It’s here.
After filming in Sydney, we’ve now got the first glimpse of Baz Luhrmann’s re-imagining of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, will be released in Australia in January 2013.
In typical Baz style, the trailer looks absolutely stunning. Our hearts just got caught in our mouths.
So, have a look and tell us what you think:

It screams Las Vegas. Attention to detail will be perfect however Baz is about pizazz and not the subtleties of Fitzgerald. The original with Redford and Farrow is simply a classic that should have been left to stand on its own.

Not sure about his attention to detail- there’s already an error in the trailer. In the Times Square shot, Ziegfeld Follies is incorrectly spelt “Zeigfeld Follies”. I’m sure it will be fixed by the time it is released though! I liked his spin on Shakespeare so quite looking forward to it. (do agree that redford and farrow are loverly too)

I agree, Penny Lane. Luhrmann does visually lush very well, no doubt it will be a treat, but as for the narrative and characters, I guess we’ll see. I would have liked to have seen Michelle Williams as Daisy, but I’m sure Carey Mulligan will do it well.
loading...
I would have loved to see Joseph Gordon Levitt as Carraway and Ryan Gosling as Gatsby.
Adore Cary Mulligan as Daisy, though.

In spite of two attempts, I could not get into the book, so I’m looking forward to this.
It look visually stunning and I’m kind of excited about the Ausie actors- Isla and Joel- wow.
BTW, in the trailer where there is a shot of a little boat house with a big house in the background, I think it might be of Rivendell, in Sydney…
loading...
Yes- it was shot in Sydney last year.
loading...
Yep, that’s definitely Rivendell. Can’t be anything else!
loading...
Mmmhhhh… a bit unsure.
I absolutely love the book and as often happens, have pictures in my mind of how it all looks. So while the trailer looks like a visual feast – no sarcasm, I tend to love Baz’s movies or pure entertainment factor – I am just a little worried it might not represent the book in the way I would like it to.
However I am sure I will be one of the first to go and see it when it hits
cinemas.

save us. fitzgerald is turning in his grave.
Gatsby is meant to be an achingly tragic and subtle mood/emotion piece about the hollowness at the heart of Jazz Age decadence, not an opportunity to throw every sequinned flapper dress on planet Earth at stilted melodrama through which good actors will drift, wondering what they’re doing there.
I SO hope it’s just because this trailer is awful (sorry but it is), sometimes excellent films can have shocking trailers. I hope hope hope.
Damn it, I really wanted this film to be good (even though I basically knew from the start that Baz was the last director on earth who should be at the helm) and I will hold out hope until I see it. Leo and Carey look excellent though!
loading...
I completely agree with you but think it might be fun anyway if you can somehow divorce it from the book and just view it as a film about the 20s.
loading...
Looks like typical baz… Style over substance. Looks like they have a lot of work to do in the editing room, some of the acting was awkward. But I hope it comes thru for him.
loading...
Not doing it for me so far. I love the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow version too much.
loading...
I don’t know. I didn’t love the book, but its subtlety and imagery was quite amazing.
So when I found out Baz would be directed, I basically laughed because I cannot fathom anyone LESS subtle.
It might be a good movie, but I don’t think it’ll capture that, I dunno, it’s so hard to describe – melancholy kind of detachment the book had which made it what it is.
loading...
Melancholy detachment! That sums up the tone of the book perfectly!
loading...
I agree. I’m not sure who the filmmaker was but I think the person who directed Till Human Voices Wake Us would be perfect. But not Baz Luhrmann. At least it’s not Stephan Elliott. Can you imagine?
loading...
Can’t wait to see this.the book is a true classic with emotive writing and longing for things we can never quite reach. Looks like Baz has done it proud!
loading...
To die for…… Baz’s typical over the top magnificence truly wonderful
loading...
LOVE IT!!!!
I REALLY hope that the film doesn’t disappoint!!
loading...
I read the The Great Gatsby 20 years ago and remember enjoying it but not much else. Don’t know if the movie will do an authentic-feeling job, but I’m hooked! Looks very sumptuos, who can resist?
loading...
ohhh cant wait!! baz is such a creative force, this is going to be a fresh take on a great book!!
loading...
That looks fantastic!
I know, I know, awesome, right.
My biggest claim to fame is I know the girl playing Jordan Baker. She was Alice in Wonderland when I played a tree
She’s the tall girl with the short black hair at the start of the trailer.
I am super duper excited to see how this goes.
loading...
Eeeee Elizabeth! I’m so excited!!
loading...
I was wondering who she was. She’s freaking gorgeous.

It has all of the usual “Baz trademarks” – large, busy, luxurious, “stylised acting”, engaging and beautiful. His movies are crafted by someone who’s so in love with the movies himself that he unashamedly produces films that will be devoured by kindred spirits………we need this particular genre of film in our lives……..sometimes we tire of the process that constantly demands our intense focus and dissection……..sometimes we just want to be entertained.
loading...
Nope. The opening looks like Moulin Rouge. Baz is the wrong guy to film this film.
Filmed in 3D? With Baz style quick cuts and zooms? Yeah that won’t be a headache at all.
loading...
I agree – F Scott is so subtle and nuanced, Baz is basically a gay Michael Bay… it’s going to be flashy, over-the-top, migraine fodder. And I’m going to be unpatriotic and say it should be filmed in Long Island.
loading...
anyone know the song playing in the trailer??
loading...
It’s a cover of a song from U2s album Achtung Baby – called love s blindness I think. It’s awesome isn’t it?
loading...
I walked down the aisle to that song.
(Sadly, I wasn’t marrying Bono)
loading...
Apparently it’s Jack White doing the cover of Love is Blindness, one of my all time favourite U2 songs. Love U2. Love Jack White. Strangely really hate this.
loading...
It looks very beautiful and seems to capture the excesses of the Roaring Twenties, but I miss the languid, effortless elegance of the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow movie. To me, the first movie really brought the book to life beautifully….
Still, this is only a trailer, so I’m trying to remain open minded until I can see the finished product
loading...
Loved the original movie – still do – but this looks fantastic too.
loading...
So excited ….i love baz luhrmann’s films!! i didnt even realise the great gatsby was being remade…had to study the book in high school and watched the movie with robert redford and mia farrow a hundred times so it will be very interesting!
loading...
It looks stunning.
I think it’s a bit mean we’re seeing the trailer now and the film is still more than 6 months away!
loading...
oh yes Baz…you know what I like
loading...
Looks great, hope it does really well. Can only imagine how much it cost.
loading...
Hope it sees Baz return to the brilliance of Romeo + Juliet (all-time fav movie!) and not the OTT silliness of Moulin Rouge and Australia (downright embarrasing!), trailer looks promising, fingers crossed, I SO want to love this and for it to be a success for all involved…

Love it! The fashion, the era – swoon! Just bought the whole book on a poster in anticipation! http://bit.ly/JARpbL – how cool are they!?
loading...
OMG Where did you get that?? I want I want I want!!
loading...
In my excitement I missed the link. My apologies!

Salivating!
I love anything ’20s. Adore it. So stylish.
Next year is a long time to wait for the visual glory I am expecting it to be.
In the meantime, I will keep myself happy by repeatedly watching Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries…aside from a great show, her outfits are to die for!
loading...
Fwoooooaaa…..
Jaw-dropping stuff.
Off to re-read my old copy (or download one!) in anticipation.
loading...
so excited! love the 1920s fashion!!! shame have to wait til Jan 2013! ages away! haha
loading...
Goosebumps…
loading...
Looks stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!!
loading...
Completely OTT, highly stylised, classic Baz.
Can’t wait!!!!
loading...
Sorry to be a naysayer, but based on this trailer I think the sad, tender tone of the book has been turned into one great big cheap party-cracker. Shame.
loading...
Agree- I feel like the mood is all wrong.
loading...
Yes it doesn’t look like the book I read… But maybe that’s my interpretation….
loading...
No, I definitely agree.
loading...
Good god I cannot wait to see this. Apart from Australia, I adore Baz films. I love his style. I love his control of visual, the over dramatic, dare I say melodramatic storylines. I was hypnotised by Romeo and Juliet when I was 13 years old and I still am.
loading...
Am I crazy because I can’t see any video here and nothing pops up in the tag??
loading...
I just popped in the YouTube video so you should be able to now
loading...
Ah! Thanks Rick, I can see it now
loading...
I can’t see it either – I don’t ever seem to see video’s! MM, I’m on IE 8. Wonder if it’s a browser issue?

I always get a little bit excited when a Baz movie comes out then sit through the movie confused and walk away disappointed because the hype and spectacle rarely live up to being a simply awesome movie. I’ll probably be shot for this but they’re all a little bit same same. Sometimes his films have been great but starting to get the feeling that Baz’s films are all about Baz and how big he can get his name in lights. The movie should carry itself not have Baz’s name as the first thing we see in the trailer. Make it all about the story not about the glitter and dancing and no doubt the spontaneous breaking into Glee type singing………That said, he’s an amazing guy for bringing production home to Australia and injecting our economy with some much needed creativity. If only a sometimes fan, I applaud his success and hope the movie does well.
loading...
Love it. Baz has such an amazing way with visuals and music.
loading...
It LOOKS like a Baz movie, which I have been missing – no one does that colour saturated, glitzy but not cheap, kind of film quite like he does. Can’t wait!
loading...
Oh, my. The Great Gatsby has LONG been my favourite novel. Love is Blindness was my wedding song. The two combined… goosebumps.
Still not 100% convinced by Leo as Jay Gatsby, but I’ll definitely be seeing it- if only to check that really *was* a zebra in the pool.
loading...
Carey Mulligan is perfectly cast as Daisy – exactly as I pictured her.
loading...
The moment i heard that they were making this again, I pictured Toby Maguire as Nick Carraway. Overall I think the cast were perfectly chosen
loading...
My brother was a stagehand on the movie, and in charge of props and set design. It was kewl. He got some souvenirs
I got to hear lots about Leo and all them.
loading...
Hey The Original Steph, my brother made the ladder for the pool that you see in the preview (if you blink you’ll miss it, it has a bigger part in the film i hear – haha). I was sooo excited by that. I wonder if it was your brother who organised it? He said they sent a note saying Thank you, i thought that was very kind
loading...
Ooh please please go on. What were they all like?
loading...
What was Leo like, pray tell?
