What is it about Lara Bingle?
At Mamamia, we’re divided. Some of us watched Being Lara Bingle when it premiered last week on Channel 10 – while others claimed they’d rather eat a box of hair. Yet even after the hype of the premiere has passed, the second installment last night has fueled around-the-watercooler conversation once again.
In the first episode, Lara moved into a new flat with her brother and best friend/manager, got pulled over while driving with a suspended liscence and was caught in a nude photo scandal by paparazzi on Bondi beach. Last night we saw Lara have an intimate family dinner (you know, just mum and bro and film crew including sound guys, a lighting team and director), she lived to tell the tale despite a devastating make-up crisis and had her car impounded. Lara does seem to find road rules an ongoing challenge.

Lara Bingle outside the courtroom
The 24-year-old has been a polarising celebrity since she first time she appeared on Australian TV screens as the Where The Bloody Hell Are You Girl in a campaign for Australian Tourism.
Since then it’s been her relationship with footballer Brendan Fevola, her engagement to Aussie cricketer Michael Clarke and the nude photo scandal (or is it scandals?) that have made her one of the most “Googled” names in Australia (that is, according to the Chanel 10 website.)
And now, her new show is said to show the “real” person behind the headlines. In an interview on The Project last week, Lara said: “There’s two sides to every story and this is my side. And I’ve been portrayed in a certain way for a very long time and I guess it’s my chance now”. Take a look:
Before the show even started, people were weighing in with their opinions – journalists and columnists included.
Columnist Sam de Brito asked what it was about Lara Bingle that made her such a target for journalists and commenters:
Bingle did not create this game – she just won it, at least for a few years, because she received a few more of god’s gifts than most of the resentful twitterati who believe they should have a “profile” in the media because they have a broadband connection and seethe biliously in their inner-city rentals that a young blonde woman has what they don’t.
Has Bingle made some false steps, compared with another beautiful somebody such as Jennifer Hawkins? Yes, she has.
Has she got bad advice from managers and agents? Yes again.
Is she “fair game” now that she’s invited television cameras into her life for three months? I say no. At least no more than any other person who chooses to make their living from TV.
Simply put, the vast majority of the criticism directed at this woman has nothing to do with “criticism” – it’s straight up bullying, and should be recognised as such.
It seems a bizarrely purposeless show: nobody was clamouring to know what Lara Bingle’s lifestyle was like and, indeed, it’s been revealed that the luxurious house she lives in on TV isn’t actually her house, so the lifestyle we’re watching isn’t even hers.
It would appear that literally picking any random woman off the street would yield results every bit as compelling as Being Lara Bingle, and any sensible person could, I feel, have said as much before they started.Yet I shall defend Lara. Because me and Lara, we’re not so different, and there are many more like us. Those of us who want to make our way in the glorious world of show business, who hunger and lust after fame and glamour, and will leap at any opportunity to chase those dreams. And it’s all very well to hope to make your name for something high-quality and worthwhile, but the fact is, a bad TV show is still more of a TV show than no TV show, and if you get offered a TV show and knock it back, who knows when you’ll be offered another.
So Lara Bingle – did you watch the second time around?
Note: Please remember our dinner party rules and lay off the bitchy comments. Imagine Lara’s reading this post and the comments, and bear that in mind when you choose to say something. Any nasty, rude or offensive comments about Lara will be deleted. Be kind. Thanks.

I think Lara is the new Warwick Caper.
She is having fun and I hope everyone will take it for the light hearted entertainment that it is. She’s a star!!
loading...
Bingle by name. Bingle by nature. Lol.
loading...
Maybe she needs to release a porn movie ala Paris , Kim etc to really get the attention she wants.
loading...
I loved it – I love Lara!
There I said it…
Just take the show for what it is, don’t expect rocket science and everything will be fine!
loading...
totally agree with you young vintage!! love lara!
loading...
Hi! Welcome back, I think! It seems like a while since we’ve seen you on MM!
loading...
As a forty year old I was kind of judging her at first but then I remembered my own behavior at that age and now I think she seems like a great and fun young girl who is just beautiful. I would have hated for all of my stuff-ups to be in the public eye! And given her fame, she has a million more opportunities to get up to mischief!
loading...
I’m not a fan, but did decide to watch it anyway. Still not a fan. I found her insincere and unnatural especially her reaction to the nude photos. The ignorance over the driving is all a bit too Lohan in my opinion. In order to be taken more seriously I think she just needs to grow up a bit, stop sleeping with married men and realise that beauty is genetics & luck, not talent. She’s a very attractive girl, but came across as quite the dumb blonde. I’m sure she’s smarter than that – why would anyone want to portray themselves as unintelligent? Brains are hot.
p.s Camilla from Camilla & Marc – she is beautiful!!!!!
loading...
Shameless self promotion, enough said….
loading...
I just hope she puts some of her profits towards a charity, if this is the case then I am in huge favour of her and her fame!
loading...
How much of your “profits” do you give to charity? I assume you only expect her to give the same % of her income that you do, right?
loading...
hmmm…I don’t actually expect her to give the same amount as I do. I earn a low salary ($60,000) and I do give $30 per week to charity when I can – but that’s all I can afford – I don’t have a nice car, clothing, glitzy lifestyle etc… I expect her to give a higher % than what I do – and I dare say she does!
loading...
That’s why I said %, rather than “same amount”.
loading...
I think she gets a lot of clothes etc for free seeing as though she is a “celebrity” so you really have no idea how much money she has. You can’t assume.
loading...
I love Lara! You go girl
loading...
I like honest people, people who have a conscience, not fake people or people who are prepared to just leave someone lying on the road after they hit them with their car and not even bother to stop, just drives off after hitting someone- maybe someone needs to teach Lara how to grow a conscience or at least find the brakes on her car.
loading...
did lara do a hit and run?? did i miss something??
loading...
Was it just me or was Michael Clarke’s name mentioned every 5 mins?
loading...
I find it interesting that Lara binged has been deemed important enough to even have her own tv show A few years ago as a uni student my best friend was working in a chemist when Lara came in (at this point she was filming ‘dancing on ice’) and took 3 neurofen packets off the shelf and proceeded to walk out of the door. My friend rushed over and asked her when she was planning on paying for the items. She responded that she “thought they would be complimentary”. Needless to say, my friend informed her that they were NOT.
loading...
lol? Oh dear.
loading...
Reminds me of the story my friend worked in a popular bar and Jamie Packer ordered a round of drinks and walked off without paying. She chased after him, demanding he pay, and he actually said he shouldn’t have to!
With all his money… what a jerk.
loading...
Why would they be free??? because she is so amazing and famous? or has actually done something to make the world a better place by curing cancer or something similar. That girl certainly has an ego the size of a house. Didn’t watch the show, not interested in her or anything to do with her and even change the channel when the ad comes on.
loading...
I didn’t think anyone could be more boring than Kim Kardashian. Oh boy, was I wrong.
loading...
I actually don’t dislike Lara Bingle, and I was kind of excited when it was revealed that she would star in a reality show, expecting it to touch on the way she’s treated in the media and by the general public (my Facebook feed has been peppered with taunts about her and her show for weeks). I liked that there was a bit of this in the nude photo scandal portion of the program, but not enough for my taste.
http://earlybirdcatchestheworm.wordpress.com/2012/06/13/shaming-lara-bingle/
loading...
I confess I don’t like her. At all. For all her posturing about “wanting to show the real side of me blah blah blah” the only reason that ANYBODY would do a reality show is for the money. And it all seemed so staged. Picked up by the police in the first episode? Really? The nude photos were so obviously a publicity seeking stunt. The most surprising thing about the show for me was that her best friend/manager Hermione seemed so “normal”. I won’t be watching it again.
loading...
did anyone else think lara and co all seemed a bit awkward?
i cant imagine how weird it would be trying to ‘be yourself’ with a camera crew in your face but the conversations and laughs etc. all seemed so odd. i suppose it will take a few more season for lara to achieve kardash-style reality-naturalness on camera

I watched last night, and whilst it wasn’t intellectual or stimulating, it was fun for a Tuesday night. It was 30 mins of my night where I wasnt thinking about work, dinner or cleaning the house. I wasnt expecting to learn how to conduct brain surgery or be informed of the latest in world economic news, I was hoping to be entertained – which I was. Yes, I laughed at Lara’s lack of street smarts but in an endearing way. She is a gorgeous girl, and whilst she isnt the brainiest of people, she doesnt pretend to be.
Obviously everyone is entitled to an opinion however some of the comments on social networks and by ‘news’ outlets have been ridiculously harsh and bully-like – which in this day and age is supposedly not accepted. Channel 10 were not aiming to make everyone in the country watch it, it clearly has a target audience – so chill with the hate.
If you didnt like it or dont like her, just dont watch it.
loading...
“– so chill with the hate. If you didnt like it or dont like her, just dont watch it.” you said it beautifully.
loading...
So true!!
loading...
I watched the show. I ended up feeling incredibly sorry for Lara. She seems to be a very naive woman who consistently receives no advice or guidance.
I don’t think much of her so-called manager. It’s her *job* to keep track of Lara’s commitments and life. To not know whether or not Lara’s license was suspended seems like incredibly inept behaviour to me.
I just got the image of a highly isolated, lonely, yet very vivacious and likeable girl who seems to have bad people surrounding her.
loading...
so it was her manager’s responsibility to know and then prevent her from driving?
jesus, talk about an easy out for lara to never assume responsibility or accountability over anything in her entire life
loading...
But a managers job is to manager her career – that includes advising her on her actions and shaping her public image. So if she’s suspended from driving it’s pretty crucial her manager knows and advises her not to drive!
Yes, Lara a doofus for driving without a licence, but her manager’s also being crap at her job!!
loading...
Disagree. A manager’s job is to manager the client’s career. It doesn’t involve telling an adult with a brain not to drive if their licence is suspended. That’s commonsense.
loading...
So far the ‘star’ of the show is her Mother! And when do we get to see the ‘real’ Lara or is she really that Diva? Make the show about the manager she is at least smart and funny!
loading...
Well I started watching the program as an extreme sceptic and gradually it gained acceptance in my critical mind. Whilst I was angry at her non-licensed driving of a car that was clearly provided by Mercedes as a clever bit of brand integration (until Lara revealed her licence was still at the Dealership). However, it then unfolded as someone who relied on the Dad who was no longer there to give her the much needed guidance.
Worth viewing on a night with no competition.

I wouldn’t waste precious TV time (or braincells) watching Being Lara Bingle.
My DVR is full of great television content and I’ll only get to watch a fraction of it. Being Lara Bingle didn’t make the cut.
loading...
I taught Lara when she was a young student in Yr 8 / 9. Behind all the “industry” world, is still a young women who missed her dad terribly. Give the girl a break.
loading...
I agree with your statement but the world is full of people who tragically lose family and don’t conduct themselves that way.
loading...
Conduct themselves in what way? Shes a young woman living in the public eye (yes, by her choice) and makes mistakes that get played out in the media. I’ve done worse things, and fortunately both of my parents are alive!
loading...
Ah Anika, I don’t know too many people who lose family and conduct themselves any better, in fact it’s usually a lot worse. And I should know.
loading...
Well I do know people who have suffered the loss of a parent at a young age and because they have had the right people around them have managed to avoid behaving badly and use it as an excuse.
I feel sorry for Lara. I think she has the wrong people advising her – this show is not a good idea: it is an artificial world that has been created to promote her. It has failed woefully! Won’t be watching.
loading...
Yes well, everyone deals with things differently, open your mind, not everyone has the intellectual and emotional capability to fall on their feet – some people don’t cope. We’re not all the same and that’s the beauty of being human.
loading...
Ouch!

Lara is moronic and clearly misguided. After being pulled over by a cop car and ‘forgetting’ her license was suspended; to prancing around nude in her open rooftop Bondi apartment, it’s clear she is naive and there is not a lot more to her than we are to believe in the tabloids. I was excited to watch the show in the hopes that we would see an intelligent or caring side of her. But I was left cheated out of my 30 minutes and my impressions of her have turned more negative now ironically. Lara should get a clue and use this opportunity to do something great and worthwhile with her brand and profile (and spare time!) Charity work, educate and expose certain ills of the world, something constructive rather than rely on being a pretty girl for money. Yawn. The only positive from the show was that I think it showcased Sydney in a positive light. Melbournites need a nice beach!
loading...
But then if she did feature charity work and promotion on her show she’d be accused of just doing it to improve her image and credibility and it would be another criticism aimed at her. Celebrity endorsement for charities only work when the celebrity is genuinely committed or connected in some way to the cause – you can’t just expect Lara to suddenly become a charity ambassador because she’s on TV. I say – if you are interested in watching Reality TV then watch it – if you want to see something weightier then turn the channel to ABC or a documentary – it’s your choice.
loading...
Well if you watched the show, you would have noticed that she is in fact involved in charity. Her father died of Bowel cancer and she does alot of work with some kind of bowel cancer organisation, wasn’t she on the way to a shoot for the cause when she was pulled over? I think you are just being mean.
loading...
fair enough, thats not nice, the but the men are just as much to blame
loading...
woops, that was a reply to another comment!
loading...
I totally agree – in fact, the person cheating is doing far worse than the third party they’re cheating with (I think).
But because it’s a pattern it indicates it wasn’t a one time mistake that she learned from. Rather, it implies that she just doesn’t give a **** who she hurts through her actions.
loading...
I’m disappointed that people promote such a television show, Lara Bingle is famous for literally doing nothing.
Just like the Kardashians, she has achieved nothing to gain recognition for and should not have her ‘celebrity’ status.
Such TV shows are dumbing down our nation, instead of showing people that you get recognised for knowledge, a show like this teaches kids to get themselves noticed by doing the wrong thing.
loading...
Yeah, but she can’t be too silly. She gets paid for doing nothing. Nice work, if you can get it!
loading...
I refuse to watch it because I don’t want to support Australia putting such utter crap to air (rather than actually producing well written/made/acted tv shows).
I will give props to Lara for playing the game well. She could have been any random model, but she’s capitalised on everything that’s happened in her life (affairs, relationships, nudity, etc) to stay in the media’s consciousness until she actually made a name for herself. In that sense – good on her.
Do I think she’s a good person though? Given she had affairs with both Brendan Fevola while he was with Alex Fevola and Craig Wing while he was with Zoe Foster, I don’t think so. She might just be selfish and stupid rather than cruel – but either way it’s an awful thing to do.
loading...
Oh for gawd’s sake – so the MEN are not accountable?
She was the single one. The men were the tools who chose to cheat.
loading...
Is that true?! Fevola obviously but I’d never heard anything about Craig Wing…
loading...
Oh for gawd sake, calm down
See my comment above to anon.
We were talking about Lara, which is why I was commenting on her – I never said the men weren’t accountable. In my view the cheater is worse than the random they’re cheating with. But in her case it’s a pattern rather than a once off screw up, which I think reflects particuarly badly on her.
loading...
I think she is so desperate to be loved that she puts things like a person’s marital status out of her mind if it means she gets that affection…
And blame the jerk men – more than her! They made the commitment to another person, they are the ones betraying it!
loading...
I didnt watch simply because it clashed with other stuff going down in our house on a school night – wrestling and screaming at children to finish homework, finish dinner and go to bed!
I really like waht I’ve seen of Lara over the years on TV and in magazines. She’s a sweet, pretty girl who really hasnt caused any harm to anyone and I just dont understand the haters. I think she seems like she needs a good mature media savvy friend to take her under their wing and advise and protect her a bit better, but otherwise I think she seems like a lot of fun.
loading...
Hasn’t caused any harm? Alex Fevola might beg to differ.
loading...
Her excuse for that was being a Sydney girl she had no idea he was married, which I believe because being a Sydney girl myself I had no idea who he was before that scandal either.
loading...
Did a comment from here get deleted? Saying that she hooked up with nrl craig wing when he had a gf, and he’s from sydney too? Why’d it get deleted?
loading...
Yes, I think it was inappropriate.
loading...
Why? Maybe I misread it but I didn’t think it was inappropriate. What did I miss?
loading...
@Anonymous – I think it’s because of who Craig Wing’s girlfriend was.
loading...
But someone’s already mentioned it anyway! See Alice’s comment above. I also don’t see how it was inappropriate either.
My issue isn’t with that particular comment being deleted per se – I just find it frustrating/confusing how MM deletes comments willy nilly with no consistency.
loading...
Alex should place the blame squarely on the shoulders of the person who ACTUALLY made a commitment to her…
Who knows? Brendan may have said things to Lara they she would blindly fall for, like ‘I’m leaving her’ etc..
loading...
And you would love your daughters if you have any to grow up just like her! Your sons, if you have any, to date girls just like her! Lovely…..
loading...
I think Lara is eye-catchingly gorgeous. And I watched the show, it wasn’t as good as I’d hoped but I’ll keep watching it in hope that it gets better! I think there’s a more genuine approach to her show then the likes of the Kardashians, it’s got a very ‘Aussie’ slant to it which I think is cool.
Love Lara though, I’m 24 as well and heck I’ve made a lot of mistakes too. Maybe not to the extremes that she has, but I’ve definitely done some stupid things that will affect my life forever.
loading...
I didnt know where else to say this but where is the News?Daily Buzz post gone??
loading...
Rick left MM last Friday so no news for now.
Mia posted something further down asking everyone’s thoughts on what to do about daily news.
loading...
Rick left? Did I miss that annoucement?
loading...
This was the announcement
http://www.mamamia.com.au/social/working-with-women-6-things-ive-learned/
loading...
Wow that was a rather big announcement to sneak through MM
loading...
I did watch the show.
I didn’t find it to be anything amazing and I don’t think I’ll watch again but she seems to be a nice person.
She should not have been driving without a licence but I thought it was horrible that it had to happen with all those paps around! Mortifying.
Also the nude photo scandal was ridiculous. She was in her own home! Yes the curtain was open but I don’t think it should be legal to be able to sell those pictures when the papparrazi was outside looking into her home! That just seems like such an invasion of privacy to me.
I think the thing I mainly enjoyed was a chance to see her body outside of photoshopped pictures and off the red carpet. She’s stunning, clearly, but seeing her on the show gave her a more realistic edge.
loading...
You’re all encouraging mediocrity.
loading...
I must admit, I’ve never had the urge to ‘google’ Lara Bingle.
loading...
while i think she’s a total exhibitionist, i can’t help but find her adorable. i watched last night and felt like i was having a chat with my girlfriends the whole show, as a 24 yr old female myself.
loading...
“others claimed they’d rather eat a box of hair”
You must have read my mind.
loading...
Its trashy, shes not a good role model for girls.Jennifer Hawkins is stunning, classy and intelligent.Their names shouldn’t be in the same sentence. And as for Kardashian, no way.
loading...
my girlfriend has served JH many times on an airline and says she is a piece of work where as LB was very friendly and down to earth.Maybe one is better at working the media than the other
loading...
I really have no authority as I’ve never met Jennifer Hawkins but somehow that doesn’t surprise me. She just doesn’t have a nice person vibe. There is nothing special about her apart from her (I think) very ordinary good looks. And luck.
About Lara. I didn’t watch. This kind of thing makes me absolutely cringe. En masse we must be a crass bunch of bogans if tv execs thinks this is what Australia wants to watch.
loading...
JH goes to the same hairdresser as me and for some reason our haircuts tend to come around at the same time. She is the nicest, down to earth, funny and kind celebrity I have ever met, and the hairdressers I go to is always full of celebrities.
She even posses with my teenage son whenever he is there at the same time and he posts the picture on Facebook. They have a running joke that they have a date every 6 weeks. She has even talked to his friends via FaceTime when they didn’t believe him when he said she was sitting next to him.
She is fantastic in my book and the person you are describing is nothing like the Jennifer I know.
loading...
I dont get the fascination with JH. Sorry. Obviously the Miss Universe thing means I am in the minority here, but she just looks like any other pretty girl in a bikini to me.
loading...
haha, are you serious ?? Jen hawkins is not stunning or classy. lara bingle is way more beautiful than jen hawkins. jen hawkins is so over rated, its not funny. she has just been smart and mature enough to take her career that far but looks wise i think she is definitely over rated.
loading...
I have to absolutley disagree. On look’s alone JH is streets ahead of Lara Bingle. We watched about 10 minutes of the show and all my husband and I could say was how she was very average looking. I don’t think she came across as nice just incredibly privledged. Rather I think JH always comes across as very down to earth..
Difference of opinion I guess and I don’t think I will be wasting my time with it again.
loading...
I think Lara is much better looking and naturally so. “Average”???? Wow. She has beautiful blue eyes and clear gorgeous skin. Whereas if you look at early pics of JH even when she won Miss Universe she was/is quite plain. I have read JH has had a lot of tweaks to her face. Comparing her from then to now I can believe it.
Having never met the two I feel LB projects more of a down to earth, approachable vibe than JH. However, having been a Miss Universe winner I would say JH would have had good management and used that to her advantage.
loading...
I wanted so much to hate her but ended up liking the ep last night. Its not exactly riviting TV but it was a good chance to see a little bit more of her.
loading...
I love Lara. She is gorgeous. I only watched a bit of the show but she seems lovely.
loading...
Watched it, loved it. What a fantastic and empty life she has!
I don’t need to strain my brain if I’ve been at my job and doing uni work all day, give me something pretty to look at while I’m working out and we’re good.
loading...
I think i want more of her best friend/managaer Hermoine! She appears to have brains and a little more spark!
loading...
I loved it and I really like Lara Bingle. I just can’t see why people have a problem with her…imagine you were 24…would you turn down the fun opportunities she has been given. I wouldn’t. I do wonder about her future (and being sensible I hope she is saving money so we don’t see her in 30 years in a bikini shot in Woman’s Day saying “I’ve lost all my money but just lost 10 kilos”). Go Lara.
loading...
I don’t really have an opinion about her… in the nicest way possible I don’t really ‘care’ about her or find her personal life that interesting. It sounds as if she’s made some mistakes, but what 24-year old girl hasn’t? Although I do find it hard to understand those who go into relationships knowing someone is married.
But I don’t agree with the public slandering of her or any other celebrity really. Online bullying is such a growing problem with kids and we’re worrying about how to stop that, yet look at the media, that’s exactly what it does. While Lara is not an ideal role model for young girls, the public bullying of her is not sending out the right message.
loading...
….. me and my friends had a Being Lara Bingle party.
loading...
Haha love it…did you all dress up?
loading...
Totally should have. But no. There was pasta though, lots of pasta. Last night saw the beautiful marriage of two guilty pleasures- my love for Lara and incredibly creamy pasta.
loading...
I didn’t watch it and not really planning to, however if I’m sitting in front of the tv when it comes on in the next few weeks, I will no doubt check it out.
I have assumed it’s probably an attempt at Kardashian style tv (which I also confess to not having seen). Not really my type of show but I figure if it works for her and people watch it then well done. Sometimes playing the ‘ditzy blonde’ role (no offense intended BTW, as I have played it myself) is actually a pretty successful strategy to get what you want.
For Lara’s sake I just hope that the show doesn’t completely flop as the public, and media, vitriol around this could be really humiliating.
loading...
I hope Lara is our answer to the Kardashians……
I’ve got $5 on Sportsbet that her ratings top out some other shows
Go Lara!
loading...
I didn’t watch and don’t plan to. I was put off by the ads. Especially the ad of her bringing her washing over to her mum’s house for her mother to do. Her poor mum!
loading...
Her mum could say no!!!
loading...
I actually thought it started two weeks ago and that I’d been successfully ignoring it since then.
Needless to say, I didn’t watch and will not be watching it next week either. I’m baffled as to why I’m supposed to find Lara Bingle at all interesting.
loading...
Wow. Am surprised by the favorable posts or perhaps it’s a case of if you don’t have anything nice to say….
loading...
I wrote an open letter to Sam de Brito about his piece on Lara Bingle:
http://writeaboutme.com.au/2012/06/12/an-open-letter-to-sam-de-brito-in-regards-to-his-piece-on-lara-bingle/
loading...
That photo of Sam De Brito makes him look like a grinning, primary school boy – ready to go off for his first day of big school !
(I mean that in the nicest way Sam – not that you look like a child, more that your grin looks genuine like a child’s – a rarity in many adults!)
… which reminds me, when is MamaMiaTV coming back!!
loading...
Sam DeBrito is a babe (in my opinion – phwoar)
loading...
I watched the show and I’ll be watching all
of them GO Lara. Love how everyone is paying out the show yet still watched it and still made the effort to comment on the show. Most of you will be secretly we watching it next week too, it’s ok!!
loading...
My brain was in need of some downtime, and I enjoyed it. I thought Lara, her friend/manager, and her brother were all interesting characters, I will watch it again.
loading...
