Joan Rivers, you've finally gone too far.

“Comedian” Joan Rivers has officially gone too far.

Today, 80-year-old Rivers made fun of the three women who were held captive for a decade in Ariel Castro‘s basement. She thought it was appropriate – funny, even, presumably – to crack a joke about Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, all three of whom were chained, raped, and trapped in that monster’s house for 10 years, before they were finally rescued in May 2013.

Rivers said that those three traumatised, brave young victims should stop complaining because “They got to live rent free for more than a decade.” Talking about the size of her daughter Melissa’s spare room, she said “Those women in the basement in Cleveland had more space.”

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. Now and (inset) when they went missing.

And, when she was challenged on her decision to mock the decade-long horror of three young women for a one-liner, she told gossip site TMZ: “One of them has a book deal. Neither are in a psych ward. They’re ok. I bet you within three years one of them will be on Dancing with the Stars.”

Like the very real, private horror of these three women means nothing because one day they might have the kind of dubious fame Rivers herself is so high on.

Like the shock value of her own comedy career is important enough to publicly humiliate three women who’ve been through hell.

Most comics get a couple of second chances. Joan Rivers has had hundreds.

She’s become a homophobic, racist, anti-semitic, vulgar woman and she hasn’t been genuinely funny in years. She’s existing on the adrenalin of shock factor alone, and she needs to stop.

This is a woman who thinks it’s acceptable to joke about the Holocaust, Nazi Germany, dead celebrities, suicide, miscarriage, eating disorders, addiction, and abuse. She refuses to apologise, even when she causes genuine distress to the victims of horrific crime, entire races of people, or individual people.

The last time Rivers was funny, she looked more like this.

As host of the E! channel show Fashion Police, Rivers sits on a purple throne and hurls insults for an entire hour alongside Guiliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulous – all of whom look at her like she’s a wild, offensive grandmother they don’t know how to manage. And that’s what she is to an industry she used to actually contribute to – an old woman who doesn’t think basic compassion for other humans is worth her time.

So go home, Joan Rivers.

Drop the mic, wrap one of your fur stoles over your shoulder, and leave. Disappear from public life, for good. You’re not risque, clever, edgy, or even funny. You’re simply cruel. You’ve lost your way, and ended up curled into a very nasty little corner of humanity, where other people’s suffering is sport for you.

You were once a legend, who truly changed the comedy world and made a space for women to be professionally hilarious. You don’t get to have any of that positive legacy if you spend the last years of your career as an incorrigible troll without a conscience or a moral compass. If you have any sense, or any desire to have history remember you fondly, then go home.
