The music on my playlists is about as scattered as my personality. There’s everything from Paul Kelly to Paulini. It’s Coldplay one song, Mariah the next. A touch of Led Zeppelin mixed with a dash of Michael Jackson. I’m a sucker for anything Angus Stone, and Madonna will have me yelling “turn it up” every time.
There are 10,876 song on my iPod. So choosing a top five was never going to be easy. Scrolling through the list of artists and songs was a bit like taking a trip down memory lane and at times it felt like deciding which child I loved the most.
There was the songs that took me back to the days when Hanson and The Spice Girls ruled the radio; the Elton John and Joni Mitchell tunes that would play from the tapes Dad would insist on playing on family road trips; then the tunes like Paul Simon’s Bodyguard and Beyonce’s All The Single Ladies that are guaranteed to have my friends up and dancing every time they’re played.
In the end, here’s what I came up with:
1. The Shins – New Slang: I can’t help but smile when I hear this song. The melody’s just… so… pretty.
2. Sheryl Crow – All I Wanna Do: This is the reason I’m never allowed to play DJ on a road trip. It’s my go-to song and I’ll happily set it to repeat if nobody stops me. I love the story behind it. She says:”We were jamming in the studio, and I picked up this poem (titled Fun) in a book – the first line was ‘All I wanna do is have some fun
3.The Beatles – Here Comes The Sun: In my early twenties, I spent some time driving around WA with a few girlfriends. As cheesy as it was, this was our theme song.
4. Madonna – Like a Prayer: I defy you not to dance the next time you hear this song.
5. Coldplay – Yellow: But could it could be Chris Martin anything really. Anything that man says, sings or writes is guaranteed to be golden.
Also a special mention to Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men (PLEASE DON’T JUDGE ME!), John Mayer, Missy Higgins and Powderfinger. You all came close.

“Sugar Man by Rodriguez. Frickin brill.”
Hah, yes. That’s a bit of a ‘secret handshake’ song – wildly popular in some quarters, almost unknown otherwise.

Nice list. I had sugar man on vinyl but someone nicked it during a party. Very upset to this day.
Lulu – very unusual to meet a female fan of the pogues (in my world). I love ‘Dirty Old Town’.
loading...
Ahhh….Rodriguez!!! I’ve always been straight and very conventional but loved Rodriguez …..I either get people who have never heard of him or people who look at me differently
I don’t understand why he’s never become more well known – I saw him in Sydney a couple of years ago and he was still awesome.
loading...
‘Sugar Man’ is brilliant. His tone, and how he captures the ennui and longing of someone hanging out for a drug. Love it, too.

Okay so ask me tomorrow and it could change again…it is SO hard to pick just five. But here are five that I absolutely love and have loved for YEARS. If I ever hear any of these on the radio I turn them up and sing at the top of my lungs:

2. Edge of Seventeen – Stevie Nicks
3. Paradise City – Guns ‘n Roses
4. The Knack – My Sharona

4) Romeo’s Heart – John Farnham (bittersweet memories attached to this)

That was fun!

Music is always an interesting conversation point for me. When I worked at a community radio station I used to make a point of playing 1-2 random songs/artists every time I was on air to add a bit of diversity. I grew up loving The Beatles, Savage Garden, Miles Davis, Otis Redding and the Spice Girls, then moved onto loving hip hop, blues, folk. I went through a punk and rock phase, then onto electronic and now I like it all.
But my current top five (with genres because they’re all maybe obscure):
1. Te Extrano – Xtreme (bachata/latin)
2. A Master Of All Things – Jack Carty (folk, great aussie artist!)
3. Que Pasa – San Lazaro (salsa/latin)
4. Pangaea – Visionaries (hip hop)
5. Lucky Day – Stringmansassy (folk)

- I Can See Clearly Now, Jimmy Cliff
- I’ve Got a Plan, My Friend the Chocolate Cake
- The One that Got Away, Pink
- I’m With You, Avril Lavigne

Asking me for my five favourite songs is a bit like asking someone which of their children they love the most. This is my best answer:
Something by Led Zeppelin
Something by The Rolling Stones
Something by Cream
Something by Guns ‘n Roses
Something by Jimi Hendrix
Just as an aside, what the heck ever happened to 91.5? They have undergone so many permutations, it feels like they can’t make up their mind as to what kind of station they are / what sort of demographic they are appealing to (or maybe just don’t want to). I was STOKED when it was classic rock, it was so awesome turning on the radio and hearing the above artists playing (I remember one day when they played Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’, followed by ‘Guns ‘n Roses’ ‘Sweet Child O Mine’, followed by Aerosmith’s ‘Love in an Elevator’, I just about had an orgasm). Then they went to 80s all the time and now they’re going with a ‘smooth mix’? Had to change my radio station back to Gold 104.3 (tried Triple M, but they seemed obsessed with Matchbox 20 and football) to at least hear SOME of the above! Please go back to classic rock!
loading...
1. Blackbird – Paul McCartney (can listen to it over and over, and will never tire of it).
2. Landslide – any version of it, I’m a sucker, I sing it really badly too.

4. The First Cut is the Deepest -Cat Stevens
5. Want you back – Jackson 5. I do killer dance moves to this.
loading...
Out of the 3000 on my ipod, these will always be my favourites:

List changes, but these will do:
1. ‘See My Baby Jive’ by Wizzard. Loved it when I was little, and it has helped make me a glam rock tragic.
2. ‘Bitch’ by the Rolling Stones. Almost any song of ‘Sticky Fingers’ could apply.
3. ‘This Is Tomorrow’ by Bryan Ferry. Too cool.
4. ‘Livin’ Lovin’ Maid’ by Led Zeppelin. Awesome riffs, and shits all over the done-to-death stairway song that dare not speaks its name.
5. ‘Fox on the Run’ by The Sweet.
No Kylie. No Madge.
loading...
Right there with you on numbers 2 and 5! What’s your take on ‘Kashmir’ if you’re not digging to done-to-death one?
loading...
Yes, I do like ‘Kashmir’. Also really like ‘D’yer Maker’. Like most Led Zep stuff, but am so over The Song That Dare Not Speak Its Name. Used to have these feral bogans living over my back fence and I would sooner have watched them having sex, than listen to That Song. And guys, I LOVED the Sweet when I was a kid. My first ever crush was Andy, that Saturnine looking lead guitarist. I used to play the opening spiel to ‘Ballroom BLitz’ over and over, because I heard his voice, when Brian asked was he ‘ready’. He’d say ‘Yeah!’. Oh, swoon! (Yes, I know that’s tragic, but I was 10, so cut me some slack!)
loading...
He he, it’s like the Voldemort of the Led Zeppelin back catalogue! Yep, love ‘D’Yer Mak’er’, have spent whole days with it on repeat.
Also with you on ‘Ballroom Blitz’.
loading...
Love Fox on the Run. Takes me back to 1975 as a 13 year old listening to it on my smuggled transistor radio in Madam’s french class.
loading...
#1 Can’t Stop – RHCP
#2 Vogue – Madonna
#3 Heavy Cross – Gossip
#4 Familiar Feeling – Moloko
#5 Rhiannon – Fleetwood Mac
I’m sure I’d come up with a different list if you asked me tomorrow, but I genuinely love these songs!
