gaga 1 380x380 Why I walked out of the Lady Gaga concert

by MIA FREEDMAN

Let me start out with a strong statement: I love Lady Gaga. I love what she stands for. I love her music. I love what she’s done for the lesbian, gay, bi & transgendered community and I love her message about acceptance and tolerance. Love. It. All.

What I do not love was the Gaga concert I went to last night.

Something else you need to know – I didn’t pay for my ticket. I probably would have bought a ticket but I am notoriously slack about being organised enough to know when concerts go on sale and I had no idea she was even touring. So I was extremely fortunate to be invited to the concert by Coty, the lovely company who are producing Lady Gaga’s new fragrance (which is awesome).

The invitation was for a small cocktail party last night to launch the fragrance followed by a bus trip to the AllPhones arena for her final Sydney concert on Sunday night.

gaga 2 Why I walked out of the Lady Gaga concert

Mia and Paula Joye on the way to see Gaga

Excitedly, I broke with Sunday tradition of pyjamas, 60 Minutes and an early start to the work week with my laptop and instead slapped on some make-up to go get my Gaga on, along with other invited members of the media.

I’ll cut to the chase.

Grateful as I was for the opportunity to see Gaga – and for free! – I hated the concert.

Ok, why.

Well, it was just…so…..joyless. The tour was called the Born This Way Ball but in reality, it felt like being inside a game of Dungeons and Dragons.

The set was a big, medieval castle and while it did some impressively tricky things technically, for large parts of the concert, Lady Gaga was inside it, often very high up in the air and difficult to see. Making it even harder to see her were the various strange hats she wore that almost completely obscured her face.

I know, I KNOW. It’s GAGA. She’s MEANT to wear tricky hats and we were lucky she wasn’t singing inside an egg or some kind of giant papier mache scrotum.

I get that.

But from the audience, it was just very hard to connect. Her costumes were so OTT, that she was often hidden inside them – prompting me to wonder more than once if it was even her.

Then there was the banter. I do love a bit of concert banter because it can be a pervy opportunity to get some insight into the person behind the artist.

Not so much with Gaga last night.

gaga 31 380x285 Why I walked out of the Lady Gaga concert

The concert

It was all very scripted and I’m struggling to tell you what she actually said because it was mostly a sort of sci-fi mess. I do remember her stating she was an alien and she’d come to earth and that some people might betray her. Also that her vagina was weeping because it was her last show in Sydney. The weeping vagina was about as real as it got.

I don’t mind vagina talk or vagina references – the bit at the start of the concert where she went into mock labour and her dancers came out of a giant blow-up vagina with Gaga’s face on the front was the highpoint for me actually. I liked that bit because it had some humour in it.

The rest of the show just seemed so dark and gothic and angry and hard. Am I lame? Old? Is it cheesy that I just wanted a bit of joy and happy and some nice things to look at while I watched, instead of the visual equivalent of death metal?

I can tell you for sure that my reaction was not the dominant one.

The packed house went off and nobody more so than the row of 8 girls in front of us who were dressed in bras and hot-pants, with full Gaga make-up and fake nails. They spent the entire show alternating between gyrating wildly  and taking photos of themselves in sexy poses which, if I’m honest, was more fun to watch than Gaga herself.

In the end, after hearing Telephone, Born This Way, Just Dance and several other songs that I couldn’t recognise and sounded the same as each other, I decided to call it a night. Gaga hadn’t come on until 9:15 – 45 minutes late – and it was already 10:30 and I had an hour long commute home. It was Sunday. Night.

As I left, I wondered if I’d have done the same thing if I’d paid for the tickets and I decided that probably I would. I am big on walking out if I don’t enjoy something. My philosophy is always that if you’ve spent your money badly, why compound it by suffering as well?

I’m just cursing that I missed out on buying Coldplay tickets……

I recently walked out of the Five Year Engagement movie. We paid for our tickets so we stayed for over an hour. In the end the suffering was so great we cut our losses. I really should have known better.

That is because they always play the absolute best bits of the entire movie in the trailer and then have nothing good left for the actual movie! I hate this – one of my pet peeves! I try never to watch a trailer so it doesn’t spoil it.

It was atrocious! Five minutes at the beginning of happiness. Five minutes at the end of happiness. And two hours in between of banal, cringeworthy, boredom. Not a fan of Vince Vaughn to start with either…

We wanted to walk out of the Red Hot Chili Peppers when they were last here. Anthony didn’t appear to want to be there AT ALL! Hard to engage when the singer can’t possibly be more disinterested. John and Flea were into it, but we wondered why we’d bothered. It was their last show of the tour and it was obvious.
The most recent concert Ive been to (and it’s been a while between gigs), was New Kids on the Block. Backstreet boys were awful (nick carter was just creepy, and it was a good time for a loo and bar break anyway), but the New Kids were awesome. I saw them 20 years ago and didn’t enjoy it due to the screaming (we couldn’t hear the boys singing), I went again as a pilgrimage of sorts. Loved it, they looked better (I swear they’ve got a gym on the tour bus!), they sounded better (likely because we could actually here them this time), and it was just a feel good show! I still can’t comprehend Joey as a man (even when he pulled his son onto the stage), he will always be sweet little Joey to me…

I totally agree! I went to this and it was very cold chilis. I saw them in Brisbane in like 2006 and they just kept walking on and off and was just generally the worst $150 I’ve spent. Some of these big bands seem to have lost the passion I guess (except for JT, Beyonce and Coldplay who I’ve seen live and were blown away by). I see a really large variety of music and have done so for years and sometimes it’s that new band who are just so in love with the fact that people are listening to them it’s nothing but magnetic. Don’t blame you Mia.

How funny you say that Lee – the NKOTBSB concert was my first in a long time and I found Nick Carter rather odd too. If you had asked me beforehand I probably would have said he was my preferred BSB but something was really off. I actually said to my best friend (who I had dragged along) that I thought something must have gone on prior to the show. Mind you, he looked great in the photos one of the regulars posted!

Lady GaGa is what you get when you take someone from a young age, who was already a little “weird” to start with, gets an unlimited amount of positive reinforcement for that weirdness and an unlimited amount of funds to explore it. This doesn’t make what’s she’s doing fake, its just who she is from being the biggest star on the planet for 5 years now. I went on Wednesday and agree that a lot of the early performances were OTT and more focus on theatre than music, but that’s part of it too. Its a shame you didn’t stick around for the Hair performance, my wife having recently lost a close friend to suicide was moved to tears but by the end of it was nodding her head and then uplifted and dancing. This song really showcased what GaGa is all about, a very rare message of accepting people for who they are, beautiful in their own way, and done under a banner of impressive talent as an artist.

As GaGa said on the night “you don’t have to be a c$%t to be who you are”

I can’t stand the word (I’m 29), and can’t even make myself say it. Neither can any of my friends or colleagues. I’m currently in the US working with a lot of college kids (18 to my age), and I can safely say I haven’t heard the word uttered once in the last 11 months.

One thing to also remember is that Lady Gaga has a sense of humour. There was lots of humour in the show that I saw on Saturday night – including the floating G.O.A.T. “alien” etc… none of which was meant to be taken too seriously.

Probably the best show I’ve seen in recent years was Megan Washington supported by Lissie (and someone else who was very good but I can’t recall) at the Gov in Adelaide last year.

Sadly, her next show at a winery here was terrible – they bus-ed in the drinkers two hours before the show started and everyone was hideous drunk and I got covered in wine and beer and the girls near me got into a bitch fight after talking all through the set.

As far as Gaga goes, I’m confused about her and I think you’d have to be into the whole mystique to fully enjoy the show.

I also didn’t enjoy Washington and gave her quite a poor review on my blog – to which she read tweeted me. I thought she was drunk and rude to the audience.

Best concert experience I’ve had was Pink. She is the whole package – a brilliant entertainer, a great singer, very funny and awesome at what she does. She can sing while swinging off ropes upside down over the stage. No costumes or lip synching required.

Oh, and Madonna at the MCG in 1993 was pretty freaking awesome too.

I was pregnant with my 2nd child when Billy Joel was here last, touring around my due date. I worked out that if I went 10 days overdue, then had a c-section and was in hospital for 7 days, then I’d still be out of a hospital for a day before the concert. I bought the tickets. I went to the concert, dashing out the door after feeding my 8 day old baby and leaving him with my sister. Awesome concert, sore boobs by the time I got home to a sleeping baby :)

I went to Bon Jovi in 2010 (Melb) and it was one of the best concerts I’ve been to, apart from Something For Kate and Silverchair – no fanfair just authentic live music. I’d had a baby in the March and paid $400 for the Bon Jovi ticket to go by myself (thought I was nuts but justified it by telling myself I’d barely been out of the house past 6pm for 9 months and didn’t want to ask anyone else to pay that much to come with me). I was so happy when I got there that some girl in the que for food had no cash to pay and couldn’t use her card so I shouted her dinner! Best $400 I’ve spent for a night on my own, thousands of others around me and Bon Jovi!

I love Lady Gaga’s music and their positive messages but question her sexual outfits in the film clips at times? Is it just me or am I getting old? I wonder if I would still think like this if I hadn’t have had a girl? I’m sure our parents 25 yrs ago were saying the same thing about Madonna and I thought she was great in her day!

I think one of my all time fav shows was Concrete Blonde, who played at the Prince of Wales (I think ) in St Kilda sometime around 1995. I already liked CB but that show was so phenomenal and seeing Johnette up close dressed in just jeans and a white singlet, with that incredibly powerful voice…. well going on 20 years later I still can’t think of a better show.

I went Saturday night and loved it! I wasn’t a huge fan before – her songs were catchy and high on my running mix but I didn’t think she had a great voice. But I thought the performance was spectacular, her voice was actually very good and that she engaged really well with the audience (obviously not in a deeply personal way, but I thought she was pretty funny). Everyone I know who went loved it, but obviously she can’t be all things to all people …

I’ve never walked out of a concert – and tehcnically I guess I still haven’t. But I did walk away from Stage 1&2 at Soundwave this year while Marilyn Manson was on. After wanting to see him for nearly 20 years. I expected him to be left of centre, don’t get me wrong, but what the crowd got wasn’t unusual – or even confronting. It was just plain pathetic. It was a man who has taken way to many drugs, and become completely caught up in his own PR. He just didn’t bother. Since the Sidewave concerts he was in had great reviews, I can only assume he decided that it wasn’t worth remembering lyrics, singing properly or putting in any other effort since people weren’t only paying to see him and a support band or two. If it had just been the Brisbane concert where he was terrible I’d have chalked it up to a bad day or jet lag – but he was apparently just as bad at all the other Soundwave dates as well.

I left the stage he was playing at and went to see my husband’s favourite band – Machine Head, who I’ve always been a bit skeptical about, and became a fan in just two songs. They put 100% in and connect brilliantly with their audience. Could teach many “popular” artists a thing or two.

I saw Marilyn Manson at BDO in the 90s and they were actually good back then. Him (Marilyn) and Courtney Love were sniping at each other when on stage. They’d had some sort of falling out off stage, which was just funny. Hole was good too.

I also saw slipknot and while ive liked them a bit in the past i can honestly saw now that they are incredible, ive never seen such an amazing set as they put on! My fave gig though was soundgarden (ohhh chris cornell)- the bdo was staged by the river and you could just walk up and watch through the fence. I wasnt interested in the other bands and wasnt willing to hand over $170 so decided to just go and listen. Watching was a bonus :) free soundgarden! Nothing beats it ;) cornell is a god.

Let me start by saying I love Lady gaga and everything she stands for & promotes, but is she OTT for sure, I would take Adele over her any day.
In saying that though I can never afford the price of the tickets to actually see anyone, the cost is just too high for a few hours of entertainment :(

Best concert ever was Springsteen during his Born in the USA tour when he was at the top of his game. He played a series of about a dozen concerts and each varied in length, song choice, etc.

He played for two hours, had a 20 min intermission, then came back for another 90 mins. Did five encores.

But the best bit bar none was the long long stories he told to introduce each song, including, memorably, about when he was called up for the Vietnam War. He sat on the edge of the stage and talked slowly, just him in the spotlight and I’ve never heard 15000 fans (who had been on their seats dancing and singing along a few minutes before) be so quiet as he talked. He held us all in his hand. Mesmorising.

The power kept going out, which was terrible, but the crowd kept singing along so that when it came back on, they could just keep going. The solidarity felt really powerful. And when it did, he said, “wow, that was a real ball-shrinker of a moment there.” And we all laughed our arses off.

Couldn’t deal with being (along with my brother) the only people at the gig not on pingers and bouncing off the walls like fleas with ADD.

Also the lead singer had broken her ankle and as a result, was not all that dynamic.

Yes, I felt old when I pulled my earplugs out and handed them to my brother and walked out. Reality was, I had 10-15 years over the average age.

We had a similar experience with Sting last year. My husband loves him, I went along as we bought tickets for his ‘significant’ birthday. Melbourne, Sidney Myer Music Bowl. We left after 4 songs and we weren’t the only ones. We did get a refund because the promoter had oversold the venue and we were on the sides, which meant that we couldn’t hear a thing! Ironically, as we left, we realised that acoustics were much better in the ‘Tan behind the stage, but I could have listened to the iPod at home!!!

I’m a fan, I saw her a couple of years agoat the Ent Cent and I loved it, it was real, it was raw.

I went to Homebush to see her again on Thursday night @ $180 and like you Mia I was very disappointed (as were the friends that were with me). Maybe I was more disappointed because $180 is a lot of money to me.

The thing that disappointed me the most was that she seemed really disingenuous and try-hard. In my opinion she missed the mark completely.

I went on Saturday night and LOVED IT. She is a superstar!!! Yes her costumes and some of the things she said were ridiculous, but certainly not surprising! She was and is amazing.

You missed the best bit, Mia! When Gaga sang with just her piano for accompaniment, and wore her heart on her sleeve, she showed what a great artist she is becoming. Her voice, unencumbered by the ridiculously loud production (I must be getting old!) was glorious. I can see why you’ve made the points you have (we went on Saturday), but I think if you had stuck around for the bit in the middle, you would have enjoyed it more.

I think I’m the only person in the world who does not like Lady Gaga.

I don’t find her voice or music appealing.

I really don’t like her costumes etc. I find that kind of thing so fake. To me, people who present themselves that way, are hiding behind masks or something and it kind of freaks me out. If I can’t get a sense of who someone is, I just can’t get connect. I’m also freaked out by clowns so maybe its a psychological thing!

You’re not the only person who does not like Lady Gaga. I think she is fairly derivative of Cher, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler and Madonna, especially Bette Midler and Madonna. I saw Joan Rivers saying “she goes so outrageously OTT to cover up that she is not pretty” and sort of agreed.
I, like Mia, appreciate what she has done for the gay, bi, lesbian and transgender communities and agree with her message of acceptance, but she is hardly going to preach anything else, is she?

I am so with you guys! I thought I was the only one not aboard the Gaga train. I feel old, as I just don’t get it. Her music is OK at best. Her costumes are completely OTT and actually it’s all a bit boring to be honest. At least Madonna, who was famous for changing her look and breaking the mold, adopted a look and stuck with if for a few months. We couldn’t wait to see what she’d come up with next and you can look back at major fashion trends over time and trace them back to whatever Madonna was doing and wearing at the time.

Any interviews I seen of Gaga have been the same as Mia mentions above – there is no connection with me, the interviewer, anyone. The only good thing I’ve seen her do is the YouTube video doing the rounds a while ago of her pre-Gaga, performing a gig somewhere, sounding a lot like Norah Jones. That I could respect.

I went to the Saturday concert and I thought it was brilliant.

Mia, maybe next time you should get amongst the underdressed gyrating fans. We were down in the general standing area and the energy was infectious.

I agree alot of it was very scripted and produced. But I think that comes with the territory. It was a massive show for a huge audience over alot of nights, in many countries. Its going to feel manufactured. It’s not designed to be intimate.

That being said, when Gaga interacted with the audience it was funny and touching and enjoyable. She made a blonde wig adorned inflatable kangaroo sing ‘Bad Romance’ on Saturday, it was hilarious.

And I agree, I think it did feel a bit angry and dark. But to me, that lined up with her message about the struggle for acceptance and the dark places you can go when you don’t feel loved.

She could have ditched the whole G.O.A.T business and just stuck with the themes she talked about before singing Hair.

That song has been stuck in my head ever since.

Absolutely agree! For the Viva La Vida tour I saw them on the Thursday and then saw them at Sound Relief on the Saturday – the charity concert for the Melbourne bushfires. Best week ever!! When they did Lovers in Japan at their concert with the butterflies falling from the roof – it felt magical! Watching them perform Your The Voice with Farnsey at Sound Relief – not a dry eye in the house – and that included the cops on duty! Everyone in the crowd was singing along, hugging random strangers because it was just that kind of vibe – really united (I know how cheesey that sounds but I can’t describe it any other way – every time I see that moment on the DVD I cry!) Then when Chris Martin ran through the crowd – amazing – hilarious and awesome!! Can’t recommend them live enough – they know how to put on a show that is massive but still feels intimate for the audience. Got tickets to the Saturday show for this tour and I’m already excited – extremely excited!!

Oh Mia, you really should have stayed at home and given that free ticket to a real fan.

I took my 13 year old daughter to the Saturday night concert. We’d loved the last Monster Ball tour so were really looking forward to the new show. We both really enjoyed the concert. Our seats were in the upper concourse section and I feared we wouldn’t be able to see but actually we had a great view of the entire set, the runway and the screens. And there sure was lots to look at.

Gaga has incredible natural talent. Her voice is amazing and the section in the show where she sat at her “motorcycle” piano and sang unaccompanied was mesmerising. She spent time chatting to the fans and accepting their gifts, she brought a little girl up on stage to dance with her and I had a tear in my eye when she talked about youth suicide. She may of had one too many wacky costume changes but what she does have is heart, lots of heart.

I went to the same show on Sunday night and you basically sum up how I felt.
Is it worth seeing – ABSOLUTELY! But do I feel like seeing it again – NO!
I bought tickets well in advance because I missed the first two times she was in Sydney (for public concerts) – when she was supporting act for Pussycat Dolls and then 2010 Tour.
And I had good time last night with a standing floor ticket and dancing.
I also disliked the extend the concert was scripted – there was no impulsiveness at all. The set list was set in stone – even the encore was scripted and staged.
On the positive – she dances and sings and it is one very impressive set.
But after the end (and I was also annoyed to wait till 9pm at an empty stage), I asked myself if I would watch it again and the answer was “no”. Few weeks ago after Prince gig, I felt completely different and nearly went back the next week (EOFY common sense stopped me).
I may consider to go again during her next tour- but only if there are another 4-5 strong singles in the meanwhile because I also found some of the fillers in the set list repetitive and “all the same”. And yes, I am old, over 40 and the entire ideological rumble about G.O.A.T. was lost on me. The fans though make great entertainment as people watching material.
Overall, I am happy that I did see her, but probably should have done it last time she was in town.

I think that you hit a certain era of “Can’t be stuffed” and going to bed at 9.00pm every night. I know that if I am not enjoying something to the max I just get the “mehs” and want to go home and crawl into bed – much more exciting!

I think Gaga would of been great – obscuring the face would of been a bad move, as on the big screens you need to see the performers expression. Otherwise, you may as well be listening to your ipod watching a random up there.

I have been to concerts where they keep you waiting. Axl Rose kept us waiting until 11.00pm to grace us with his presence. We were thoroughly over how long it took him, even though it was awesome! We got home at 2.00pm which is just too late for people getting up the next day for work.

I think it is a bit yuck saying that her vag was weeping. I get the giant vagina, the birth – born this way. But talking about your vagina is a bit ew for me. I would of been embarassed!

      I agree with you Mia,
Walk out if you’re not enjoying a show. It all sounded a bit boring.
Why does she have to go out of her way to shock, it’s all a bit common making such crude comments about leaking vaginas. That’s hardly talented. How anyone can use the word respect and Gaga in the same breath amazes me. The fact that she loosly promotes the “F and C” word in front of such young fans certainly demonstrates how little she respects her fans. Parents are fairly irresponsible to take young kids to her concerts and may well regret holding her up as a role model.
I enjoy her music especially when she plays piano and sings but I cringe if I see her. Can however understand her disguising herself tho, she does need to. As for Nina saying her talking about suicide was beautiful, I just think that is just plain tragic and sad.
Each to his own. We’re all different and that’s ok, we just don’t have to keep promoting differences because we are all more the same than divided and we need to celebrate that more to bring about inclusivity.

Everything she stands for is brilliant & she doesn’t care about any of the negative opinions about her. People either love her & what she does or hate her. Seriously, she’s 26 & look how successful she is!! Everyone has their opinions regarding Gaga & I think she’s absolutely fantastic! Our tech peeps are working on it and because I am not a tech person I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY IT IS NOT AS SIMPLE AS CLICKING A COUPLE OF BUTTONS.
But I’m told that it’s not.
      Grrrrrrrrrr.
      Sorry.
      xxx

I have to say I have never had a problem viewing the gallery’s on my I phone or lap top so it must not affect everyone

If it helps, I’ve always been able to see the galleries on autoplay etc. But about two weeks ago it stopped and now it won’t do it at all.

        I use IExplorer on Vista.

I have to say that Sunday night shows are a real vibe killer for me. Now I try and avoid them.

I have left concerts, movies, footy games early if I’m not enjoying it. I’ve paid my money and it’s my free time. If I don’t want to stick around then I’m not going to. Sometimes it’s just easier to leave that little bit early and get out before everyone else does, especially on a weeknight.

I agree. In Adelaide we get the weekday concerts, nothing quite so deflating as heading out on a tuesday night for a big name concert with work the next day, it is just not right!

I’m 43, went to the Lady Gaga concert by myself and yes it was weird, she wore outfits I would never wear but I LOVED THE CONCERT!!! Everyone at the Brisbane concert actually got off their backsides and well, hello, DANCED. To see so many male & female Gaga “little monsters” from all ages dress up and have such a great time was fantastic to see. I don’t know but if I was given a concert ticket for nothing, I would sit back and enjoy the bizarre and different ride. If you go to a Gaga concert you have to at least expect something completely different. Keep doing what you are doing Lady Gaga, you were brilliant in my eyes :0)

And this is why I hate most commercial music of today. The lack of musical talent is “bolstered” by sex and gimmicks.
I wouldn’t pay to see Gaga nor many of the other international acts that are big at the moment. Much prefer Aussie stuff that is focused on music rather than image. I once got offered VIP tickets to Britney and politely declined.
I’ve not walked out of a concert but I once walked from a movie because it bored me.

I can’t stand Gaga. Madonna junior. Maybe.

I can’t stand her either! I really liked her early stuff then she went sorta cray cray with the animal flesh and sex themes. No need for long, self involved monologues at a concert, get back to the singing!

I heard Missy Higgins on the radio today and it was so refreshing to hear her voice and music. Don’t get me wrong, I still love lots of the other music that’s on the radio a lot, but Missy really stood out today when I heard her.

You can hate her music, but you have to admit Lady Gaga is talented.
There is no comparison between Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.

Sorry I just can’t see (hear?) it. It all sounds the same to me – and with auto tune, singers like Gaga and Britney can compare.

Listen to Lady Gaga live when it’s just her and a piano, there is no way she’s not talented in my opinion.

I’m not even a huge fan myself, own no albums and seen no shows! But Lady Gaga is incredibly talented! Just search the Mamamia site and I remember an old article with a video of gaga and a piano. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I really feel for her when people says she’s talentless auto-tuned pop thing because she’s simply not. At least research a little before judging!
