We need to have a chat.
We love you dearly, but there are so. many. of. you.
We were okay when the app market consisted mostly of Angry Birds and…. well… Angry Birds.
But now that everyone’s realised the potential of a truly great app, we’re in trouble. Because there are more than 100,000 of you out there. And while some of you are fantastic – truly – others are nothing more than a picture of a really cranky cat that screeches when you tap the screen.
And that’s not exactly what we’re looking for.
So we’ve had to compile this list of our favourites – just so Mamamia readers can also navigate their way through the maze.
Let us know if we left any of you out – we didn’t mean to! (Unless, of course, you’re that screeching-cat app.)
Lots of love,
MM team.
1. Cozi Family Organizer
Struggling to keep track of work commitments and playdates and appointments and after-school activities and everything else that’s on your plate? Can’t remember if your husband promised to pick little Jeremy up from Katie’s house? Or were you supposed to do that while he was sourcing dinner? Cozi tracks all this stuff AND syncs with your loved one’s phones too, so that you can delegate duties when you need to chill out.
2. Postagram Postcards
Everybody loves a postcard, and with this app, you can send them from your phone. Good way to avoid ever having to step foot in a post office again. You can also integrate with Instagram to use your own images to create the postcards.
3. Airbnb
This is like the real estate version of Etsy. It’s an easy-to-use app that connects you with people who have spaces to rent. You can even book directly from your phone.
4. StumbleUpon
Best way to kill time EVER. And also a really good way to discover interesting things to bring up at dinner parties. Browse through interests such as Humour, Music and Photography to find stories, photos, videos and who knows what else.
5. This American Life
This American Life is a beyond-amazing podcast and, incidentally, one of the most popular ones on the planet. The app is less than $3 and you get access to their entire archive going back to 1995. Run.
6. Solar
This is an extremely pretty app for looking at the weather forecast. For those who are obsessed with what’s happening in the great outdoors.
7. X-TRAIL Spotto
Got a long car trip with the kids coming up? Download Nissan’s X-TRAIL Spotto app. It gets players setting out on a treasure hunt to capture images and earn badges and even real-life prizes. Much more exciting than endless rounds of “I Spy”.
8. Checkmark
So you’re walking past the chemist but you completely forget to pick up the thing you’ve been meaning to get for at least two weeks. Never fear! Checkmark is a location-based reminders app that sends you a notification based on where you are, so that you never forget an errand again. Handy.
9. Card Munch
Business cards really have no place in this modern day and age. If you take a picture of a business card, Card Munch strips all the information off it and stores it as a new contact in your phone. SO genius.
10. Foodspotting
So you loved the spag bol you had at that random Italian place in the city last night? Rate the dish on Foodspotting so that other people can find it too.
“Leading app for finding and rating dishes, not just restaurants.”
Are there any apps you’re absolutely loving at the moment?

Apps – I’m loving clevercardsmaths app game which covers multiplication, addition, subtraction & division with gold coin rewards to buy virtual gifts and messaging. Through the holidays I have been worried about how much time my three sons have been on their ipods/ipads so I joined in and downloaded this game to ‘challenge’ them to see who can get the most coins and best gifts! My 8 year old is super fast so I’m sending him a doughnut whilst he has sent me a diamond ring! The best part as a parent is there are no in app add or in app purchases which are a real pain with kids as there are no hidden charges and it’s at a great price – take a look and see what you think.

I was drowning in art from childcare – no seriously drowning ! so I made an app its not on your list but for parents it should be ! Kids Art Keeper its on the App store and Google play 99c and you can photo the “artwork” and put it in a separate folder for each child, add the date and comments and then if you like torture your friends by posting on Facebook or Twitter or just email to Grandparents v2 will allow you to print a photobook.
No more guilt when you bin a masterpiece and maybe a slightly tidier house ?

Unfortunately Pistagram, which looks like an app I would get a lot of use from, is not available in the Australian IPhone App Store.

These apps are totally freaking me out! A travel app that can give you your own itinerary from your emails?!! Checkmark – def need this! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked past Priceline thinking I need something in there what is it again?…..
I agree with another poster though – smart phones are great but ultimately leads to less and less human interaction. A good thing?

I love Shazam. Im often hearing a song and thinking ‘I LOVE this song!’ but having no idea what it is.
As long as theres not too much background noise (its useless in cafes) Shazam can tell you the song, artist etc in a flash. Saves being frustrated all day trying to remember or work out what the song is.

I love Book Catalogue on Android. I now have a record of all of the books I own, and I love being able to use the barcode scanner to load all of my books. it backs up the list to the computer. I can also use the ap to keep a record of who I have loaned books to, so hopefully my books won’t go missing any more!

Whatsapp is great – allows you to text free, including internationally and attach images etc (you do need a wireless internet or 3g connection). it goes through your phone contacts and picks up anyone that also uses whatsapp. My telstra cap doesn’t include international texts and therefore I get nailed every time my bill comes through but not anymore.

Love whatsapp!! It has saved me a fortune and I used it constantly when I was in the US in August.
loading...
Yes Whatsapp is great and so is Viber. Works much the same and you can make international calls off it, free with internet connection

Could someone recommend a good app for helping weight loss? Something that you can enter your food into and it counts calories maybe?
loading...
My Fitness Pal is awesome for that, I use it daily. I think you can even scan the barcodes of food packets with the camera to get calories
loading...
My fitness pal….you can even scan the barcode on your food.
loading...
Myfitnesspal. It’s free, easy to use, accurate and motivating!

blossom I use MyPlate by Livestrong.com – it tracks food, calories, exercise, water intake, snacks, has a diary, tracks weight … it’s pretty good and you can also enter ‘custom’ foods or meals for anything you can’t find already listed in there.

Check out my fitness pal.

Along the same lines – FoodSwitch is a great app that lets you scan a food item and lets you know if there is anything with less fat/ sugar in the same category

Urbanspoon.
Find restaurants and cafes. You can filter according to what is closest to you, the type of food, popularity, the time of day and also your budget. All with ratings by fellow users, food bloggers and Proper Food Critics alike. We use it regularly in our home town, but it becomes invaluable when we’re visiting somewhere new.

Our household is LOVING the Macleans kids brushing app. We no longer have to battle with the kids to brush their teeth!!

Best app ever is the one that locates the nearest public toilet to your current location. A life saver for travellers with small children.

How great! What is it called?
loading...
There are heaps of them – but we use Show the Loo for Australian ones, which has worked well.

What an awesome idea – never thought of having that sort of app. Thank you so much for recommending it Lizi.

Might be TMI but that app is a lifesaver for those of us with bowel diseases too! I’m a human version of the app for around my local area, but when I’m somehwere new… HALP!

Imma let you finish but EPICURIOUS is one of the best apps of all time. Of all time!
Not sure what to have for dinner? Just enter in what ingredients you have and this wonderful app tells you what you can make. Amazing recipes based on what you have!

Love the Kanye reference!
I use it often but not everyone catches on quick enough to appreciate the effect ….

We love the Raising Children’s Network app called “baby karaoke”, its a life saver on the plane, in the car or when we have a tired baby.
And for the crafty among you Fabric Stash is also great.

What a cool app! Thanks for the suggestion, my two year old is singing along now

Help…. Just tried to find ‘Postagram postcard’ on the App Store but no success – any suggestions? Or is it only android?
loading...
Its not available in the Australian app store.
I tried to leave this comment before but it appears MM have decided to block every comment I make!

There’s a similar app on the Australian store called “Postcard on the Run”

I love apps as much as any iPad/iPod/iPhone user but what’s got me annoyed is my out of date iPod Touch. I have the second generation, bought in August of 2010. The most up to date iOS it can have is 4.2, which restricts me to most of the apps available to me now. I don’t have $330 to spare for a 5th Gen iPod Touch!
How quickly these things go out of date. :/

That’s crap

I love This American Life podcast

If you love coffee, you have to get beanhunter. super useful app that finds cafes with great coffee. Beautifully designed too. It’s led me to many great finds!
loading...
I use Beanhunter ALL the time! Their website is great too: http://www.beanhunter.com/
Such a fantastic idea for us Melbourne coffee-addicts!
loading...
Melbourne Coffee Review is a good one too (if you’re in Melbs)

Card munch is my favourite app! I recommend it all the time to work colleagues and use it almost daily.
loading...
I too wouldn’t use any of these apps as a stay at home Mum with a 2 year old girl and I have an android phone but I’m sure lots of people would love these.

One of my favourite apps is TripIt. All you need to do is forward your confirming emails for hotel bookings, flights, car rentals etc to it and it magically extracts all the relevant info and creates a detailed itinerary for you. So very useful when you’re in transit and can’t quite remember whether that connecting flight is at 3.30 or 4.30. Love it.
loading...
I use kayak now. I liked the layout of tripit but ran both apps on a recent holiday. When our flight was delayed, kayak emailed with flight details…delayed by 1 hour etc. it seems to give me more (for free).

Someone should mention this to Jamila!!!

I love love love apps. For a while now I have been loving the Coles app…so handy for me as I only shop at Coles. I used to spend days adding things to “the list” and then leave it at home!!! Now its all in my phone…so handy as like alot of people I never leave the house without my phone.

Little Things is brilliant on an iPhone iPod or iPad, I love it more than my kids do. It is a search game, each picture has hundres of little pictures in it and a list at the side tells you what you need to find and tap on.
BrainPOP is interesting and educational, there are frequently new videos to watch.
loading...
Great list, thanks! All but a few of those are available on Google Play. Probably a pretty good ratio to iOS/Android users.
loading...
I can live with out all these apps.
I don’t have a mobile phone at all. Thank god.
loading...
sorry if I’m old fashioned, but I like real postcards and boring games of real ispy. Sad that technology can replace just about all interpersonal connections nowadays
loading...
On a 14 hour drive with 4 kids I would be looking for a bit of balance. Yes plenty of chatting, and interacting with each other, and also oh God yes some half stimulating games or such to keep them occupied for a time.
loading...
Is it possible to have the app recommendations available to both iPhone and Android users?!
Some of these apps are iPhone only and these days not everyone uses an iPhone.
