Channing Tatum is the sexiest man alive?

BY JOANNA SCHROEDER

By now you’ve probably heard that Channing Tatum—aka”Magic Mike”—was named People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive“, an honour that has gone to 25 other men before, including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck.

25 of the 26 men who have won this award have one very obvious thing in common: their race. Tricia Romano of The Daily Beast points out how bizarre this trend truly is:

And during the last four years, when there has been an African-American president (who, if he were a Hollywood hunk, should surely have topped the list), it seems preposterous that no other men of colour have been picked as the winner. In 2008, square-jawed Aussie, Hugh Jackman took the top honour. In 2009, Johnny Depp and his rotting teeth were selected for a second time. Last year, nobody’s favourite, Bradley Cooper, walked away (shirtless) with the crown. And the year before, perhaps in anticipation of the release of Green Lantern (which bombed), Ryan Reynolds was bestowed this dubious honour. Call it the Sexiest Milquetoast Man Alive.

daniel day kim Theyre the sexiest men alive. And theyre all white.

Daniel Day-Kim.

Yes, Johnny Depp has won TWICE! After 26 years, this trend can no longer be considered coincidental.

Ms. Romano suggests a list of men whom People Magazine seems to have been purposefully ignoring for the last 26 years: Taye Diggs, Blair Underwood, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut and of course Idris Elba. And might I also suggest Michael Ealy, since we’re playing this (dreamy) game?

I’d also like to nominate Hawaii 5-0′s Daniel Dae Kim… unless People Magazine thinks Asian men aren’t contenders for “sexy”. But newsflash, People: If you type “Daniel Dae Kim” into Google, “Shirtless” is the third query after his name. His shirtlessness on LOST made him famous for his sexiness. Also, how about Antonio Banderas, Benicio del Toro or Naveen Andrews?

Of course, People Magazine blames Hollywood, as Romano cites:

A rep for People explained: “The cover subject is chosen solely on the following criteria: Is he hot at the moment? Is he sexy? Is his career on fire this year? Channing Tatum fits that criteria this year, which is why he was named 2012 Sexiest Man Alive.”

People explains that their Sexiest Man layout does include men of colour, but what we all know is that it’s the cover that really matters. That’s the headline. That’s the guy whose value is upped by the title of “Sexiest Man  Alive”. The rest of the guys seem to be present for tokenism and not much more. Did they ever stand a chance at the title? Probably not, just as a man of colour probably doesn’t stand a chance at being cast as The Bachelor.

Producers and publishers can blame Hollywood, and Hollywood can blame the American public—after all, they only produce what people will buy, right? And according to them, Black men don’t sell. But hold on a minute. What was the top-grossing romantic comedy of 2012? One of the top-grossing movies of the year? Hmm… Lemme think… Oh yeah, Think Like a Man! The film shocked traditional movie experts by staying in the top slot for weeks on end, starring a cast that was almost entirely comprised of Black actors and actresses.

Released in April, the film has grossed 91 million dollars (domestic) so far this year. 91 million dollars, people! That places Think Like a Man in the top 30 highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time… and it’s been in the marketplace for less than a year.

michael ealy Theyre the sexiest men alive. And theyre all white.

Think Like A Man’s Michael Ealy.

This Means War starring Hollywood darling (and box office gold) Reese Witherspoon (and two hot young white guys) grossed $54 Million. Jason Segal and Emily Blunt’s 5 Year Engagement grossed $28 Million. Wake up, People Magazine. $91 million is an impressive domestic box office for any romantic comedy and proves that the traditional idea of what sells—white men—is old news.

And even if it weren’t, even if we were still living in a time when men of colour didn’t sell magazines or movies, it is up to the media to take the first steps toward equality. Even if equality in this case is something as silly as deciding which beefcake is most beefy.

Wake up, People Magazine, and smell the wonderful diversity of flowers in the hot guy bouquet.

The man of the hour (or more accurately, the year), Channing Tatum.

And for your viewing pleasure – a gallery of males that AREN’T white that could still make it onto the cover of People.

Do you think gossip magazines are racist in who they portray as sexy? Is there a white bias in the media?

These are western magazines picking western ideals of beauty, and even when they pick non-white sexy men, they still conform to the western ideals, and are usually some combination of whatever race and caucasian. It’s such a sham!

We have so many amazing races and cultures that have so many sexy beautiful people. Why can’t we celebrate it?

I think it is a problem. It isn’t just this publication in which this happens, it is the media in general. Have a look at television, magazines, ads, movies and most people are white. I like to do a little thought exercise sometimes and assign myself a different race and see how long it takes me to find someone on tv I could identify with if I wasn’t white. Normally it takes about 10 seconds to see a white person but it can take a very loooooooooong time to see a person that isn’t caucasion. Even when a person is cast that isn’t white they generally have more anglo type features and lighter skin.

I honestly get sick of seeing slim white people everywhere. And I am white. How does it feel for other people of different ethnicities? Personally I would like to see more diversity in everything. I love to look at the human body in all it’s forms, different skin colours, different eye shapes, different builds, different hair. I also think that mayvbe if we saw more diversity in the media that maybe we would have a bit less xenophobia in the general population. People wouldn’t seem “different” or “other” when you see them on your tv or in a magazine every day.

I think sexy (or at least degrees of sexiness) is very subjective, so I kind of brush over those pages in magazines. Having said that, I’d like People to consider Javier Bardem!! Mmm he does it for me every time.

I think men of other races than mine (caucasian) are sexy… not all of them (i.e. your race doesn’t define your status in my eyes) but the two guys pictured in the article above are gorgeous!! I think they should’ve included at least one coloured personality…I feel like it is definitely missing :-)

That is a US publication and I just did some quick maths and if it was representative of the US population regarding race there would roughly have been 16 white guys, 4 African American, 3 Latino, 2 Asian and 1 Native American or Pacific Islander. That is 10 non-white / European that should have been in there IF our entertainment industry wasn’t skewed towards showing white people. And WHY is there the assumption that because I’m white that I would want to see only other white people? It is bizarre if you ask me.

So I take it you would call out an asian publication when it creates a list that is almost entirely asian. Same with an African Amercian publication. Me thinks you over think this – do we need a token from every minority in every list created.

      Token? Christ on a bike.

People is a US publication. There’s a significant amount of black actors & entertainers in the US, same as the UK. I hardly think that the inclusion of a black or Asian man would have been a token.

It’s interesting to hear this viewpoint here.

I commented on a post once about Blendr and asked why race needed to be mentioned, and lots of people responded that they were definitely attracted to people of a certain race.

Not long after, there was another article on Mamamia posing the question as to whether or not it was racist to have a preference for black (or other ethnicity) guys, and the response (it seemed to me) was that most thought it was okay to have a preference.

So…….why the objection to selling magazines based on something that so many people – including discerning women such as MM readers – find perfectly acceptable?

There’s a difference between good looking and sexy. These guys are all very good looking -but sexy? Not so much (for me anyway). Bradley Cooper is good looking; Don Hany is sexy. Channing Tatum is good looking; Dan Sultan is sexy (and can SING). Ryan Reynolds is good looking; Ryan Gosling is sexy. Hugh Jackman is good-looking; Lachy Hulme is sexy. Richard Armitage is really, really, really ridiculously good looking; Idris Elba is really, really, really ridiculously sexy. I could go on (and ON AND ON). Suffice to say, sexy is in the eye of the beholder.
And it goes waaaay beyond acting too. Barack Obama – one sexy man.

    Are those men sexy? Absolutely.

Have we been conditioned as a society to think this way? Yup.

Is this the fault of the media? Sure.

But really I don’t think it’s fair to simply cry racist. I would argue a lot of ethnic people (SOME NOT ALL) are put off even entering the entertainment industry because a lot of the time the actors are typecast- the token india, the obnoxious Latino, the nerdy Asian guy. They’re never the romantic interest in mainstream media EVER and so many of them who are interested in this industry might be disinterested from the get go, never believing they’ll be allowed to reach this level of ‘success’.

I get that Hollywood needs attractive people- it’s a mirage and an escape for the audience. But they’re dictated what we see as attractive.

For those saying it’s aimed at middle aged white women…so what?? These magazines have the power to make any man a household name, so justifying it by “their target market would know the men” is stupid and leaves very little room for a societal perception change.

I’d like to nominate the guy working at K-mart this morning who helped me when the scanner thingy wouldn’t work for me. I had one of those embarrassing moments of realising that my gaze was fixed very strongly on his gorgeous looks. His dark, smooth Indian skin, his striking eyes, chiseled features, 3 day growth, beautiful smile, sexy specs. The readership of People is mostly white middle aged women. People chooses well established household names as their winners, and none of the names mentioned above have that level of fame. Idris Elba is the only one with a big following, but that following isn’t the same group of people that buy People. Luther isn’t on their radar, but The Vow and that movie full of shirtless guys is.

Think Like A Man was a massive, massive hit, but the audience was predominantly African American. Again, I’d wager the vast majority of People’s readers have never even heard of the film. Chances are it was never even screened in their local theatre. That’s not to take away from the success of the film, but it wasn’t the kind of cross-over hit that makes it a big deal in Arizona.

The household name black actors I can think of (Will Smith, Samuel L Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Denzel, Jamie Foxx, Don Cheadle) aren’t primarily known for being sexy. Not because they’re black or in any way unattractive, but because they’re more known as action stars, comedic actors or character actors, not romantic leads. None of them really play into the whole ‘trying to appeal to the female market thing’, at least not at this point in their careers.

I can think of a ton of black actors I find sexier than Channing Tatum (though that guy did kind of win me over this year). But they’re all on cable TV shows and in indie or foreign films, doing amazing work. That isn’t where People’s interest lies. They’re appealing to the Two & A Half men market. They just want a big name, someone who’s having a huge year. These days they seem to be trying to seem a little cooler by picking younger guys who are just hitting it really big, but the criteria is the same. Tatum is a safe pick. He had 3 hits spanning 3 genre’s this year, he’s known for his looks and now he has just a teensy bit of critical acclaim backing it up.

There’s a huge white bias in the media. Look at how much whitewashing goes on – Asian narratives are adapted and only white actors are seen for casting, Katniss Everdeen was originally described as an “olive skinned girl” but they refused to see any actresses who weren’t Caucasian. Drive originally featured characters of Indian (if I recall correctly) descent, but Carey Mulligan and Ryan Gosling were cast – I believe there was some comment made by one of the writers or directors about Carey being more sympathetic. Then there’s all the “skin whitening/brightening/lightening” products that are sold internationally, but most notably in countries like India. African American women frequently talk about the prejudiced girls with darker skin face, as though that were less attractive than lighter-skinned girls.

Anyone who denies that Hollywood and the media whitewash is simply ignorant and ought to do more reading into the issue. This is scary, damaging stuff.

p.s. if anyone wants to explain Channing Tatum’s sex appeal to me, please do so! I’ve yet to understand how a glorified Mr. Potato-Head with more neck than talent is the sexiest man alive…

I am not saying I agree or disagree with your various points, but on this one:
“all the skin whitening/brightening/lightening” products that are sold internationally, but most notably in countries like India”
… how do you explain the fervent passion for tan tan and more tan in western countries like the US, UK, Europe and of course Australia? Are whites trying to be black then? What is your rationale for this?

I’m not the OP but do you never think about the socio-economic welfare of other cultures beyond your own? that’s a very Euro-centric attitude.

In Western countries a tan is seen as something that is beautiful and shows a sign of health, in developing countries (India, parts of Asia) having a darker skin colour is quite often seen as a sign of being in a lower socio-economic class, as it demonstrates you do a lot of outdoor labour.

Bradley, very rarely is it that us black people complaining about these things. It is usually some white person, and then other white people whinge, b**** and moan about how we are trying to change their way of life…blah, blah, blah. In fact I cannot wait till the annual banning of all things christmas happens and people get up in arms about muslims (cause it is always the ‘evil’ muslims) wanting to enforce sharia law and all the associated hysteria of the idiot masses.

Anyway, you need to stop having a dig at the things that actually recognise that we (black people) exist (i.e. Ebony magazine). Publications like this were created because the mainstream media does not acknowledge us unless it is something negative. Everytime there is an article like this, you always come in to make a little dig. Go away!! We get it, anything that highlights anything solely anglo-centric without recognising other races/ethnicities grates on you!! Just ignore it, like you expect us to! Please continue to not care about us quietly (except when you want to highlight something negative!!!)

Personally this website should probably stick to size diversity (for fashion) and female diversity (for business) and leave the race/ethnicity issues to those of us that have more than a token concern!
