Do You Like This Story?

By EM RUSCIANO

This is it kids; our last outing for Season 1 of The Voice. Never fear, I will be turning my attention to other things that you can all get involved in, so stay tuned to this website for details.

The theme of last night’s show was THE JOURNEY. They took that word and bludgeoned us to our bloody, terrifying deaths with it. Did you even know that there were other words available to define the progress from one stage to another? I know, right?

(Cont. reading below the gallery)

Karise and Darren

.

For instance:

Adventure, campaign, expedition, jaunt, odyssey, outing, passage, peregrination, pilgrimage, promenade, quest, ramble, route, safari, sally, saunter, sojourn, transmigration, traverse, trek, trip, vagabondage (ha, ha bondage) venture and voyage…

The emotive male voice over told us that this episode was about sadness and happiness and colour co-ordination and highs and lows and most importantly… breasts. Sorry, my retinas are still dented from the impression Mahalia Barns’ bountiful norgs made through my television screen… But I digress, we will cover off Mahalia’s cleavage and her father’s catastrophic choice of boot/pant combo later.

Obviously I was in a state of suspended animation just WAITING to see what Seal would be wearing.

Would it be a suit made entirely of mermaid virgin hair with unicorn teeth rings? Dragon scale boots with a belt made of the finest Valerian steel? Or perhaps an all in one Lycra body suit painted to look EXACTLY like the red spinny chair thus allowing our great leader to fade into the leather like a fabulous chocolate chameleon?

As the host “what’s-his-face” delivered the opening monologue, I held my breath with anticipation. Would my reaction be as strong as when I saw the lady-parts-pink velvet skivvy with matching drop-crotch slacks ensemble? WOULD IT?!

Alas no, it was a disappointment of epic proportions. He was in head-to-toe black, with only a hint of dominatrix glam in his harnvest (harness/vest). From the man who bought us the “glirt” (shirt with attached gloves) this was truly a let down.

Delta on the other hand, was resplendent in a Star Wars fan’s wet dream. Her dress, according to twitter, was C3PO meets a gold Logie, meets a bottle of J’adore by Christian Dior. In other words RAD.

Joel was uncharacteristically subdued in head-to-toe black and Keith looked fine as well. Just fine. Not AMAZING, just fine. Fine.

Group number alert! The final four took to the stage singing a classic. Wait no that is what should have happened. The final four took to the stage singing a song I have never heard of, call me old-fashioned but I want to be able to sing along to a reality TV show group number finale. Again the real winner here was colour co-ordination. All of the contestants joined the final four onstage in various shades of blues and purple. The stylist clearly has a mad case of OCD and I bloody love it.

The they talked about the judges’ JOURNEY. Delta informed us of some of her nicknames for Seal: “Man-usa” because he is a man and reminded her of “Medusa” – I’m not sure how that one ties in with Seal but I suggest we don’t look too deeply into it, KAY? Delts also calls him “Lord Seal” and “Jedi”- both making slightly more sense than referring to him as the male version of the snaky haired monster of greek mythology who turned people to stone should they look directly into her eyes..

FINALLY we had some singing and first up was what would happen should the Eurovision creative team be asked to stage a pyromaniac gothic wedding, AKA Joel and Sarah de Bono singing a duet. Sarah looked pretty ace in a floor length black frock, it was cut out at the waist and fishtailed at the bottom. I did see a hint of cheek in the sheer side panels but sister has it, so she totally got away with it. Joel made a fine attempt at keeping up vocally with De Bono but the song, which was It Will Rain by Bruno Mars – was a little out of his range. The birthday cake sparkler rain was breathtaking and the fire lit around the edges to ward off evil spirits was also impressive.

(Cont. reading below the video)

Up next was an explosion of awesome in the duet to end all duets. Karise feat. Seal. He didn’t even know half of the words and it was still grouse. Large exhaust fans set the scene with the majestic choir parked behind them. They sang Many Rivers to Cross with Seal ending up on bended knee holding Karise’s hand awkwardly. Nuff said.

(Cont. reading below the video)

Delta and mini-Delta, AKA Rachael Leahcar, thought they’d have a crack at The Prayer by Andrea Bocelli. As expected dry ice was a main player here, along with sexy violinists and ethereal facial expressions. It seemed a little creepy. It had a mother/daughter vibe going on but not in a good, supportive way. More in a “grey gardens” type of way… Rachael’s voice sounded strained and sore, Delta’s soared. It was almost as thought they were singing along side of each other, not together. Delta and Rachael seem to have forged quite a strong bond, which I think is a lovely outcome for both of them.

(Cont. reading below the video)

The final judge/contestant duo gave us the musical equivalent of clean sheets, a hot shower and a kiss on the forehead. Keith and Darren sang Keith’s Without You and it was glorious and warm and comforting. There is obviously a lot of mutual respect between the two of them. It was kinda weird how they didn’t make eye contact once during the entire DUET but after the host inferred any kind of affection would indicate they were having a love affair, I guess they refrained so as not to give hope to the gay community that they were obtainable. What? Where am I? MOVING ON!

(Cont. reading below the video)

Prinnie Stevens and Mahalia Barnes took to the stage to deliver a POWER HOUSE performance of River Deep, Mountain High, which Mahalia’s father Jimmy also famously covered. Mahalia had done AWAY with the decorative moo-moo and in it’s place she totally poured herself (and her admirable frontal region) into a tightly fitting corset. It was a flesh shelf of EPIC measures; she looked like a different woman. I was picking up what she was putting down. Then JIMMY busted out on stage… It was ten different kinds of goodness, until I saw his leather gumboots with skinny leg jeans choice. That, coupled with close proximity to his daughter’s impressive cleavage, made me a little uncomfortable. Then I got over myself and loved the whole thing sick.

Finally it was time to announce the winner. Seal showed his great love for our country by painting his little fingers with our flag. I felt as though he did that just for me you know. Not you, me…

In 4th place: Sarah de Bono

In 3rd place: Rachael Leahcar

In 2nd place: Darren Percival

In 1st place and the winner of The Voice: Karise Eden

In the end it worked, the system worked. The person with the best VOICE won.

Karise Eden is truly talented, unique and I hope to God she is treated kindly. If they do it right, I truly believe she could be an international superstar of Adele-like levels. I am sure her album masterfully entitled “My JOURNEY” (I couldn’t make that shit up if I tried) will go on to sell a bazillion copies.

I have loved every second of this show and in my head Delta will go back to her stallion ranch where young men feed her grapes and brush her hair.

Keith will resume fathering his children and calling Nicole baby in their house made of warm toast.

Joel will go back to working in his hair salon, which Benji lives underneath and is allowed out into the natural light on days that start with T.

Seal. What can I say about Seal? Oh God I am actually chocking up here… Seal gave me more joy, content and fantasy worlds than I could handle. He has been a fountain of awesome, smooth and velvety goodness. Don’t EVER change Seal, not ever.

I hope you have enjoyed this JOURNEY with me. I have loved sharing it with you, I’ll be back… Just you try and stop me.

In the meantime you should all totes come and see my cabaret show, well maybe not all of you as there is only about 50 tickets left! I know, I am as shocked as you are.. GET TO IT!

www.emrusciano.com.au

Finally, The Voice worked because at no point was it ever negative. I have attempted to do the same here, I *SPORTING ANALOGY ALERT* tried to remember to play the ball and not the man.

Thanks for your patronage.

Em xx

I hope the aunties who appeared on stage to congratulate Karise have always been around for her even when she was living in a refuge. I hope they haven’t just magically appeared since she’s been on The Voice.

This girl needs good people around her.

my first thought on Joel’s and Sarah’s duet was that it looked like the ballad of Beelzebub.
anyway, I’ve found where Joel gets his fashion tips from. One thing, he forgot to use the forehead studs

Em fabulous recap – but I really missed your recap last night! And your tweets!!

Couple of things I loved – Karise winning – such an undiscovered talent and cant wait to hear more from her but hope they treat her gently as I agree with another below that she seems fragile but it just makes me love her more
I also loved her thanking her “what do you call them …. err fans?” how humble is this girl – she doesnt even realise she has fans!!!

I also really admire that the 2 Nicoles didnt make an appearance – although I would have loved to see a shot of them in the audience but full credit to them for staying out of the limelight. The way Keith thanked her at the end was just beautiful – they obviously have such a great relationship and like another reader said I like her more after hearing Keith speak about her – so bloody proud they are Aussies!!!

All in all it was a great journey (sorry Em – had to !!) and the producers did an amazing job – this show has also seen Channel 9 return to the top of the ratings and with some great shows coming up they look like staying there – I hope Em will be commentating on all of them – Olympics, Big Brother oh the possibilities are endless Em!!!

Love your recaps. I will be disappointed not to read them anymore. Almost as disappointed as I was too in seeing Seal’s outfit for the night (though the white one from the previous night did not disappoint).

I was pretty happy with the way the placings ended up. I would have picked Rachael as 3rd and Sarah as 4th. Couldn’t decide out of Karise and Darren as I prefer to listen to him sing, but she is very talented and she is so humble I thought it would be great for her to win.

I really love the way karise laughs, it’s adorable. I think the finale show was really entertaining, I actually had to stop myself from jumping up & clapping @ the end of each performance. I was watching it in bed & I would have felt like a dick if I did this.
I think Joel looked divine. I’ m thinking that a Joel/Keith sandwich would be yummy but only if they were both blind because I’m way out of their league.
Em you are hilarious, you should have your own blog.

Unfortunately, it reminded me of one of Magda Zubanski’s characters in fast forward. Forgotten the name of the character, but she played one of an awful sleazy couple and she had a weird laugh. I know karise was nervous, so it probably wasn’t her usual.

Firstly – are there any pics around of Nicole and Nicole backstage? I would love to see what they were wearing, if they were chatting, kids playing etc.

I loved the show but confess to treating it like AFL, which is to say I didn’t watch any of the series but tuned in, glued to the screen for the grand final.

Keith is just divine. My favorite tweet of the night was about Keith being a DILF (could not agree more). And second favorite tweet of the night was from Anthony Callea, wondering if they would bring John Farnham out to sing ‘You’re The Voice’. It would have been a great fit, but very glad it didn’t happen…

Despite not being a loyal watcher, I think the best voice won – hope Karise goes far (and doesn’t get caught up in the drama, obscurity or trashy magazine story world of some reality show winners.)

How cute is Karise giggling while trying to sing her new single.

I tried watching this last night, and 2Day FM ruined the result by posting it on FB as soon as it was announced. I got home at 8.45pm and had it recording, dammit!!

Rachael bombed with The Prayer, being outsung by Delta.

    Loved Sarah’s hair

I didn’t even get past Sarah’s package because my FIL was in the driveway home from the gym and my MIL refused to let us finish watching it because he would chuck a tantrum knowing we’d watched it before he got home.

(Even though he see’s all the results of these shows before us and is the king of the remote; no one can touch it when he’s home which is basically 24 bloody 7)

She grabbed the remote and said “No! He’s home! Quick, rewind it and we’ll watch it again with him!” Well, stuff him. I don’t even want to see it now. I’ll wait until it gets uploaded on YouTube.

If I was Sarah I wouldn’t have been able to sing that duet, as soon as Joel opened his mouth singing a love song to me I would have leapt on him. Delta’s voice is unbelievable and she nailed that performance. Best part of the show was the twitter comment that popped up on the screen following Mahalia’s song – along the lines of ‘I can clearly see where the mountains are’. Glad I no longer have to see Seal creeping away.. Em, can’t believe you didn’t do a recap of Sunday’s show and Seal’s white 3/4 pant suit combo!!

I thought that they way they talked about and dressed Rachael was really patronising. I’m sure there’s more to her than the ‘angel’ and ‘sweetheart’ she was characterised as. Those short dresses they put her in made her look about 12! When she auditioned she was wearing jeans which seemed to suit her a lot better.

    You crack me up Em!

Darren and Keith were the best performers last night. Just Keith on his guitar and the two of them singing. No need for flashy bits and bobs like the others. Pure talent.

I cannot understand why Jimmy Barnes was invited on. And I couldn’t stand to watch or listen to him. Big mistake from the producers.

Anyone else on Delta’s team never stood a chance. I could have bet my very last penny that she would send Rachael to the final. As for the whole ‘mini-me’ thing. Not good Delta. Not good.

I still can’t believe Diana didn’t get through to the final. Or that Mitchell was let go so early on. His battle with Fatai gave me goosebumps.

    Joel is superb.

Keith has stolen my heart. And my husband’s for that matter. Major man-crush. I had never heard him speak or looked twice at him in a photo before The Voice. I shall miss him ever so much.

Karise deserved the win out of the final four. I also hope she gets good advice and care from now on. She seems so fragile. I wish her a wonderful future.

How can you not know The Chains by Fleetwood Mac? I was stoked they sung it, was stomping my foot along the whole time. Best song choice by an Australian talent show ever.

Go Karise. Boo Delta, what was that all about anyway? Worst song choice in The Prayer. Darren & Keith did the best duet by far!

I thought it was great that each artist got to showcase an original song on Sunday night. Not many shows willing to do that. It all added to the love fest.

I feel, more than anything, I’ve taken away a bit of love for each of the judges, who I never knew a lot about before. In particular, I will miss seeing Keith & Joel every week and feeling all warm and fuzzy about it!

And how amazeballs did Delta look last night? Only problem was I thought her duet with Rachael showcased how amazing Delta’s voice is, and how lacking Rachael’s is.

I don’t watch this show – the filler makes me want to cry – but I love Em’s recaps! I’m soooo happy Darren didn’t win! Inevitably the winners of these things make terrible albums and I’m hoping for better things from him.

I reckon they’ll pump out an album of Adele copies through Karise. Boring, and a real disservice to her great voice. That single is dull as dishwater.

Didn’t watch the show live, but caught up with performances online. Really enjoyed all the duets, although couldn’t finish watching ‘The Prayer’ because I felt too sorry for Rachael. The song was way too big for her. I much preferred Joel’s rough and ready rendition of ‘It will rain’ – even though he and Sarah sounded good together.

Keith … sigh. Love his voice. He’s got a great vocabulary too! In the interview with Darren on the website, he didn’t use any of the expected cliches. Don’t think he said ‘journey’ once.

Glad Karise won … the songs where she doesn’t screech are the only ones I would buy though so probably wouldn’t listen to a whole album.

I seem to have focussed more on the coaches instead of contestants. Oops.

Laugh out loud brilliant. I will miss The Voice. I miss it already. I can’t remember EVER sitting on a couch watching a show every week with my husband and eldest child.
There was so little snark – even on social media. It really felt like being part of something special.
    LOVED IT SICK.
Thanks Em for shining your brilliant light and extraordinary wit on this Journey.
Can’t wait to do more with you.

Great summary, though The Chains by Fleetwood Mac is an absolute classic! I feel old….like the time when a 20 something guy said to me ‘who’s Boy George’?

Em it was a Fleetwood Mac song! The Chain – Classic!

I have enjoyed this show so much more than I thought I would. Em your recaps have been a highlight each week. Thanks so much for being so funny, perceptive and ace.

So glad Karise won. What a sweetheart. And what a voice. I have actually downloaded a couple of her songs because I wanted them, not to ‘vote’. She’s had a tough life so hoping things improve for her. I get goosebumps whenever that girl sings.

Thanks again Em. And thanks MM for bringing Em on board. A total winner!

I am so going to miss reading your recaps on Tuesday mornings Em. You’ve done such a brilliant job. Maybe you can recap True Blood??? Having said that, I’m now a big fan and will read and watch you in anything. Thanks Em.

Now that’s over – so glad Karise won. What an amazing talent and I totally love Darren. I will be buying his album – so hope he gets to record one too.

Plus, what was the deal with letting Prinnie and Mahalia sing a duet? Channel 9, any answers? Why couldn’t we hear Laura or Emma-Louise then? Weird moment in otherwise a good final show.

Jimmy Barnes did have a much better voice back in his Chisel days, when he could choose to scream OR sing. But alas, the ‘screeching cat’ is pretty much what you get these days. I agree, not great listening anymore… and it certainly felt to me like an intrusion into the flow of the rest of the show.

Am I the only one who thinks Jimmy Barnes has no talent? If I wanted to hear screeching cats mixed with horror movie screams I certainly didn’t expect to find that on a singing show!

I also found it strange that Mahalia and Prinnie got to sing at the finale – really unfair to the other booted contestants.

Did anyone see Emma-Louise Birdsall sing for the Whoolies ad? What a class act – she was definitely born in the wrong era.

Delta was amazing and she definitely deserves more recognition than she gets for the angelic voice (and her choice of outfits- reawr!)

I saw Emma-Louise too in the Woolies ad! She sounds and looks fantastic. Hopefully the start of a great career for her.

Agree with you too about Delta. I think she looked gorgeous last night. As my husband says, she comes across as the weakest of the judges (too ditzy) but has a beautiful voice.

That’s Jimmy Barnes’ trademark – caterwauling while looking like he’s bearing down to release a stubborn fart. Not the best example of his talent last night, though.

So glad that Karise won, she has such a unique voice. Looking forward to seeing what she comes out with!

Have to say though, found the duets a little underwhelming last night. Particularly Rachael and Delta’s rendition of The Prayer…if they were trying to recreate that goosebump WOW feeling we all felt when Anthony Callea performed it on Idol, they didn’t even get close (for me anyway). Plus Delta was so OTT, made it hard to notice Rachael.
