So Madonna’s 15-year-old daughter Lourdes was recently photographed smoking. And Madonna? She “wasn’t very happy” when she found out.

In a recent interview, she said she might have to be more strict with her kids.

“I don’t think I’m as tough as I should be. I think I need to be maybe tougher. It’s hard — every day is a negotiation. But cigarette smoking I’m not very fond of — for anyone. I don’t approve of anyone smoking cigarettes, most of all my daughter.”

However in Madonna’s latest music clip cigarettes are used as props. To that she says: “I don’t smoke. That’s just an accessory. There’s a difference. (Lourdes) smoked that cigarette before I did that video.”

Could it be a case of do as I say not as I do?

And here is the music video they’re talking about.

Madonna has smoked in numerous videos, photoshoots and interviews!! Not only Girl Gone Wild. AND she has smoked outside her work too! (In one paparazzi photo). How do you explain that away??

I must be in the minority because I think double standards matter a lot between parents and children. To blatantly expect otherwise is an abuse of (adult) power. And I don’t think parents can tell their children what to do. Sure, they try. But it doesn’t work. Lourdes is 15 already! I think Madonna may be in for a shock if she thinks she can just up-the-authority and not just create a bigger rebel.

That’s the biggest double-standard of all since Madonna’s whole career has been based in rebellion and anti-authoritarian behaviour. Try telling Lourdes the double-standard is fair because one is “not real”. I’m not saying it’s okay for Lourdes to do everything her mum did, but Madonna should be realistic about the values underlying them. And if she never meant any of it and only did it as an “act” then she’ll have to reap what she’s sown.

Ridiculous. Madonna is an adult. She can do what she likes. If she allowed her daughter to do everything she did in her videos, the poor girl would be either pregnant or in jail. A music video is not real life. It is fantasy. Acting. There is no double standard here.

let he who is without sin cast the first stone and all that. Of course there are “double standards” between adults and children. Because one is an adult and one is a child. That’s not to say I am a fervent supporter of Madonna’s parenting style – I have no idea how she parents but I suspect smoking is the thin end of the wedge when it comes to Lourdes

Damn straight. Let’s haul Madonna into the town square and stone her. I vote the one who has never done anything stupid, or had their teenage daughter do anything stupid, gets to go first.

I sometimes parent by the saying “do as I say, not as I do (or did)”.
