As Australia recovered from the wedding we were treated to more frocks at the Logies where the speeches made nearly as much impact as the fashion. But all things wedding and fashion came to a crashing halt with the news that Osama Bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan. It seems the world is still discussing every detail of the operation and they will be for quite some time. Fascinating history that we are living through.

New best best best best: BOTH my children were with me for mother's day dinner! First time my broken little family have been together for quite some time. Am just so overwhelmed and emotional and thankful. And I have photos. The gods are smiling on me.
Worst: I got an IUD on Tuesday night and it was without a doubt the most painful experience of my life. I'm 18 years old, never been pregnant or had babies (yes, I am aware that childbirth will hurt way more!) I was cool, calm and collected leading up to the procedure itself but when I was shown into the room I went into absolutely hysterics out of terror and the doctor clearly was in a rush to get home to his dinner because he showed very little mercy, he wouldn't even let me try to stop crying or calm down, he just told me to lie down and put my feet in the stirrups and began the whole process... I would not have gotten through it if I didn't have a wonderful nurse holding my hand and talking me through the whole thing. He didn't even check if I was fine afterwards he just told me to go to recovery. Jerk. Why bother being a doctor if you don't actually care about your patients?? Plus now I have no idea how long it lasts, what it looks like, how to check for it etc since I was given no time to ask questions or anything so I have to go to my GP. Grrr.
Best: The amazing support I received from my boyfriend, my mum and my friends when it happened. I only told Mum that morning and she was so kind and cool about it, I was bombarded with texts from my friends (the ones who knew I was getting it) and my boyfriend was amazing. I didn't do it for him though, it was for me.
hc, here's what I know about my IUD. I have a Mirena. It will stay in place for 5 years at which time it will need to be removed and if I want, another one put in. I need to have it checked every two years when I have my pap smear to make sure it is still sitting where it should be. I should not feel it at all. I don't even know it's there, I forget about it.
Your doctor should have been much more gentle. Did anyone advise you to take a Nurofen Plus before you had it put it? This would have reduced any swelling afterward and helped a bit with the pain. Because you haven't had any children yet, inserting the IUD would have been quite painful. My gyno would have suggested you have it put in under local or general anaesthetic. He put mine in with just Nurofen, but I have only had a baby 6 weeks before so my cervix was stretched (sorry, TMI). After mine was put in, my gyno did an internal ultrasound to make sure it was sitting in the right spot. I would see your GP and get more information and possibly a check up with him/her.

Thanks for the advice! I knew it would be painful from not ever having babies but since I can't take hormonal contraception it was my only long-term option. I took Panedeine Extra, which is pretty much the strongest one that you can get over the counter. I was really chilled from it in the waiting room but I think my terror overtook it. I did ask if any anasthetic would be available but I was told it wasn't- if I'd been given a reason I would have accepted it but just hearing 'no' makes me wonder if I could have avoided the agony. I didn't get the ultrasound or anything, I feel completely ripped off. I should also add that the clinic I got it done at also does abortions, so you'd think they'd have the most gentle, personal, compassionate doctors. Nope. He was running an hour and a half late so I get that he was in a rush, but I believe that in the medical profession when you're dealing with actual human beings, especially ones in emotional distress and pain you can't just skimp on the compassion in order to speed things up. I most definitely will not be returning.
Anyone reading this and considering getting an IUD, please don't be put off. I had a bad experience but I'd say it was mostly up to panic and not being offered pain relief. I'm sure most gynos would give their patients the choice- my advice is ask ahead if that's available before you make the appointment. It is an excellent form of contraception and definitely worth if if you need a long term option.
