Do you ever find yourself chatting to a mate on Monday morning and they describe the AMAZINGLY, AWESOME and FREE thing that they did over the weekend?
And you’re all “Ah, where was my invite? Why didn’t I know that was on? How did I miss what could potentially be the greatest weekend event of my life?”
Well. We’re here to save the day because we’re not going to let you and your friends and family give into the dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out) disease.
So here are a few things that are happening around the country this weekend for you to consider. But of course: It takes a village to build a successful weekend, so we’re asking you to comment about events going on near you, that you think Mamamia readers would love. Sharing is caring.
Sydney:
This weekend Sydneysiders should head on down to the Cronulla Spring Festival, which runs from 10am to 4pm this Saturday and Sunday. There’ll be so much stuff to do up and down Cronulla Street, and absolutely NONE of it will have ANYTHING to do with the cast of The Shire. Amazing.
There will, however, be kids’ shows from the cast of Lazytown and Ice Age 4, as well as a baby animal farm, over 100 market stalls and the Sutherland Shire Marine and Boat Show. Visit the Sutherland Shire Council website for more information.
Melbourne:
Still on Spring, it’s Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. I know what you’re thinking: ‘But I’m neither Anna Wintour nor a Kardashian, I could never attend a fashion event!’ And I’ll tell you what I’m thinking: ‘Don’t be silly, Cinderella, you can go to the ball!
The MSFW has free catwalk parades all weekend across the CBD, as well as ticketed events such as the Sky High Pamper Picnic at Southbank on Saturday and Worn Wild, the Alternative Designers’ Market, at Carlton on Sunday.’ Yes, that’s what I’m thinking. Go forth and be fabulous, Melbourne fashionistas.
Perth:
Nationwide:
The foxy ladies from Fountain Lakes are making their cinematic debut in Kath and Kimderella, which is playing in theatres across the country this weekend.
The film sees the mother and daughter duo joined by all of your different and unusual (but definitely noice) favourites on the obligatory 2012 European holiday.
Oh well, at least they’ve made a movie about it, rather than just clogging up your Facebook news feed with their holiday snaps.
Over to you. How are you planning to spend your weekend?
COMMENT NOTE: To keep the site positive, respectful and troll-free, we are now pre-moderating all comments. So if you don’t see yours pop up straight away don’t panic! We will get to it as soon as we can (we’re aiming for close to real time) and so long as it doesn’t breach our comment guidelines, it shall appear. Thanks for playing. MM Team xxxxx

I noticed us folk in Brisbane missed out, we are spoilt for choice here in sunny Brisbane at the moment with the Brisbane Festival starting this weekend and running until 29 Sept.
Head down to South Bank to enjoy the following free events:
The City of Light Show – a light, laser and special effects spectacular every night (Thurs to Sun 7pm & 8.30pm and Fri & Sat at 7pm, 8pm & 9pm)
International Lantern Garden – a beautiful display of coloured multicultural lanterns that are turned on at 6pm each night
Light Sphere – popular art installation that incorporates mirrors and reflections.
There is heaps more to do at the Brisbane Festival, lots of free and paid events but these are just the few that i’m looking forward to attending tonight with my family.
Next weekend is the Walk With Me event on Sunday, it is a short walk (1-2kms) starting and finishing in Corinda and it is to raise funds for Brisbane children with physical disabilities, the walk starts at 10am and there is a family-friendly party at the end, including Jimmy Giggle from Giggle & Hoot (if you have children you will know how enticing this will be!) More info about this can be found at http://www.walkwithme.org.au
Another event for kids is the Wild Thing exhibition at the Ipswich Art Gallery. It runs until 8 October and it is a lovely (free!) event to take the kids too, just a short drive from Brisbane the Ipswich Art Gallery always surprises with lovely interactive exhibitions for kids.
have a lovely weekend whatever you are up to!

i noticed us folks in Brisbane missed out! there is heaps on in Brisbane:
- the start of the Brisbane Festival! Head down to Southbank between now and 29 Sept to witness lots of free stuff!:
The City of Lights show – a lights, laser and special effects show on nightly (7pm & 8.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 7pm, 8pm & 9pm Fri & Sat nights)
The Light Sphere – an art installation containing mirrors which shimmers
International Lantern Garden – at 6pm each night of the festival the lanterns are turned on forming a stunning gateway to Southbank’s forecourt.
There are lots of other activities, these are just a few free ones that I’m taking the kids to tonight. The Brisbane Festival has lots of wonderful free and paid events you can check out their website here http://www.brisbanefestival.com.au
Other activities coming up are:
Walk with Me – a 1-2km walk beginning in Corinda next Sunday at 10am to raise funds for Brisbane kids with physical disabilities. The scenic walk starts and ends in Corinda and there is a family-friendly part at the end, including Jimmy Giggle from Giggle & Hoot (if you have kids both you and them will know all about this drawcard!)
Wild Thing at Ipswich Art Gallery – if you live in Brisbane and have small children then I urge you to head over to Ipswich and check out their Art Gallery. It always has wonderful free events for kids and their current exhibition Wild Thing is no exception. We have taken the kids over to this a few times and it is a fun thing to do, a separate area for babies and toddlers, craft stations for kids (and parents) to get creative and make their own wild thing masks and animals, cute dressups. I’m always impressed with this small Art Gallery.
Enjoy the rest of this wonderful weekend!

There’s a great Canberra blog called hercanberra (which I actually think I heard about through mamamia). Amanda does a really comprehensive weekly post called “This Week in the Can” and it’s always my go-to page for planning my weekends.

In Lismore (Near Byron Bay, NSW) there is a Child and Family Market running at the Lismore Worker Club between 10:30-3:30. This event is a fundraiser for the local hospitals Special Care Unit, which is the only facility with the equipment to care for premature and sick babies on the Northern Rivers. Because of the small amount of equipment they do have many babies have to be transferred to Brisbane for Lifesaving treatment instead. If your in the area come along and support the hospital as well as checking out some of the awesome child and family related businesses in the area. There is facepainting, a photo booth, free showbags for the first 50 families only, an enormous raffle and stalls featuring everything from nursery furniture, childrens books, clothing items, toys, MCN’s, and so much more.
Hope to see you there!

I have a great tip for a free thing to do in Melbourne, but its with the kids. So feel free to skip my comment if you need to!
Last weekend, we were in the city and we went around finding lots of the elephant statues of baby elephant Mali that have been painted by artists (some incredible artwork to be seen actually!)
There is a free app to download called Mali in the City and then it tells you all the locations of the elephants and you tick them off once you get to the destinations. There were heaps of families doing it last weekend when it was gorgeous weather.
Our girls thought it was the best fun ever, racing through the city, on their ‘elephant hunt’. It was a hoot.
And as an extra plus, there were absolutely buggered from all the walking around and slept like logs that night!

So that’s what it’s all about the elephants. I saw a few but didn’t know what who why….
Thanks for sharing, that’s something for my family.

Oh! This is my plan for Wednesday – my twinnies’ b’day. They love the zoo and love elephants, and I think they’ll have a ball going on an elephant hunt
We’re going on an elephant hunt.
We’re going to catch a big one…
loading...
That’s exactly what we sang while hunting!
Enjoy, they kids just loved it. I think we are going out tomorrow looking for more. The ones in in the Botanic & Fitzroy Gardens…

I just saw Kath & Kimderella (I know, weekday movie with some girlfriends. What a TREAT). It’s funny stuff – not much as a story, just a vehicle for some hilarious lines, foxy clothes and some awesome dance floor moves from Kath Day Knight. Worth the admission price to see Rob Sitch with Andre Rieu hair. Happy weekend everyone!

I live in Perth and had NO idea about the music Sunday’s in NB. This is a great idea!

Great idea!! But I agree with the commenter below… earlier in the week would be better.
My weekend involves work and study mostly…. but a long pub lunch with a close girlfriend tomorrow should give me enough of a weekend perk. I’m really looking forward to it!
loading...
This is a great idea!
My only suggestion is that you do it earlier in the week. By Friday, many people already have their weekend plans set, and it can be hard to round up friends/family.
