chooses to do in their private life – after all, that is their own business and so long as it is not harming anyone who are you to judge?
The article is about how she does not portray that image publicly or feel the need to prove herself to be “sexy”. She sounds like a confident young woman.
Your comment on the other hand sounds bitter and judgemental.
loading...
I respect your opinion anon but I think Taylor has been changing her image alot lately ie the hunger games song and her vogue shoot. If you listen to her new album (which she wrote and composed entirely by herself without the need for a co-writer), the songs are more mature and meaningful. I used to dislike her music too and her teeny bopper image but when I listened to her new album I found that I could relate to her songs much more. I’m 22 by the way. Maybe if you gave them a listen you would change your idea about her too. I agree with Chrissy that this is not about whether Taylor is a good person or not. No one knows what she is really like in private, she may be fake or insincere. But I admire that at least in public, she has recognised that she has a profound effect on how many teens and young adults see themselves, and she has chosen to at least reflect a positive image of women as an alternative role model to other sexed up pop stars today…and for that I admire her
loading...
I’m sure the fact that Taylor Swift’s quasi-Country music style is popular in the prudish “Bible Belt” of America has nothing to do with her decision to dress conservatively. Her image is just as marketed as the Disney “I wear a purity ring” stars.
loading...
I’m no prude, and if you want to get your kit off I have no problem with that.
I just want to say, though, there’s something far sexier about a little bit of skin, like Taylor shows in her beautiful dresses, than a whole lot. To me, sex appeal is far more about the hint.
loading...
Exactly – a hint of cleavage is a lot sexier than getting your nip-nips out.
