Ricky Gervais is the host of the Golden Globes for the second year in a row. Here is his opening monologue where he lays into some well-known celebrities.. Much talk about this. Some say he was too mean. Others say it’s just what everyone is thinking and HOllywood needs to stop taking itself so seriously. What do you think….?

Can’t wait until Hollywood gets their next dose of humble pie, served ever so well by Ricky.

Hilarious! Loved it.
Watched his interview on Piers Morgan (the new Larry King, channel 605 on foxtel if you have it).
His response about it was brilliant “this is what they hired me to do”.
And the comment about special effects on teh SATC2 was pretty damned SPOT ON! i loved how Mr Big (sorry forgot his name), laughed. is there anyone that dosen’t agree?!
loading...
Cringeworthingly funny, but probably not appropriate for one of their night of nights!
loading...
i’m so surprised at the media backlash and criticism he’s had over his monologue, I’ve just watched it for the first time and loved it! he’s brutally honest but his sense of humour hasn’t been lost at all! i do sense the *GASP* moments from the audience however hahaha that just adds glamour to what he was saying.

Clever, in good humour, Hollywood learn to take a joke!
Although not suprised American’s are up in arms, they have no sense of humour as it is.
British and Aus humour are very similar.
Well hey, at least it wasn’t boring! It’s the first GG that wasn’t ridiculously tedious to sit through!
GO Ricky-

Hahahaha loved it.
it wasnt that bad.
i mean given, it would have been pretty offensive to the actors in particular, but really, is any of it a lie? lol.
I think it was just bordering on offensive and light hearted fun. Coz he smiles and cuts himself off as he starts to go too far lol.
anyway who cares, they should be used to all the slander. Those who grin and bare it will only win more hearts. those who have sads about it will only draw attention to themselves and be labelled a sour-puss.
hahaha good on him. i wanted to see more!

Good! Celebrities get their arse kissed all day. We all have to put up with nasty people every day; customers, clients, patients etc so why don’t celebrities? They need a bit of a reality check.
loading...
Celebrities have to deal with the nastiest people.
I’d take dealing with rude people in real life over having horrible, cruel strangers blast my appearance, love life, career, children etc. online every single day.
loading...
pfft some celebrities ARE the nastiest people who pretend otherwise. reese witherspoon and julia roberts are some of the biggest, phoniest bitches. don’t believe those smiles aren “down home” chats on Oprah
loading...
This is vintage Ricky. I think he’s hilarious and he always pushes the envelope. But he’s not appropriate for these awards nights. I don’t understand why they asked him back. I thought this was actually quite mean and normally I love him. You can’t beat the gorgeous Hugh Jackman at the Oscars who was so talented and positive and didn’t insult anyone. Different act, sure, but I’d like to see more Hugh, less Hollywood bruised egos.

Just had a chance to watch this and I was in stitches! Loved it!
loading...
I love him even more now. Hollywood needs someone like him, they are all fake and always hear ” yes “. He was just saying it the way it is.
And it is funny how people called him ” mean ” how kindergarten !
loading...
HAHAhHAHAHAHAhahhahahahahahahaha!
loading...
It wasn’t THAT mean…
loading...
I loved it. If you Re famous, you Ned to develop a thick skin and a sense of humor, Rixky dished it out and took it too ( Tom Hanks lol) and I thougt it was brilliant!
loading...
OMG apologies for my spelling. I am tired and the I Pad went crazy on me lol
loading...
it doesn’t take a talent to be mean. I normally find him hilarious, but I can’t stand him now.
loading...
They deserved it.Everyone always sucks up to celebs and they need a bit of reality. And he is a comedian , they make fun of people.
loading...
Hilarious!! And seriously, everyone knows Ricky’s humour is kind of nasty…so why ask him to do it A SECOND TIME if you don’t like it? Get Ellen to do it instead.
loading...
I think he was hilarious! I’m sure everyone knew what they were in for. And if these actors can’t take a joke, then they are seriously in the wrong industry. I’m sure this is all a media beat up anyway, publicity stunt anyone??
loading...
I was laid up yesterday with a bad back, so got to see the whole (v. long) show. Ricky G hosted last year so they knew exactly what they were in for, and still asked him to do it again. Hilarious. That’s what he does – takes the mickey out of some of the big egos. If they didn’t want him to do it, they wouldn’t haven’t hired him. Probably won’t get the gig again, but it was worth it.
loading...
How awful to be anonymous!! That was me!!
loading...
Laughed so hard when he said
“Here is Ashton Kutchers Dad- Bruce Willis”
And Bruce’s wry smile afterwards!
loading...
I’m sure if Betty White hosted the awards, and said the same things as Ricky Gervais, everyone would have thought she was hilarious….even Philip Berk (appropriate name or what ?)
loading...
I agree with you. Some people can say something and get away with it, others can say the same thing and be censored and censured ! So, you’re at the right blog, MikeyMike.
loading...
Bit snide!
loading...
That would have been fantastic!
loading...
Definitely funny, sometimes edging towards mean but really, the crowd needs a bit of perspective. Even though the jokes were personal, they were kind of a “saying what everyone else is thinking” type thing, so surely most of the celebs are used to copping a bit of flack for those things.
Didn’t like the footage of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen having a go at him – it just made them seem like petty schoolboys. Have a laugh, or if you don’t think it’s funny, retain some class by getting on with it.
loading...
Freaking hilarious!
loading...
Gervais was a breath of fresh air ! Loved the monologue and loved the ego smashing remarks directed at the Hollywood elite.
More. (Standing ovation.) More !!!!!
loading...
hey bradley, we have agreed twice in one day!
HIGH FIVE
loading...
It’s Ricky Gervais, people, not Bob Hope! He doesn’t do charming, snappy one-liners, he does searing, incisive cut-to-the-quick observations. I loved it!
Hollywood is like one big high school – there are the cool kids (Ange ‘n Brad), the power trippers (insert name of any big studio head), the wanna-bees (Lea Michelle springs to mind), and the geeky-brainy types (Steve Buscemi). There is a pecking order – an A list, a B list and so on. RG just doesn’t buy into that, and nor should he. I have a lot of respect for actors like RG and Johnny Depp, who make Hollywood films but don’t live there, and can see the game for what it is. The joke about Charlie Sheen was funny – why should we pretend that the way he lives his life is laudable? Why should we pretend that a 24 girl marrying Hugh Hefner is doing it for love? Why did Kim Cattrall and co look like alien fem-bots on that poster?
I just wish RG had had a more appreciative audience – the laughs should have been bigger.
loading...
Hilarious…he doesn’t bite the hand that feeds him coz he is pretty self sufficient..go Ricky you rock.
loading...
Oh well, you’ve got to take the good with the bad. The celebs are more than happy when the attention they strive for is admiringly positive but when it turns, they are down in the mouth.
If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
I loved it – hilarious!
loading...
The producers knew what Ricky was like. Maybe that’s why they asked him? To give those celebrities a dressing down. Good on him. Would have loved to see a screen shot of Angelina while telling the Tourist joke.
loading...
Loved it. Americans are so up-tight.
Highlights for me were:
- thanking God for being an atheist
- implying Tom Cruise was gay
- and referring to Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad
loading...
He was so clever with the Scientology joke as he never specified anyone, even obliquely; he could have been talking about Will Smith, Tom Cruise or John Travolta.
loading...
..or Kirsty Alley ??
loading...
hmmm i just realised all those 3 scientologists (will smith very coy about it) are also rumoured to be gay!!? any connection? strange!
loading...
Think Robert Downey Jnr was right in saying it was mean spirited. Certainly was not playing to the crowd.
loading...
I thought RDJ was being sarcastic when he said that, he followed it up with an even cruder joke.
loading...
Totally, I would expect us aussies to know sarcasm when we hear it. The celebs loved it. And when poor old John Travolta pops his clogs and all the gay sauna stuff comes out, no one will be surprised, it will just be sad he had to pretend to be straight all these years. (re scientology joke)
loading...
He said backstage that he thought there was nothing wrong with being funny but he didn’t thnk you should be mean. So no, I don’t think he was being sarcastic.
loading...
Hmmm maybe I misread his tone, his joke was way creepy though.
loading...
Fantastic! I wouldn’t like to be the subject of one of his jokes though!
loading...
Cheeky bugger. It was hilarious, but only because we weren’t the target of his jokes. Saying ‘Hollywood takes itself too seriously’ doesn’t cut it because the jokes were personal, and if I was Cher or Johnny Depp or Bruce Willis, I’d be offended too. Thank goodness I’m none of them, so I can just laugh.
loading...
Hilarious! Love Ricky. He was spot on about ‘The Tourist’.
loading...
I’d like to know why ‘The Tourist’ was nominated in the “Best Comedy or Musical” category ???!!!
loading...
I know ridiculous!!
loading...
Because the Golden Globes are a joke.
loading...
Oh dear the audience really didnt know what to do with that did they! very funny but not appropriate for the Globes i would think.
loading...
Loved it! Hollywood needs a bit of grit and a reality check from time to time, just to bring them down to earth. That opening sequence would have been rehearsed and vetted by the producers so to be honest, if they didn’t want it to happen it wouldn’t have. Freaking hilarious!!!
loading...
I thought it was a crackup!
I agree with everyone else that the celebs need to have a dose of reality and need to get over themselves.
I think it is quite funny that he took the piss out of them. You can see the celebs who were shocked and didn’t get it. Gold!
loading...
have now seen it three times.
still laughing.
loading...
The people he had a go at were all celebs who , if they really wanted to, could have avoided all the scandalous stuff that Ricky made fun of i.e. if Robert Downey Jr & Charlie Sheen were not famous actors and carried on the way they did, they would probably either be dead or living in a facility of some sort.
And compared to the level of nastiness that goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood, Ricky Gervais’s performance was entirely appropriate.
It’s like the time Andrew Denton hosted the Logies, and made fun of the no-talent soap stars & sat on James Packer’s lap.
loading...
That intro isn’t mean. Thats not even harsh. These people are deluded millionaires who live in a bubble. Why cant they cop a little bit of ridicule! I am a massive fan of Depp, but The Tourist was absolute rubbish. They could have propped up the rebuild of multiple destroyed QLD towns with the budget of that film. Why not lay the boot in? Some of these super minted ‘artists’ need to climb out of their cotton wool and quit their bitching
loading...
Americans need to lighten up! Take the poles out of your arses and relax, yanks!! RG was gold.
loading...
Not especially funny but definitely entertaining – taking the piss always is!
loading...
It’s funny because it’s true
loading...
Funny funny funny. The Hugh Hefner bit was hilarious.
What were they expecting from him – he certainly wasn’t going to blow smoke up their backsides (which they get quite enough of I reckon.)
Sure, it was nothing ground breaking but they should have known that was exactly the kind of stuff he’d deliver, and I suspect the producers and directors did know. And then bingo – great ratings.
loading...
Love it! Ricky Gervaise is unapologetically honest. If they can’t handle the honesty then they should change their appalling behaviour.
loading...
The producers knew what they were getting with Gervais. I think Hollywood needs to loosen up- it’s what everyone is saying. I think the ‘normal’ people in the room would have thought it funny, and those ‘stars’ who need a good dose of reality need to hear it.
loading...
Subtle genius in so many ways.
loading...
I understand why they have gotten him to host twice now, it’s the same reason they nominated Angelina and Johnny or got Robert Pattinson up there. Ratings.
I don’t think this material is all that funny, shocking sure but give me Billy Crystal any day.
It is of course thoroughly rehearsed, Gervais doesn’t do off the cuff. They wanted people to be talking about it the next day and I think that it’s probably worked.
I agree with Robert Downey Jnr, it was mean spirited.
loading...
i agree, it was funny but cruel, i prefer Ellen, Billy Crystal, or how about Jerry Seinfeld?
loading...
Definitely agreed – Billy Crystal was always fabulous. He could make fun of people without it being mean – make the people themselves laugh, along with the rest of the room.
loading...
Steve Martin has done it better and Sacha Baron Cohen and Russell Brand have been more controversial. Gervais did pretty much the exact same routine for last years GG’s. Boring!
loading...
Mia – can you get a hold of De Niro’s speech? Apparently its a bit off, with comments about the waiters being deported? Its a shame it wasn’t all on free to air TV.
loading...
He also talked about the crap he’s done just for the money and said it kept his kids in private school.
Conversely one of the writers from Glee who won the next award gave a lovely shout out to public school teachers.

Here’s the video: http://tv.gawker.com/5735262/robert-de-niro-tries-and-fails-to-be-funny-at-the-golden-globes

OH MY GOD!! Oh bless, the celebs looked so confused – Should I laugh? If I look offended will they say I have no sense of humour? Is this guy for real???? I’ll bet they’re still trying to figure it out.
Seriously though, I’m guessing that surely NOONE knew what he was going to say….and yet surely someone MUST have!!
Me thinks he won’t get a 3rd crack at it….:P
loading...
God i love him! This isn’t his funniest work, but it’s still hilarious. I love it how he says ‘I warned them!’
Ohhhhh Ricky. You are the funniest man alive.
loading...
I so wanted to be blown away by this, but it just made me think a bit less of RG (and I LOVE his TV work). I felt involuntary pity for many of the US stars who simply wouldn’t get Gervais (even if he turned in a good routine instead of this beat-up). He obviously thinks he’s being clever and daring. I suspect he’s committing professional suicide.
