We are once again in the midst of a Reality TV tsunami.

Networks love the gear, can’t get enough.

FOXTEL aside, which seems to have more Reality TV than actual actors doing their thing, Free To Air has once again become clogged with painters, decorators, singers, dancers, gumtree leaf players, saxophonists, celebrities trying to reclaim their former glory, brides, grooms and Kerri-Anne all competing to get a slice of the public’s affection and their sweet, sweet cash.

I feel as though I am a little bit smart on this topic as my name is Em Rusciano and I am the product of a Reality TV show.

When people find that out about me they are either impressed or disgusted.

I was on Australian Idol in 2004 and came 9th.

Reality TV was an excellent career choice for me. Straight after being rejected by the nation I got a job in commercial radio. I went onto host breakfast radio for the then Austereo network for nearly 5 years, from there I got a my current jobs on The Project and The Circle. I still sing, host corporate events and take part in comedy and cabaret festivals. Reality TV changed my life.

It’s been a bloody steep learning curve, before Idol I had ZERO experience performing. I also had next to zero self awareness. The last eight years have been a mixture of work, luck, tears, moving, counselling and reflection. I am still a nobody and have a long way to go before I can get a legitimate invite to the Logies, but I get paid to do what I love so I can’t complain.

I am in the minority of former RTVCs (That’s shop talk for Reality TV Contestant) who have gone on to semi-successful careers.

It’s a wasteland out there folks, you see once the public/judges decide they no longer want you, you’re very quickly forgotten. The public are fickle and spoiled for choice, they will move on to the next thing if you’re no longer on their TV every night.

masterchef 2 380x278 One day youre a star, the next youre forgotten...

Hayden and Kate from Masterchef 2011

One day you are being watched by millions of people, have your own security guard, live in a mansion, are being interviewed by magazines and radio stations and the next you are back in your regular life which for me involved hacking away at dried Weetbix with a metal ruler on my child’s highchair. Aforementioned child no longer recognised me, just to really sweeten the situation.

You are expected to pick up the pieces as though nothing has happened. It’s a severe reality and not something the production companies prepare contestants for.

Some are crushed by this, some fight it for a while and some try to pretend like it never happened.

For the record, I did all three.

With Big Brother starting up again soon and The Voice receiving so much hype I worry again for the next crop of rejects. I know that sounds harsh but that’s essentially what we are, I wear it as a badge of honour. I think the mistake a lot of people make going into these type of situations is that they think if they get chosen as a finalist that’s their one-way ticket to becoming a *gargantuan star. (*I thesaurised the shit out of “huge” there.)

Some contestants leave the competition feeling as though the world owes them something, when the offers don’t roll in as expected it can be breathtakingly crushing.

My advice to those of you thinking about Reality TV as your next move is to see it as a platform not a magical career maker.

Go in expecting nothing.

Expect to give everything.

Don’t attach your self worth to the outcome.

For the love of everything that is good and holy NEVER, EVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER go near the Internet forums. My GAWD I cannot stress this enough. I made that mistake. My left eye still twitches as a result.

The crap news is even if you do win or somehow manage to trick people into giving you a career in the industry (as I did) you are still judged and looked down upon by those who got there by legitimate means. You know, WAAPA, NIDA, being extraordinarily pretty …

Have a crack anyway, what have you got to lose?! (Sanity, privacy, career, sense of self worth, reason for living, credibility.)

I kid!

You get use to it, once i was friends with every one, one day i was really quiet and know i have one friend, but hay, to me one friend is better then lots, because if u have lots of friends every one thinks u can trust them, but if u have one, u can trust one.

Funny because last night one of the ‘current affair’ programs had a girl that had been kicked off The Voice felt she didn’t get enough time with her mentor or enough air time or something along those lines.
Looks like she was one of those contestants you’re talking about – expecting a bit more support from the crew and a bit more ‘reality’ to how she was presented on screen.

Great post Em. Do you think, in a sense, this fame dizziness and sometimes quick fall can be applied to bloggers in the blogosphere too? There is often a rise to bloggy fame relatively quickly (though a lot of work behind the scenes) and readers get to “know” you, and then one day, blogs may not be the in thing…

I remember you from Oz Idol! I didn’t realise how successful you’d become! Must’ve missed the radio gigs – what state were they in?
Good on you for working damn hard and making a break.
RTV seems like a bitch. I’ve gotten caught up with contestants in my time, but the sheer speed at which I forget about them post-show makes me feel very fickle.
And I guess that sometimes people see being in RTV as a ‘get fame fast’ avenue, which would have to make it harder if you were serious about the industry.

My idea of watching reality TV is watching Bargain Hunt. Every other reality TV show makes me really frustrated. I don’t know what it is but I hate every single one of them.

On another note, I really don’t think you can classify Go Back To Where You Came From as ‘reality TV’; it was a documentary series. A bloody good one, too. It should be compulsory viewing for all Today Tonight viewers.

I loved this article and your honesty. What stuck out to me was your words about self awareness.

It’s amazing how few people have it in real life, let alone on reality TV.
Watching The Voice and seeing some of the contestants and how they come across in their interviews makes for great TV but it is also cringeworthy. Like the dude who kept doing pushups and called himself the Rocky Balboa of music.

Yes it made me laugh but at him, not with him.
I used to think self awareness wasn’t something people under 35 had but then after watching My Kitchen Rules, this theory was blown out the window with the self raising flour. You can be older and a massive tool also.
All grist for the mill, I suppose.

What’s evident to me is your ability to grasp the opportunities and make the most of them and be relatable, like Chrissie Swan or Julie Goodwin. You’re all grateful but not diva’s and that’s what makes you fun to watch, listen and talk to.

    Good work Em.

Em, i’m going a little off-topic here, but can I just say that your tweets during last week’s episode of The Voice made me cry with laughter, so much so that my husband got annoyed that I wasn’t watching the show properly, just constantly checking my phone for new tweets.

I think you are gem Em. Em the gem. It is a harsh world out there, and even the winners of these shows are never guaranteed a one way ticket to being gargantuan (great thesuarising!) star. Out of 7 Australian Idol winners, only 3 are still signed to Sony. And Damien Leith isn’t even fairing that brilliantly. I think you navigated the post reality tv trauma well. You’ve done things your own way and on your own terms and taken advantage of the opportunities thrown your way.

I think the key to success after reality tv is to be driven to keep working really really hard. Not for a few months, or even a few years, but for as long as you want success to last. Talent unfortunately is only part of what gets you the distance. I really loved Wes Carr when he was on Idol and gave him tremendous support after the show finished. I believe him to be an enormous untapped talent, but somewhere along the line he seemed to lose faith in himself, and has isolated his fanbase by never engaging with them or giving anything back. He parted ways with Sony last year and I have found myself questioning how hard he is prepared to work. It really disappointed me that I supported him so passionately for such a long time and observed such a steep and sudden change from interacting with fans regularly to not at all. Ever. (I took issue with it only because I had taken time out to show my support often for a long time, and he still had/has time to engage with his friends on facebook, but never to even “like” a positive comment by a fan on his wall).

Anyway the short and long of it is that you get out of something what you put in. That goes for everything including reality tv. There is nothing wrong with using reality tv as a platform, but if you aren’t prepared to work harder than you’ve worked in your life, then don’t be surprised if you end up on the reject pile with most of the others.

I am really loving The Voice, and there is a huge amount of talent on the show – all of them will have to give it all they’ve got and continue to afterward if they want a career out of it, but I wish them all the best.

That is most kind of you Lucinda. I know for a fact that Wes gigged his arse off after the show finished. He continued to do so after he and Sony parted ways, it is just so competitive out there. I could never have made a career out of singing and that is what I love to do most. Thanks again for reading my words! Em x

        Hi Em!

I do know that Wes gigged his arse off after the show for a long time – I have followed him closely. It is only in the last year that I have questioned the direction that he has/is choosing. I would hope now that he is finished getting married that he might return his focus to music. I guess on a personal level I just feel that there is a lot to be said about showing how much you value the support you have and I don’t think there is any excuse not to do so. You are proof of what engaging with people regularly can do for your profile. Looking forward to your Voice tweets tonight anyway Em :)

He has two albums currently charting, Now and Then is in the top 20 ,which he’s just released (covers and originals) plus Roy has just re-entered too, which went platinum last year. He’s off OS soon on promo tour to the UK and the US, plus his Song “Beautiful” being used in a world wide ad campaign. He’s following up with a national tour in September/October here.

Of all the things you do, I’d still prefer to hear you sing above any of them, so I hope you continue to grab those particular opportunities. I still remember the rendition of Alicia Keys If I Ain’t Got You for your dad in Idol. One of the most raw, emotive, beautiful performances ever shown on Aussie reality TV in my opinion! The popularity of that song in Oz really took off after that. Anyone here who missed it should YouTube it!

Because it triggers context recall for most people. Even for a person like me who hasn’t watched the show (OK, once) it instantly adds the back story to the picture. The others are just faces of soon-to-be-not-famous-people.

I don’t think it violates any particular sensitivity about her blindness that may be required, considering she participated in the show and gave them license to heavily leverage it in their advertising.

To be fair Em, I came across your blog etc with no awareness you were on Idol.. and I think I watched it the year you were on! I don’t know if that reinforces what you are saying or not, but I think Reality TV has to be considered a legit platform now. At least you didn’t make up a story and say ‘chick, chick boom’ for a news crew.
But seriously, without reality tv, hosting jobs would still be going to the relatives of the elite (or still are, hello Today’s weather girl for the weekend edition of the show, supposedly ‘found’ though a ‘competition) and people like you and Chrissy Swan are the voices we want to hear. People from all walks of life, not just private-school-educated-Daddy-owns-a-tv-network voices. I am not a big fan of reality tv but I do love live tweeting of those shows… I got addicted while living in the UK where it is more important to follow the live tweets than watch the show.

Interesting perspective on the phenomenon that is reality tv. I was talking about this topic with a friend the other day (whose friend just got kicked off The Voice).

The way I see reality tv for the contestants who don’t win is as an opportunity. You can make the most of it or you can wallow in rejection. And I can’t help but compare it to job interviews/trials. You go along, show how much you want it (to win, in the case of reality tv) and the rest is out of your hands. Like job interviews, some people just aren’t a good fit.

But winning doesn’t mean an easy career path, and losing doesn’t mean you’re back to square one. It’s all about what you do after being on tv that seems to matter and Em? Your experience shows that perfectly.
